Apart from acting, Rathnayake is a popular announcer in outdoor musical stage as well as television. His first television hosting was for "Shanida Wasanawa" lottery along with popular singer and announcer Charitha Priyadarshani. Since then, he worked as the announcer in many television programs such as "Ayubowan", "Shanida Ayubowan" and lottery programs. He was the announcer when LTTE made a bomb blast to assassinate Gamini Dissanayake in 1994.

He also made cover titles, film catalogs and movie backgrounds for Amaranath Jayathilake's "Chithrapata Adyanaya" and Ajantha Ranasinghe's "Thivanka Rekha". Later he worked as a dubbing artist for many film characters. In 1965, he acted in the film Sweep Ticket and then in 1979 in the film Handaya. As a radio songwriter, he became very popular with the songs "Mahada Namathi Wana Bambara" by H.R. Jothipala, "Ruwan Thoran Thana" and "Mulu Loke Pura" by Christopher Paul, "Ayubowan Ayubowan" by G. S. B. Rani.

The bow and handshake are also used for both greeting and leave-taking. And in many south Asian countries like Sri Lanka and India, they put their arms together and place it near to heart which shows they are greeting from the bottom of the heart. In India they say "Namaste" and in Sri Lanka they say "Ayubowan" which means live longer.

He became a Grade Two announcer in 1974 and afterwards presented programmes such as Sonduru Sevana, Serisara Puvath Sangarawa and Shanida Sadaya on Radio Ceylon's successor Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). He later joined the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, presenting programmes such as Anduna, Sanidtha Ayubowan and Sampath Rekha (National Lotteries Board). De Alwis was a prolific lyricist, writing hundreds of songs. He wrote his first song, Hada Puda Asune Senehasa Bendune, in 1969 for Rupa Indumathi and Malkanthi Nandasiri.

In Sinhalese, "Ayubowan", meaning, "may you live longer", is used. The gesture is commonly used to greet people in India. Although not used as a greeting gesture, similar gestures (the clasping of hands at the stomach, chest or chin) are known in the Philippines to convey heartfelt gratitude to a helper or benefactor, especially if that benefactor's social status is above that of the one who is assisted. This has its origins in the pre-Hispanic and pre-Islamic Hindu-Buddhist beliefs and customs of the area.

He was a freelance broadcaster at Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and had done a number of commercial programs such as 'Dasa Pibidena Gayaka Parapura', 'Guruge Menik Wasana Udawa', 'Jayanithyakalyani Vinoda Mela', 'Ov Ne Be', 'Winadiyak Pamanai', 'Mahaweliyen Deyata Pidena Mal', 'Helence Mangala Seenu', 'Tea Shakthi' etc. Apart from that he had acted in various radio-dramas such as 'Kele Mal', 'Muwanpelessa' etc. 'Api Dennai Palu Lowai' the famous radio detective series in the 80s was written and acted by him. He had also done several television programs as well such as 'Shanida Ayubowan', 'Shanida Wasanawa Ganitha Getaluwa' etc.

After leaving school, Srimath started his career as a novice announcer at Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and has been trained by many qualified media personnel such as H. M. Gunasekera, Cyril Rajapakse, Lalith S. Maithreepala and Palitha Perera. Radio Later he went on handling many programmes such as Wasantha Sandella, Saraswathie Mandapaya etc. with Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Television Srimath has been a Television presenter for many programmes such as Ayubowan, Subha Udesanak, Eheta Kanata and Gee Hatha on Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Kalarasanga, Komala Reka, and Suraksha Sandella on ITN, Sawanata Geemadu on TNL TV, Alakamandawa on MTV Channel.

Senesh started his media career as a television program producer at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (National television) in 1991 as a teenage school leaver. Senesh produced musicals, talk shows, sports coverage, documentaries, entertainment and television magazine programs such as The News Station, Udaa Vikashaya, Rasa Kalasa, Visi Ekveni Peya and a current affairs magazine program called 9.05. Senesh was one of the pioneer music video directors in Sri Lanka, with his musical/magazine program called Yaathra(Voyage)(1995–1997). Senesh has also been a television presenter and a host since 1997 of television talk shows, entertainment and music programs such as Gee Hatha, Ayubowan, Rividina Sithumina, Rhythm Chat, Watts 33000.

A gesture known as the Añjali Mudrā is used as a sign of respect and greeting and involves a bow of varying degrees depending on whom one performs it to and hands pressed together generally at chest level. Practised throughout South Asia and Southeast Asia, the gesture is most commonly used in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Indonesia. Gestures across the region are known by different names such as the wai in Thailand, sampeah in Cambodia and Laos, sembah in Indonesia, namaste in India and Nepal, and in Sri Lanka the gesture is used as a greeting with the word "Ayubowan".
