Fish species that are present in the region are Atlantic horse mackerel, Spanish toohtcarp, gilt-head bream, greater amberjack, sand steenbras and flathead grey mullet.

Pseudaxine trachuri was first described and illustrated based on specimens from the gills of the Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus (Carangidae) (referred to as Caranx trachurus in the original description) off Genova, Italy. Pseudaxine trachuri was designated the type species of the genus.

Trachurus capensis is considered to be a subspecies of the Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) by some authorities but it is thought that there is no adequate series of this specimens of these taxa along the coast of Africa available to confirm the validity of this taxon.

Fans of Tenerife are called Chicharreros because in early days, the inhabitants of a small fishing village called Santa Cruz (later the capital of Tenerife) consumed "chicharros" (Atlantic horse mackerel) as a main part of their diet. Other inhabitants of Tenerife and the Canary Islands used the moniker as a pejorative name, but finally the inhabitants of Santa Cruz accepted it affectionately.

Other products are atlantic horse mackerel, atlantic mackerel fillets, and roe from atlantic herring and capelin. Almost entire production is for export and the most important markets are Japan, Russia, Ukraine and Germany. In 2009, Marine Stewardship Council certification was awarded to Norway Pelagic for its Chain of Custody Standards. The certified fisheries are Norwegian Spring Spawning Herring, the North Sea Herring and the North East Atlantic Mackerel.

In order to facilitate even cooking, the ingredient is cut into small, roughly uniform shapes. It is accessed by a roadway that winds down to fajã, to a platform with limited parking. From this point the homes and coastal area reachable by foot or by small single-engine vehicles. The port is used for small-scale fishing, from along the coast and in the channel, which includes the capture of Gadiformes such as Atlantic horse mackerel. The more frequent migratory and marine birds in the fajã include: sea-gulls, terns, shearwaters, kites, blackbirds and even wild ducks, as well as occasionally sandpipers.
