Newcomb Sr. was president of Newcomb-Endicott up until the time of his death in late 1915, but had abandoned an active role in the business due to failing health. also enjoyed automobiling. He was a Republican and a Universalist. Known for his philanthropic work, he was a member of the board of several charities and was active in politics although he never ran for elected office.

Emily and Sumner were grand-nieces and grand-nephews of Caroline Astor. McVickar died of pleurisy on July 4, 1905 at his father-in-law's residence, Asher House, in Southampton, New York. He contracted pleurisy "while he was automobiling in Europe" six weeks earlier. His widow remarried to Theron Roundell Strong, a nephew of mayor William L. Strong, in 1918 and later died at her residence in the Carlyle Hotel in December 1955.

In 1899 (Brigham Young died in 1877, so the 1899 recommendation would be difficult), at the recommendation of Brigham Young, Ricks and others in the community began constructing a road to Bear Lake Valley. The road to Ricks Spring was the first section to be completed before winter. Within a decade, the area became a popular excursion point for camping and automobiling. The road is now part of the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway, part of US Route 89.

As described in a film magazine, Nenette Bisson (Myers), an adventurous French girl, is injured while automobiling and taken to the Kendall hospital, where she becomes infatuated with the young physician David Kendall (August). Kendall, believing all women frivolous, pays little attention to Nenette. War breaks out and Kendall goes to Europe to offer aid to the suffering. Nenette, disowned by her father who runs a small cafe in the Latin quarter of New York City after her name becomes involved in a Broadway scandal, becomes a stage favorite but her attempts to win her father's forgiveness are futile.

Since the pilot of the Olmsted plane would be surrounded by crushable laminated wood structures, these structures would absorb much of the blow in case of a crash. By the additional incorporation of “inherent stability” in flight as well as “around the stall” and “special landing gear” for nose-first landing, Olmsted wished to make “aeroplaning as safe and feasible as automobiling”. The prototype plane which Charles Olmsted designed in 1910 for the Buffalo-Pitts-Olmsted Syndicate has raked-back infinitely-variable-camber high-aspect-ratio wings, identical in shape to those of the 1935 DC-3. It also has retractable nose-first landing gear, an elevated high-aspect-ratio T-shaped tail section, and a gyroscopically-stable air-cooled Gnome engine rotating in the direction of travel.

Explosion of a Motor Car (AKA: The Delights of Automobiling) is a 1900 British short black-and-white silent comedy film, directed by Cecil M. Hepworth, featuring an exploding automobile scattering the body parts of its driver and passenger. "One of the most memorable of early British trick films" according to Michael Brooke of BFI Screenonline, "was one of the first films to play with the laws of physics for comic effect." It features one of the earliest known uses in a British film of the stop trick technique discovered by French filmmaker Georges Méliès in 1896, and also includes one of the earliest film uses of comedy delay - later to be widely used as a convention in animated films - where objects take much longer to fall to the ground than they would do in reality. It is included in the BFI DVD Early Cinema: Primitives and Pioneers and a clip is featured in Paul Merton's interactive guide to early British silent comedy How They Laughed on the BFI website.
