The former are a pair of faceless androids whose humanity is only evident through their music; the other is a fictional world in which computerized avatars turn out to be real people, or at least something close to that.
Along with some gorgeous visuals and a few freaky-ass androids with glowing eyes, the trailer flaunts the series' massively star-studded cast, featuring everyone from Bryan Cranston to Steve Buscemi to Anna Paquin to Janelle Monáe, and more.
To sidestep questions about her gender presentation and romantic attachments, Janelle Monáe debuted as an android in her first video, "Many Moons," in 2008, and maintained the persona for a decade: She was an android, and she only dated other androids.
It was a combat training module that centered on the game's newly revealed sixth hero Ms. Marvel; it took off the training wheels and gave me free control over the stretching hero to bash my way through an army of androids.
The androids are trapped in a Black Mirror-esque cycle — they struggle to break out of their superimposed system of conformity, briefly grasp their true identities, and then they're inevitably stuffed back into their blank-faced roles as machines of Metropolis.

Google's security team is probably the best on the block, and its Pixel phones are more secure than other Androids, partly because they get the latest updates first, partly because they're free of possibly vulnerable or even malicious pre-installed bloatware.
Down past the neon billboards, down past the space ships leaving the dismal planet Earth for brighter and more luxurious off-world colonies, down into the winding and narrow alleys where Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) spends his days hunting down androids.

The Cylons were an enemy that posed an existential threat to humans, but rather than the obviously robotic robots of the original series, they had evolved into humanlike androids who could live among us and carry out acts of war.
Despite warnings from leading technologists and scientists—such as Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates—that artificial intelligence and robots could pose a greater risk to humanity than nuclear weapons, humans keep on keepin' on with developing AI and androids.
Paranoid Androids: • There are no hard conclusions to be drawn from the shot of the Man in Black carving into his own arm, but Reddit posters have been batting around the Man-in-Black-as-host theory for quite some time.
By constantly sharing our thoughts and interacting with those of others online, we have provided valuable data for our malicious dark doubles, who look like us, talk like us, and now even have emotional false memories like the androids of Blade Runner.

HBO has pulled out all the stops to push the show's second season, including buying its first Super Bowl ad in decades and building an entire Westworld-inspired town in Texas populated with actors playing androids during the South by Southwest film festival.
Even if you set aside the fact that some of these situations make no sense (if so many androids are caregivers, why wouldn't they be allowed to ride with their owners on public transportation?) these 1:1 equivalences are uncomfortable and lazy.
The idea of androids and AI gaining sentience and figuring out how to exist in human society is a fascinating subject, one that can touch on ideas about the nature of life and changes to social structures that will ensue, and much more.
If Google doesn't step up and fix this, a gigantic segment of the population might decide that we're just, you know, not genetically predisposed to enjoy using Gmail or that Androids simply don't feel good in our tiny little lady hands. Harumph.
Those virtualized cars running in those virtualized cities on virtualized roads are all running virtualized versions of Nvidia's Drive in-car autonomous supercomputer platform — in other words, androids really do dream of electric sheep, but each of those sheep are self-driving cars.
For the last six years, the NSO Group's main product, a tracking system called Pegasus, has been used by a growing number of government agencies to target a range of smartphones — including iPhones, Androids, and BlackBerry and Symbian systems — without leaving a trace.

Ridley Scott sets new sci-fi series, Raised by Wolves, at HBO Max: Raised by Wolves, a serialized sci-fi series from master storyteller and filmmaker Ridley Scott, centers on two androids who have to deal with raising human children on a mysterious planet.
The other is that the 106 million monthly listeners that SiriusXM and Pandora will have when the deal closes is the first clear evidence that the streaming market will not end up in a two-horse race like PCs and Macs or iPhones and Androids.
A few years ago San Francisco startup Angaza created Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) software for Androids, which allowed someone to buy into a solar device, like a lantern, pay it off incrementally, and thus get off using polluting fossil fuels for lighting and power.
Detroit looks a lot stronger of narrative, its "neo-noir thriller"–styled story set in a near future—with "no flying cars or laser guns," says QD co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière—where androids have filled many public sector positions, like nurses and transit operatives.
On Westworld, some humanoid androids are catching glimpses of a horrifying reality behind their artificial self-perception—that they, the robot "park hosts," were created to be fucked and killed by rich assholes who go to Westworld to play cowboy for a few days.
Countless other acts of violence play out across the titular theme park, populated by androids programmed to follow certain story lines and interact with the human "guests," each of whom have paid $40,000 per day to visit the dusty simulation of an American frontier town.
Dolores and the other hosts started a bloody revolt against their human oppressors in last season's finale, and "Westworld" has now shifted into a wide-open space where the androids are getting their first taste of freedom but discovering a new set of challenges.
Paranoid androids: • The opening scene revisits the conversation between Dolores and Bernard, in which Bernard confesses to being "frightened" of what she might become, but extends it long enough to reveal that it's Dolores putting Bernard through the paces — not the other way around.
The team used an fMRI machine to scan the brains of 20 people in their twenties and thirties as they watched separate videos of one of Ishiguro's female androids, the same android with its machinery revealed, and the living human that the android was modeled after.
While it may be easy to imagine what might be deemed a luxury in a dystopian future—think perhaps pets in Philip K Dick's Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep or privacy in Orwell's 1984—it's harder to imagine what could be luxurious in a perfect society.
A co-production of the UK's Channel 4 and the US cable channel AMC, Humans is set in a near future where strikingly realistic-looking androids called synths are increasingly being called on to perform menial or degrading work, from home care to housekeeping to prostitution.
When he was asked to write the script he was more interested in paying tribute to the occult sensibilities of The Wicker Man, which is how the third Halloween movie ended up having nothing to do with Michael Myers and everything to do with Pagan androids.
So that's kind of like what we see with Dolores and the other androids, they're on these loops going about their day, and the human players—the human park visitors—are there to mess up their storylines and get involved in ways that they see fit.
Westworld's use of "No Surprises" in its second episode is much more low-key, with the self-playing honky-tonk piano in the park's saloon plinking out the signature riff in the background as the existential musings and malfunctions of androids play out on the main stage.
At E3, we had the chance to watch a behind-closed-doors presentation that walked through scene where android abolitionist Markus (played by Jesse Williams) breaks dozens of other androids out of store-front captivity and then led a protest filled "riot" in the empty city streets.
A few years ago, Google acquired almost a dozen robotic companies, including Boston Dynamics, which was already well known among robot enthusiasts and the mainstream media for a series of creepy and fascinating robot experiments featuring fast-running cheetah robot, lumbering Big Dog robots and walking androids.
And it makes sense, too: Given the ability to create androids that can pass as human beings — who might, in fact, have more physical, emotional and intellectual potential than their flesh-and-blood counterparts — an expensive theme park seems like an awfully limited application of the technology.
I'm not sure it had much to say beyond 'do androids dream of electric sheep?' but I'm glad the film was made, and the sheer fortitude that went into rendering an original visual depiction of a collapsing, replicant-occupied LA, has plenty to forcefully impart about the future.
When the show left off, Dolores had murdered Robert Ford in the midst of the Westworld creator's presentation for a narrative called "Journey into Night," and an army of pissed-off androids in the woods were closing in on Delos executive director Charlotte Hale and her fellow execs.

The real reason that Anthony Hopkins's evil creator, Dr. Robert Ford, invented the androids and trapped them all in their ongoing existential nightmare was to try to develop a version of humanity that could achieve immortality by living on after death in the body of an android host hybrid.
His aim was to capture a phenomenon called "the uncanny valley," which makes robots seem creepier as they become more humanlike, but when photographer and non-practicing MD Max Aguilera-Hellweg set out to take portraits of androids for his new book Humanoid, he simply couldn't find it.
But I've always been fascinated with this sort of Simakian scenario where human life is going to become this precious thing where these androids will be fighting for the last human baby on Earth to survive and the dogs will be telling stories of the educated fools around a campfire.
Crichton never invited us to think of the androids as anything more than exceptionally lifelike machines: When Yul Brynner's robotic gunslinger shorts out and starts killing the guests in the original film, he's like an early model of Arnold Schwarzenegger in "The Terminator," complete with robot point-of-view shots.
Whether or not Detroit succeeds or fails at making its points, the fact remains that it is trying to make some sort of gesture toward androids being a stand-in for African-American oppression—this much is clear in the framing of the game in trailers and pre-release footage.
Paranoid Androids • A note on sex and nudity in "Westworld": Last week's episode got a lot of media attention for the big orgy set-piece in Pariah, but I wound up addressing it lightly, because William and Dolores's lack of interest in participating seemed much more notable than the event itself.
The sequel is directed by recent sci-fi champ Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario) and produced by original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott, who's been dining out for years on Blade Runner's central unanswered mystery: Is Harrison Ford's bounty hunter Rick Deckard one of the androids (known as replicants) he's supposed to track down?
At first glance, Quantic Dream's Detroit: Become Human, a game set in a near-future Detroit, following three storylines framed by a burgeoning revolution of newly conscious androids, seems interested in addressing the implications of setting its game in a city that has gone through so much technological and labor-related upheaval.
But most sci-fi nonhumans tend to be human in appearance, resembling us in size, anatomy and general disposition, and departing from us only in one or two highlighted traits: the ears and super-rationality of the Vulcans in "Star Trek," say, or the supposed lack of empathy in Philip K. Dick's androids.
Technically a sequel to a 220 Drakengard spinoff, Nier: Automata mixes the best-in-class action game chops of developer Platinum Games with an off-the-wall, post-apocalyptic narrative featuring killer robots, super-powered androids, and an overall sci-fi tone that would feel familiar only to the most diehard of anime fans.
HBO also went to the SXSW festival in Austin last year to promote season 2 with a full re-creation of the Old West town Sweetwater, equipped with dozens of actors playing scripted androids while regular conference participants got to play the part of visiting guests in an elaborate and somewhat messy meta affair.
Like 40 percent of Americans, Conway and the people he meets—a TV repairwoman, two self-liberated androids, a professional theremin player, and a little boy whose brother is a giant eagle—are all teetering on the edge of financial ruin, just one accident or bad day away from toppling over into crushing debt.
You're spending thousands or millions on products – a CRM system, a field operations app, a system to keep your life-like humanoid androids from killing park guests in your Wild West-themed adventure park – and none of these systems talk to each other, especially the ones that keep your robots from falling in love with the guests.
So in order to further "connect the world" and "give everyone a voice," the billionaire Facebook founder will traverse our great nation via car, having his own personal On The Road as he "stops in small towns and universities," meeting with a range of real live people and the very humanlike androids I imagine Facebook employs.
The Red Strings Club is a cyberpunk adventure game (out today on Steam) that trades in all manner of genre tropes: There are massive corporations to deal with, transhumanism to wrap your unenhanced brain around, sentient androids who seek to understand humanity, and a sleek bar with retro stylings (including a fan and an old piano).
Two days after Nintendo and Nianti Labs released Pokémon GO—a mobile game for iPhones and Androids that allows users to catch virtual Pokémon out in the real world—it was already installed on more US Android phones than the popular dating app Tinder, adding a reported $9 billion worth of market value to the company.
One of the opening shots in the first trailer for Blade Runner: 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic, shows something that the original film never dared to: the "birth" of a replicant, the androids that the film's protagonist, played by Ryan Gosling, is tasked with hunting and killing when they go rogue.
Their story works not necessarily because of any connection to androids, but because it has all the makings of good drama: a new guy who wants to please his partner, but who also has personal motives that stand in the way of their friendship (see: any romantic comedy of the late nineties; see also: The Fast and The Furious).
After an opening image of the Westworld saloon's now-iconic piano splattered in blood like a House remake, we see androids Dolores and Teddy slaughtering humans on horseback, Thandie Newton's Maeve surveying the employee corpses she mowed down during her big escape, and Ed Harris's Man in Black waking up after taking a gunshot to the chest.
That it does this even as it ignores the ways humanity itself has become a kind of god to its own creations, androids like David and Walter (the new robot Fassbender plays in Covenant — yes, the movie has two Michael Fassbenders, and they kiss), is simultaneously the most fascinating and most frustrating thing about these films.
At the reception desk of a robot-staffed hotel in Japan, sharp-fanged, hairy-chested dinosaurs wearing bellhop hats and bow ties poise their talons at the keyboard; at a pizza restaurant in Multan, Pakistan, bosomy figures on wheels, accessorized with scarves around their necks, deliver food to your table; at a gentlemen's club in Las Vegas, androids in garters perform pole dances.
Instead, massive portraits of algorithmically generated criminals (think: Do androids dream of Florida State mugshots?) hang from the back walls while an aggressive onslaught of hypercolored canvases, spray-painted by automated drones, corral you into an uncanny VR experience—download the Seefoam mobile app for an on-the-go taste—and Ben Jones's OutRun-on-acid projection room, Road Trip II.
The listings took the reader to an alternate reality, in which the latent prurience and sadism of the nation's favorite shows were laid bare: 1:20083 — Boom Goes Lovergirl Hilarious hidden-camera action as insular nerds spend weeks being led up the garden path by sophisticated androids posing as attractive women, secretly wired to explode as soon as the word "love" is spoken.
Louie: So, Facebook, we pretty much just use as for ... Because I'm on the lacrosse team and we use it as a group chat because some people have Androids and they're not fun to have in text group chats because they kind of ruin it, like making every message green and you can't add or kick out ... You can't add people.
Drawing from the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name and premiering this Sunday at 9 PM, the show chronicles a gigantic Western-themed amusement park that's less Six Flags and more Red Dead Redemption: Androids dressed up in dusty garb are the main attraction, and you can do anything you want with them—befriend them, drink with them, fuck them, even kill them.
"Writing in about 700 BC, Homer described gates of heaven that opened and closed automatically to admit the gods' chariots; a fleet of driverless three-wheeled carts that delivered nectar and ambrosia to the god's banquets; a bank of automated bellows that adjusted their blasts as required; and the crew of golden female androids endowed with artificial intelligence to anticipate Hephaestus's every need," Mayor told me.
As Paul Gilroy notes in his essay "Sounds Authentic," it is "within the underground, alternative, public spaces constituted around an expressive culture" that black culture and music have historically flourished in the US. In Metropolis, music and dance are not only disruptive elements that can free the soul and speak truth to power; they're a summons to Cindi's fellow androids to rise up and claim their identities.
There was a period in my teens when I was really only interested in science fiction — my memories of my reading life in those years are a blur of androids and space stations — and then a period later when I was mostly interested in mainstream literary fiction, which is to say not particularly interested in horror or westerns or books set in outer space.
For a refresher, here is the Westworld season 2 Comic-Con teaser trailer from last year: And for those wanting to go way back, here is one of HBO's previous Super Bowl ads (which is strong on 20th-century high-concept Super Bowl commercial nostalgia but utterly lacking in killer robots): Westworld is set in an adult Wild West theme park in the future where guests roleplay fantasies with perfectly lifelike "hosts" (androids).
By about halfway through the third chapter, it was clear that the game's core cast was settling, and that you'd spend the bulk of this adventure with a disabled alcoholic past his prime, a working class Mexican woman, an orphaned child whose parents whose family had been made homeless during the subprime mortgage crisis, and a pair of androids designed for labor but who'd recreated themselves as stylish (and queer-coded) musicians.
We see this in the willing stockpiling of techie jargon into individual vocabularies (the Androids, the iPhones, the lesser-seen Surface Books); the new word coinages (blockchain), the new and expanding uses for existing words (a 'message' is a noun; 'message me' an imperative verb asking someone to send you an IM); the creative portmanteaus (glasshole is a particularly good one), the tech-obsessed idioms (I don't have bandwidth for that right now), and so on and on.
But we've been so programmed to understand the action in "Westworld" as predigested that the fight has no emotional impact: We can appreciate the horror embedded in Dolores's calculation that Major Craddock and his men are disposable in the grand scheme of things, but the moral stakes involved in actually witnessing these stranded Confederados get shot into Swiss cheese are very low: There's little indication that they have evolved anything like the kind of off-script consciousness possessed by hosts like Dolores and Bernard, and they're still androids after all.
