The planet, known as Ross 128b, completes an orbit of its star, Ross 128, about once every 10 days, according to new research published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
"We think that feedback keeps galaxies from becoming too large," co-author Marie Machacek, a researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, in Massachusetts, said in the statement.
By extrapolation, they estimated the stream could contain at least 4,000 stars and be at least 1,300 light-years long, according to the paper published in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

A team led by Silvia Belladitta, a graduate student at the University of Insubria in Italy, announced the discovery of the blazar on Friday in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

"This was a very big surprise," Rennan Barkana, author of the new paper in Nature and head of the Department of Astrophysics School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University, told Gizmodo.

Science writes that the experiment is important as "China's first mission dedicated to astrophysics" and "shows that the country is set to become a force in space science," paraphrasing Physicist David Spergel at Princeton.
The Max Planck Society advised Kauffmann against it and instead issued a statement in which the organization spoke on behalf of both the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics as well as the professor herself.

"What is particularly annoying about this satellite is that it is designed to be visually bright and has no other purpose," Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told Gizmodo.
"These objects look like gas and behave like stars," said Andrea Ghez, study author, director of the UCLA Galactic Center Group and the university's Lauren B. Leichtman and Arthur E. Levine Professor of Astrophysics.
A forthcoming paper about the discovery, co-authored by Cukier, is due out soon from the journal Earth and Planetary Astrophysics (an unpublished version of the article is available on the preprint server arXiv).
However, Alan Duffy, a research fellow in the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, said that China's secrecy around the space mission made the risks difficult to assess.
At 30, after completing his PhD in astrophysics and briefly running a start-up, Mahadevan and his wife sold all their belongings and packed their bags for a 12-month around-the-world trip.
