Orton followed up by applying a reverse chinlock and attacking Cena's leg. After Orton controlled the match for several minutes, Cena gained the advantage and performed various maneuvers, which included a twisting belly to belly side slam and the Five Knuckle Shuffle; Orton, however, was able to counter an FU attempt into an inverted headlock backbreaker.
Often used as a counter to the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, this variant sees the attacking wrestler in the Tilt-a-whirl position, but instead of being lifted and slammed onto a knee or into the mat, the attacker reaches back and applies a three-quarter facelock before falling to a seated position, with the opponent's jaw impacting with the shoulder of the wrestler. British independent wrestler Lana Austin uses this move as a finisher, calling it Kiss of Death. Other variation sees the attacker tilt-a-whirl their opponent and then dropping them in the stunner.
Pallo was a risk-taking athlete on the one hand but pushed credibility to the limits at other times owing to his over-the-top cockiness. Fans rejoiced in his sit-on back breaker and arm lever, his aeroplane spin, and his cross-shoulder backbreaker. Pallo's star was further affirmed when a 1964 date in Bishop's Stortford sold out in only 3 hours. His sole major accolade during his career was a short 1969 run as the British Heavy Middleweight Champion, having defeated Bert Royal on 21 April before dropping the title back to Royal the following month.
The match ended when Owens attempted a Pop Up Powerbomb but Ambrose countered the move with a Hurricanrana and executed Dirty Deeds on Owens to win the match and advance to the finals. After that, The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods), Sheamus and King Barrett faced The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso), The Lucha Dragons (Kalisto and Sin Cara) and Ryback in a Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team match. Barrett was eliminated by Sin Cara after a Springboard Senton Bomb. Jimmy Uso was eliminated by Xavier Woods after a Backbreaker/Diving Double Foot Stomp combination with Kingston.
Evans kicked Cuerno in the head to leave himself and Fenix in the ring. Fenix countered Evans' octopus hold with knee strikes, then used a Fire Driver and pinned him for the victory and the championship. The penultimate match was a no disqualifications match between Texano and Blue Demon Jr. Mr. Cisco and Cortez Castro freely interfered to help Demon, breaking up the pin when Texano hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, a spinebuster and a sitout powerbomb. Then, Chavo Guerrero Jr. ran out with a chair, teased hitting Demon, but hit Texano across the back instead.
Sometimes abbreviated to GTS, this move sees a wrestler place an opponent in a fireman's carry to drop the opponent in front of them. While the opponent is falling, the wrestler quickly lifts the left knee up towards the opponent's face. Kenta, the innovator of the maneuver, also uses an inverted variation in which he lifts his opponent into an Argentine backbreaker rack, throwing the opponent forward and striking his knee in the back of the opponent's head, called Ura Go 2 Sleep (Ura means inverted). This Variation is used by Sammy Guevara and T-Bar.
Also known as the Victoria Driver or Burning Hammer, this move is executed from an Argentine backbreaker rack position. The wrestler then falls sideways, driving the opponent's head to the mat. This is considered an extremely dangerous move, as the opponent's body cannot roll with the natural momentum of the move to absorb the impact. In a cut-throat variation of this driver, instead of holding the body of the opponent, a wrestler holds the far arm of the opponent across the opponent's own throat and maintains it by holding the opponent's wrist before performing the inverted Death Valley driver.
In the sixth match El Mesías took on TNA wrestler A.J. Styles in an attempt to earn a shot at the AAA Mega Championship. Towards the end of the match, Styles set up for his finishing maneuver, Styles Clash, but El Mesías got out of it and hit a spear. Styles then came back with a Pelé, but when he went for the Superman, El Mesías blocked it with his knees. After a double knee backbreaker and a Mesías Splash, El Mesías scored the three count to become the number one contender to the title held by Jeff Jarrett.
NaturalMotion officially announced Backbreaker on 22 August 2007 with the release of a short video trailer showcasing some of the aspects of the Euphoria engine. Along with this, a press release from NaturalMotion CEO Torsten Reil stated "By utilizing our motion synthesis engine, Euphoria, players will never make the same tackle twice, giving them an intensely unique experience every time they play the game." The targeted release date for the game was late 2008, according to the aforementioned press release. In mid-2008, still without any release date planned, another trailer was released for the game.
Due to this, developers pushed to advertise that "no two tackles are the same" in an attempt to draw players to what they called a more physically realistic football game than its competitors. The physics system was rated well by the reviewers, who commented that the integration of realistic physics created a very lifelike interaction between the players on the field. Along with the Euphoria engine, Backbreaker also features a create- a-team tool and logo creator similar to the editor found in Forza Motorsport 2. Players can create their own team or modify an existing team.
In the first semi-main event of the evening, AAA's El Mesías took on TNA's Sting in what AAA referred to as a "dream match". After a short back-and-forth match, El Mesías hit Sting with a double knee backbreaker, which, however, was only good for a near-fall. As El Mesías climbed the turnbuckles, looking for a Mesías Splash, he was distracted by Konnan, Jeff Jarrett, Karen Jarrett, Abyss and Magnus coming to ringside. Sting used the distraction to superplex his opponent down to the mat, before locking him in his signature hold, the Scorpion Deathlock.
Nikki Bella has used both variations as a finisher in WWE. A variation of the Argentine backbreaker rack, known as La Reienera, sees the opponent held across the wrestler's back rather than their shoulders/neck. Often set up by a tilt-a-whirl, the opponent ends up suspended with one arm hooked behind them and both legs hooked by the wrestler's other arm. Another variation, sometimes known as the "Accordion Rack," sees the wrestler hold the opponent across their shoulders, behind their head, and bending their opponent, sometimes to where the opponent's feet touch their head.
Also known technically as the overhead gutwrench backbreaker rack, this sees an attacking wrestler first lift an opponent up so the opponent's back is resting on the wrestler's shoulder, with the opponent's head pointing in the direction that the wrestler is facing. The wrestler then links their arms around the face-up opponent's torso and presses down, squeezing the opponent's spine against the wrestler's shoulder. A common variant of this hold has the attacking wrestler also apply a double underhook before or after lifting the opponent. This was used by Colt Cabana as the Colt .45.
In 1987, Luger went to work for Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP), which was under the NWA banner, with the nickname "The Total Package" and began using "The Human Torture Rack", an Argentine backbreaker, as his finisher. He was first booked as an associate to Ric Flair's "Four Horsemen" stable until Ole Anderson was kicked out and he became an official member of the group. His first big feud was with Nikita Koloff, whom he defeated for the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship on July 11, 1987. Manager James J. Dillon threw a chair over the top of the cage while the referee, Earl Hebner, was down.
Sujei came to the ring wearing the Pro Wrestling Revolution (PWR) Women's Championship belt she had won from Lady Apache only a few days prior to the show. The second match of the night saw the storyline between Doctor X and Fabián el Gitano finally appeared on Super Viernes after developing for months on CMLL's secondary shows. Fabián teamed up with Rey Cometa and Pegasso to take on the Los Guerreros Tuareg team of Doctor X, Loco Max and Hooligan.
Canadianman is a Canadian Choujin, patterned after the Canadian flag. Despite his supposed strength, he is eliminated early during the 20th Choujin Olympics, becoming a notable background character ever since along with his best friend, Specialman. He and Specialman has gained infamy for their constant losses, such as when they formed a tag team during the Dream Choujin Tag tournament before their entry was stolen by Ashuraman and Sunshine. In the True Devil Choujin arc, he attempts to redeem himself by facing Pirateman, and despite his intensive training to learn more technical moves as well as his Rebuilt Canadian Backbreaker, he was still broken in half by Pirateman's Saint Elmo's Fire.
The match featured Kobashi doing several of his signature moves, including the Cobra Twist, half nelson suplex, rolling cradle and 187 chops. At the end, he hit Kanemaru with a superplex and a lariat, but his pin attempt was broken up by Kanemaru's partners. Akiyama then hit Taniguchi with an exploder suplex and Sasaki hit a German suplex on Kenta, while Mutoh hit a backbreaker and a moonsault on Kanemaru. Akiyama, Mutoh and Sasaki then all signaled for Kobashi, who hit a body slam on Kanemaru and then climbed the ropes for the final moonsault of his career, which won the match for his team.
The game's Euphoria animation system was well liked by reviewers. PlayStation LifeStyle's Joseph Peterson commented that "Realism is a major plus in Backbreaker. Running with the ball feels lifelike and better than any other football game on the market... The fact that the game really tries to make you feel what the player is feeling is probably the game's crowning achievement ... literally every tackle is completely different," while Jay Acevedo of GameFocus added, "while the game does not scream perfection, it delivers the promise of a realistic and exhilarating experience," in his review. Although developers billed a realistic atmosphere, reviewers criticized that aspect of the game.
Backbreaker is a simulation-style American football game, which allows the player to take control of a team of football players and compete against the CPU or another player in a variety of game modes. The game features 56 built-in teams plus three unlockable teams, and also allows the player to create 32 additional ones for a total of 91 possible teams. It lacks any licensing from the National Football League, due to the fact that they were not able to negotiate a licensing agreement with the NFL or NFLPA Because of this, the developers emphasized the game's customization tools. Creating a logo in the team creator feature.
As Park celebrated the elimination by dancing and making fun of the Jarretts, all the while dominating Electroshock, hitting him with a double knee backbreaker, Karen grabbed his leg from outside the ring. Park then lifted Karen by her hair onto the ring apron, but before he could do anything else to her, he was attacked by Electroshock. As referees Pepe Casas and Piero were distracted, trying to get Karen off the ring apron, someone dressed and masked as El Zorro entered the ring and hit Park twice with a kendo stick. Electroshock used his opportunity to eliminate Park and win the Copa Antonio Peña.
Swagger appeared to have won when Zeb Colter threw in Ricardo Rodriguez's towel for Del Rio and referee Mike Chioda mistook it as Rodriguez throwing it, but later reversed the decision upon viewing a video replay, allowing the match to continue. Del Rio would go on to win after applying the cross armbreaker, which forced Swagger to quit. The fifth match was a Tornado tag team match for the WWE Tag Team Championship between Team Hell No and Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns of The Shield. The Shield picked up the victory by executing an Argentine backbreaker rack and diving knee drop combination on Daniel Bryan.
The main event was a Ladder Match for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship involving Alberto Del Rio, Bray Wyatt, Cesaro, John Cena, Kane, Randy Orton, Roman Reigns and United States Champion Sheamus. During the match, Cesaro and Sheamus fought atop the ladder but Wyatt pushed the ladder, causing Cesaro and Sheamus to hang onto the championship belts. Orton executed an Elevated DDT off a ladder bridged between the apron and a broadcast table on Sheamus. After everyone fought each other off, Sheamus controlled the match by performing a Diving Shoulder Block on Kane, an Irish Curse Backbreaker on Del Rio, White Noise on Orton and a Brogue Kick on Cena.
He was ranked 67th by Den of Geek in their 2015 rating of the series' 73 playable characters, with the site calling him "unbelievably generic." Dustin Thomas of Destructoid ranked him third in his 2014 ranking of the series' five worst MK characters ("there really isn't a whole lot to say about him"). CJ Smillie of Game Rant named Dairou's "Backbreaker" Hara-Kiri finishing move in Deception among the ten worst Mortal Kombat Fatalities (sixth): "Bo’ Rai Cho's Hara-Kiri stretched the player's suspension of disbelief to its limits, but this one punched a hole right through it." However, his "Ribs to the Eyes" Fatality from Deception has received positive critical attention.
Martel signed with the AWA in 1982 and quickly ascended through the ranks, defeating Jumbo Tsuruta to win the AWA World Heavyweight Championship on May 13, 1984. His reign as champion lasted nearly nineteen months (the third-longest title reign and the longest title reign of the 1980s), during which time he wrestled several matches with NWA World Champion Ric Flair, as well as with Jimmy Garvin, Nick Bockwinkel and King Tonga. His finishing move alternated between the slingshot splash and the combination atomic drop/back suplex. On December 29, 1985, Martel lost the title to Stan Hansen, who forced him to submit to the "Brazos Valley Backbreaker" (Hansen's version of the Boston crab).
The Luchas de Apuestas match is the most prestigious match type in Lucha Libre, which is why it was chosen over the championship match to main event the show. In the semi-main event Último Guerrero won the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship after forcing Shocker to submit to his own trademark submission hold La Reienera (a Modified spinning backbreaker rack). In the main event Vampiro gained a measure of revenge for his tag team partner as he defeated Rey Bucanero, pinning him to win the third and deciding fall. Following the match Bucanero's long hair was cut off and then the rest of his hair was shaved off as per the Lucha Libre traditions.
When Orton was leaving the ring, Sheamus came out carrying a pipe for his street fight with Triple H. At the start of the match, Triple H attacked Sheamus and executed a spinebuster. Triple H attempted a Pedigree, but Sheamus countered and began to work over Triple H, executing a neckbreaker on the floor on Triple H. Back in the ring, Triple H performed a DDT on Sheamus, who executed an Irish Curse Backbreaker for a near-fall. On the entrance ramp, Triple H attacked Sheamus with a kendo stick and attempted a Pedigree, but Sheamus countered with a Back Body Drop onto the entrance ramp and executed a Brogue Kick. Back in the ring, Sheamus executed another Brogue Kick.
Chris Jericho with his Walls of Jericho (Elevated Boston crab) on Shawn Michaels The Boston crab is a professional wrestling hold that typically starts with one wrestler lying in a supine position on the mat, with the other wrestler standing and facing them. It is a type of spinal lock where the wrestler hooks each of the opponent’s legs in one of their arms and then turns the opponent face-down, stepping over them in the process. The final position has the wrestler in a semi-sitting position and facing away from the opponent, with the opponent’s back and legs bent back toward their head. The original name for the maneuver was the Backbreaker, before that term became known for its current usage.
La Mascara teamed up with Rush and Shocker to take on the team of La Peste Negra (El Felino and Negro Casas) and Volador Jr. Volador Jr. started the first fall off right for his team when he was able to perform an Ataque Depredador ("Predator attack"; Double knee backbreaker) on La Mascara before pinning him. Moments later Negro Casas forced Rush to submit to ensure their team took the first fall of the match. The tecnico team managed to even the score minutes later, tying the match at one fall each. During the third fall the rudo Mascotas got involved in the match, with Volador Jr. tossing his Mascota Mije onto Rush, and moments later La Peste Negras Mascota Zacarias the Parrot execute a Tiger feint kick to the head of Rush as well.
With the match in his control following a Skull Bomb and a topé suicida, Park pulled out a table from under the ring, set it up inside the ring and climbed on top of it for his signature dance, but was then surprised by a diving spear through the table from El Mesías, which was however only good for a two count. El Mesías followed up with a double knee backbreaker and a Mesías Splash for another two count, before locking Park in a sharpshooter. Eventually, Park managed to reach the ropes, but El Mesías pulled him back to the center of the ring and re-applied the hold. Park feigned submission by lightly tapping El Mesías on the back, which led to him releasing the hold as he believed he had won the match.
Every character performs a variety of suplexes, a backbreaker, a tombstone piledriver, an atomic drop, various diving attacks, and a variety of kicks, punches, elbow, and forearm shots. Several finishing moves have a similar appearance to "weak" moves that are done in the beginning of a wrestling match; like Dustin Rhodes' Bulldog and Johnny B. Badd's basic left hook. Modes of play include singles, tag team, an eight-man singles tournament, a tag team tournament between four teams, and the "Ultimate Challenge," where a player must defeat every other wrestler in the game. Different stipulations can be selected for matches; bouts can either be contested under one fall, first to three falls, or a time limit of differing lengths where the most falls within the time limit wins the match.

The EMLL 54th Anniversary Show served the dual purpose of not only celebrating Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL) 5th anniversary but also to commemorate the retirement of Gory Guerrero, one of the pioneers in Mexican wrestling. Guerrero had made his professional wrestling debut in 1937 and over the years been involved in a large number of memorable matches and story lines and innovated a number of wrestling moves, including two named after him: the Gory Special, a type of backbreaker and the Gory Bomb as well as being one of the first to use the La de a Caballo or Camel Clutch. To celebrate the event EMLL had all four of Gory Guerrero's children appear on the show, at the time only Gory's youngest son Eddy worked for EMLL full-time while Chavo, Mando and Hector worked primarily in the United States but were contracted for this show specifically. In the second match of the evening the young Eddy Guerrero teamed up with his regular partner El Hijo del Santo, a second generation wrestler like Eddy as he was the son of one of Lucha Libre most famous names El Santo.
