The town lost some influence after the French revolution, period during which the Bishophood was abolished, the bailif was removed, primary and secondary schools were closed. Appointed him Apostolic Vicar of Phát Diệm and Titular Bishop of Numida on 24 January 1959. The Apostolic Vicar of Hanoi, Joseph Marie Trịnh Như Khuê, consecrated him to the bishophood on 26 April of that year. In electoral terms, he chose In caritate non ficta. The Pope raised the apostolic vicariate to the bishopric on 24 November 1960 and thus he was appointed bishop of Phát Diệm.

In 1908 Ramban Geevarghese Karuchira resided in the Church complex and developed it into a dayara. He was later elevated to bishophood and assumed the name Geevarghese Mar Phelexinose. From 1913 to 1925 dayara became the Headquarters of the Diocese of Kottayam. In the year 1925 he was elevated to Catholicos of the East, assuming the title Baselios Geevarghese I, and the dayara became the Headquarters of the Catholicos of the East.

He earned his Master of Economics from Maharajas College, affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University. Chitteth joined United Theological College, Bangalore for higher studies in Theology and earned his Bachelor of Divinity in 1998 from the Senate of Serampore College (University). He was awarded his Master of Theology in Systematic Theology in 2001 by the Senate. In 2004 Chitteth went to the United States for his higher studies in Theology and was called to Bishophood during his studies.

Last years before his nomination to the bishophood he was a Canon of the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and Dean of Herceg Novi. On March 11, 1996, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the Diocesan Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kotor. On April 27, 1996, he was consecrated as bishop by his predecessor, Bishop emeritus Ivo Gugić and other prelates of the Roman Catholic Church in Cathedral of Saint Tryphon in Kotor. Retired on September 29, 2019 after reached age limit of 75 years old.

At Karingachira St. George Jacobite Syrian Cathedral, Baselios Thomas I ordained him as Rabban (monk) with the name Nahum on 2 July 2006, along with four others. On 3 July 2006, Nahum Rabban along with four other monks, was raised to the highest order of bishophood—metropolitan—by Baselios Thomas I, at St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, North Paravoor, where Patriarch of Antioch, Moran Mor Ignatius Peter IV consecrated St. Gregorios Geevarghese, Chathuruthil along with others in 1876. Rabban Nahum was ordained with the name MOR APHREM MATHEWS. He is the only Metropolitan in the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church with the name Aphrem.

Soegijapranata's grave in Giri Tunggal Soegijapranata is remembered with pride by Javanese Catholics, who praise his strength of will during the occupation and national revolution. The historian Anhar Gonggong described Soegijapranata as not just a bishop, but an Indonesian leader who "was tested as a good leader and deserved the hero status". The Indonesian historian Anton Haryono described Soegijapranata's ascension to bishophood as "monumental", considering that Soegijapranata had only been ordained nine years previously and was chosen ahead of non-Indonesian priests several years his senior. Henricia Moeryantini, a nun in the Order of Carolus Borromeus, writes that the Catholic Church became nationally influential under Soegijapranata, and that the archbishop cared too much for the people to take an outsider's approach.
