Respected sports prognosticator Grantland Rice picked North Carolina under Carl Snavely as the frontrunner to win the Southern Conference championship and predicted they would finish as the 18th ranked team in the nation. On 21 December 2011, Soler was announced by RTVE as the Spanish representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. Soler and her team picked four songs to be in contention for the Eurovision Song Contest, and she sang three of these at the Spanish national final. "Quédate conmigo", together with "Tu vida es tu vida", was selected directly by Soler for the national final, whereas "Ahora o nunca" was selected through an online vote over "Me despido de ti". Unlike "Tu vida es tu vida", "Quédate conmigo" was not a song from Soler's latest album Una mujer como yo, she chose it from over 200 proposals she received through her record company.

In 2011, Notre Dame returned 21 of its 24 starters from the previous year and was thought to be in contention for a BCS bowl bid. However, in the opening game against South Florida, Notre Dame outgained its opponent 508–254 in yardage but lost 23–20 due to five turnovers (most within scoring range). The next week the Irish built a 24–7 lead against its rival Michigan, but lost yet again, 35–31, due to five turnovers. The following week the Irish beat Michigan State 31–13; The one-sided victory over the Spartans was the first of four wins in a row, until the USC Trojans came to South Bend.

On January 2, 2009, it was revealed that the choices were pared down to Lyceum, EAC and Arellano. However, after a month of delay, the policy board failed to garner a minimum number of votes to admit a new member; thus for this season, there will only be seven schools participating, while the schools that were considered will still be in contention for next season.

The Weight of These Wings received highly positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 81 out of 100, which indicates "universal acclaim" based on 11 reviews. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic rated the album at five out of five and in his review stated "It may have mainstream songs, but The Weight of These Wings isn't produced like a country-pop album, so it demands attention and rewards close listening." Paul Grein of HITS Daily Double predicted the album to be in contention for Album of the Year at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

Even teams with a dominant lead have a strong interest in maintaining possession to run down the clock, which often puts them in the position to score more points. At all levels of play, it is generally accepted that players or teams close to breaking significant records can run up the score without it being seen as overtly disrespectful. In fact, many offensive records almost require running up the score to be in contention as a result of records set in eras in which leagues were less balanced, seasons were of a different length, or rules were substantially different. In one instance that did not involve the score, but where a long-established record could have easily been broken, a coach was praised for his sportsmanship.

On his first run as a five-year-old Capri started 5/4 favourite for Group 3 Vintage Crop Stakes over fourteen furlongs at Navan Racecourse on 28 April but finished a well-beaten fifth of the nine runners behind the four-year-old gelding Master of Reality. He disappointed again at Leopardstown in the following month, coming home third to Twilight Payment when odds-on favourite for the Listed Levmoss Stakes. On 20 June at Royal Ascot the horse started a 16/1 outsider for the Gold Cup in which he was ridden by Donnacha O'Brien. He looked to be in contention early in the straight but faded in the closing stages to finish sixth, eight lengths behind the winner Stradivarius.

Spaniard Francisco Galdos earned fourth place overall as he found a way to stay with the elite riders every single time it mattered. Due to a tough break Lucien Van Impe finished third and because he caught some breaks and wanted it more than anyone Hennie Kuiper made it a two-way race between himself and Thévenet by the end of the Tour. Hennie Kuiper would never win the Tour and the 1977 Tour was the closest he ever came, although he did finish second one additional time in the 1980 Tour.

On 14 November 2006, RTÉ announced that they had internally selected Irish traditional group Dervish to represent Ireland in Helsinki. Before the announcement of Dervish as the Irish contestant, many names were rumoured to be in contention to represent Ireland, with the front-runner being three-time Eurovision winner, Johnny Logan, after he said in an interview on Tubridy Tonight that he would represent Ireland in the contest once again if "everything was right, and that everyone was in agreement", including the song he would sing. However, a deal between RTÉ and Logan was not agreed upon and Logan was not selected to represent Ireland at the contest. Other rumoured artists included You're A Star winner Lucia Evans, host of the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 Ronan Keating and winner of the 1992 contest Linda Martin.

McMurray at the 2017 Toyota/Save Mart 350 McMurray served as a Fox NASCAR analyst for the Xfinity Series race at Las Vegas. McMurray's first top 5 came at the GEICO 500 when he managed to avoid the Big One and finish 2nd to Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in an overtime finish.

Glenn Gamboa of Newsday rated the album an "A", calling it "great stories told extraordinarily well," and "nothing short of a musical miracle" in today's country music climate.

In his first tournament as an ōzeki Takayasu won eight of his first ten matches and appeared to be in contention for the championship, but a run of four consecutive defeats followed and he ended with a record of 9–6. The September tournament saw three of the four yokozuna withdraw beforehand due to injuries, and Takayasu seemed poised to challenge for the championship, but he injured a muscle in his right thigh in a match on the second day, and was himself forced to withdraw. During the November tournament, Takayasu managed to win 8 matches, saving his rank but was again forced to withdraw after Day 12 due to a thigh injury. In January 2018 he had his best result to date as an ōzeki, finishing runner-up to surprise winner Tochinoshin with a 12–3 record.

Croudson retired in 2007 through ongoing injury woes aged only 26. He returned home to Grimsby and was appointed part-time Goalkeeping coach at Grimsby Town during the 2007–2008 season by Alan Buckley, who was now in his third spell with the club. On 9 July 2010 Croudson played the second half of Grimsby's 1–0 pre-season friendly victory over Non League side Brigg Town. On 30 August 2010 due to injuries to Grimsby keepers Kenny Arthur and Nick Colgan, Croudson was considered to be in contention to make a shock return to the sport to play against Histon in Town's Conference National fixture. Manager Neil Woods eventually confirmed he would play Croudson chosen over youth team keeper Rob Peet and Steve made his first appearance for his home town club since playing in a 2–0 defeat at home to Rotherham United on 5 October 2001.

He had a chance to win an event early in the season at the Doral-Ryder Open. He played in the final group with Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf for the 36-hole Sunday finale, two off the lead. On the first hole, Powers hit three shots into the water which led to a quintuple bogey 10. He would not be in contention again, ultimately recording a third round 80 (+8). Despite this disappointing finish, Powers would go on to his best season up to that point, recording his first top-10 finishes and keeping his card for the first time. Powers' next good chance to win was at the 1981 Western Open. He tied the 36-hole record at 136 (−8). Like his experience at Doral, however, he had a disappointing third round, shooting a 75 (+3) to fall out of the lead. He would shoot a solid 70 in the final round, however, birdieing 5 of his final 7 holes, to finish in a tie for second place.

During the subsequent off-season, Luc Robitaille returned to the Kings after two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, and would go on to lead the team in scoring for the 2003–04 season. However, Palffy suffered shoulder injuries of his own and sat out the majority of the season, while his two L.A.P.D. linemates sat out the entire season, with Deadmarsh later retiring after the 2004–05 NHL lockout and Allison playing one last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs before ultimately retiring. With a record of 28–20–16–7 and 81 points and 11 games left in the season, the Kings looked to be in contention for the 2004 playoffs, and Head Coach Andy Murray was just one win away from becoming the most winningest coach in franchise history. Los Angeles, however, lost all 11 remaining games, squandering their playoff chances and Murray's opportunity at Kings history. Statistically, for the 2002–03 season, the Kings lost a franchise-record 536 man-games (number of games missed by individual players) due to injury; in comparison, for the 2003–04 season, they broke a previous NHL record with 629 man-games lost to injury.

At Bristol, Stewart blew his tire on lap 3 and cut a brake line; he came back out over 20 laps down, unable to contend for victory. At Fontana, Stewart ran well for most of the day, leading laps and running on an alternate pit cycle, and nearly contended for the win. However, due to a late-race incident when Joey Logano blocked him on the last restart, Stewart ended up in 22nd place at the bottom of the lead lap. After the race, Stewart, angered, confronted Logano, who had just wrecked his car after battling with Denny Hamlin hard into the last turn, on pit road in a scuffle involving both teams' crews. At Richmond, Stewart looked to be in contention for the win as he was 5th on a green-white-checkered finish, but in a fashion similar to his confrontation with Logano at Fontana; after a poor restart he lost a few positions. On the last lap, Kurt Busch tapped his bumper, moving Stewart out of the 2nd groove all the way up to the top of the race track subsequently losing about 5 positions coming home 18th while Busch took a 9th- place finish.

Grace and his amateur colleagues took a measure of revenge at Prince's as they defeated the Australians by an innings and 1 run. The match began on Monday, 17 June and was completed within two days. The Australians won the toss and decided to bat, but were bowled out for only 75 with Grace and Allan Steel taking 4 wickets apiece. The Gentlemen scored 139 (Grace 25) and then dismissed the tourists for 63, Grace taking 2 wickets in support of Steel's 7–35.
