Ron François first came to notice as the lead singer and bass player of the English R&B; band The Strutters, which was involved in the London Pub Rock scene of the mid 1970s. In 1978 he recorded the debut album Stateless with the Lene Lovich band, from which came the top-three UK single "Lucky Number". He then toured with the Lene Lovich band on the Stiff Records "Be Stiff Route 78 Tour" of the UK and New York. From 1978 to 1981, François worked with ex- Strutters Mark Kjeldsen and Bobbi (Irwin) Trehern, on a project they named The Sinceros.

Barrel sealed manifolds with two O-rings in parallel are more tolerant of minor misalignment and varied centre distance than face-sealed manifolds with single O-ring seals which are more likely to leak if impacted. Isolation manifolds provide the possibility of closing off one cylinder if there is an unrecoverable leak, conserving the remaining gas in the other cylinder. Cylinder or manifold valve knob extension operators (slobwinders) can be stiff, can trail and snag on things, and can be difficult to find when needed. Valve- and manifold protector frames are not normally necessary and may be worse line-traps than the valves.

In ternary form each section is self- contained both thematically as well as tonally (that is, each section contains distinct and complete themes), and ends with an authentic cadence. Dough scraper Dough scrapers, or pastry scrapers, are more rigid implements, often made of a metal rectangle with a wooden, plastic, or metal handle running along one long edge not only for more comfortable grip, but also to add rigidity; some bowl scrapers, however, are designed to be stiff enough to serve a dual purpose and are sold as such. After the release of her successful debut album Stateless (1978), Lovich embarked on the Be Stiff '78 tour along with four other artists from the recording label. In the middle of 1979, she had two top 20 hits, "Lucky Number" and "Say When", and was voted "Top Female Recording Artist of the Year" by Music Week. She went on to record her second more improved album and enhance the quality of productions by using modern technology and instruments to achieve a better sound than her previous record. She again collaborated with Les Chappell and also brought Judge Smith, who wrote two songs on the album.

Flexible plywood is designed for making curved parts, a practice which dates back to the 1850s in furniture making. Aircraft grade plywood, often Baltic birch, is made from three or more plies of birch, as thin as thick in total, and is extremely strong and light. At thick, mahogany three- ply "wiggle board" or "bendy board" come in sheets with a very thin cross- grain central ply and two thicker exterior plies, either long grain on the sheet, or cross grain. Wiggle board is often glued together in two layers once it is formed into the desired curve, so that the final shape will be stiff and resist movement.

Limp Records was an independent record label in Rockville, Maryland, that operated from 1978 to 1982. Run by Skip Groff out of his Yesterday and Today Records store, Limp was one of the first labels releasing music from the nascent D.C. punk scene. The label's more notable output includes the first Bad Brains release (a song on The Best of Limp (…Rest of Limp)), the second Minor Threat record (a split release with Dischord), and the first record by Black Market Baby. The label's first release was the Slickee Boys second EP. Much like Stiff Records had Devo's "Be Stiff," a song entitled "Stay Limp" by the Raisinets was included on Limp's :30 Over DC compilation.

They would reunite professionally in the sci-fi thriller The Fly (1986), loosely based on George Langelaan's 1957 short story of the same name and in which Davis portrayed a science journalist and the love interest of an eccentric scientist. Caryn James, of The New York Times, found her to be "stiff" in The Fly, a film she considered "intense, all right, but not scary or sad, or even intentionally funny". Stating that it was in the "so- bad-it's-good" category for only two minutes, he found the actors to be "stiff and uninvolved" in delivering their lines, and that it seemed more like an "old television horse opera" than a horror film with more slow-paced filler than action sequences, and the few bits of action ruined by the "corniest possible 'action' music". Santa Quest is a feature documentary that follows John's journey to bring home the gold for Canada at the Santa Winter Games in Sweden. He knows the competition will be stiff and he only has six weeks to train so he enlists the help of various friends and experts to help him prepare. En route to Sweden he stops in Italy to visit the bones of St. Nicholas, then it's onto Vienna to visit a Christmas market, next stop Finland and the Santa Village, and finally the Santa Winter Games in Sweden. With barely any time to recover from the grueling competition he heads back home to start a 15 city North American tour with the Trailer Park Boys for their live Christmas show.

Growing up in an African-American family in an affluent white suburb of Chicago, he suffered something of an identity crisis (once describing himself as being "too white for his black friends, but too black to be accepted by his white friends"), and this was particularly apparent in his interactions with some of the hospital's African-American nursing and support staff (most notably orderly Luther Hawkins and nurse Eleanor Skilling (Vivian Bonnell)). He briefly dated a young physical therapist (Rosanne Katon) during season 2, but she quickly found him to be stiff and pompous. Chandler began dating Dr. Roxanne Turner during season 4, and they remained together for the remainder of the series. Chandler was named Chief Resident during the final year of his residency.

It is, however, not comfortable, for two reasons: the cervix is full of nociceptors (pain nerves), and the brush used to collect cells has to be stiff enough to scrape them off of the surrounding tissue. So it can be uncomfortable, but it is generally quick, and the information obtained may be critical. People with underlying pain or tissue diseases that can react to nociceptors being scraped or to excessive cold in the mucous membranes should take appropriate precautions and discuss the process ahead of time with their providers, in writing if necessary. For example, if a person has not spoken for awhile and then wants to speak, their tongue may be stiff at first causing the words to come out a little garbled, but after a few seconds of trying to speak, the tongue muscle will loosen up and then they can speak normally for the remainder of the time that they are conversing. Patients report that repeated contraction of muscle alleviates present myotonia with each contraction, such that myotonia is almost absent after a few contractions of the same muscle. The effect lasts about five minutes. There have been several proposed mechanisms for this phenomenon, but none have been conclusive; one theory is that the Na+/K+-ATPase is stimulated during the myotonic activity by increased intracellular Na+ in the cytosol of the muscle cell, increasing the activity of the Na+/K+-ATPase.

It was reissued on CD for a limited time in 1994 by Disky Communications and included three bonus tracks: the "Whole Wide World" single B-side "Semaphore Signals" and two versions of Devo's "Be Stiff," a song that many artists on the Stiff Records label had covered as a promotional vehicle. According to Eric's website, most versions of this LP feature speeded-up versions of the tracks, in which the songs are a semitone higher than recorded. Some of these versions have also appeared on various compilations throughout the years. In a 1995 interview with Peter Doggett (found on the limited edition Rykodisc release An Overview Disc), former Stiff Records label-mate Elvis Costello mentions that, due to their unusual vocal styles, Stiff had originally envisioned a split LP between himself and Eric, with each artist taking one side of the record.

In the decades that followed the war, surrounding farm communities gave way to tracts of suburban houses, encouraging the city's middle-class blacks as well as whites to move into newer houses with spacious yards. With the above-mentioned change in the travel market, prompted by the opening of the Garden State Parkway in 1947 and the opening of Monmouth Mall away in Eatontown in 1960, Asbury Park's downtown became less of an attraction to shoppers. Office parks built outside the city resulted in the relocation of accountants, dentists, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals. Moreover, the opening of Great Adventure (on July 1, 1974), a combination theme park and drive-through safari located on a lake in Jackson Township—and close to a New Jersey Turnpike exit—proved to be stiff competition for a mile-long stretch of aging boardwalk amusements.

Dave Robinson, soon to be Stiff Records impresario and former Brinsleys manager, introduced them to Graham Parker and Parker also started rehearsing with them at the Tavern. A decision was made to keep the two acts separate for contractual purposes - publishing and record deals - and the band recorded a live record “at Marble Arch” and the first Graham Parker record, Howling Wind, at the end of 1975, and at the beginning of 1976, the combo hit the road. Andrews' keyboard playing was central and critical to the sound and success of the Rumour. Where later bands in the developing punk genre often pared their ensemble sound down to guitar, bass and drums, the Rumour had an expansive, sophisticated way with arrangements, which traded heavily on their immersion in the sounds of American soul music and the work of Bob Dylan (especially with the Band) and Van Morrison.
