The move follows the city's legal victory last month against the soda industry, which tried to halt its effort to introduce warnings on advertisements for beverages with added sugar noting that they contribute to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay.
"The future in terms of the beverage industry in some parts of the world – yes, there'll be less added sugar, and yes, we think we need to push ahead with the smaller packages and reformulations and innovations," Quincey said.
While added sugar has been soundly found to have little to no health benefits, shellfish can be an asset to a balanced eating routine, and gluten isn't the root of all evil that so many believe it to be.

The American Heart Association recommends that people limit the amount of sugar and added sugar, such as high fructose corn syrup and honey, that they consume because too much of it can lead to obesity, heart disease and diabetes.
"Our study is the first to estimate the potential health and cost-saving benefits of the FDA's added sugar labeling," said study coauthor Renata Micha, a research associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.
The American Heart Association cites a study published in 2014 in saying that too much added sugar can increase risk of heart disease, though the authors of that study say the biological reasons for the link are not completely understood.
But considering how much added sugar is loaded into tons of products, consuming sweetened foods can easily add hundreds of calories to your diet — calories that you may not need and may end up as dangerous fat around your middle.
But according to the complaint, a 16-ounce bottle of Coke has 12 teaspoons of added sugar, a 15.2-ounce bottle of Minute Maid Cranberry Grape Juice drink has 13 teaspoons, and a 20-ounce bottle of Vitaminwater has eight teaspoons.
Sucking down a Double SmokeShack, a side of fries and a Peanut Butter Shake will set you back 2,240 calories, 55 grams of saturated fat, 3,170 milligrams of sodium and an estimated 42 grams of added sugar, according to the list.
Boston-based snacks maker Late July Snacks must face a proposed class action accusing it of hiding the fact that many of its products have added sugar by labeling it evaporated cane juice, a federal judge in San Francisco ruled.
" She says that food companies that try to hide how much added sugar is actually in a product aren't giving moms enough credit — that they couldn't handle knowing what went into their food — and that they're trying to "keep families ignorant.
Researchers, using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that from 2011 to 2016, 98 percent of toddlers ages 12 to 23 months consumed added sugar in fruit drinks, baked goods, candy and ready-to-eat cereals.
The FDA said it added the value after the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee issued a recommendation — now part of the final federal guidelines — that Americans limit their added sugar intake to less than 10 percent of their total daily calories.
A team of researchers at the University of North Carolina conducted a detailed survey of the packaged foods and drinks that are purchased in American grocery stores and found that 60 percent of them include some form of added sugar.

Health and nutrition experts have long advised against toddler milks because of their added sugar and salt and lower protein than ordinary cow's milk, which was recently reiterated in a consensus statement released by key US health and nutrition organizations.
Mr. Shaich noted, for instance, that a 20-ounce serving of Dr Pepper contains 64 grams of added sugar — or 14 grams more than the maximum amount recommended for daily consumption under the United States Dietary Guidelines for 2015-20.
The advice to cut back on sugar echoes similar advice from the World Health Organization and other groups, which have cited evidence that lowering added sugar could reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

They say that the agency needs to define what it means for a product to be low in added sugar — or "healthy" for that matter — to prevent companies from deceiving consumers into buying foods that are higher in sugar than they anticipate.
"It's not about being obese, it has to do with metabolic health," says Dr. Robert Lustig, professor of pediatric endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, and one of the first to raise the alarm about the health risks of added sugar.
To see how much added sugar babies and toddlers are currently consuming, Herrick's team analyzed 24-hour dietary data for a nationally-representative sample of 143,211 infants and toddlers whose parents participated in annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys in 2011-2016.
The maximum daily amounts of added sugar for a child aged four to six is five cubes (19 grams), six cubes (24 grams) for a seven to ten-year-old, and seven cubes or 30 grams for children aged 11 or over.

One change that could prove to be more important than redefining what it means to be "healthy" is forcing food companies to list the amount of added sugar in the nutrition facts panel of a product instead of just total sugar, according to Blake.
Their neighbors and family members listen when young activists remind them that soda and other sugary drinks are the No. 1 source of added sugar in the American diet and are driving an epidemic of type-II diabetes, heart and liver disease, and tooth decay.
Take, for instance, a 250 review of the literature on weight and sugar from the World Health Organization, which found that adults and children who consume less added sugar tend to weigh less, and that more sugar in the diet is associated with weight gain.
Today, the saturated fat warnings remain a cornerstone of the government's dietary guidelines, though in recent years the American Heart Association, the World Health Organization and other health authorities have also begun to warn that too much added sugar may increase cardiovascular disease risk.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that Americans take in no more than 10 percent of their calories per day from added sugar, but it's easy to exceed that goal when such a large portion of our diets rely on sugar-rich processed foods.

By 203, McDonald's aims to have at least half of the Happy Meals listed on its drive-thru, restaurant and digital menus around the world contain 600 calories or less, 10 percent of calories from saturated fat, 650 mg of sodium, and 10 percent of calories from added sugar.
Another advocacy group, the Nutrition Coalition, said that other than the new cap on added sugar, the guidelines mostly continued old advice to eat more whole grains, produce and vegetable oils while cutting back on foods that contain saturated fat such as butter, whole milk and red meat.
"Drinking one 12-ounce soft drink a day would exceed that amount – and while they are a major source, sugar-sweetened beverages contribute only about half of the added sugar consumed by Americans," said Jean Welsh of Emory University in Atlanta, who was not part of the new study.
A conscious diet that includes a diverse array of vegetables and whole grains with some dairy, eggs, chicken, fish, and even the occasional hamburger, while generally minimizing added sugar and processed foods, is much healthier than a vegan diet of super-processed veggie burgers, Oreos, and french fries.

The FDA says it worked with the public and companies in the food industry to develop the guidelines, but some in the food industry are poised to challenge the new recommendations, which come just weeks after the FDA introduced new nutrition facts labels that emphasize caloric content, added sugar, and serving sizes.

Although there is no single government-recommended daily value for sugar in the United States, the American Heart Association advises limiting added sugar to less than 6 teaspoons (or 25 grams) a day for women, 3 to 6 teaspoons (or 12 to 25 grams) each day for children, and 9 teaspoons (or 38 grams) a day for men.

That's the issue underlying giving consumers a real choice by providing them with information to make their own determination – whether it's the coming calorie information on menus or the revised Nutrition Facts Label for processed food that will disclose for the first time how much added sugar is in a product and how that compares to the maximum they should have on a daily basis.
