As Soo-jung gradually opens up to him, Dal-jae becomes hopeful that she'll someday return his feelings.

Upon watching his father confront Alzheimers, he becomes more worried about his life and his family. In the end, the son becomes hopeful when his father keeps asking what song he can hear while his father's recorded version of Fur Elise is being played, and the son realizes that he can hear his father's breathing within his music. Knowing his job on the line, Hopewell again turns to Sher for help. After promising to help him, she murders Fowler and makes it look like a suicide, arranging the scene to give Hopewell enough evidence to close the case with Fowler revealed as the killer. Hopewell's job is saved, and Sher becomes hopeful that she can now move beyond the trauma of her rape and have a healthy relationship with Hopewell. Her hopes are dashed when Butler's estranged wife reveals that she set up a hidden camera in their house to gather evidence of Butler's infidelity.

Early attempts to sabotage the town's supply depot and granaries also make it clear that there are several Persian sympathizers inside. Under Ballista's direction, the town is prepared for a siege before the arrival of the Persian army, outnumbering the defenders by at least ten to one and led by Shapur in person. Thanks to Ballista's preparations, the Persians' several assaults are stymied over the course of several months, and Ballista becomes hopeful that the town can survive until autumn, when a relief army is expected to arrive. Unfortunately, the defeat of the Persians' "last" assault makes the defenders overconfident, and they fall into drunken celebration.

Becky and Suze go to Becky's new bank manager to ask for a bigger overdraft, but are met with nothing but hostility and disgust. A woman who worked for her former employers Morning Coffee contacts her and asks her to lunch, Becky becomes hopeful, but it turns out she only wants her to come on and be told off by Clare for TV. She becomes depressed and Suze tries to comfort her. On a trip to Luke's office to collect a package for her delivered there, Becky decides that she will see Mel, Luke's secretary, for a bit because she missed her.
