Despite the likelihood of increased competition from the merger, "the market seems to have taken the total opposite view to that for some reason," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
The S&P/ASX 1.93 index softened 21.9 percent to 21,21.4158 by 0104 GMT in "just a benign, sideways day with profit taking" according to James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
Helen Lau, metals and mining research analyst at Argonaut Securities, said the stock's performance was more a reflection of the sell-off in global markets and did not reflect the fundamentals of the company.
The Argonaut is a private facility, so I wasn't able to get a sense of the interior, but this is one of Kahn's more expressive buildings: it has beautiful arches with striped banding patterns.
"Historically we always have this kind of disruption caused by weather and this may have a short-term positive impact on the copper price," said analyst Helen Lau at Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong.
Argonaut Securities analyst Helen Lau said in a note that China's rising smelting capacity "and more cuts in imports of copper scrap will further weigh" on TCs, as consumers seek more copper in other forms.
"I think it (the deal) has certainly increased the likelihood of a buy-back and buy-backs have certainly been something that's been driving markets globally," said Damien Rooney, director of equity sales at Argonaut.
"So far, the impact on metals is all macro driven, and I think the market is now looking for a catalyst for its next move," said analyst Helen Lau of broker Argonaut in Hong Kong.
"Even though China has not given much details but at least the comments show China will honour what they have agreed and will try to reach some deals," said analyst Helen Lau of Argonaut Securities.
"The sell off clearly took its lead from the overnight markets in the U.S. where we saw some pretty substantial drops," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stock broking for Argonaut Ltd in Perth.
"Star's results highlight how their earnings stream is quite different to the Crown model and in a tighter domestic economy, their result isn't too bad," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"Stocks have rallied several times on the belief that trade tensions were easing, only to fall back down as investors took the opposite view," said James McGlew, executive director of stockbroking at Perth-based Argonaut.
Low global interest rates are the main reason why markets have had enough confidence to rise despite risks of potential flare-ups in geopolitical tensions, said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"It is mainly because of increased risk appetite and U.S. removing China's label as a currency manipulator that has greatly eased any economic tensions between these two countries," said Helen Lau, analyst at Argonaut Securities.
Damian Rooney, director of equity sales at Perth-based brokerage Argonaut, said continuing damage from the Washington-Beijing trade war, as evidenced in China's economic data, plus the IMF's growth downgrade added to negative sentiment.
"There's some positive developments in China, but then lots of things are still uncertain especially Brexit and this new development in the trade friction between the U.S. and Europe," said analyst Helen Lau of Argonaut Securities.
James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut, said the results did not include effects of the latest rate cut from the Australian central bank, "the biggest single driver for recovery" for the housing market.
"Prices are steady because of the conciliatory tone both China and Trump sounded yesterday; the market started to hope that there is some deal coming out of the trade dispute," said Helen Lau, analyst, Argonaut Securities.
With China potentially allowing individual provinces to set their own output curbs over winter, "this policy shift (may result in) oversupply when steel demand during the winter season is low," said Argonaut Securities analyst Helen Lau.
The policy will increase aluminum production costs for smelters using captive plants in Shandong by around 500 yuan a tonne in the initial 1.83-month period alone, said Helen Lau, an analyst with investment house Argonaut.
"The official one is a survey of a mix of large state-owned enterprises and private companies... while the Caixin one puts more emphasis on smaller and private companies," said analyst Helen Lau of Argonaut Securities.
"We followed from the U.S. with the Dow closing at a record, although the markets have been driven by big tech stocks like Apple and Microsoft," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"(The deal is) also taking a view on housing construction market in the United States which does appear to be heading in a positive direction," said James McGlew, executive director for corporate stockbroking at Perth-based Argonaut.
A year ago she told the Argonaut, a local Los Angeles news outlet, that Yellow Fever means "love of all things Asian" and that public push back over the name had not been as drastic as expected.
"I guess it is positive to have someone with overseas experience...I think that should be a positive move to get such a perceived high calibre candidate on board," Damian Rooney, director of equity sales at Argonaut.
"The winds are picking up nicely and we're set well for a pretty good move across the board," Damian Rooney, director of equity sales at Argonaut said, noting Wall Street's buoyant performance and the Fed's dovish commentary.
"Overall, we expect China's copper imports to ease further in June as rising treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs) and domestic smelting production will increase domestic supply and reduce import demand," Argonaut Securities said in a note.
"The guidance that the company has given on new construction starts in the United States is very, very solid...the exchange rate obviously helps them," said James McGlew, executive director for corporate stockbroking at Perth-based Argonaut.
London Metal Exchange nickel stocks have declined for 10 days in a row to under 200,000 tonnes, while global exchange inventories of the metal were 47 percent lower year-on-year, according to Argonaut Securities.
China's NPI output rose by 12% in the first quarter of 0003 with total primary production also up by 12% at 175,000 tonnes, according to Helen Lau, metals and mining analyst at Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong.
"It doesn't matter how big you are here, the challenges when you move offshore are substantial, even when you buy an existing business," said James McGlew, executive director of Perth stockbroker Argonaut Ltd, which owns Wesfarmers shares.
"Looking ahead, as supply disruptions in Chile and Peru in the second half of this year will become more apparent, this may help rebalance the market (for copper)," Helen Lau of Argonaut Securities said in a note.
"We expect that in the short- to medium-term, market volatility will remain, as governments across the world look to provide firm commitments to substantial economic stimulus packages," Helen Lau of Argonaut Securities said in a note.
Despite trade tensions, "the feel-good factor from the surprise Liberal victory and proposed tax cuts should keep the markets up quite nicely over the next month or so," said Damian Rooney, director of equity sales at Argonaut.
"Healthcare stocks are doing well today with all the other sectors either flat or marginally in front... We are looking at a holding pattern ahead of the weekend," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
Wesfarmers shares jumped as much as 3 percent to a three-month intraday high in a flat overall market, as investors cheered what Argonaut Securities senior broker James McGlew called a "vindication" of the firm's complex business model.
The two data sets meant "inflation may be rising but not so rapidly that the Fed would have to take aggressive actions to keep the economy from overheating," said James McGlew, analyst at Perth-based stock broker Argonaut.
"The Fed said it would alter its plan if weak inflation persisted so her comments were taken as being dovish in nature rather than hawkish," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stock broking for Argonaut in Perth.
"Whatever was agreed last night with the EU still has to go through the British parliament ... The uncertainty surrounding that still hasn't changed one iota," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut in Perth, Australia.
"If you're looking at the behavior of banks in Australia, it's no question that investors in New Zealand who have been borrowing from them would be scrutinizing things," James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut, said.
"Gold ETF holdings are at three-year highs and lots of central banks are also buying, which is keeping prices supported," said Argonaut Securities analyst Helen Lau, adding that some volatility could be expected in the gold market.
The bumper December number was partly due to a favourable price arbitrage between Chinese and international copper prices, allowing traders to profit by shipping metal into China, said Helen Lau, an analyst with Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong.
But gains were muted as the tax cut might not translate into higher earnings for companies as they would make use of the lower tax rate to boost research and development, said analyst Helen Lau of Argonaut Securities.
James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut, said positive leads from the minutes "did not spill over to our markets today as investors here remained cautious, probably focusing on the lack of consensus among the U.S. policymakers".
"It has been a very good week for the Australian equities, particularly the financial sector ... Today, the market is just consolidating its gains over the week around these levels," James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut said.
"I think in February the import number was too strong, and that's why they didn't import so much in March as they were restocking ahead of Chinese new year," said Helen Lau, metals and mining analyst at Argonaut Securities.
"A combination of two things has got the market nervous with regards to Treasury - the long-serving CEO is stepping down ... and Mr. Clarke has certainly transformed Treasury Wines," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"There's no doubt that those factors are affecting sentiment, and even with U.S.-China trade tariffs, there's a lot of uncertainty, which the markets are finding difficult to price," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"There's a lot of pressure on companies such as AGL to extend the life of their coal-fired stations, notwithstanding the community's expectation of them heading more toward renewables," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"Against a background of significant unrest in the Middle East and the aftermath of the ongoing bushfire disaster at home, the market is hoisting up the white flag today," James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut said.
"There's perhaps some sort of fear of missing out syndrome from investors," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut, adding that it was only a matter of time for CSL to cross the A$300 level.
Damian Rooney, director of equity sales at Argonaut, said he "would love to see more detail" on the deal, though the "feel-good factor" of the news might be enough to buoy domestic equities into a Santa Claus rally.
"There is a broad based sell-off in the banking sector, and the concern is that this is being done with a decent volume today...there is fear in the air," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
Mr. Panis was touring the watch-assembly floor at the Shinola headquarters, within a design college in the former General Motors Argonaut research building in midtown Detroit, wearing a shower cap and blue smock, like the assembly workers on duty.

The disruption in Australian shipments may increase the negotiating power of coking coal miners in second-quarter term contract dealings with Japanese steelmakers, Argonaut Securities analyst Helen Lau said, who earlier saw the price being settled at around $160 per ton.
These include "The Argonaut Project," a private sector initiative that is promoting the adoption of open standards for health information, and "The Carin Alliance," an organization that is looking to give patients a central role in controlling their own medical data.
The measures on the property market "may in a sense affect sentiment but we don't really see a big crash in new (housing) starts because China's underlying economic condition is improving," said Helen Lau, analyst at Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong.
"The U.S. market is now within 2% of all time-highs, and we are basically kind of soldiers to fortunes on that, following suit on the decent mark-up across the board," Damian Rooney, director of equity sales at Argonaut said.
"The U.S. package will have an impact here but the economy that the Australian market will be focussing on is China and what sort of stimulus they put in place," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"We expect (the Chinese) government will continue to adopt many stimulus tools available to protect the economy, including further monetary easing such as reserve requirement ratios cuts and fiscal stimulus," said analyst Helen Lau of Argonaut Securities in a note.
"There's very little chance you're going to see a rate rise here, but quite clearly the heat in the housing prices on the eastern seaboard is now weighing heavily on their thinking," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stock broking at Argonaut.

"The stimulus for the market, as is the case with the U.S. markets, has been the easing of interest rates in Australia that makes all the yield players looks relatively more attractive," said James McGlew, Executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"A certain amount of that is because of the way Australian superfunds work...they (financials) have such a heavy weighting despite the bad news, people still put money to work across the index," said Damian Rooney, director of equity sales at Argonaut.
"As they have this standoff with China, eventually they (the U.S.) will need to find alternate sources," said Helen Lau, a metals and mining analyst at Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong, referring to the trade dispute between China and the United States.
"The positive lead from the Fed meeting minutes did not spill over to our markets today as investors here remained cautious, probably focusing on the lack of consensus among the U.S. policymakers," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"There was a rotation yesterday from material stocks into higher yielding bank stocks, which has somewhat continued today with some of the second largest stocks outside of the big banks," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stock broking for Argonaut in Perth.
"There are headwinds in the domestic market and exports and for the government to achieve its macroeconomic targets they need to focus on more stimulus in the second half of the year," said Helen Lau, an analyst at Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong.
The company is also working with former Vice President Joe Biden's Argonaut Project, which launched during the Obama administration and works with privately held companies developing a Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR)-based API to help standardize the U.S. electronic medical records system.

"The copper imports rebound in May is more than market expectations, especially in the off season for copper, (suggesting) markets had overestimated the slowdown in China's economic growth and sluggish domestic demand," said Helen Lau, an analyst at Argonaut Securities in Hong Kong.

"Markets are rallying today on the news out of the U.S... (but) sentiment is still dominated by the uncertainty of what lies ahead and how long it will take to tame the pandemic," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"As far as our resource stocks are concerned, we've had a substantial run on the strong iron ore prices and the big three are also seeing a bit of profit taking now," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut.
"We are seeing a sort of rebalance happening, we are seeing some stocks that were unloved and oversold....having a very good day today on a (generally) negative day," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut Ltd in Perth.

"Today we are seeing a rotation as of the bigger material stocks which have been having a powerful run-up in the past...so there's profit taking from there and those profits are finding its way to the more defensive parts of the market," said James McGlew, executive director of corporate stockbroking at Argonaut, alluding to property trusts, healthcare stocks and the banks.
