The event was organized by Silverback Bboy Events and paid $90,150 in cash prize money, plus trips for several winners to the Freestyle Session World Finals in Los Angeles, as well as a trip to compete at Undisputed in Marseille, France for the 1-on-1 Open winner. The 1-on-1 Open and 1-on-1 B-girl winners also received a Mackie Freeplay Portable PA Speaker with the optional lithium ion battery allowing for 10 hours of continuous music. A panel of seven judged the 1-on-1 Open, the 3-on-3 Open and the 1-on-1 B-girl with two alternates in case a judge happens to be in the same crew as a competitor.

In 1999, Jerkins joined Sony/Epic Records to promote power vocalist Rhona, Pop/R&B; girl group So Plush and rapper Fats. Jo is a hostess, also known as a "B" girl (a euphemism for a prostitute), in a "cliphouse", a seedy waterfront nightclub where the patrons are set up for a pickpocket operation. The club is owned by Eddie Morgan, who keeps an eye on things by posing as the piano player. A former hostess, Annie, returns to the club in order to tell Morgan off and let him know that he ruined her life. Not getting satisfaction, she attempts to get Jo to turn witness against Morgan in order to get him arrested, but Jo is too afraid.

Eternal was a British R&B; girl group formed in 1992 with the line-up consisting of Easther Bennett and her older sister Vernie Bennett, with Kéllé Bryan and her friend and classmate Louise Nurding (now known as Louise Redknapp), who were also recruited into the group by the label. The group became an international success, selling around 10 million records worldwide. Louise Redknapp left the group before the release of their second album to focus on her solo career with the same label. Kéllé Bryan left the group under undisclosed circumstances in 1998. Eternal made a brief comeback in 2013, with Kéllé Bryan returning to the group, only for the group to disband once again in 2014.

Ruza Blue, nicknamed "Kool Lady Blue", founded an all-races dance club in June 1982 (formerly at Club Negril 1981 - 82) which featured a mash up of all musical styles from early hip hop, electro, funk, soul, disco, rock, punk, dub and electronic dance music. Jon Baker, the future founder of Gee Street Records, worked the door. Hip hop pioneers such as Grand Mixer D.ST and Afrika Bambaataa began DJing there and the club sponsored breaking or b-boy/b-girl competitions featuring the Rock Steady Crew, Floor Master Crew New York City Breakers, graffiti artists' murals, and even double- exhibitions by The Fantastic Four local American Double Dutch League champions with emcees hosting the nights. Artists such as Madonna, Run DMC, Kraftwerk, Shannon, Malcolm McLaren, New Edition, Kurtis Blow, The Beastie Boys and Yello performed there.

During the hiatus of the girl group in 2002, Beyoncé embarked on her solo career that she pursued following the disbandment of the group in 2005. She has written and recorded material for her six studio albums, namely Dangerously in Love (2003), B'Day (2006), I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008), 4 (2011), her self-titled album, Beyoncé (2013), and her second visual album Lemonade (2016). Apart from her work in music, Beyoncé has launched a career in acting. She made her debut in the 2001 musical film Carmen: A Hip Hopera, prior to appearing in major films, including Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), The Pink Panther (2006), Dreamgirls (2006), Cadillac Records (2008), Epic (2013) and The Lion King (2019).

The musician decided to wear her own designs on the video, and collaborated with designer Carri Mundane on a tracksuit for the shoot. "Galang" received some airplay on MTV2's Subterranean, and was also shown when she appeared as a guest on the show on 29 May 2005. Ranjani Gopalarathinam of Coolhunting notes that M.I.A.'s personal style "might be a little harder to imitate but believe me I will try – the b-girl vacations in the tropics, but won’t ever forsake her kicks for a pair of thongs (cuz she's gotta dance)", concluding "When you see the video you feel familiar with the visuals, but that's just because you WISH." The visual artwork in the video, as Jason Jenkins of The Japan Times notes, shares the dichotomy present between M.I.A.'s music and lyrics; tanks, grenades and burning palm trees figure prominently in her work, but are presented in the video in bright, kaleidoscopic colours using stencils and Day-Glo spray paint.

After the album's release She Rockers with Betty Boo got signed to a major as did DJ Loose, who joined Cash Crew, Sir Drew, Iroc, and Flex became Mighty Ethnicz, Mell-o-D formed NSO and the scratch DJ DJ Streets Ahead gained worked on TV. After the album the label started the Positive Beat Roadshow linking in with Sahara Sound System for the next two years. The Roadshow worked by taking artists from the Known 2 Be Down project and local street poets, emcess, Djs and beat boxers around London to community centres and cultural events. The mainstays of the Roadshow were MC Reason a local b-girl and emcee, DJ Chin, Jonie D, Scare 437, Rapski and Echo the human beat box.

Sha-Rock is the first female emcee-rapper of hip hop culture "on wax" or record on vinyl from its inception in the 1970s. She began as a local b-girl, or breakdancer, in the earliest days of South Bronx hip hop scene and culture in the late 1970s. The Funky 4 + 1, Sha-Rock being the plus one, had their first significant hit with the 12-inch single "Rapping and Rocking the House" on Sugarhill Records (1979) as well as "That's the Joint" (1980) which both appeared on national television. As an early pioneer affiliated with the Zulu Nation, MC Sha-Rock inspired a style of rapping emulated and made notable by Run DMC called the "echo chamber". In 2010, Green published a book about her experiences titled “The Story of the Beginning and End of the First Hip Hop Female MC: Luminary Icon Sha-Rock.” She wrote this book about her life, and her impact that was felt in many aspects.

"Right Here" is the debut single by the American R&B; girl group SWV. It was released on August 20, 1992 as the lead single from their debut album It's About Time (1992), and charted on the Billboard charts as a double-A-side with "Downtown". A remixed version, referred to as "Right Here (Human Nature Remix)" and based around a sample of Michael Jackson's 1982 song "Human Nature", became a number-one R&B; single, selling 500,000 copies and earning a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. According to Billboard, in 1993, the song spent 22 weeks on the US Hot 100 (18 of which were also spent in the Mainstream Top 40) and from 1993-94 it spent 34 weeks on the R&B;/Hip-Hop Airplay, making it one of the most successful R&B; songs of 1993. The group revealed in a 2014 interview that they initially did not like Teddy Riley's “Human Nature” remix because they felt it was too boring and would not be a hit.

During her time on The Real World: Los Angeles, Roman formed her own R&B; girl group quartet which at first she called Reality and also Roman herself was one of the four members and the rapper of the group as well. There was also at least one song written for the group, possibly by Roman herself and during that same time, the group signed a record contract with Mercury Records, and the name of the song was "Prisoner Of Your Love" but the producer that worked with them was, from what Tami stated that he was very difficult to work with, to please, and hard to satisfy. In addition to that, the group ended their collaboration with him and the song never got recorded. In 1994 while still under contract with Mercury Records, Roman changed the group's name from Reality to Female and then the group was offered the opportunity to be one of the African-American girl groups in the song, Freedom for the motion picture soundtrack album, Panther.

The single became their first to reach the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, when it peaked at number 12. The single was also success on the Pop 100 chart, where it peaked at number 2, as well as the Hot R&B;/Hip- Hop Songs chart, reaching a peak of number 10 on that chart. The single also was a major hit in New Zealand, peaking at number 3 on the official singles chart. The song also climbed to the top 40 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, peaking at number 30 and 34 respectively. The song also charted in countries such as Australia, peaking at number 67, Germany, peaking at number 87, and France, reaching a peak of number 48. After the success of "Do It to It", their debut album was released on August 15, 2006 on Capitol Records and was named Unappreciated. It debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 selling 91,000 copies making it one of only a few R&B; girl group projects to hit the top five on the chart in almost a year.
