John responded by begging the aid of Charles in his capacity as king of Italy and crowned Charles emperor on 12 February 881. This was accompanied by hopes of a general revival in western Europe, but Charles proved to be unequal to the task.

Guizotia jacksonii is a low (about 1 cm high) perennial, herbaceous, creeping plant, which branches sparingly, each hairless stem 3–30 cm long, that makes roots at the nodes and sometimes forms clumps. The leaves are set opposite along the stem and may be unequal to each other, lacking a leaf stalk, oval in shape 1–6¼ cm long and ½–2½ cm wide, merged at the narrowed foot with the opposing leaf. The edge of the leaf has distanced and very small teeth ending in a gland, and are often rolled back. There may be some hairs on the leaf or only on the veins.

Evidently unsatisfied with Archbishop Bernard's performance as Archbishop, Pope Innocent sent him a letter on 15 April 1212, remarking that when a bishop feels himself to be unequal to the task of governing his diocese, he should ask himself whether he ought to put down his burden. He then pointed out that the diocese of Auch had fallen on bad times during Bernard's administration, or rather maladministration, and that it might be appropriate for him to consider a spontaneous resignation.J.
