Levithan was born in Short Hills, New Jersey, to a family of Jewish background. At nineteen, Levithan received an internship at Scholastic Corporation where he began working on The Baby-sitters Club series. Levithan still works for Scholastic as an editorial director. Levithan is also the founding editor of PUSH, a young-adult imprint of Scholastic Press focusing on new voices and new authors.

The Baby Sitters was a music group that recorded four albums of children's folk songs from 1958 until 1968. Its original members were ex-Weaver Lee Hays as composer, Doris Willens Kaplan as lyricist, actor Alan Arkin on guitar, and his wife Jeremy Yaffe Arkin. In 1964, Jeremy was replaced by Barbara Dana, Arkin's second wife, and Arkin's eight-year-old son Adam was featured on a few songs. All of the Kaplan and Arkin boys participated.

Doris Willens (born 1924) is an American singer-songwriter, journalist, advertising executive and author. She was a member of the Baby Sitters children's folk music group along with Alan Arkin and Lee Hays, and she wrote Lonesome Traveler: The Life of Lee Hays (1988), describing his career with the Almanac Singers and the Weavers. Willens worked for the New York Journal- American as a columnist covering Madison Avenue advertising agencies. For nearly two decades she ran public relations for ad agency Doyle Dane Bernbach, ending as vice president.

Raina Telgemeier (born May 26, 1977) is an American cartoonist whose works include the autobiographic webcomic Smile (A Dental Drama), which was published by Scholastic Press's Graphix imprint as a full-color graphic novel in February 2010. Smile, as well as the follow-up Sisters and the fiction graphic novel Drama, have all been on The New York Times Best Seller lists. She has also written and illustrated Ghosts and four graphic novels adapted from The Baby-Sitters Club by Ann M. Martin. Mary Anne is the only one she tells, and she too is under pressure as the curiosity of her friends grows. Claudia is forced to attend summer school because she failed science. Kristy promises to help Claudia study but, because she is seeing her father, she fails to keep her promise. Later on, the members of The Baby-Sitters Club, along with some of their clients, perform a rap song for Claudia who has to take a test; if she fails the test she would have to repeat the eighth grade and drop out of the club.

At that year's San Diego Comic-Con, Telgemeier met that editor's boss, who invited her to pitch an idea for Scholastic. When Telgemeier mentioned she had been a fan of Ann M. Martin's The Baby-Sitters Club series, they asked her to work up a graphic novel adaptation. The idea for The Baby-Sitters Club series originated with Jean Feiwel, an editor at Scholastic who saw the popularity of a novel called Ginny's Babysitting Job and realized there was a market for novels about babysitting. She contacted Ann M. Martin, who took the general idea of a babysitter's club, and created the characters, plots, and settings for the series. It was initially planned as a four-book series, but after the first four novels were moderately successful, Scholastic ordered two more, followed by twelve more as the series grew in popularity. By the time the sixth novel was published, the first printing was up to 100,000 copies.

Smile, her graphic novel based on her webcomic, is a 2010 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honor title. This is the first time a graphic novel has been nominated for or won this award. In 1958, Hays began recording a series of children's albums with The Baby Sitters, a group that included a young Alan Arkin, the son of a family friend of the Robinsons. After the great financial success of Peter Paul and Mary's cover of "If I Had a Hammer" in the mid-1960s, Hays, whose mental and physical health had been shaky for years, lived mostly on income from royalties. In 1967, he moved to Croton-on-Hudson, New York where he devoted himself to tending his organic vegetable garden, cooking, writing, and socializing. He wrote to a friend that in his new surroundings he had no idea how to earn new money but that, "Having a listed number with no fear of Trotskyite crank calls is a huge relief".
