On July 5, General Nathanael Greene called it "a post of vast importance" and, three days later, Col. Varnum's regiment joined its garrison. On July 12, the British frigates Rose and Phoenix and the schooner Tyrol ran the gauntlet past Defiance and the stronger Governor's Island works without firing a shot, and got all the way to Tappan Zee, the widest part of the Hudson River. They stayed there for over a month, beating off harassing attacks, and finally returned to Staten Island on August 18.
The 1892 agreement brought the adventure to an early conclusion. September 1892 saw Humid bin Rashid beating off an attack by Ajman's old rival and sometime ally, Sharjah together with Umm Al Qawain. Despatching a boat full of armed men to aid Humaid in meeting the attack, Rashid bin Maktoum breached the 1853 Maritime Truce and was forced to pay a fine. Humaid bin Rashid was not popular among his peers, having failed to pay allowances from the state revenue to his family members.

When he reached San Cosme, he found its defenses ill-prepared, but the Mexicans defending it put up a good fight before falling back. Ulysses S. Grant found his way into the action along the causeway on Worth's front and helped in hoisting a cannon into the belltower of a nearby church.
Having struggled on and off the pitch in 2016, Sheffield sold Aston to Super League side Leeds Rhinos for £75,000 on a three-year deal, beating off the likes of Wigan and Warrington for his signature. Aston signed a 2-year deal with the Rhinos, the plan was for him to provide cover for Danny McGuire. Aston did not make a single appearance for Leeds in 2017, as he spent most of the season on loan at Featherstone and then Bradford. Ahead of the 2018 season, Aston was released by the Rhinos.
Stagecoach in Merseyside was the trading name of Glenvale Transport Ltd, which was purchased by Stagecoach in 2005. The original company was formed in 2001 following Arriva's takeover of MTL Group in 2000 and was ordered by the Competition Commission to sell the Gillmoss depot to avoid Arriva owning a monopoly of services in Merseyside. Stagecoach failed in an original attempt to obtain the depot in 2001, losing out to Glenvale Transport. Stagecoach bought Glenvale Transport in 2005 beating off competition from rivals FirstGroup, Go-Ahead Group and Transdev Blazefield.
Sargis fell back to the rebel king David's headquarters in Atsquri, but he succeeded in beating off Arghun's attack on his patrimonial fortress of Tsikhisjvari in May 1261. Subsequently, David VII and Sargis gave up the struggle and joined David VI, David VII's cousin and co-king in western Georgia. In 1262, Sargis accompanied David VII to the Il-Khan court. He is reported to have pleaded himself guilty of a revolt in order to save his royal suzerain from Hulagu Khan's rage, citing corruption of the Il-Khan tax officials as a pretext.
Aaron Hadlow (born 4 October 1988) is a professional kiteboarder who has won the Pro Kiteboard Riders' Association (PKRA) World Championships five times. His domination of the sport began in 2004, first encountering substantial competition in the form of Ruben Lenten and Kevin Langeree in 2006. He also won the Red Bull KitePunks event in 2007, held in La Manga, Spain, beating off stiff competition from Ruben Lenten in 2nd, and Neil Hilder in 3rd. Hadlow has continued to expand his repertoire of tricks to keep him in front of the competition.
Team Waterpolo were an English indie pop band who formed in Preston, England, formed in July 2007. The NME made their debut single "Letting Go" its 'Single of the Week', and gave them a place on their New Noise Tour alongside Crystal Castles, Friendly Fires and White Lies. The band signed to Epic Records in August 2008, beating off competition from numerous other record labels, only to be dropped less than 18 months later. The band consisted of Fred Davis on vocals, Nathan Standlee on guitar, Ruggero Lorenzini as DJ, and Lex Dunn on drums.

His subsequent attempts to recover the county were unsuccessful. He was unable to get possession of Manchester, was defeated at the Battle of Chowbent and at the Battle of Lowton Moor, and in 1643 after gaining Preston failed to take Bolton and Lancaster Castle. Finally, after successfully beating off the attack by Sir William Brereton on Warrington, he was defeated at the Battle of Whalley and withdrew to York, whereupon Warrington surrendered to the Parliamentarian forces. In June 1643 he left for the Isle of Man to attend to affairs there.

The only category on offer was Semi-Contact with just four weight divisions ranging from 50 kg/110 lbs to over 60 kg/132 lbs. Due to the somewhat smaller amount of nations competing some nations were allowed more than one competitor per weight division. By the end of the championships West Germany was the strongest nation in women's Semi-Contact beating off a spirited show by Scotland by winning two golds and one silver medal.
'Talking of correspondence reminds me of some very interesting letters which began to arrive in August last, addressed to Coral island in seas west of Singapore. These letters were of a direct consequence of a long and very inaccurate account of my life on the island which appeared without my knowledge in the Evening News, London. Some of my correspondents seemed to think we lived behind a stockade and spent our time beating off the attacks of savages. They exhorted me 'to keep the flag flying' and so on'.
EAM-ELAS partisans The next day, the local population continued arriving in droves to witness the battle and encourage their own. In the words of Dominic Eudes: Nevertheless, the Italians held out during the day, beating off two concerted attacks by the partisans. The Greek attacks were hampered by the presence of Italian aircraft, although many partisans resorted to the trick of laying their cloaks over rocks and letting the Italian pilots strafe them. Negotiations with Germany on broader issues failed. In January 1896 the reckless German Kaiser Wilhelm II escalated tensions in South Africa with his Kruger telegram congratulating Boer President Paul Kruger of the Transvaal for beating off the British Jameson Raid. German officials in Berlin had managed to stop the Kaiser from proposing a German protectorate over the Transvaal.
On 20 July 2007, Campbell signed a four-year contract with Championship club Leicester City for an initial fee of £1.6 million, which could have risen to £2.1 million, reportedly beating off competition from Watford for his signature. League One club Brentford signed El Alagui on 3 July 2012 on a two-year deal, beating off interest from St Johnstone, Kilmarnock, several Championship clubs and clubs abroad. After joining Brentford, El Alagui said he turned down offers from two SPL clubs because manager Uwe Rösler persuaded him to join Brentford. On the opening game of the season, he made his debut, coming on for Sam Saunders, in a 0–0 draw against Bury. On 24 August 2012, he scored his first two Brentford goals in a 5–1 win over Crewe Alexandra.
The Keynotes remained a popular singing group in the United Kingdom throughout the 1950s, winning several awards but having no hit records. In 1949 Johnston formed an all-male singing trio, The Johnston Brothers, the other members being Alan Dean, Eddie Lester and Denny Vaughan (died 1972). They won a recording contract with Decca Records, and had their first UK Top 10 hit in 1953 with "Oh Happy Day". In November 1955, their version of "Hernando's Hideaway", from the movie The Pajama Game, reached the number one spot for two weeks, beating off the American versions by both Johnnie Ray and Archie Bleyer.
Note this source misnumbers the 189th Regiment as the 184th. With the German line breached by 37th Army, in the evening of August 21 the STAVKA issued Order No. 00442, assigning a mission of "beating off the enemy rearguards, throwing them back to the north and, by the close of 22 August... [to] capture the Sălcuța -- Taraclia -- Kenbaran -- Saka River area with the rifle formations." The division launched a night attack which cleared the defenders out of Căușeni Vek and threw them back across the swampy flood plain of the Botna River in the direction of Zaim.
The noise attracts a large group of Bedouin tribesmen and, disregarding the warnings from his men, Fontaine orders his men to open fire, igniting a battle. The Corporal is shot dead and Fontaine breaks down in fear and kills himself. Marco displays his courage and natural flair for leadership by rallying the survivors of the patrol and successfully beating off the attackers. In the video release, this scene was omitted but brief shots of Fontaine and the Corporal were taken from this scene and edited into the climactic battle at the digging site so it appears that both men died there instead.

After beating off competition from four Highland League sides, Hawick Royal Albert and Gateshead United, Ferranti Thistle were accepted into the league by a vote of 21–16 over Inverness Thistle. The club faced a number of obstacles before they could join the Division as their name did not meet stringent SFL rules on overt sponsorship of teams at the time and the City Ground was not up to standard. The local council offered use of Meadowbank Stadium, a modern stadium built in 1970. After an Edinburgh Evening News campaign to find a name for the club, the name Meadowbank Thistle was chosen.

Since AMA was set up, Martin has moved on to design many residential properties, including the Olga Polizzi and William Shawcross residence in West London.
In this affair, Sir John distinguished himself and was now made commander-in- chief of all the royalist forces in Devon. He sat down before Exeter, into which the Earl of Stamford had withdrawn, and which was further defended by the fleet under Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick. Berkeley succeeded in maintaining a blockade, beating off the Earl of Warwick with a loss of three ships, and on 4 September 1643 the Earl of Stamford was compelled to surrender. In 1644 Berkeley was present at the baptism of Henrietta Maria, the king's daughter, who was born at Exeter.
They come across the dead wandering around an area in the tunnel that has collapsed and while sneaking around them, Tara falls down the debris and is trapped. Glenn refuses to leave her and begins beating off the walkers, when they are rescued by Maggie, Sasha, Bob, Eugene, Abraham and Rosita. Reunited with Maggie, they all decide to continue to Terminus where they meet with the refugees. In the season finale "A," it is revealed that they have been imprisoned in a railroad car when Rick and his group are also imprisoned in the same car.
On 27 June 2008, it was announced that Jones was to be released by Manchester United at the end of his contract on 30 June. On 4 July 2008, Jones signed for Hartlepool United on a free transfer, beating off competition from Hearts and Tranmere Rovers. In his first season at Hartlepool United, Jones came second in an end-of-season fans vote for 'Young Player of the Year', resulting in Hartlepool taking up their option to extend Jones' contract to the end of the 2009–10 season. The damaged tanker, supported by Royal Navy destroyers By 14 August Ohio was stopped with no hope of getting her engines going as she had been hit again whilst in tow of Penn. As Ledbury approached the estimated position of the tanker, the destroyer could find no sign of her. A little later, Commander Hill sighted gunfire ahead, and considering it to be Ohios escorts beating off reconnaissance snoops, the destroyer turned course towards the flashes on the horizon. As Ledbury approached Ohio, it was seen that the tanker was lying deep in the water, with a bent line of deck.
Eve started playing football for his local side Dandy Town Hornets before moving to England to play for Derby County's youth team. He spent a short time in the East Midlands before being spotted by scouts at Premier League club Stoke City who signed him to on a two-year development contract in June 2011 beating off competition from Manchester City. Eve made his international debut at the age of 16 making him Stoke City's youngest player to be capped taking the record from Hungarian Ádám Vass. In May 2012 Eve signed a two-year professional contract with Stoke.
Sampson William Francis Collins (born 21 September 1982 in London) is an English journalist, author and film-maker. He is best known as the producer, co-director and co-writer of the award-winning documentary Death of a Gentleman, about corruption in the administration of cricket. Death of a Gentleman was awarded Best Documentary at the prestigious Sports Journalism Awards in February 2016, beating off a strong shortlist including the highly commended Catch Me If You Can (a BBC Panorama investigation into allegations of doping in athletics), and One Day in May (BT Sport's story of the Bradford City fire).
On 18 July 2011, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed they had signed Coulibaly beating off the advances of a host of leading European clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester United following his golden boot-winning performance at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. He scored for the Tottenham Hotspur XI on his debut against Brighton and Hove Albion in Algarve. He scored twice in a 7–1 win for Spurs youth over Inter Milan in their second group game of the NextGen Tournament on 31 August 2011. He also opened the scoring in their third group game away at PSV Eindhoven, where they won 2–1.
These attacks were in most cases in retaliation for wrongs already committed by Arabs in the neighbourhood in which the Jewish attacks occurred. A Police officer opened fire on an Arab crowd and succeeded in beating off an attack on the quarter which lies between Jaffa and Tel Aviv. The worst instance of a Jewish attack on Arabs occurred in this quarter, where the Imam of a mosque and six other persons were killed. According to the Shaw Report, the disturbances were not premeditated and did not occur simultaneously but spread from Jerusalem through a period of days to most outlying centres of population.
In the first Bishops' War Fairfax had commanded a regiment in the king's army; then on the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642 he became commander of the parliamentary forces in Yorkshire, with Newcastle as his opponent. Hostilities began after the repudiation of a treaty of neutrality entered into by Fairfax with the Royalists. At first Fairfax met with no success. He was driven from York, where he was besieging the Royalists, to Selby; then in 1643 to Leeds; and after beating off an attack at that place he was totally defeated on 30 June 1643 at the Battle of Adwalton Moor.

Kelly and Tina Moore.
Both here and in the defences further to the north west a few survivors fought on for some hours. A small party, which eventually succeeded in withdrawing, reported that it had fallen back from post to post, beating off many attacks, and that an officer was last seen at 16.00 still firing a Lewis gun, though with one hand smashed. Sannino's departure initiated a bizarre sequence of events which led to Watford having three further head coaches in little more than a month. On 2 September, Watford confirmed the appointment of former Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Óscar García as the successor to Sannino, beating off competition from fellow Championship side Leeds United for his services. García, however, resigned from his position on 29 September 2014 for health reasons, having been admitted to hospital with chest pains a couple of weeks prior. Billy McKinlay, who had only been appointed first team coach on 26 September 2014, was appointed as his immediate successor on the same day – his first position in management.
Leopards' 102–106 victory in Sheffield meant they finished level on points with title-rivals Birmingham Bullets, but were crowned Champions due to a better head-to-head record over the Midlands team. Birmingham gained some consolation by taking their second Play-off Championship in three years at Wembley Arena, beating off a tough challenge from Thames Valley Tigers, winning 78–75. The Thames Valley Tigers won the National Cup and the Sheffield claimed their first uni-ball Trophy with an 82–79 win over London Towers at the National Exhibition Centre. London Towers represented the Budweiser League in European competition, participating in the EuroCup.
In February 1965 the Army asked Bell to consider different deployment concepts under the Nth Country study. This examined what sort of system would be needed to provide protection against an unsophisticated attack with a limited number of warheads. Using Zeus EX, a few bases could provide coverage for the entire US. The system would be unable to deal with large numbers of warheads, but that was not a concern for a system that would only be tasked with beating off small attacks. With only small numbers of targets, the full MAR was not needed and Bell initially proposed TACMAR to fill this need.

He played 49 of the club's 50 games in the 1966–67 campaign, beating off competition from young hopeful Billy McNulty. Sharrat was an ever-present during the 49 game 1967–68 season. In March 1968, manager Stanley Matthews arranged a £15,000 transfer to Huddersfield Town, however Sharratt refused the move.
On Sunday 26 October 2014, Leah Kalanguka, representing Iganga District, was crowned as Miss Uganda 2014, at a ceremony held at Speke Resort, in Munyonyo, beating off 19 other contestants. Although she represented a district from Eastern Uganda, she missed the eastern regional search. She was away in Tooro, helping to teach youths how to grow cabbages, something her mother, who also hails from the sub-region, had taught her. She was able to enter the contest through the open selection held in Kampala, which was open to all single girls who had never given birth and who were between the ages of 18 and 24.
The KTM riders could not keep up with the pace of Piaggio riders and his title challenge was over in Australia, having been passed by eventual champion Simoncelli and Bautista a few races before. He did however make a long-awaited return to the podium in third place, beating off fellow KTM rider Julián Simón to the line. A forgettable race in Malaysia was followed by an accident in the final round at Valencia. Having been the only rider to keep pace with the new world champion, Simoncelli, Kallio was pushing to the limit to keep up and launch an attack on the final lap.

Hibernia Beating off the Privateer Comet, 10 January 1814: Returning to Port; Thomas Whitcombe, National Maritime Museum On 11 January 1814, Hibernia, of 22 men and six guns, Lennon, master, encountered the American privateer Comet, of 14 guns and 125 men, Thomas Boyle, master. Two days before Comet had encountered the British merchantman west of Saba, but had sailed away when Wasp gave chase, fearing that Wasp was a warship. This time, an engagement ensued. After an intense 9-hour single-ship action that left one man killed on Hibernia, and 11 wounded (who were expected to recover), Hibernia succeeded in driving Comet off.
Right back Luke Young was also brought in on 26 July 2007 for £2.5 million from relegated Charlton Athletic following the departures of Abel Xavier and Stuart Parnaby on free transfers. After just short of a hundred appearances, youth academy graduate James Morrison moved on to West Bromwich Albion for an initial £1.75 million. Two games into the league season, Egyptian striker Mido was brought in from Tottenham Hotspur for £6 million in order to improve the team's attacking options, beating off competition from Sunderland and Birmingham City. Following Mido's arrival, speculation intensified regarding Yakubu, who had been linked with moves to Manchester City, and Birmingham City before Boro announced a fee was agreed with Everton.
Turton began his football career as an amateur for Frickley Colliery where he played for two years before turning professional, with the club beating off interest from several Football League clubs to retain his services. In 1946 he joined Sheffield Wednesday, where he went on to make over 150 Football League and FA Cup appearances. Despite becoming a regular between 1947 and 1949 Turton fell out of favour and made his first appearance in 18 months in November 1950. In January 1951 it was revealed by Eric Taylor that Turton had asked (not for the first time) to be placed on the transfer list as he felt that the Hillsborough crowd was against him.

Tzorvas turned away the Ukrainian attack for the entire 180 minutes over ties in Athens and Donetsk, sustaining the Greeks' 1–0 aggregate victory that sent the team to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he was the starting goalkeeper in all three group matches, beating off competition from Kostas Chalkias and Michalis Sifakis. At the UEFA Euro 2012, however, Kostas Chalkias took over his spot, and Michalis Sifakis played in the final group stage match against Russia and the quarter final against Germany.
Even so, he was unable to establish a true offensive alliance, with the Spanish captains feeling more sympathy with Great Britain (officially their enemy) than for republican and anti-religious France and with the few attempted joint Franco-Spanish operations being defeated. Returning to Mauritius with his last two remaining ships, for three weeks Sercey succeeded in beating off attacks from two ships of the line and two frigates which were blockading the island, in the second battle of the Black River. Nevertheless, despite its captain's exceptional talent, the Preneuse was finally destroyed by the British blockading forces in Mauritius's bay of Tombeau in December 1799, marking the end of Sercey's division and of the campaign.
During the night, the paratroopers fought an extremely fierce battle in three separate groups, beating off continuous counterattacks and soon lacking ammunition. In the morning of August 14, the detachment of ships that had left Vladivostok the previous day, reached Seishin and landed a battalion of marines (710 men under command of Major M.P. Barabolko). The battalion commander led his troops into the city and advanced 1-3 kilometers. However, by introducing fresh forces into battle and supported by the artillery fire of an armored train, the Japanese command pushed the paratroopers back to the port by the night of August 14, where they held a bridgehead 2 km along the front and 1 km deep.
The first clashes of the rebellion took place just after dawn on 24 May. Fighting quickly spread throughout Leinster, with the heaviest fighting taking place in County Kildare where, despite the Army successfully beating off almost every rebel attack, the rebels gained control of much of the county as military forces in Kildare were ordered to withdraw to Naas for fear of their isolation and destruction as at Prosperous. However, rebel defeats at Carlow and the hill of Tara, County Meath, effectively ended the rebellion in those counties. In County Wicklow, news of the rising spread panic and fear among loyalists; they responded by massacring rebel suspects held in custody at Dunlavin Green and in Carnew.

Dance used the delay to gather his ships together so the stronger East Indiamen stood between the French and the weaker country ships. The merchants continued on towards the straits, followed by Linois, who was trying to gauge the strength of the convoy. There were more ships in the convoy than he had expected, and taken in by Dance's manoeuvres and the painted gunports, Linois suspected that several warships were escorting them.
On 16 April 2011, he scored an injury- time winner away at West Ham United. Agbonlahor was less prolific in terms of goalscoring during 2010–11 due to Aston Villa manager Gérard Houllier preferring to use him as a winger. Agbonlahor scored his first goal of the 2011–12 season in Aston Villa's 3–1 home win over Blackburn Rovers on 20 August 2011, and followed this up with the leveller in a 2–2 away draw against Everton ten days later. For his positive performances during the opening month of the season, Agbonlahor was named as Aston Villa's Player of the Month for August 2011, beating off competition from Fabian Delph to the top spot.

PVA fire striking the following waves of Rangers as they crossed the reservoir in daylight grew heavy enough to force part of the last lift to return to the south shore. After the Muslim conquest of Tharad, the wife of Rana Punjaji, a Sodhi by caste, fled with her infant son to her father's house at Parkar. On growing up, her son Vajoji, returning to Tharad in 1244 built a stepwell, vav, and, successfully beating off the attacks of the Multanis, took the title of Rana, and, after his well, called his town Vav. His descendants rule there till British period. Compared with that of the Multani family, the cause of the Vav Rana was popular, and though for fear of drawing on themselves the army of the Patan governor, they dared not attempt to win back Tharad, they slowly spread their rule over many of the smaller holdings, and built up a fairly powerful chiefdom.
The advance continued overnight and into the next day, gaining just 3km but also providing flank cover for the mobile forces of 21st and 4th Tank Army which were attacking in the direction of the Neisse River. Beginning from the latter half of March 20 the 34th Guards Rifle and 4th Guards Tank Corps continued to attack to the west, beating off numerous counterattacks and eventually reaching the east bank of the Krin River. In 2016, a VisitScotland survey voted the Forth Bridge "Scotland's greatest man-made wonder", beating off competition from Stirling Castle, the Caledonian Canal, the Scott Monument, Bell Rock Lighthouse, and Melrose Abbey. The Forth Bridge has appeared in representation on a 2004 one pound coin, issued by the Royal Mint. The Bridge has also featured on various banknotes including the 2007 series issued by the Bank of Scotland, which depicts different bridges in Scotland as examples of Scottish engineering, and the £20 note features the Forth Bridge. In 2014 Clydesdale Bank announced the introduction of Britain's second polymer banknote, a £5 note featuring Sir William Arrol and the Forth Bridge (the first polymer banknote was issued by Northern Bank in 2000).
Chukwuka Onuwa was also instrumental in the famous goal by Sikiru Olatunbosun. During the match, Chukwuka Onuwa found space, lobbed the ball to Stephen Odey who then flicked the ball to Sikiru Olatunbosun who with the presence of mind, flicked it above onrushing defender Etim Matthew and with a 180-degree turn at the edge of the 20-yard box, he unleashed a left-foot drive past the Rangers goalie, sending fans at the "Temple of Soccer" wild. The goal has since gone viral on social media and won the CNN 'Goal of the week' in the process with 82% votes of the 6,647 votes cast, beating off competition from AS Roma's Radja Nainggolan 11%, Youri Tielemans of Anderlecht 6% and Joey Jones of Woking FC 1%.
In spite of severe problems in the landing, his battalion took the Merville Battery. Otway started with about 750 men, few of whom had seen action before; of the 150 who took part in the attack, 65 had been either killed or wounded by the end of the action, which saved a great many Allied lives. His numerically weak and all but exhausted battalion then pushed into Le Plein, where they encountered stiffening resistance and, despite their depleted numbers, took Château St Come on the ridge, and succeeded in beating off two enemy attacks, each of several hours duration, by a regiment of 21st Panzer Division. Two days later during a routine tour of his positions, a stray shell landed close to Otway.
In March 1943 the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, who had been based in the United Kingdom since their return from Norway in June 1940, landed, with the rest of the 24th Guards Brigade, in Tunisia, to fight in the final stages of the campaign in North Africa. The battalion fought in the Medjez Plain area, seeing heavy action at Djebel bou Aoukaz, or 'Bou'. The 1st Irish Guards were tasked with capturing a vital ridge and part of the area was taken on 27 April but further fighting continued for several days with the Irish Guards beating off several German counterattacks and suffering heavy casualties before they were relieved on 1 May. On 22 August 2012 the Company performed the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Mittwoch aus Licht, the last opera of the Licht cycle to be staged, as part of the London 2012 Festival. The production featured the Elysian Quartet performing the famously complex Helicopter String Quartet, with BBC Radio 1's DJ Nihal acting as the moderator (a role previously undertaken by Stockhausen himself). The production later went on to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera and Music Theatre. In 2014 Birmingham Opera Company produced Musorgsky's Khovanskygate: A National Enquiry ( Khovanschina) in a big top "The Freedom Tent"in Cannon Hill Park and was awarded the International Opera Award 2015 for Best New Production, beating off competition from around the world and other shortlisted companies such as Metropolitan Opera, New York.
Since she was already operating in this area, Alfred Robb was one of Fitch's gunboats; and — except for occasional brief assignments on the Mississippi River — she served on the upper rivers through the end of the Civil War. One of the highlights of her service occurred on the night of 3 February 1863 when she joined several other Union warships in beating off a fierce attack by some 4,500 Confederate troops against the small Federal garrison in Fort Donelson, Tennessee. She again entered the limelight on 19 June when a landing party from her engaged a Confederate force of some 400 soldiers. Robbs commanding officer estimated that the Confederates lost about 50 men, killed or wounded, while his ship suffered the loss of only one man killed and two wounded.
After beating off competition from new signing Jamal Blackman, Peacock-Farrell started the 2018–19 season in goal under new head coach Marcelo Bielsa. His understudy Blackman returned to parent club Chelsea with an injury in November, leaving Peacock-Farrell as Leeds' only senior goalkeeper. After Bielsa publicly revealed that Peacock-Farrell would have been dropped the following match had Blackman not been injured, Peacock- Farrell became the match winner on 27 November, saving a 90th-minute penalty against Reading to help Leeds to a 1–0 win. Leeds signed goalkeeper Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid on 17 January 2019 to compete with Peacock-Farrell for a starting place. He dropped to the bench against Rotherham United on 26 January, with Casilla establishing himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.
It engaged primarily in escort work flying missions to cover bombers engaged in long-range operations against strategic objectives in Italy, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Rumania, and Bulgaria. On 2 April 1944, the squadron earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for beating off attacks by enemy fighters while escorting bombers attacking ball-bearing and aircraft production facilities at Steyr, Austria, enabling the bombers to strike their targets. The squadron provided escort for reconnaissance operations, supported Operation Dragoon, the invasion of Southern France, in August 1944, and on numerous occasions flew long-range missions to strafe and dive-bomb motor vehicles, trains, bridges, supply areas, airdromes, and troop concentrations in an area extending from France to the Balkans. The 37th Fighter Squadron was inactivated in Italy on 9 September 1945.

Bohemond saw the opportunity to use the crusade for his own ends at the siege of Antioch. When his nephew Tancred left the main army at Heraclea Cybistra and attempted to establish a footing in Cilicia, the movement may have been already intended as a preparation for Bohemond's eastern principality. Bohemond was the first to take up a position before Antioch (October 1097) and he played a considerable part in the siege, in gathering supplies, beating off Radwan of Aleppo's attempt to relieve the city from the east, and connecting the besiegers on the west with the Genoese ships which lay in the port of St Simeon.
In 2000, school friends Scott Andrews, Gavin Jessop, Matt Rise, Mike Cloke, and Steven Hopkins decided to form a band, originally known as Opium (not to be confused with the Merthyr-based band of the same name). Mike Cloke then left the band and songs such as an Art of fear and Lacerate/Break were written during this time. After a name change demo was recorded at Frontline Studios, Caerphilly, South Wales which won the band the opportunity to play the UK showcase that is In the City, Manchester. The band's chaotic live shows created a buzz on the UK music scene, and after winning 'best unsigned act' at the 2002 Welsh Music Awards (beating off competition from bands such as Funeral for a Friend and Jarcrew), the band then planned releasing their debut single through Cardiff's indie record label, Cascade.
Methuen blamed a lack of preparation and training for the yeomanry's poor performance, and later stated that, having gained experience during the campaign, he would "place implicit reliance in them after a short time". After seven months as commander of the Imperial Yeomanry, Major-General Reginald Brabazon also underlined the acquisition of experience when he wrote that it was "as valuable a corps of fighting men as ever wore the Queen's uniform".Hay p. 197–198 That the Imperial Yeomanry did on occasion perform well was exemplified by the action at Rustenburg where, although caught napping and losing the only column operating in the area at the time, the yeomen had fought as well as the regular infantry, and the 74th (Dublin) Company earned high praise for its conduct in beating off an attack on a convoy at Rooikopjes on 24 August.
Navas’ fifth season at Real Madrid began with the much- anticipated arrival of Thibaut Courtois to compete for the number 1 goalkeeping spot. Navas then went on to start the opening game of La Liga, comfortably keeping his first clean sheet of the season with a 2–0 win over Getafe CF. His performances in the last Champions League campaign led him to be voted as the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season beating off competition from then Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. On 9 January 2019 Navas made his 150th appearance in all competitions for Madrid in their 3–0 home win against Leganés in the Copa del Rey.
In May 2009, Mackay transferred from Livingston to St Johnstone, who had won promotion to the Scottish Premier League. Three years on, Manager Steve Lomas praised his predecessor for his role of signing Mackay and Davidson. Mackay made his debut for the club, in the first round of the Scottish League Cup, where he came on as substitute in the 71st minute, in a 5–0 win over Stenhousemuir and fifteen days later, Mackay made his league debut for the club, in a 2–2 draw against Motherwell. Having been in the first team as right-back, beating off competitions from Gary Irvine, Mackay would then score his first goal for the club, in a 1–1 draw against St Mirren. At the end of the 2009–10 season, Mackay made 40 appearances in all competitions, as well as, scoring once and then signed a two-year contract.
After defeating a US Navy gunboat flotilla, a military force totaling 4,370 (composed of British Army, Royal Marines, and Royal Navy detachments for shore service) under Ross was landed in Virginia. After beating off an American force of 1,200 on the 23rd, on the 24th they attacked the prepared defenses of the main American force of roughly 6,400 (US Army soldiers, militiamen, US Marines, and US Navy sailors) in the Battle of Bladensburg. Despite the considerable disadvantage in numbers (standard military logic dictates that a three-to-one advantage is needed in carrying out an attack on prepared defences) and sustaining heavy casualties, the British force routed the American defenders and cleared the path into the capital (President James Madison and the entire government fled the city, and went North, to the town of Brookeville, Maryland). The Burning of Washington took place that night before the force returned to the ships.

After an abortive attempt at a treaty agreement had fallen through, the regiment participated in the second attack to capture them on 26 February in the Battle of the Bogue. The force slowly moved up-river, taking Canton on 24 May and with the 26th beating off a Chinese counter-attack on 30 May, before withdrawing to Hong Kong after another provisional treaty was signed.Carter, pp. 189–193 Whilst resting at Hong Kong, the 26th made an expedition against Amoy in August, before being moved up the coast to Ningbo at the end of December aboard , equipped with newly modified percussion muskets.Carter, pp. 193–194 They arrived at Ningpo on 7 February 1842, and took up garrison there.
This EP, paired with the loyal following their successful UK tour gave them, led to an appearance at the Download Festival in 2003. After a series of gigs after the Download Festival with Biffy Clyro and Hundred Reasons, the band was signed to Geffen Records for the release of their first major album, God Doesn't Care Before the release of the new album the band recruited Joseph Grillo to the band on guitar/vocals from Garrison, a band that Instruction toured with during October 2003. One of the songs from the hotly anticipated album, Breakdown was already gaining cult status and the video of the subsequent song topped the bill of Fuse TV's Ovenfresh show, beating off competition from the likes of New Found Glory, Beastie Boys and The Libertines. The album was released in August 2004 to massive critical acclaim and Instruction were now well on the way to stardom.
He was 20 years old, and a Second Lieutenant in the 15th Bn., The Hampshire Regiment (later the Royal Hampshire Regiment), British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 20 September 1917 near Tower Hamlets, east of Ypres, Belgium, Second Lieutenant Moore volunteered to make a fresh attack on a final objective and went forward with some 70 men, but they met such heavy opposition that when he arrived at his objective he had only one sergeant and four men. Nothing daunted he at once bombed a large dug-out, taking 28 prisoners, two machine-guns and a light field-gun. Gradually more officers and men arrived, numbering about 60 and he held the post for 36 hours beating off counter-attacks, until his force was reduced to 10 men. He eventually got away his wounded and withdrew under cover of thick mist.
He then stayed at his post with a sergeant and several men who had been badly wounded, beating off bayonet attacks with revolvers, the Vickers gun having been destroyed. Although exhausted from want of food and gas poisoning, as well as from fighting and attending to the wounded, Lieutenant Ker only surrendered when all his ammunition was spent and the position overrun - he had managed to hold 500 of the enemy off for three hours. He was however captured in the event and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner-of-war only being released in December 1918. He was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 4 September 1919 and was presented the medal personally by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 26 November 1919. On 11 November 1920 he was one of the 100 Victoria Cross winners chosen as the guard of honour, escorting the gun carriage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey.
The terrain was difficult with no roads and consisting of mangrove swamps and rice paddies that prevented tanks or artillery coming ashore initially. The whole area was dominated by a small wooded ridge known as Hill 170. Nevertheless, on 22 January a landing took place, spearheaded by No. 1 Commando, and over the course of the next week or so they and the rest of the brigade were involved in heavy fighting around Hill 170 and the surrounding areas, before finally being relieved on 1 February 1945. During this time No. 5 Commando was placed under the operational command of the 51st Indian Brigade and took part in a number of attacks around positions known as Milford and Pinner, before participating in the final stages of No. 1 Commando's defence of Hill 170, when two troops from the commando reinforced the defenders on 31 January and then took part in beating off the final attack on the following morning.
During these actions he got a reputation for unnecessary cruelty, sacking and massacring entire towns in command of whole fleets of buccaneers. In 1658, after beating off a Spanish attack, he raided the coast of South- America; failing to capture a Spanish treasure fleet, he destroyed Tolú and Santa Maria in present-day Colombia instead; in 1659 he plundered Cumaná, Puerto Cabello and Coro in present-day Venezuela where a large haul of silver in twenty chests was seized. The Spanish government considered him a common pirate and mass murderer, protesting to no avail to the English government of Oliver Cromwell about his conduct. Because he had shared half of the bounty of his 1659 raid, about a quarter of a million pounds, with the buccaneers against the explicit orders of Edward D'Oyley, the English Commander of Jamaica, he was arrested for embezzlement and sent back to England in the Marston Moor in 1660.
Martyn was signed by boss Howard Wilkinson in the summer of 1996/97, along with another high-profile capture in the form of Britain's most expensive teenager, Lee Bowyer. Martyn's form for United, both at home and on the continent in European competition was outstanding – most notably in a man- of-the-match display at the Olympic Stadium v AS Roma in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup campaign, when Leeds reached the semi-finals. Martyn was also a huge part of the squad that eliminated illustrious clubs such as Barcelona, Lazio and Deportivo La Coruna in the following season's UEFA Champions League campaign, leading them to the last four. In total, Martyn played as Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper for six seasons and his consistency was such that years later at a supporters' dinner, the Cornishman was named officially as United's greatest ever goalkeeper, beating off competition from the likes of Gary Sprake and John Lukic – men who both won championship medals at Elland Road.

After screening an oiler group to Majuro, Charrette sailed on for a brief overhaul at Pearl Harbor until 15 March 1944, when she put out to rejoin the carriers for attacks on Japanese ships which had retreated from Truk to the Palaus, a necessary preliminary to the New Guinea operation. A mighty force was assembled at Majuro for this bold thrust deep into Japanese-held waters, which sailed on 22 March. Charrette joined in beating off a Japanese air attack on 28 March, and continued her protective screening through the strikes of 30 March and 1 April. The carriers returned to Majuro 6 April, and sailed 7 days later to strike at airfields and defenses on New Guinea itself and to provide direct support to the landings at Humboldt Bay 22 April. After replenishing at Manus, Charrette sailed on with the carriers to screen strikes against Truk 29 April, and to guard the force's battleships as they pounded a bombardment at Ponape 1 May. Charrettes next contribution came in the lengthy Marianas operation, for which she sailed 6 June 1944.
In November 2010 Becchio entered contract negotiations with Leeds over extending his contract. In the game against Hull City he suffered a black eye after being elbowed by Ian Ashbee Becchio scored his seventh, eighth and ninth goals of the season with a 17-minute hat-trick against Bristol City after coming on as a second-half substitute On 3 December 2010, Becchio won The Championship PFA Player of the month Award for November beating off competition from Adel Taarabt, Lewis McGugan, Scott Sinclair and Jay Bothroyd for the award. He scored his tenth and eleventh goals of the season when he scored a brace against Crystal Palace from 1–0 down. Leeds confirmed that contract talks with Becchio were ongoing and had only been delayed due to translation issues. Becchio scored his 12th goal of the season against Burnley. On 18 December 2010, after the 2–0 home win against Queens Park Rangers which took Leeds to second place in the Championship, Becchio signed a new three and a half year contract with Leeds.
During this time they were deployed around Villers-Bretonneux in order to defend the approaches to the strategically important town of Amiens, taking part in a counter-attack at Hangard Wood in late March before beating off a concerted German attack on Villers-Bretonneux on 4 April, where the battalion suffered greatly when the Germans attacked with gas. This was to be the 36th Battalion's last contribution to the war, as it was disbanded on 30 April 1918 in order to reinforce other 9th Brigade units. The earlier campaigns had severely depleted the AIF in France and since 1916 the flow of reinforcements from Australia had slowly been decreasing as the war dragged on and casualties mounted.
