Mary finds her but on their way home they are pulled over by a police officer and Mary is fined for driving on a suspended license. At the police station in an attempt to comfort Robyn, Mary admits that she is an alcoholic for the first time. While cleaning up their home Mary discovers old letters in which she discovers she is not her father's biological daughter. She had also previously held a grudge against her father for having an affair and not contacting her after her mother relocated her to Timmins causing their estrangement, however she finds birthday cards indicating he did attempt to contact her for years after she left.

In 1993 people were asked to send in their memories about Alfred as part of a competition to win four free tickets to Bristol Zoo. This was part of the celebrations held to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Alfred's death which also included a series of talks and tours at the museum. The letters that were received added a great deal of anecdotal information about Alfred to the museum's archive Alfred's eightieth birthday was celebrated at the museum in 2010 with a series of activities and events. Children drew him birthday cards showing the gorilla's continuing public appeal as part of the history of Bristol and as a curiosity for younger visitors to the museum.

Scarlett is a troubled 12-year-old girl who acts out and has attended five schools in two years. She had a brilliant life up until she was 10 years old when her father left them to go live in Ireland with his new partner Clare and her nine-year-old daughter Holly. This affects Scarlett deeply and, with encouragement from her mother, Scarlett grows very angry at her dad, tearing up birthday cards and various other presents given to her from him. Scarlett acts out a lot in school and after her third suspension from Greenhall Academy, she is permanently excluded, due to her causing a riot in the school cafeteria, insulting dinner ladies, and throwing food around due to her being a vegetarian.

In February the band sent out a series of birthday cards directing fans to a website which went live on Valentines Day and debuted the second single, "Birthdays", as well as officially announcing their fourth studio album, More Scared of You than You Are of Me, confirming that it would be released through Pool House Records and produced by Jeff Rosenstock. Exclusive retailer should be Specialist Subject Records, an independent record label and shop based in Bristol, UK. The album was promoted by Triple J in April as their feature album, and a number of solo shows by Wil Wagner around the country, officially being released on the 7th. The band performed the entire album in full at a launch party, which was livestreamed via Facebook. An Australian album tour was announced with A.W., Ceres and Joyce Manor.

In September 1947, at the age of 17, he was ordained a Southern Baptist minister and moved to Cleveland, Tennessee, to attend Bob Jones College (now Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina). A combination of Phelps' failure to retain the West Point appointment (which his father had worked hard to obtain), his abandonment of his father's beloved Methodist faith, and his father's remarriage to a divorcee (Phelps would later become an outspoken critic of divorcees) precipitated a lifelong estrangement from his father and stepmother—and by some accounts, from his sister as well. Phelps apparently never spoke to his family members again, and returned all of their letters, birthday cards, and Christmas gifts for his children, unopened. The Fruit Lady, a seasonal business in Wedgwood (2008) Mr. and Mrs. Nick Jacklin opened the first store in what is now Wedgwood in 1922, before either electricity or city water reached the neighborhood. The building still survives as the garage of a house in the 7500 block of 35th Avenue NE. That same block was later (1949–1974) home of McGillivray's Variety and Gift Store, whose range of wares ranged from penny candy, children's clothing and hundreds of different children's birthday cards to "fine collector dolls… in a better selection than… even… the downtown Frederick & Nelson's" and "sequins in every color manufactured". Half a mile (0.7 km) north, McVicar's Hardware Store (1946–1986)—in the space in the 8500 block of 35th Avenue NE opened shortly after World War II. The shortage of consumer goods right after the war meant that some of their early stock was manufactured on-site from war surplus.

Mrs Lee, who visited her son twice a month throughout his time of imprisonment and encouraged him to do his best in every visit, revealed a vivid conversation with her son, who told her he dreamed of the deceased Annie Leong asking him why he killed her; he also told his mother that Leong forgave him after he told her that he was manipulated by Anthony Ler to kill her before breaking down. She said that she could not imagine her son would done such a thing, as in the past, he brought back a sick bird to be treated until it recovered and he also cried for a few days when his hamster died. Mrs Lee, who has two other children, also said that her son had once asked an ex-inmate to bring her a birthday cake on her doorstep, surprising her. She also told the media that her son was likeable and sociable, even making a lot of friends and never forget their birthdays, at times she was entrusted to send birthday cards to those who gained release.
