According to MacLeod tradition preserved in the Bannatyne manuscript, a force of MacDonalds led by Donald Gruamach MacDonald, landed on Skye at Loch Eynort, in about the year 1490. The MacDonalds proceeded to lay waste to the lands of Minginish, Bracadale, and Duirinish; and their forces got right up to the gates of Dunvegan Castle. The manuscript states that during this time, the chief of the MacLeods of Harris and Dunvegan, Alasdair Crotach, was on Harris; but that upon hearing the news of the MacDonald's encroachments, he proceeded with all haste to Skye. Another account of the battle was written in the book Conflicts of the Clans first published by the Foulis Press in 1764, written from a manuscript from the time of King James VI of Scotland (1566 - 1625): In this account battle is dated as taking place in 1438: > About the year of God 1438, there fell some variance betwixt the Keiths and > some others of the inhabitants of Caithness. The Keiths, mistrusting their > own forces, sent to Angus Mackay of Strathnaver (the son of Neil Wasse), > entreating him to come to their aid, whereunto he easily yielded; so Angus > Mackay, accompanied with John Mor MacIan-Riabhaich, went into Caithness with > a band of men, and invaded that country. Then did the inhabitants of > Caithness assemble in all haste, and met the Strathnaver men and the Keiths > at a place in Caithness called Blair-tannie. There ensued a cruel fight, > with slaughter on either side.

Having heard of this performance, Hugh Dowding, who was visiting the US at the time, pressed to see it for himself. On 29 April, after detecting a target aircraft at about Dowding once again asked Bowen about the minimum range, which they demonstrated to be about . Dowding was impressed, and before leaving to return to the UK, met with his counterpart, James E. Chaney, telling him about the system's performance and pressing for its immediate development for purchase by the RAF. Western Electric was given the contract to deliver five more units with all haste, under the name AI-10. One of these would be kept by Western Electric, another by Bell Telephone, one would replace the original lash-up in the B-18, another sent to the National Research Council (NRC) in Canada and the final one sent to the UK. Originally the UK copy was to be installed in either a Douglas A-20 Havoc or the RAF model known as the Boston, but neither of these aircraft were available.
