Victims of rape or sexual assault come from a wide range of genders, ages, sexual orientations, ethnicitities, geographical locations, cultures, and degrees of impairment or disability. Incidences of rape are classified into a number of categories, and they may describe the relationship of the perpetrator to the victim and the context of the sexual assault. Forced sexual activity can be committed over a long period of time with little to no physical injury.

In Harding's 2008 authorized biography, The Tonya Tapes (written by Lynda D. Even though date rape is considered a hurtful, destructive and life- changing experience, research done by Mufson and Kranz showed that lack of support is a factor that determines the fragmented recovery of victims. The Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) created the "No Means No" campaign in the 1990s to increase awareness by university students about "sexual assault, acquaintance rape, and dating violence" and decrease the incidence of these issues. The CFS developed a “No Means No” campaign that included research on sexual assault and producing and distributing buttons, stickers, posters and postcards with the slogan and other information. Lisak began his research in graduate school at Duke in the 1980s. He had noticed that most of the research on rape and sexual assault consisted of interviews with victims, who reported almost exclusively acquaintance rape rather than stranger rape, and studies on incarcerated rapists, who were almost exclusively stranger rapists. Lisak became interested in studying the rapists who committed the most common form of rape but who did not get caught and go to prison. Born September 23, 1975, in Cleveland, Ohio, Smith attended Hawken School through eighth grade, then graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1993. While at Shaker Heights High School, he wrote for the student newspaper, The Shakerite, for four years, as well as participating in the wrestling and track teams and the school's Minority Achievement Community program, where black upperclassmen with high grade point averages mentor black freshman and sophomore boys with lower GPAs. Smith did his undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a bachelor's degree in English in 1997. While in college, Smith wrote for the campus student newspaper, The Daily Pennsylvanian, and participated in Students Together Against Acquaintance Rape.

At the request of the Government of Ontario's Ontario Women's Directorate, Bourne developed curriculum resources to help teachers deal with violence in schools; developed materials to combat date and acquaintance rape on college and university campuses; and led an expert education panel which produced two handbooks and a DVD to help elementary teachers identify children in their classrooms who are or may be witnessing woman abuse at home. Teacher training based on the materials produced by this panel, entitled "Woman Abuse Affects Our Children" took place across Ontario including in many Aboriginal communities and under the auspices of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Ontario Native Education Counselling Association (ONECA).

David Lisak argues that prevention efforts aimed at persuading men not to rape are unlikely to work, and universities should instead focus on helping non-rapists to identify rapists and intervene in high-risk situations to stop them. Lisak also argues that whenever a nonstranger sexual assault is reported, it represents a window of opportunity for law enforcement to comprehensively investigate the alleged offender, rather than "putting blinders on looking solely on the alleged 45-minute interaction between these two people". Lisak believes rape victims should be treated with respect, and that every report of an alleged rape should trigger two simultaneous investigations: one into the incident itself, and a second into the alleged perpetrator to determine whether they are a serial offender. Education programs are one way to prevent, protect, and raise awareness about rape and acquaintance rape.
