The 170 -metre-long castle was divided into two sections, the oval bailey facing the lake, the elongated one facing the hinterland. A mighty neck ditch terminated the eastern side 'land' side. Two cross ditches between the two castle baileys offered further protection.

346 According to historian of religion Olav Hammer, Bailey's early writings of communications with the Tibetan were well received within the society, but society president Annie Besant questioned Bailey's claims of communications with "the Tibetan" and allowed the Baileys to be expelled from the organization. According to Bailey, she had come to see the society as authoritarian and involved with "lower psychic phenomena".

Allen Brown described Château Gaillard as "one of the finest castles in Europe" and the military historian Sir Charles Oman wrote that: Despite Château Gaillard's reputation as a great fortress, Liddiard highlights the absence of a well in the keep as a peculiar weakness, and the castle was built on soft chalk, which would have allowed the walls to be undermined. But other sources evoke the presence of three wells in the three different baileys and the soft chalk does not really weaken the very thick walls. Its weakness is more the result of its location (higher hill behind), its extension (more than ) on a long narrow ridge and the difficulties in linking up the different baileys to allow a good communication and to secure an efficient defence without a large garrison.Joseph Decaëns, "Le château Gaillard" in L'architecture normande, Tome II, p.
After Aubrey was fired from the network in February 1965 (amid charges of "conflict of interest" in scheduling the show and two other Brasselle productions without formal pilot episodes), The Baileys of Balboa fulfilled its 26-episode commitment, and was abruptly canceleddue, in part, to its poor ratings opposite ABC's highly successful twice-weekly soap opera, Peyton Place. Tower houses are free- standing multi-storey stone towers usually surrounded by a wall (see bawn) and ancillary buildings. Gaelic families had begun to build their own tower houses by the 15th century.

Catholicism was also strong in the new township of St Albans.
These simple fortifications were called ringworks. The enceinte was the castle's main defensive enclosure, and the terms "bailey" and "enceinte" are linked. A castle could have several baileys but only one enceinte. Castles with no keep, which relied on their outer defences for protection, are sometimes called enceinte castles; these were the earliest form of castles, before the keep was introduced in the 10th century.

The plateau above the Wiesent valley was already in use in prehistoric times as a settlement area. Archaeologically, traces of settlement of the Urnfield, the late Hallstatt and early La Tène cultures, the early Roman Empire and Great Migration period have been documented. The unusual size of the medieval castle and its two vast outer baileys with their deep ditches could indicate an early medieval hillfort.

35; Collardelle and Mazard, pp.72-3. Yet another theory suggests that the design emerged as a result of the pressures of space on ringworks and that the earliest motte-and-baileys were converted ringworks.King (1991), p.37. Finally, there may be a link between the local geography and the building of motte-and-bailey castles, which are usually built on low-lying areas, in many cases subject to regular flooding.
Their survival story is known as 117 Days Adrift despite the duration actually being longer because initial news reports were wrong and it was decided to keep this name for consistency. The Baileys' journey began when they left Southampton, England, in their yacht Auralyn. Their intended destination was New Zealand. They passed safely through the Panama Canal in February and were on their way to the Galapagos Islands.
In many cases there was also a brewery, a bakehouse and a kitchen, if the latter was not located in the hall or palas. An outer bailey was often called a base court in England. Depending on topography it could also be referred to as a lower bailey or lower ward, the keep being in the upper bailey or ward. Chepstow Castle has lower, middle and upper baileys.
Rhuddlan was planned as a concentric castle. It has a unique 'diamond' in layout as the gatehouses are positioned at the corners of the square baileys instead of along the sides like at Flint, Harlech or Beaumaris. Records of construction costs show that it was the major piece of building work being carried out by the English during the late 1270s. The inner ward has defensive walls with twin-tower gatehouses.
Baileys Irish Cream was created by Tom Jago of Gilbeys of Ireland, a division of International Distillers & Vintners, as it searched for something to introduce to the international market. The process of finding a product began in 1971 and production research began in earnest after consultants David Gluckman and Hugh Seymour-Davies (also Mac Macpherson has claimed to be part of the consultant team) — an alcoholic drink made of Irish whiskey and cream that, they remarked, "didn't taste punishing". The formulation of Baileys was motivated partly by the availability of alcohol from a loss making distillery (part of International Distillers & Vintners, and likely W&A; Gilbey) and a desire to use surplus cream from another business, Express Dairies, also owned by Grand Metropolitan resulting from the increased popularity of semi-skimmed milk. It included alcohol, cream and Nesquik (the chocolate milk based powder drink) produced by Nestle; the initial formulation process took approximately 45 minutes.
222 Assault Sqn was in Second Army Reserve, then supported 3rd Division in crossing the flooded approaches to Bremen, using their petards to flush defenders out of strongpoints, and skid Baileys to cross breaches in the causeways. Their final team member is Sarge (Victoria Pratt), whose sister belongs to a cult that regards the Baileys with reverence and willingly sacrifices themselves to them. Humanity has moved underground and built a complex of elaborate shafts and tunnels created by the "shaft builders" to survive the Bailey menace. Cleo (pictured above on the right) wows the 26th century denizens with her philosophical sayings (many of which come from the 20th century popular culture).
As is the case with milk, cream will curdle whenever it comes into contact with a weak acid. Milk and cream contain casein, which coagulates, when mixed with weak acids such as lemon, tonic water, or traces of wine. While this outcome is undesirable in most situations, some cocktails (such as the cement mixer, which consists of a shot of Baileys mixed with the squeezed juice from a slice of lime) specifically encourage coagulation.

The exchange is interrupted by the entrance of Major Blake, looking for his wife, Eva. Clara fobs him off by saying that Eva is with mutual friends, the Baileys and he goes out. Hubert remains concerned that Louise is so sure that she wants to be with a man she has only just met. She replies in song – "We were dancing … When the world caught on fire"; emotion overcomes her and she faints in Karl's arms.
During these years, he earned an excellent reputation as a master brand builder, raising the profiles of brands like Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Ciroc, Baileys and many Coca-Cola brands. His most remarkable work was with Kingfisher Airlines, where he launched over 85 national and international sectors. His last assignment as an employee was with TMIC as a Head of Marketing and Film Tourism. The next chapter of life was entrepreneurship, that’s when he started All Around Globe.
In view of these difficulties, Farrell obtained Bailey bridges from British sources. In the end, all the major bridges beyond the Irrawaddy River would be Baileys. He also made the decision, controversial in Washington, to shift the terminus of the oil pipeline from Calcutta to Chittagong in order to avoid crossing the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers, and the dangers of concentrating too many vulnerable installations in the Calcutta area. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.
In downtown Granville Summit, at the intersection with Cowley Road, the road makes a gradual curve but maintains its southeastern progression. After the curve, PA 514 gains the name Granville Road but remains rural as it continues. The highway makes a curve to the northeast after Spencer Hill Road intersects, where it enters Granville Township. PA 514 then enters Granville Center, a small hamlet, which stretches until the intersection with Baileys Corners Road (State Route 3019 or SR 3019).

This was because two other baileys had to be taken and secured before a final assault on the inner castle could be launched. When the Sultan appeared before the fortress, he saw the walls hung with red cloth, as though for a festive reception, and a single great cannon thundered once to greet the mighty warrior monarch.Roworth (1840), p. 53. The siege began on 6 August when Suleiman ordered a general assault on the ramparts, which was repulsed.
Cusk has been a professor of creative writing at Kingston University,. Cusk's 2014 novel, Outline, was shortlisted for the Folio Prize, the Goldsmiths Prize and the Baileys prize. In 2003, Cusk was nominated by Granta magazine as one of 20 'Best of Young British Novelists'. After a long period of consideration, Cusk began working in a new form that represented personal experience while avoiding the politics of subjectivity and literalism and remaining free from narrative convention.
The Timothy P. Bailey House is a historic house at 210 Chandler Road in Andover, Massachusetts. It was built by Timothy Palmer Bailey, on land purchased from his father's estate. The Baileys were successful farmers, and the younger one, who was educated at Phillips Academy, built this locally rare example of an Italianate house in 1878. The 2.5 story L-shaped house features bracketed cornices, and a main entrance porch that is elaborately balustraded and also bracketed.
The ruins of St Clement's Chapel within the castle Little survives of what "must have been one of the most impressive castles in Yorkshire" other than parts of the curtain wall and excavated and tidied inner walls. It had inner and outer baileys. Parts of a 12th-century wall and the Piper Tower's postern gate and the foundations of a chapel are the oldest remains. The ruins of the Round Tower or keep are on the 11th-century mound.
In 1988 Techniquest re-opened in a pre-fabricated building opposite the now demolished Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum in Bute Street. The two buildings were removed to make way for Mermaid Quay. They moved again in 1995 about 100 metres along Stuart Street to its present location on the site of the former Baileys engineering workshop which is now its permanent headquarters. The building, the UK's first purpose-built science discovery centre, opened on 1 May 1995.
She was sent into training with Aidan O'Brien who had just begun his career at Ballydoyle. She was sired by Robellino, a son of Roberto, who won the Royal Lodge Stakes in 1980. At stud Robellino sired several good winners over a wide variety of distances including Mister Baileys, Royal Rebel and Rebelline (Tattersalls Gold Cup). Classic Park's dam Wanton showed good form as a two- year-old, winning one race and finishing third in the Flying Childers Stakes.
"Blueprint for Baileys Crossroads is Revived", Washington Post, July 8, 2010, p. B4. As a general neighborhood, however, with all facets of life included, the geographic extent of Bailey's Crossroads must be considered to be larger. It abuts the clearly established Lake Barcroft neighborhood on the southwest, with Blair Road, Beachway Drive, Nevius Street and Mansfield Road marking its western proximity. North of Leesburg Pike its extent is generally defined by Glen Carlyn and Carlin Springs roads.
Chepstow Castle, seen from the north bank of the River Wye Chepstow Castle is situated on a narrow ridge between the limestone river cliff and a valley, known locally as the Dell, on its landward side. Its full extent is best appreciated from the opposite bank of the River Wye. The castle has four baileys, added in turn through its history. Despite this, it is not a defensively strong castle, having neither a strong keep nor a concentric layout.
Ruins of the bergfried The castle consists of an inner and outer baileys. The inner ward includes the remains of the defensive bergfried, the enceinte and two residential buildings. The older east building dates to the 14th century; excavations in 1990-93 uncovered its cellar. The ruin on the west side of the inner bailey that can be seen from far away is what remains of the east end of the palas and the adjacent rectangular powder tower.
The vessel was named after a firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty. According to Barbara La Rocca, author of Going Coast New York City, the Kevin C. Kane was the busiest fireboat in the World. In 2017 her second owner sold her, after not making a real effort to repurpose her, to Mike Cole, owner of Iron Works Construction in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin. Cole is adapting the vessel to serve as a tugboat.
Other types of castle in Cheshire are ringworks and fortified manor houses. Ringworks are similar to motte-and-bailey castles but lack the motte;Friar (2003), p. 246. although contemporary with motte-and-baileys, they are an uncommon form of fortification. A ringwork may have been built rather than a motte-and-bailey because the soil was too thin to provide a proper motte or simply because of the preference of the builder.Grimsditch, Nevell, and Redhead (2007), p. 10.
At the time it was intended that "the yard would continue to be supplied with naval repair work, which would diminish as commercial activities expanded."A. Cecil Hampshire 1975, 173. Supervision of residual naval work in the dockyard would be carried out by personnel under the direction of the Flag Officer Malta. After Baileys were dispossessed by the Maltese Government, by February 1968, the dockyard was closed as a naval base and the Royal Navy withdrew completely in 1979.
These high mountains are a popular area for climbing, usually accessed from the north through the town of Niğde. The town of Aladağ sits on their southern side, accessed by road up from Adana. Approximately 9 kilometers from the settlement of Karsantı / Aladağ is Meydan Kalesi, an impressive castle and chapel constructed during the period of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. This fortresses has three baileys, an array of rounded towers, and a ceremonial hall whose decorations included carved capitals.
After VT 44, VT 106 bends northwest again, crossing through dense woods through the town of Reading, reaching the village of Hammondsville, which consists of a few homes at a junction with Baileys Mills Road. VT 106 winds northward out of Hammondsville and passes through multiple woods on its way climbing through some hills. Soon gaining the moniker of South Road, the route reaches the town of Woodstock. VT 106 turns northeast through Woodstock, entering the rural sections of Windsor County.
Nola Millar was a long time colleague of Baileys, they were both part of Unity Theatre. In 1964 along with Anne Flannery they started the New Theatre School of Drama where Bailey taught movement. Following on from that was the birth of national drama training in New Zealand in 1970 when Nola Millar along with Bailey and others started the New Zealand Drama School, Bailey was one of the core tutors. Bailey continued teaching at the New Zealand Drama School until 1988.
This is a significant archaeological site and one of the most interesting of its type in the county. It was the site of a Norman motte and bailey castle that from Domesday to the 13th century was the stronghold of the Trailly family. It is an imposing feature with a central conical mound rising to about 40 feet above the bottom of its north moat. It is in 2 levels with 2 extensive baileys and is not surrounded by a moat.
It then bought Express Dairies in 1969,Competition Commission Report 1990 the Berni Inn chain, and the Mecca bingo halls in 1970. Next came its move into brewing, when in 1972 it bought Truman, Hanbury & Buxton and Watney Mann. The latter's subsidiary International Distillers & Vintners owned the J&B; whisky, Baileys Irish Cream, Gilbey's gin, Piat wine and Croft sherry and port brands, as well as the European and Commonwealth rights to Smirnoff vodka. It changed its name to Grand Metropolitan in 1973.
During these years, the Baileys produced educational films on topics such as the history of behaviorism. Their film work included The History of Behavioral Analysis Biographies, the ABE documentary Patient Like the Chipmunks, and An Apple for the Student: How Behavioral Psychology Can Change the American Classroom. Earthworks of the former castle in Burton Burton in Lonsdale Castle was in the village of Burton in Lonsdale in North Yorkshire, England (). The Pipe Rolls for the reign of Henry II record that the castle's garrison in 1129-1130 consisted of a knight, ten sergeants, a gatekeeper, and a watchman.Mentioned in This was a motte castle with two baileys. In 1322 it was confiscated from the Mowbrays who had been in opposition to King Edward II. The mound is still visible.
The newer style castles functioned as home to the daimyōs, his family, and his most loyal retainers. Because of the expense of building such a lavish structure, castles in the style of Azuchi, functioned also to highlight the power and prestige of the daimyōs. These new castles were built of wood and plaster on a stone foundation. Generally the main keep or tenshu was positioned at the highest point, surrounded by a series of interlocking baileys with walls, small towers and pathways.
First, a coffee liqueur, such as Tia Maria or Kahlúa, is poured into the glass. Next, Baileys Irish Cream is poured very slowly over the back of a cold bar spoon, taking care to avoid disturbing the lower layer as the second liquor is poured on top. Just as carefully, Grand Marnier is poured atop the Irish Cream using the bar spoon. The drink is sometimes made with a shaker and served in a cocktail glass, although this is less traditional.
The Plum Island front range light was originally identical to the front range light of the Baileys Harbor Range Lights, but was replaced by a modern skeletal light in 1964. The rear range light is the original tower and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, as the Plum Island Range Rear Light, reference number #84003659. The front light is directional, aligned on 330.5° true. The rear light is omnidirectional and still has its original 4th order Fresnel lens.
McInerney graduated at University College Cork and Yonsei University. Before getting a foothold in becoming a writer, her mission from early on, she started 2006 the blog Arse End of Ireland which acquired renown for word power. Her debut novel, The Glorious Heresies, was published in April 2015 and won the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction and the Desmond Elliott Prize in 2016. It sold licences for being translated to Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Italy.
That same year, he visited the castle and granted town privileges to the adjacent town of Mylau. Charles IV, whose relief in porphyry can be seen above the main entrance gate, instated a royal Bohemian office and began the expansion of the structure, which was continued by his sons Wenceslaus IV and Sigismund. Part of the castle was destroyed in 1400 due to a feud between Wenceslaus IV and the Vögte of the Vogtland. During the renovations, two large outer baileys were erected.
Shimabara Castle is a , located between Ariake Bay and Mount Unzen. The outer moats, some 15 meters deep and between 30–50 meters wide, extended 360 meters east-west and 1260 meters north-south, with the enclosed area divided into three baileys. The walls extended for 3900 meters and had 16 yagura of various sizes at key points. The main donjon had five stories, and a height of 33 meters, and was connected to two secondary keeps, each with three stories.
King's Theatre went into the winter of 1993-4 as a leading Derby candidate. On his 1994 debut, however, he proved himself to be a serious contender for the 2000 Guineas by taking a narrow victory in the Craven Stakes. Sent off as 9-2 favourite for the Guineas, he led early but faded into 13th place behind Mister Baileys. A well-beaten fourth place behind Erhaab in the Dante Stakes followed, and his price for the Derby drifted out to 14–1.
Alnwick Castle was commanded by a shell keep, to which extra towers had been added, as well as to the curtain wall, with a solid barbican and gatehouse. Bamburgh Castle was on a high spur ridge with three baileys, a large keep, and fortified gateways. Dunstanburgh Castle stood on a dolerite spur which had the sheer drop of a cliff on one side. Montagu besieged Bamburgh, the most important of these northern bulwarks, due to its distance from London and proximity to Scotland.
To the north-east of the village, south of Castle Dykes Farm, is evidence of a univallate hillfort and the buried remains of a Bronze Age barrow. This is a recorded national monument. To the north of Castle Dykes Farm is Castle Dykes, a Norman motte castle with three baileys. In 1712, workmen digging on the site of the castle found a "room with a vaulted stone roof, and another room beneath and rudely carved stones with human figures on them".
The castle baileys contained residential buildings, and some foundations have survived. In 1789, historian Ely Hargrove wrote that the castle contained "only three rooms on a floor, and measures, in front, only fifty-four feet." The upper storey of the Courthouse features a museum that includes furniture from the original Tudor Court, as well as exhibits about the castle and the town. Some of the surviving areas of the castle keep wall also bear impact scars left by bullets fired during the Civil War siege.
He competed in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1908 London Olympics, at the age of 25, and came in fourth. He then traveled the world, ending up in America with Barnum & Baileys Greatest Show on Earth, where he performed as an unarmed contender fighting opponents even armed with knives. Josefsson became a wealthy man from his circus activities and returned to Iceland unscathed in 1927. After his return, he invested more than 1 million Krona in the Hotel Borg, for many years Iceland's classiest hotel.
The Stella Prize is an Australian annual literary award established in 2013 for writing by Australian women in all genres, worth $50,000. A furlong out King's Theatre moved past Mister Baileys and into the lead. Erhaab was switched to the outside by Carson and produced a strong, sustained run, ("like a dart from a blowpipe") catching King's Theatre inside the last furlong and moving ahead to win by one and a quarter lengths. At 51 years old, Willie Carson was the third oldest jockey to win the Derby. Erhaab's next race was the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in which he faced older horses for the first time.
After Tokugawa Ieyasu took control over the Kantō region in 1590, he assigned Hiraiwa Chikayoshi , one of his most trusted generals, as castellan. However, in 1601, Sakai Shigetada was installed as daimyō of Maebashi, initially with a kokudaka of 33,000 koku. The Sakai clan ruled over the next seven generations, completely rebuilding Maebashi Castle on higher ground with multiple baileys and a three-story tenshu. During the Sakai tenure, the revenues of the domain increased to 150,000 koku, prior to their transfer in 1749 to Himeji Domain.
The novel won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in May 2015, beating novels including The Girl with All the Gifts and Memory of Water. The committee highlighted the novel's focus on the survival of human culture after an apocalypse, as opposed to the survival of humanity itself. The novel was also a finalist for the National Book Award, ultimately losing to Phil Klay's short story cycle Redeployment. It was also a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, as well as the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction.
The mound is small and there is no attached bailey, Rise Hall being about 50m to the north, in an oval enclosure partly defined by ponds. Mottes slightly separate from baileys do occasionally occur but make no sense as defensive features. A pair of 6th-century cruciform brooches were found ante 1911 at Akenham Hall, which possibly indicates an inhumation site. There are a few small businesses operating out of former agricultural buildings, including Stealth Electronics, which specialises in security equipment, based at Akenham Hall Farm.
In 2006, it was proclaimed one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan. The ferroconcrete structure has three roofs and five interior floors, and contains exhibits of artifacts from the original castle, Japanese swords, armor and dioramas illustrating local history. The Main Gate of the castle was reconstructed in 1993, and the east corner yagura in 2010. In 2007, construction work near the castle revealed stonework from the castle’s outer baileys, lending evidence to the claim that Okazaki Castle was once the fourth largest in Japan.
Castle Bosselstein Up above the small church, on a knoll (Bossel) stands Castle Bosselstein, or rather what is left of it. The whole complex was forsaken in 1600, and all that stands now is a tower stump and remnants of the castle wall. In the Middle Ages, it was a stronghold to be reckoned with, with its two crescent moats and its two baileys. Somewhat farther up, not far from Castle Bosselstein, the third castle arose about 1325, the one now known as Schloss Oberstein.
The prize was established to recognise the literary achievement of female writers. The inspiration for the Baileys Prize was the Booker Prize of 1991, when none of the six shortlisted books was by a woman, despite some 60% of novels published that year being by female authors. A group of women and men working in the industry – authors, publishers, agents, booksellers, librarians, journalists – therefore met to discuss the issue. Research showed that women’s literary achievements were often not acknowledged by the major literary prizes.
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) 1400 Class, commonly known as Bill Baileys after the popular little music hall number "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey", was a class of 30 4-cylinder 4-6-0 compound locomotives. Essentially a Class B compound 0-8-0 with different wheel arrangement. 30 were built starting in 1903, intended for a mixed traffic role. The first was withdrawn in 1913, with several more following during the First World War, cannibalised to keep Class Bs running.
Barley Pound Barley Pound is a large ring-motte with four baileys and is one of the best examples of a ring and bailey fortress in Hampshire. The fortification may be the "Lidelea Castle" which was mentioned in the Gesta Stephani for 1147, when it was besieged and captured by King Stephen. After its return to Henry of Blois, Bishop of Wincheter it was abandoned in favour of Farnham Castle. Archaeological work has uncovered evidence of an 8-inch thick wall along with a masonry keep.
Builth Castle was erected in 1277, the first castle to be built by King Edward I in Wales. The site chosen was a pre-existing motte-and-bailey castle with a motte surrounded by two baileys, all surrounded by a further boundary wall. This older castle had already changed hands several times as the Normans and Welsh fought for supremacy in these parts, and the small town of Builth had sprung up nearby. In 1260 the old castle was taken and largely destroyed by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.
Beneath the land of the Davidsons and Baileys lay the largest and richest deposit of bituminous coal in the world. The first seam was discovered in nearby Pocahontas, Virginia in the backyard of Jordan Nelson. President Frederick Kimball of the Norfolk and Western Railway described this as the "most spectacular find on the continent and indeed perhaps of the entire planet." The coal seam had been mentioned much earlier in Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia, but it was not mined until 1890.
The "Irish" in the name refers to the drink's Irish ingredients; typically Guinness stout, Baileys Irish Cream, and Jameson Irish Whiskey. The term "car bomb" combines reference to its "bomb shot" style as well as the noted car bombings of Ireland's Troubles. The name is considered offensive by many Irish people, with some bartenders refusing to serve it. The inclusion of the drink in an English bar's 2014 promotional material drew complaints, followed by withdrawal of the promotion and a public apology by the bar manager.
In 2004 he won the 1,000 Guineas with Attraction. Other successful horses he has trained are Mister Baileys, winner of the 2,000 Guineas, Shamardal, 2004 European Champion Two-Year-Old, and Double Trigger, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup. Johnston's horses are known for their front running style and bravery in a finish, two attributes that were best advertised by the exploits of Attraction. He cites Shamardal as the best horse he ever trained, and Attraction as the one he is most proud of.

This mill was the Virginia and Rainy Lake Lumber Company and was a totally different enterprise and had no relationship to the Baileys. Production of this mill was approximately one million board feet of white pine lumber per day. There is a statue dedicated to the logging, lumbering, and mining industries on the shore of Silver Lake. Bailey's old residence still stands today at 816 5th Avenue South, across the street from the old Coates residence (Coates who owned the Coates Hotel in Virginia).
From the late 1950s to the 1980s Hilliard wrote many of the group's 150-plus charts. He also worked with Chicago’s top arrangers to expand the library. In 1959, the group recorded a single album on the Argo label called The Legend of Bix,a tribute to 1920s cornetist and composer Bix Beiderbecke. On the recording was Tom Hilliard - tenor sax, Ed Haley - trumpet, Ed Avis - valve trombone, Dave Edwards (musician) - alto sax, Ben Baileys - baritone sax, Angelo Principali - piano, Gerry Lofstrum - bass, Jim Gianas - drums.
Caring Comes First: The Leprosy Mission story, Cyril Davey, Marshall Pickering, 1987, p35 At this stage, Wellesley was still trying to combine his work for the Church of Scotland Mission with his unpaid work as secretary for the Mission to Lepers. Alice's health again became fragile. In 1882, the Scottish Mission board ordered them home and took Wellesley off their missionary lists. Later that year the Baileys moved to Edinburgh where Wellesley took up position as secretary of a charity that worked with women in India.
Robert Wilson, who was associated with the Winter Hill Gang, was tried for DeSalvo's murder, but the trial ended in a hung jury. Bailey later claimed that DeSalvo was killed for selling amphetamines in the prison for less than the inmate-enforced syndicate price. DeSalvo's papers are housed in the Lloyd Sealy Library Special Collections at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. His papers include his correspondence, mainly with the members of the Bailey family, and gifts sent to the Baileys of jewelry and leatherwork crafted by DeSalvo while in prison.
The most important and prestigious buildings, such as the great hall and the keep or bergfried, were usually located in the inner bailey of the castle, sometimes called the central bailey or main bailey. Nonetheless, there are a few castles where the keep is outside the inner bailey, such as Château de Dourdan and Flint Castle. The lower or outer bailey often held less important structures, such as stables, if there was not enough space in the inner bailey. Outer baileys could also be largely defensive in function, without significant buildings.
Savranda was built to guard the southern end of the Amanus Pass (or Syrian Gates). The fortress has two separate baileys that are heavily fortified with towers and sturdy curtain walls along the eastern and southern flanks, and protected at the north and west by steep rocky cliffs. Although there were brief periods of Byzantine occupation, the castle is primarily an Armenian construction which was commissioned by its Frankish lords. The first detailed historical and archaeological evaluation, including a surveyed plan of the entire complex, was completed in 1979 by R. W. Edwards.
In 2001, Les Brown Jr., born 1940, became the full-time leader of the Band of Renown. It continues to perform throughout the world and have a regular big band show in Branson, Missouri. Brown Jr. also hosts a national radio show on the Music of Your Life network. Brown Jr. was a television actor in the 1960s (Gunsmoke, General Hospital, The Baileys of Balboa, Gilligan's Island), a rock musician and producer who worked with Carlos Santana, and a concert promoter for many country music artists including Merle Haggard and Loretta Lynn.
Indeed, on most Stanley irons the functional surface is laminated with hard, wear resistant steel in the first inch or so and mild steel in the remainder of the iron. Modern irons from other makers are much thicker and are 100 percent tool steel, hardened to about Rockwell 62. Since the cheaper Baileys were kept in production along with the Bedrocks, to make the distinction easier, square designs were modelled in the body of the bedrock planes. Long discontinued, Bedrocks are still sought after by both tool collectors and woodworkers.
The castle was a flatland-style castle with a roughly square layout consisting of an inner bailey measuring roughly 120 meters east–west x 147 meters north-south, surrounded by an outer bailey measuring roughly 480 meters east–west and 440 meters north–south. Both baileys were protected by moats and by earthen ramparts. The north–south moats utilize natural streams, and are connected by east–west artificial channels. The ruins of the castle have now become paddy fields, and only a slight trace of the remains are visible.
Original Dan Bailey's Fly Shop storefront, 1939 Dan Bailey's Fly Shop, Livingston, MT (2008) The original fly shop was established in the old Albermarle Hotel at 103 W Park Street along with a small shooting gallery. The Baileys lived in a back room and the rent was $25 a month. Because there was limited opportunity for local fly business, Dan Bailey's became primarily a mail order fly shop and outfitter for visiting anglers. Dan Bailey produced his first mail order catalog in 1941—standard dry flies were $2.50 per dozen.
In May 2020, Ed and Michael begin to suffer racism from the Bistro's new manager, Don. Michael wants to react to the comments made by Don, however Ed insists that they have to pick and choose what arguments to involve themselves in and if they react, then they won't get paid. Aggie stands by Ed, recongising the generational gap between them and their children in terms of experiences of racism. The Baileys soon reluctantly decide to attend the relaunch of the Bistro, where Don continues to make comments at the Bailey family.

After Philip II took Chateau Gaillard, he repaired the collapsed tower of the outer bailey that had been used to gain access to the castle. The archaeological investigation examined the tower generally thought to be the one collapsed by Philip, and although it did not recover any dating evidence, the consensus is that he completely rebuilt the tower. In conjunction with the archaeological work, efforts were made to preserve the remaining structures. Today, Château Gaillard's inner bailey is open to the public from March to November, while the outer baileys are open all year round.
A plan of Château Gaillard by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, with north pointing to the bottom-left hand corner. The inner- bailey and keep is at the bottom of the plan and the outer-bailey is at the top. But there is at least one mistake, the tower supposed to contain the latrins on the right of the keep, was not round but square. Château Gaillard consists of three baileys—an inner, a middle, and an outer with the main entrance to the castle—and a keep, also called a donjon, in the inner-bailey.
Irish cream (An Roinn Talmhaíochta, Bia agus Mara - Tuarascáil Bhliantúil 2016) is a cream liqueur based on Irish whiskey, cream and other flavourings. It typically has an ABV (alcohol by volume) level of 15 to 20% and is served on its own or in mixed drinks, most commonly Irish coffee. Its largest markets are the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. It is not a traditional Irish product, as the first version of it, Baileys, was invented by a creative agency working for International Distillers & Vintners's Dublin office in 1973.
In Coulter's first 8 races in the series, he won 4 races ultimately finishing 4th in the final points standings. Coulter started racing stock cars in 2007 entering the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. He didn't qualify for his first race at USA International Speedway but was permitted to race anyway and finished with a top 20. Coulter started gaining attention in 2007 and 2008 by finishing in the top-ten multiple times throughout the Carolinas and Virginia, including top-tens at the 2007 Thanksgiving Classic at Kenly and the Baileys 300 at Martinsville Speedway.
Puretone released "Stuck in a Groove", once again featuring Daemion on vocals, which peaked at No. 26. in the UK. Both tracks were taken from Puretone's studio album, Stuck in a Groove. In 2003, Abrahams wrote and produced the original music score for the movie One Last Ride, produced by Academy Award- winning director Ang Lee. He began composing music for television commercials, such as the 'Go for It Girl' campaign for Portmans clothing, a song entitled "Melt with You" for Baileys Irish Cream and the LG technology campaign.

Now the organisation has launched a series of Royalty Free collections in which all images are model-released and available for multiple usages, including advertising, for a single fee.
He made progress in the straight, but was beaten a "short neck" by the locally trained Green Tune. A week after his defeat in France, the colt was sent to Ireland for the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh and started 5/4 favourite against eight opponents. Racing on heavy ground, Turtle Island took the lead inside the last quarter mile and drew away from the field to win by fifteen lengths from Guided Tour. Grand Lodge, who had been beaten a short head by Mister Baileys in the 2000 Guineas, finished fourth.
A number of woods also existed, Sherbourne's Brake, Webb's Wood and the large Savage's Wood have all been preserved. Fiddlers Wood, the name of which lives on in Fiddlers Wood Lane was all but obliterated by the M4 motorway. Baileys Court Farmhouse is the only original building that still remains and was used as offices by the towns developers before becoming the Bailey's Court Inn. Watch Elm Farm was named after the Watch Elm, an elm of a legendary size that blew down in the mid 18th century.
She was sired by Robellino, a son of Roberto who won the Royal Lodge Stakes and sired several other good winners including Mister Baileys and Royal Rebel. Rebelline's dam Fleeting Rainbow showed little racing ability, failing to win in three races, but did better a broodmare, producing several other winners including the Blandford Stakes winner Quws. She was descended from the British broodmare Pelting (foaled 1958) who was the ancestor of several other major winners including Moon Ballad, Bassenthwaite, Braashee (Prix Royal-Oak) and Central Park (Italian Derby).

The others are Bolingbroke in Lincolnshire, and Chartley, Staffordshire, both of which share similar architectural features with Beeston; in particular the design of the towers. Ruins of Bolingbroke Castle Ruins of Chartley Castle Buck Brothers, showing Beeston Castle from the south Unlike many other castles of the period, Beeston does not have a keep as its last line of defence. Instead the natural features of the land together with massive walls, strong gatehouses, and carefully positioned towers made the baileys themselves the stronghold. The defences consisted of two parts.

Wellesley Bailey was born in Ireland in 1846.An Inn Called Welcome, A D Miller, The Mission to Lepers, 1965, p9 He grew up in Abbeyleix, Queens County where his father was an estate manager for the Cosby family. The Baileys earned enough to send Wellesley and his three brothers to boarding school at Kilkenny College.Caring Comes First: The Leprosy Mission story, Cyril Davey, Marshall Pickering, 1987, p19 Ireland in the 1840s and '50s was a tough environment to grow up in – the country was immersed in the Great Famine.
Most of these castles were motte-and-baileys and were originally of turf and timber construction, although they were sometimes later replaced by stone structures if a long-term castle was needed. Away from the borders, baronial castles were built in Cheshire and were a status symbol.Husain (1973), p. 101 The castles in Cheshire were built over a period of several centuries, with the earliest in 1070 and the latest in the 15th century. Most, 12 out of 20, were built between 1070 and the end of the 12th century.
World War II brought on serious paper-rationing with smaller newspapers were powerless to work around. While larger LA-area papers were able to purchase Canadian pulp mills to keep in paper, smaller papers were forced to print fewer pages less frequently. The Baileys were particularly frustrated because during those boom years, the advertising available was much more than they had paper to print upon. To supplement income, Bailey took a job reorganizing and running the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation's Lockheed Star, printing five separate editions for the five separate factories in the Burbank area.
Atholl brose Atholl Brose (or Athol Brose, Athole Brose) is a Scottish drink obtained by mixing oatmeal brose, honey, whisky, and sometimes cream (particularly on festive occasions). When made with cream, the drink is similar to Baileys Irish Cream. Atholl Brose has also become an alternative name for the dessert Cranachan, which uses similar ingredients. According to legend the drink is named after the 1st Earl of Atholl (of the 8th creation), who suppressed a Highland rebellion in 1475 by spiking the rebel leader's well with Atholl Brose, leading to an inebriated enemy and the rebel leader's capture.
Some recent sources have suggested that both theories could be correct: that the castle is a 12th- century motte built upon a Saxon burh. The castle was razed to the ground during the English Civil War. Today the only ruins that remain are certain earthworks, atop a mound that has been named as Castle Hill. The motte, which at one time may have been further fortified with a timber palisade, and its two baileys are visible, but none of the buildings remain except some foundation walls, which are now covered with vegetation; otherwise, only the earthworks remain.

Pieštvė fortress was first mentioned in the chronicle of Peter of Dusburg on 25 July 1293 when the Teutonic Order organized an attack on Pieštvė and nearby Junigeda (Veliuona). At the time, the Teutons burned the outer bailey but did not manage to take the inner fortification. The following year, three Teutonic brothers raided near the fortress, took an entire herd of cattle and 70 people as slaves back to Prussia. The Teutons attacked both Pieštvė and Junigeda and managed to burn their outer baileys in 1298 (commanded by Kunon, komtur of Brandenburg) and fall 1318 (commanded by Marshal Heinrich von Plötzke).
A hanging scroll painting of Himeji Castle, giving some indication of the overall layout of the castle, and the complex arrangement of walls and paths that would present a considerable obstacle to an invading army. The primary method of defense lay in the arrangement of the baileys, called maru (丸) or . Maru, meaning 'round' or 'circle' in most contexts, here refers to sections of the castle, separated by courtyards. Some castles were arranged in concentric circles, each maru lying within the last, while others lay their maru in a row; most used some combination of these two layouts.
Howlett and Bailey Architects was founded by Jeffrey Howlett and Donald Bailey in 1960, in Perth, Western Australia. They received numerous design awards and commendations from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and won the competition for the Reserve Bank of Australia Building in Canberra in 1962. Their designs combined Modern style and Classical rationale, which resulted in ordered and axial aspects. Howlett and Baileys Architects’s major projects included the Public Suite, the Beatty Park Pool kiosk and Manager’s house (now demolished), and the two Australian landmarks the Council House (1962) and the Perth Concert Hall (1973).
In the Germanic castles of the Holy Roman Empire, there is a distinction between a Vorburg and a Kernburg roughly corresponding to lower and upper baileys in English castles. In German-speaking countries, many castles had double curtain walls with a narrow enclosure outside the main walls, acting as a killing ground between them, referred to as a zwinger. The outermost wall was a Zwingermauer or type of low mantlet wall. These were often added at vulnerable points like the gate of a castle or town, but were rarely as fully developed as in the concentric castles in Wales or the Crusader castles.
Mileham Castle Moat Mileham Castle (also referred to as " Hall Yards" on old maps) is one of the largest motte and bailey castles in Norfolk. It straddles the pre-Conquest road that remained the main east- west route through the county until the 17th century. The castle was constructed in about 1100.and its remains form a surprisingly imposing monument consisting of a motte built up around the fragments of a stone keep, two baileys and a further banked rectangular enclosure to the north of the road, which now contains Burwood Hall (built in 1793) and farm buildings.
George Bailey and Mary Hatch, danced near the opening in the floor in the Beverly Hills High School gym 320 Sycamore is the fictional street address in Bedford Falls of the Bailey family. It is situated down Sycamore Street to the southeast of the town. Before the Baileys bought the house, it was owned by a family named Granville, who left the house derelict vacant and it became a ghost house. The local teenagers made a game of throwing rocks at the Old Granville House, and if you smashed a window you could make a wish.
Mihara Castle was built 1567 by Kobayakawa Takakage, the third son of the famous warlord Mōri Motonari who controlled most of Aki and Bingo Provinces. It was a large scale castle with 3 baileys, 32 sumi yagura (corner towers), and 14 mon (gates). It was built on the coast and connected two islands giving rise to the nickname Ukishirō or "floating castle." Kobayakawa Takakage moved from Niitakayama Castle (新高山城), a typical mountaintop castle, to this site to better manage the Mōri clan's naval forces and to help protect from Oda Nobunaga who was advancing from the east.
Erhaab quickened well, proving too good for Weigh Anchor, but failed by a neck to catch the leader Cicerao. Erhaab then produced his best performance in his most important race to date. He was sent to York for the Dante Stakes an important Derby trial, where he was faced by a field that included the 2,000 Guineas winner, Mister Baileys as well as King's Theatre and Weigh Anchor. Carson made his challenge on Erhaab two furlongs out, and the colt quickened well to take the lead and then pulled clear to win in "impressive" style by three and a half lengths.

During this campaign, they built great mounds of earth topped by wooden towers, referred to as mottes, as defensive structures. The Harryville (Ulster-Scots: Herrieville) area's motte-and-bailey is one of the best examples of this type of fortification in Northern Ireland. Some sources, however, credit the Uí Fhloinn with building the mid-Antrim mottes and baileys in imitation of the invaders; the Uí Fhloinn defeated and repelled the Earl of Ulster, John de Courcy, in 1177 and 1178. In 1315, Edward Bruce (brother of King Robert I of Scotland, known as "Robert the Bruce") invaded Ireland.
North of the outer bailey is the middle bailey which is an irregular polygon; like the outer bailey, the wall of the middle bailey is studded with towers. The towers allowed the garrison to provide enfilading fire. In the fashion of the time, most of the towers in the curtain walls of the middle and outer baileys were cylindrical. Château Gaillard was one of the first castles in Europe to use machicolations—stone projections on top of a wall with openings that allowed objects to be dropped on an enemy at the base of the wall.
However, these attempts were met by massacres by the ruthless Subutai, which stalled any guerrilla attempts in their tracks.McLynn, 476. A portion of the civilian population fled to areas of refuge difficult for Mongol cavalry to access: high mountains in the north and east, swamps (especially on the Puszta, around Székesfehérvár and in the west, the Hanság), and older earthwork fortresses (most of which were motte-and-baileys or consisted of a mud-banked enclosure on the top of a mountain, steep natural hill, or man-made hill). Rogerius recounts his experience in one such refuge called Fátra in his Carmen Miserabile.
The Maiden Creek watershed covers approximately with more than of perennial streams, including Maiden/Ontelaunee Creek and ten named tributaries (Kistler Creek, Stony Run, Pine Creek, Furnace Creek, Mill Creek, Sacony Creek, Peters Creek, Baileys Creek, Willow Creek, Moselem Springs). The watershed is in the southeast portion of Pennsylvania, lying within the upper Schuylkill River Basin in northeastern Berks County and extreme western Lehigh County. Small portions of eastern Schuylkill County lie within the watershed at the ridgeline of Blue Mountain and in State Gamelands. Nineteen townships and five boroughs, or parts thereof, lie within the watershed.
If forced to assault a castle, there were many options available to the attackers. For wooden structures, such as early motte-and-baileys, fire was a real threat and attempts would be made to set them alight as can be seen in the Bayeux Tapestry. Projectile weapons had been used since antiquity and the mangonel and petraria – from Eastern and Roman origins respectively – were the main two that were used into the Middle Ages. The trebuchet, which probably evolved from the petraria in the 13th century, was the most effective siege weapon before the development of cannons.
In early 1957 psychologist Walter Bailey and his wife Mary commissioned Pierre Koenig to design a 1,200-1,300 square foot house upon a level site nestled within a Hollywood Hills canyon. The Baileys were later described in Arts & Architecture magazine as a “contemporary-minded” couple with no children and an informal lifestyle. This represented the ideal program for Koenig to realize steel framings potential to achieve a truly open plan design that capitalized upon the vast spans that steel facilitated. By May 1958 Koenig had completed his construction drawings and begun collaboration with factories that were capable of producing the prefabricated steel bents.

Mister Baileys (1991–2009) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from June 1993 to July 1994 he ran nine times and won four races. After winning the Vintage Stakes and the Royal Lodge Stakes as a two- year-old, he became the first Northern-trained Classic winner for seventeen years when he won the 2000 Guineas in record time on his three-year-old debut. After three further races he was retired to stud, but failed to make an impression as a sire of winners after his health was badly affected by an attack of grass sickness.
Weaver sent the colt into the lead from the start and he went several lengths clear of the field at the turn into the straight. A furlong from the finish he was headed by King's Theatre and he weakened in the closing stages to finish fourth behind Erhaab, beaten just under eight lengths. His performance was praised, with many feeling that his effort over a distance which was clearly beyond his natural range was more creditable than his win at Newmarket. In July Mister Baileys returned to one mile for the Group One Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and started 7/4 favourite.
The walls, as well as the numerous horseshoe-shaped towers and vaulted chambers, are built with beautifully cut rusticated masonry and are carefully adapted to the coiling outcrop of limestone to create three baileys. The archaeological and historical assessment of this castle published in 1987 (with a scaled plan) describes each unit in detail. In the upper bailey is an Armenian chapel with its apse and north wall preserved. The assumption that the relief of a seated king with two rampant lions in the gatehouse door depicts King Levon I (confirming the conclusion that he was the castle's early 13th-c.
Piccolo had a busy schedule as a three-year-old in 1994, contesting eleven races in six months. He began his campaign in the European Free Handicap at Newmarket in April and finished seventh behind Bluegrass Prince. He was then stepped up to the highest level for the classic 2000 Guineas at the same course two weeks later. He started a 100/1 outsider and finished twentieth of the twenty-three runners behind Mister Baileys. He was then sent to Germany for the Mehl- Mülhens-Rennen over 1600 metres at Cologne on 15 May and finished second to the locally trained Royal Abjar.
In 1929, the Baileys gave $125,000 ($1.6 million in 2011 dollars) for the construction of The Bailey Fountain in Brooklyn's Park Slope Grand Army Plaza, selected on a design competition. His autobiography, It Can’t Happen Here Again: The Life Story of a Self-Made Man, was published in 1945 by Alfred A. Knopf (ASIN B0007E41VS). In honor of his humane philosophy of life and nature, his great granddaughter and great great granddaughter have established an equestrian breeding and showing farm, and named it Muny Sunk Stables, Inc. (There is only one "Munnysunk", says his great granddaughter, Christine Vanneck).
There was no corporate sponsor for 2013; sponsorship was by "private benefactors", led by Cherie Blair and writers Joanna Trollope and Elizabeth Buchan. Beginning in 2014, the prize was sponsored by the liquor brand Baileys Irish Cream, owned by the drinks conglomerate Diageo. In January 2017, Diageo announced that it had "regretfully decided to make way for a new sponsor"; the 2017 prize to be announced in June, will be the last it supports. In June 2017, the prize announced it would change its name to simply "Women's Prize for Fiction" starting in 2018, and will be supported by a family of sponsors.
In 1451, when the Earl of Devon besieged the castle which was held by Lord Bonville, it was arranged around two baileys. The gate-house of the inner ward was probably of Edward I's date (1239–1307), but it was changed by Bishop Walter Langton in 1496. He inserted a large two- lighted Tudor window and placed a tablet bearing his own arms, supported by angels, above it and the Royal Coat of King Henry VII below. The Great Hall, which stands just opposite the gateway, is by , with walls apparently, in part, Norman, but much changed by later generations.
Substantial dating evidence has not been recovered from the site, but the form of the castle as a timber motte-and-bailey would date it to between the Norman Conquest and the 13th century.Redhead (1997), p. 35. The lack of documentary evidence relating to the castle may be attributed to the short term nature of the timber construction; motte-and-baileys were quick to establish and would not necessarily have been used for long periods. A coin found on the site dating to the reign of Henry II, 1154 to 1189, may indicate that the castle was built during this period.

Lydia Cotton Mill, also owned by the Baileys and their descendants, followed in 1902. In 1933 there is a documented case of the lynching of an African American 35-year-old Norris Bendy in Clinton after he was arrested for hitting a white man. The mills continued to be a vital source of prosperity for Clinton until their closure in 2001 brought years of economic hardship from which the area is still struggling to emerge. The Clinton Commercial Historic District, Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church, and Thornwell-Presbyterian College Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Anthony Emery argues that the term "keep" is inappropriate for the building, which should be seen more as a residential tower house, similar to that at Langley Castle. The inner and outer bailey walls have also been damaged by sea erosion, but they originally formed concentric squares around the keep and were protected by ditches. The outer bailey wall, thick in places, is no longer very substantial, but even when first built it may have been quite weak; it is protected by a moat, up to wide and deep.; ; Both the baileys are protected by towers; the outer bailey towers are each wide.

Castle mound at Laxton, Nottinghamshire. The mound is the site of an 11th- century castle which consisted of motte with inner and outer baileys. Laxton Castle is a late 11th- or early 12th-century medieval castle located north of the village of Laxton in Nottinghamshire, England. According to an early 20th- century report by the British Archaeological Association, the site is notable not only as "the most striking specimen of a mount and court stronghold" in the area, but also for "the nearly perfect condition of its two courts", which made of it a valuable resource for study.

Ne Castle consists of five motte-and-bailey enclosures on a roughly L-shaped river terrace on the south bank of the Mabechi River, approximately 500 meters long by 300 meters wide. As was typical for the time, the fortifications consisted primarily of wooden palisades and earthen ramparts, guarded by 20-meter wide dry moats. The area was divided into several enclosures, or baileys, with varying elevations. There was no donjon in the central bailey, which was occupied large building, possibly in the Shōin style, based on evidence of foundation posts, as the residence of the ruling Nanbu clan.
The castle was largely reconstructed in 1994, with some emphasis on the inner citadel Japan Castle On the current site there are two gates, one for the lord and guests, the other a simpler gate for servants and workers. There are many reconstructed parts of the castle on site. Technically, Ne Castle was constructed before the main era of Japanese castle development, so while there are still gates, baileys, and yagura watchtowers, there is no main keep. There is little stonework, and the walls are just wooden posts palisades on the outside, and simple slat wood walls in the central compound.
In 1958 the castle passed into the custody of the state, which carried out further stabilisation work and a programme of archaeological investigation. In 1998 English Heritage passed the management of the site back to its current owner, Baron Howard of Rising, who continues to operate the castle as a tourist attraction. Castle Rising comprises three baileys, each defended by large earthworks, covering a total area of , which archaeologists Oliver Creighton and Robert Higham consider to be among the most impressive in Britain. In the inner bailey is the great keep, probably modelled on that of Norwich Castle.
Behind the church at Little Kimble to the east are mounds and banks in the grass which are all that remain of a motte and bailey castle, which would have been built at the order of the Normans soon after the conquest. These timber castles were built all over England and consisted of a high mound (the Motte), surmounted by a wooden tower, with subsidiary buildings surrounded by a rampart with palisades (the Bailey). At Little Kimble there was a motte, which is still 15 feet high, and two separate baileys, but the layout is not easy to recognise on the ground.Pevsner & Williamson p. 439.
Master Gunners House The baileys are separated by a stone wall, ditch and bank, with two defended gateways. The larger outer bailey would have seen entertaining events staged, vegetables grown, and animals kept; there was a graveyard and St. Mary's Chapel, which has completely disappeared, though the remains of the old Anglo-Saxon chapel on the site of an old Roman signal station can still be seen. A 12th-century medieval building, in length, stood in the outer bailey to accommodate royal visitors. It consisted of a long hall and private chamber with a fireplace used by the monarch, and rooms for preparing and storing food.

During the Sengoku period, in 1558 Hosono Fujiatsu built a castle at the conjunction of the Ano and Iwata rivers, using the rivers as natural moats. Oda Nobunaga took control of the castle in 1568 and ordered his younger brother Oda Nobukane to reside there in 1577 to consolidate Oda control over the Ise region. Under Oda Nobukane, the castle was greatly expanded in size, with the completion of the primary, secondary and third baileys, a five-story donjon and secondary donjon. Under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Nobukane was transferred to Tanba Province, and the castle was given to Hideyoshi’s retainer, Tomita Nobuhiro in 1595 along with a 50,000 koku domain.
Water was supplied by a well or cistern. Over time the focus of high status accommodation shifted from the keep to the bailey; this resulted in the creation of another bailey that separated the high status buildings – such as the lord's chambers and the chapel – from the everyday structures such as the workshops and barracks. From the late 12th century there was a trend for knights to move out of the small houses they had previously occupied within the bailey to live in fortified houses in the countryside. Although often associated with the motte-and-bailey type of castle, baileys could also be found as independent defensive structures.
In a change of tactics he led from the start and held on under pressure to win by a neck from the Michael Stoute-trained Auditorium despite hanging to the right in the final furlong. After the race it was reported that Johnston regarded the colt as his best prospect since Mister Baileys. A month later the form of the race was boosted when the fifth-placed finisher Milk It Mick won the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes. The Dewhurst had been intended as Lucky Story's final run of the season but was withdrawn by Johnston two days before the race after the colt performed poorly in a training gallop.
Aerial view of Pevensey Castle's inner bailey, showing remnants of a chapel and a well. The curtain wall and moat of the inner bailey The Normans divided the interior of the old Roman fort into two fortified enclosures, referred to as the inner and outer baileys. The inner bailey of the castle was, in effect, a castle within a castle, consisting of a walled fortification with a tower at each corner, surrounded by a moat and with a keep of unusual design at its eastern extremity, adjoining the old Roman curtain wall. The present stone fortifications of the inner bailey date mainly from the 13th and 14th centuries.
242 In 1067 William left England for Normandy via Pevensey. He also appears to have used the site to distribute lands to his Norman followers, with Pevensey Castle and the surrounding Rape of Penvensey being gifted to his half-brother Robert, Count of Mortain. Section of the Roman east wall of Pevensey Castle showing Norman repairs (the herringbone-style stonework) William's temporary fortification within the Roman walls was expanded to create a permanent Norman castle at Pevensey, probably during Robert's tenure sometime in the 1070s. The Roman walls were further repaired and two enclosures or baileys were created, divided by a ditch and a palisade constructed from timber.
Ten days after his win in Ireland, Turtle Island was sent to York Racecourse for the Gimcrack Stakes in which he carried top weight of 131 pounds and started the 5/2 second favourite. He took the lead approaching the final furlong and stayed on "gamely" after being overtaken by the filly Unblest to regain the lead in the final strides and win by a head. The favourite Mister Baileys, later to win the 2000 Guineas finished sixth of the eight runners. On his final appearance of the season, Turtle Island started the 85/40 favourite for the Group One Middle Park Stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket.
The New York Times described The Portable Veblen as "a screwball comedy with a dash of mental illness; a conventional tale of family pathos; a sendup of Big Pharma; a meditation on consumption, marriage, the nature of work." and concluded that it "is a novel of such festive originality that it would be a shame to miss." The Portable Veblen has also been reviewed by The Guardian, Library Journal, Booklist, Slate, the Los Angeles Times, The Irish Times, Kirkus Reviews. the Financial Times, the Star Tribune, and Publishers Weekly. It was on the 2016 National Book Award longlist, and the 2016 Baileys Prize for Women's Fiction shortlist.
The Black Bridge in the grounds of Plassey House crosses the Shannon from Limerick (Mill Side) into County Clare. Plassey House at the University of LimerickAnother building, Plassey House, passed through the hands of several Limerick families including the Maunsells, the Russells and the Baileys before it was acquired in 1933 by Patrick Keating, a Clareman who had made his fortune in China. On Patrick Keating's death the estate was purchased by the Rehabilitation Institute of Ireland from whom the new National Institute for Higher Education acquired it in 1970. In the 1970s a technical college, which later became the University of Limerick, was built at Plassey.
Corporation was originally based on Bank Street, near Castle Market, in a building which had been occupied by a succession of different nightclubs. The building itself was opened in 1967 as The Cavendish Club, was renamed in 1970 to Baileys Nightclub and again in 1978 to Romeo and Juliet's Nightclub and once more to Cairo Jax in 1985. Cairo Jax closed in 1997, at which point Corporation started operating there. In addition to the two separate dance-floors, connected by a main entrance corridor and also one further back, there was a Skate Ramp area and a selection of video games, with alcoves to relax in.
Local histories record that fishermen and farmers settled on Grape Island throughout the 18th Century, and like Plum Island, Grape Island had a somewhat sizeable population by the 1870s. By the late 1800s there was a hotel, operated by the MacKinney Family, a school where Grape Island's children attended class from April to November, and a number of small cottages and houses owned by seasonal and year-round residents. Some of the more prominent families on the island were the Smalls, Baileys, MacKinney's and Kilborns. Summer on the island saw additional seasonal residents and the island and its surroundings were popular with duck hunters, fishermen, lobstermen, and clammers.
In 1983, O'Donnell was contracted by Tony Award-winning producer James B. McKenzie to create an after-show revue to complement evening performances of the Peninsula Players in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. The Comedy Cabaret, as it came to be known, produced by Amy McKenzie, returned to Door County for a follow-up season opening in 1985 with O'Donnell's comedy revue, Dr. Funny Bones, as New Age Vaudeville in its own 100-seat theater in Glidden Lodge, Baileys Harbor. While working the Comedy Cabaret, O'Donnell also took to the main stage at Peninsula Players, starring in title roles in Larry Shue's The Nerd and The Foreigner.
Royal Rebel is a bay gelding with a narrow white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred by Lady Tavistock's Bedfordshire-based Bloomsbury Stud. He was sired by Robellino, a son of Roberto who won the Royal Lodge Stakes and sired several good winners including Mister Baileys (2000 Guineas) and Rebelline (Tattersalls Gold Cup). Royal Rebel's dam, Greenvera was a great-granddaughter of Glaneuse, a broodmare whose other descendants included Gold River and Goldikova. As yearling, Royal Rebel was sent to the Tattersalls sales in October 1997 where he was bought for 145,000 guineas by the bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson.
While maru (丸) most literally translates simply to "round" or "circle", kuruwa denotes an area enclosed by earthworks or other walls, and was a term also used to denote the enclosed red-light districts such as the Yoshiwara during the Edo period. As it relates to castles, most castles had three maru, main baileys, which could be called kuruwa; additional areas beyond this would be called sotoguruwa (外廓), or "kuruwa that are outside". At many castles still standing today in Japan, only the honmaru remains. Nijō Castle in Kyoto is an interesting exception, in that the ni-no-maru still stands, while all that remains of the honmaru is the stone base.
The weak points that the Castilians had exploited were improved. Part of the Moorish city wall with a tower en bec, topped with merlons Map of the Moorish Castle: The refortified city occupied the north- eastern part of the present-day city, reaching from the area of Grand Casemates Square up to Upper Castle Road. It was divided into three main quarters which functioned as a series of baileys through which troops could fall back in stages. The Tower of Homage (now usually called the Moorish Castle, though more properly that name refers to the entire fortified area of the Moorish city) was located at the highest point, serving as a final redoubt.
A ditch, six feet deep and forty feet wide was dug and the spoil used to construct a mound or motte about forty feet high with a flat top about fifty feet in diameter. The castle had two baileys further fortified by timber palisades and these were occupied by stables, workshops and sleeping quarters for the soldiers. Wakefield Castle and neighbouring Sandal Castle were granted to Thomas, Earl of Lancaster in 1318 and in 1324 King Edward II committed them to the care of Richard Moseley. At what time the castle was destroyed is not known but a great gale in 1330 which caused much damage in Wakefield may have been the cause.
In 1989, Hennessy was on the controversial judging panel of the (then) Whitbread Book Award, now known as the Costa Book Awards. In 1995, she was a member of the AT&T; Award for Non-fiction. The baileys, which were separated by rock-cut ditches, housed the castle's stables, workshops, and storage facilities. It is common for extant castles to be the result of several phases of construction, and were adapted and added to over the period of their use; however Château Gaillard essentially is the result of one period of building. The division into three wards bears similarities with the design of Château de Chinon, built by Henry II in the mid-12th century on a promontory overlooking a town. The outer bailey is the southernmost feature of the castle; it is pentagon shaped and there are five towers spaced along the wall, three of which are at corners.

Some bars in Southeast Asia serve a cocktail of iced coffee and whiskey, sometimes without cream, under the name "Irish coffee". Many drinks of hot coffee with a distilled spirit, and cream floated on top—liqueur coffees—are given names derived from Irish coffee, although the names are not standardised. Irish cream coffee (also known as Baileys coffee) can be considered a variant of Irish coffee, but involves the use of Irish cream as a "pre-mixed" substitute for the whisky, cream and sugar. Jamaican coffee would be expected to be made with rum; Highland coffee, also called Gaelic coffee, with Scotch whisky; Russian coffee with vodka; and so on, and so forth.
He overtook Barathea in the closing stages and won by half a length, with a gap of two and a lengths back to Grand Lodge who took third place ahead of Sayyedati and Mister Baileys. He raced in second place before fading in the straight and finished fifth behind the 66/1 outsider Maroof. On his final appearance, Distant View was sent to the United States to contest the Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs in November.

He came to Gumik – a fortress where the 'house of possession' was and here the seat of 'the ruler of the throne' was, the ruler left fleeing and arrived at the fortress called Humradzh where the golden throne was. Marwan spent winter and summer near it and then made peace with [Malik] on conditions of [tribute] – a thousand cattle and a hundred thousand Mudd – and then went from there into the land of Tumen."Бейлис В. At dawn on 4 March 1973, their yacht was struck by a whale and severely damaged. After transferring some supplies to an inflated life raft and dinghy and salvaging some food, a compass, and other supplies, the Baileys watched as Auralyn disappeared beneath the waves. To survive, they collected rainwater and when their meager food supplies ran out, began eating sea creatures such as turtles, seabirds and fish caught by hand or with safety pins fashioned into hooks. As they drifted in the open Pacific, the couple saw seven different ships, but were unable to attract these ships' attention since their signal flares failed and their emergency kit did not contain a signalling mirror.
Piel Castle, also known as Fouldry Castle or the Pile of Fouldray, is a castle situated on the south-eastern point of Piel Island, off the coast of the Furness Peninsula in north-west England. Built in the early-14th century by John Cockerham, the Abbot of neighbouring Furness Abbey, it was intended to oversee the trade through the local harbour and to protect against Scottish raids. The castle was built using stones from the local beach, and featured a large keep with surrounding inner and outer baileys. It was used as a base by the Yorkist pretender Lambert Simnel in 1487, but by 1534 it had fallen into ruin and passed into the hands of the Crown.

In 1776, Lord Mount Stuart (later created The 1st Marquess of Bute in 1794) began to renovate the property with the intention of turning it into a residence for his son, John. The grounds were radically altered under a programme of work that involved Capability Brown and his son- in-law, Henry Holland.; The stone wall that separated the inner and outer baileys was destroyed using gunpowder, the Shire Hall and the knights' houses in the outer bailey were destroyed and the remaining ground partially flattened; the whole of the area was laid with turf.; Considerable work was carried out on the main lodgings, demolishing the Herbert additions, building two new wings and removing many of the older features to produce a more contemporary, 18th-century appearance.

While at Newport in July 1916, he made the papers for rescuing a daughter of prominent locals who had gone under in rough surf at Baileys Beach, and he held her in the water for 10 minutes until lifeguards arrived. In 1917, he went to Washington, D.C. with his father, who persuaded the Surgeon General to admit him to the Army as a Private despite having flat feet and a suspect heart condition, caused by a childhood bout of pneumonia. Widener then served in World War I with the U.S. Expeditionary Forces in France with a medical unit, tending to the wounded and also serving as an interpreter because of his fluency in French. He rose through the ranks to Sergeant and then returned to Elkins Park as 1st Lieutenant in March 1919.
To do her part in serving the Confederacy, Kirkland Bailey nursed Confederate soldiers and reportedly served as a spy, disguised as an elderly woman selling cookies, for John Bell Hood and Jubal Anderson Early, leaving her daughter Dixie with friends in Virginia in order to do so. She returned to performing, alongside Gus and Alfred, as part of Hood's Minstrels, in 1864. Towards the end of the American Civil War, the Baileys enjoyed a good deal of fame with the popularity of Gus's song, The Old Gray Mare, a marching song he'd written during his time in the army. So popular was the tune that it became the official marching song of the Texas Brigade and later, in 1928, used as a theme song for the Democratic convention.
In addition to iron support, another problem with the Bailey design was that the frog mounting screws were under the iron, so the iron and the cap iron must be removed in order to adjust the position of the frog. This adjustment is necessary to vary the opening at the "mouth", which refers to the position of the iron in relation to the front of the slot in the sole, and which is used to control the size of shaving taken by the plane. The Bedrock design incorporated a new adjustment method, in which the entire frog could be wound forward or back, thus adjusting the mouth, without removing the blade. A drawback of Bedrocks, shared with Baileys, is the thin iron, which were cheaper to produce and believed to be more easily sharpened.
Luk, A.D.K.. Law of Life - Book I. Pueblo, Colorado: A.D.K. Luk Publications, 1989, pp. 23-27. According to Alice Bailey and Benjamin Creme there are sixty Masters of the Ancient Wisdom, defined as beings who have reached the Fifth Level of Initiation or above, with Djwal Khul claimed as the (telepathic) source of many esoteric teachings in Baileys' books. Elizabeth Clare Prophet revealed, by taking "dictations" from them, the names of many dozens of additional Ascended Masters that were previously unknown. The concept of recognizing the spiritual self, one's own psychological and karma battles and how to overcome them, and eventual Ascension of all humanity is covered in James Redfield's Celestine Prophecy and its sequels, The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision and The Secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight.
After seeing how long the queue in Roy's Rolls was and how much Roy Cropper (David Neilson) is needing help, she volunteers her services, needing a part-time job alongside her pharmacy job to help her family get by, despite having no experience working in a cafe and not being able to cook. Roy reluctantly hires Aggie and tries to train her up, but her cooking comes under criticism from some customers, namely Cathy Matthews (Melanie Hill). The criticism causes Aggie to break down crying over her family's situation, to which Roy comforts her and the pair's friendship blossoms from there. As she manages two jobs, Aggie manages to help get the Baileys back on their feet, during which time she forms friendships with several of the Street's residents, including Liz McDonald (Beverly Callard).
Aggie later announces to her family that she has decided to return to nursing and as a result, stops working at Roy's Rolls. On her first day back in March 2020, Ed tries to speak to James and tells him that for one day, they can pull together as a family to celebrate Aggie's return to nursing. The Baileys later meet in the pub, but it's clear that the relationship between Ed and James is very fraught. In April 2020, Ed and Aggie celebrated the anniversary of their first meeting and tried to have a romantic night in together with a candlelit dinner, however this was disrupted by a party hosted at No.1 next door, which led to Aggie calling the police due to the noise and vandalism of their own garden.
Kunohe Castle was a hirayama- style castle built on a river terrace overlooking a junction between the Mabechi River, Shiratori River and a small branch of the Shiratori River, which formed part of its natural defences to the north, west and east. The site covers an area of 340,000 square meters, making it one of the largest castle ruins in the Tōhoku region. As with similar contemporary castles (such as Ne Castle), the fortifications at Kunohe consisted of a number of dry moats, creating a number of enclosures, each with its own earthen ramparts: the main bailey, second bailey, and there smaller baileys (Matsunomaru, Ishizawadate, and Wakasadate). The entrance to the south was protected by a wide dry moat, and the area of the enclosures was over 500 square meters.
Distant View made his racecourse debut in a seven furlong maiden race at Newmarket Racecourse on 14 April 1994 and started the 2/1 favourite against sixteen opponents. He took the lead approaching the final quarter mile but was overtaken and beaten one and a half lengths by the Michael Stoute-trained Zilzal Zamaan, with the pair finishing nine lengths clear of the remainder. Despite his defeat, the colt was then moved up sharply in class to contest the 2000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at the same track two weeks later, and started a 16/1 outsider. Ridden by Willie Ryan, he made steady progress in the closing stages to finish fifth of the twenty-three runners behind Mister Baileys, Grand Lodge, Colonel Collins and State Performer.

For the next approximately eight miles, the road runs along the Jasper-Beaufort County Line. The divided highway briefly ends at the intersection of a private road named "Heffallump Road" but remains four-lanes with a center-left turn lane provision only to become a divided highway again at the Oldfield Golf Club and Equestrian Center. Curving back to the east as it approaches the intersection with South Carolina Highway 462, the road later re-enters Jasper County at the two ends of Old Baileys Road, then runs along the Jasper-Beaufort County border again until it reaches the intersection of Snake Road and Callawassie Island's entrance road. Now fully in Beaufort County once again the road becomes more scenic, with panoramas of marshes and surrounding islands extending for miles.
Later, with World War II over and George's younger brother Harry Bailey scheduled to come home as a war hero, Mr. Potter encounters George's Uncle Billy at the bank, where Uncle Billy is making a deposit of $8,000 in cash. When the kingdom of Powys was divided, after the death in 1160 of Madog ap Maredudd, the last prince of the whole of Powys, Llannerch Hudol was given to his illegitimate son Caswallon together with the commote of Broniarth, it subsequently became part of the principality of Powys Wenwynwyn. Its main centre was possibly the Welshpool motte and bailey castle (Domen Castell) built by Cadwgan ap Bleddyn in 1111, but there are at least three other motte and baileys within the small commote including Powis Castle (Castell Coch) and Ladies Mount. Together with Ystrad Marchell and Deuddwr it formed the Teirswydd ("three commotes") which were among the lands restored into the possession of Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn in return for his homage and fealty by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd at Ystumanner in 1263.
A cadet branch of the Takeda clan from Kai Province gained control of Wakasa Province during the Muromachi Period, but were based in Kyoto and ruled in absentia. The tacked were heavily involved in the politics of the Onin War and were noted supporters of the Ashikaga shogunate. In 1522, Takeda Motomitsu, the fifth generation shugo of Wakasa decided relocate from the war-ravaged Kyoto to his domain and began construction of the castle, which would eventually extend 500 meters from north to south, and would include some 139 kuruwa or baileys , with a palace at the foot of the mountain. The Takeda has close relations with the court nobility and men of arts in Kyoto, and invited many persons of culture to Wakasa as a refuge from the ongoing wars.
Following the Norman conquest of England in 1066, Odo constructed this large castle with two earthwork baileys and a central motte, intending that the castle administer his property in the region and provide a substantial military base in the event of an Anglo-Saxon revolt. Odo's estates in England were seized following a failed rebellion against William II in 1088, and Deddington Castle was taken back into royal control. The Anglo-Norman lord William de Chesney acquired the castle in the 12th century and rebuilt it in stone, raising a stone curtain wall around a new inner bailey, complete with a defensive tower, gatehouse and domestic buildings. After de Chesney's death, his descendants fought for control of the castle in the royal courts, and it was temporarily seized several times by King John at the start of the 13th century.

Damietta' position on the west bank of the Nile river is a strategic location that urged many enemies' fleets to conquer the city, and that also urged its people to build a number of fortifying castles and towers to protect the city. In 1218, The Crusaders started to approach Damietta, and they made a dike surrounded by a bailey to protect them, and they settled there where they initiated their assaults against the strong resistance from the Dumyaty people. The resistance stilled strong for four months, but the Crusaders condensed their attacks and they surrounded the whole city abandoning it and its people from any coming support. However, the Dumyaty people stand strong and kept resisting till the summer season came, and the flood filled the Nile river with water till the baileys were destroyed, and the dike became like an island surrounded with water.
Archaeological excavations on the site of Lidl supermarket revealed the original medieval town, with several house remains, associated field systems, fish traps and mill races. Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, set about building fortified houses, called mottes and baileys, in case the native Irish would regroup and attack. The remains of a motte and bailey can be found in Ratoath 5 km from Ashbourne. Once settled, Hugh de Lacy divided the land among his army. A large portion at Killeglan was given to a family called Wafre in 1220. This family lived there until 1420, the last member of this family having built a tower house (a fortified house often called a castle). The castle and lands became the property of the Segrave family, who remained owners until 1649. The first of the family recorded in Meath, Richard Sydgrave, was Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer 1423-5.
Depiction of the surviving castle and walls in 1888; red-dotted line shows the line of the castle's inner and outer baileys During the English Civil War of the 1640s, Wareham initially supported Parliament, and £60 was spent in 1642 improving the town walls.; The Royalists, under Sir Ralph Hopton, took the town in 1643, but Parliament retook it in 1644, when soldiers led by Sir Ashley Cooper forced their way through the West Gate in the walls.; ; The town wall was reinforced during the conflict, possibly with circular platforms positioned at key points. Parliament was advised that the defences remained useful and that they were too substantial to be slighted - deliberately damaged to put them beyond use. In 1685, seven men were executed for their part in the Monmouth Rebellion on the west bank of the defences, the section of which now carries the name of the "Bloody Bank".
Nagoya Castle Unlike in Europe, where the advent of the cannon spelled the end of the age of castles, Japanese castle-building was spurred, ironically, by the introduction of firearms. Though firearms first appeared in Japan in 1543, and castle design almost immediately saw developments in reaction, Azuchi castle, built in the 1570s, was the first example of a largely new type of castle, on a larger, grander scale than those that came before, boasting a large stone base (, musha-gaeshi), a complex arrangement of concentric baileys (, maru), and a tall central tower. In addition, the castle was located on a plain, rather than on a densely forested mountain, and relied more heavily on architecture and manmade defenses than on its natural environment for protection. These features, along with the general appearance and organization of the Japanese castle, which had matured by this point, have come to define the stereotypical Japanese castle.
In August 2019, the Baileys are explored more as a family, as it is revealed why they moved to Coronation Street in the first place, having used to live in a bigger, more luxurious house. Aggie's husband, Ed secretly battled a gambling addiction and as a result, they lost their house but unable to take responsibility for his actions and admit the truth, the Bailey's eldest son, Michael took the blame and face the brunt of Aggie's anger. Aggie soon began to realise their financial hardships when her card was declined in the Corner Shop but she only discovered the actual truth when trying to throw Michael out after uncovering his fake pregnancy scam that he was dragged into operating with Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove). A heartbroken Aggie could not believe that Ed had deceived her and their family in such a way, which caused her to walk out and not come home that night.
The motte and 15th-century brick bridge at Pleshey Castle Pleshey Castle is a man-made motte and bailey castle in Pleshey in Essex, England. It was built in the 11th century and it is one of the best preserved motte and bailey castles in England. Pleshey Castle's earliest documentary reference dates from 1143, but archaeological excavation has shown that the castle was most likely completed between 1096 and 1106. It was a motte and bailey castle, which consisted of a wooden palisade and tower on a high man-made hill (motte) surrounded by two baileys (castle yard or ward) from its inception, and which at some time in the castle's early history was surrounded by a moat. The earthworks of the motte and south bailey are still extant and intact, whilst the outline of the north bailey (levelled in the 13th century and now buried beneath the modern village) can still be seen in the semi-circular street plan of the village.
The hills and valleys, however, were beautiful, filled at all seasons with a wonderful light, and these had and continued to have for Wood an inspiration and influence throughout his life. While he lacked artistic surroundings in his youth, he also had the acquaintance of great contemporaries, Prentiss, Upham, Spaulding, Peck, Reed, Walton, Jewett, Langdon, Merrill, Dewey, Thompson, Baileys, Heaton, Lord, Lamb and many more besides, who left notable records in Congress, on the bench, at the bar, in theology, finance, legislation, party politics and in the bibliography of Vermont. These neighbors of his were good, strong men, whose characters and excelling work influenced the youth of Wood as also his conceptions of a strong art, as was evidenced in later years by much of his best work. Before the introduction of daguerreotypes Montpelier was accustomed to receive an occasional visit from some peripatetic portrait painter and it was such a painter who first influenced Wood and started him in his career.

Tall towers and the castle's location on a plain provided greater visibility from which the garrison could employ their guns, and the complex set of courtyards and baileys provided additional opportunities for defenders to retake portions of the castle that had fallen. Cannon were rare in Japan due to the expense of obtaining them from foreigners, and the difficulty in casting such weapons themselves as the foundries used to make bronze temple bells were simply unsuited to the production of iron or steel cannon. The few cannon that were used were smaller and weaker than those used in European sieges, and many of them were in fact taken from European ships and remounted to serve on land; where the advent of cannon and other artillery brought an end to stone castles in Europe, wooden ones would remain in Japan for several centuries longer. A few castles boasted 'wall guns', but these are presumed to have been little more than large caliber arquebuses, lacking the power of a true cannon.
In 2012, his actions resulted in signing agreements with world-scale alcohol producers: one with Brown-Forman (the owner of Jack Daniels and Finlandia brands) for the production of Maximus vodka and another with Diageo (the owner of Johnnie Walker and Baileys) for the production of Smirnoff vodka. As a result of the financial restructuring, the company is planning to enter the stock market in 2016. As part of the restructuring process, Ślak carried out an investment in Poland's most modern alcohol production line licensed by CFT Packaging S.A. The line is able to produce 100 million bottles a year, which increases the overall productivity of Akwawit-Polmos S.A. to 150 million bottles a year, thus placing the company among the biggest alcohol producers in Central-Eastern Europe. In 2013, he replaced the deceased Aleksander Gudzowaty as the President of the Management Board of Bartimpex S.A. Ślak is the President of the Management Board and a shareholder of HGBS Finanse S.A, a fund investing in new technology and "excise business" enterprises.

The Williamsons and Baileys continued their Ouija-board sessions, getting their own personal revelations from the Space Brothers, which led to a drastic falling-out with Adamski. In 1954, Williamson and Bailey published The Saucers Speak which emphasized supposed short-wave radio communications with friendly saucer pilots, but in fact depended for almost all its contents on the Ouija board sessions Bailey and Williamson held regularly from 1952 onward. The novel features an American adoptee from Guatemala named Chrysalis Moffat and focuses on events in her and her family's lives using an unusual style reminiscent of notes taken while composing the novel. Newman's third novel, The Country of Ice Cream Star (2014), was among eighty titles nominated for 2015 Folio Prize, and among twenty works nominated for the 2015 Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction. The novel follows the protagonist, Ice Cream Fifteen Star, through a dystopian future United States while she searches for a cure for her brother's inherited disease. Her fourth novel, The Heavens (2019), published by Grove Atlantic, tells the story of a woman who lives in the early twenty-first century, but who returns every night in dreams to Elizabethan England, where she lives as Emilia Lanier, a Jewish poet whose circle of acquaintances includes an obscure poet named William Shakespeare. The New York Times Book Review called it “a strange and beautiful hybrid.” She is the author of one additional novel, Cake (2008); a memoir, Changeling (2010); and a guide to Western literature, The Western Lit Survival Kit: How To Read The Classics Without Fear (2012).
