The catalyst to change came in 1971, when the United Nations General Assembly expelled representatives of Chiang Kai-shek by refusing to recognise their accreditations as representatives of China. Recognition for the People's Republic of China soon followed from most other governments, including the United States. The Republic of China continued to compete with the People's Republic of China (PRC) to be recognised as the legitimate government of China. Since the 1990s, however, a rising movement for formal recognition of Taiwanese independence has made the political status of Taiwan the dominant issue, replacing the debate about the legitimate government of China.
Some legitimate societies and organizations that have established technology programs do not have clear representation in the accord. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) are two organizations that have engineering technology and technician certifications that are respected and recognized but operate independently from the accord. In addition to these societies there are legitimate accreditations that are unacknowledged. They are the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT), the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT), or other non-ABET/TAC institutions that are exclusively regionally accredited.
On 25 October 1971, the United Nations General Assembly admitted the PRC and expelled the ROC, which had been a founding member of the United Nations and was one of the five permanent members of the Security Council. Representatives of Chiang Kai-shek refused to recognise their accreditations as representatives of China and left the assembly. Recognition for the People's Republic of China soon followed from most other member nations, including the United States. By 1984 PRC and ROC began to de-escalate their hostilities through diplomatic relations with each other, and cross-straits trade and investment has been growing ever since.

The staff accreditations in an Olympic team were limited by a quota based on the number of athletes, and the Finnish Olympic Committee could not send as many coaches as they wished. Some personal coaches left out, who without an accreditation would have had to attend as spectators with little personal contact with their athletes, preferred to remain in Finland and rely on telephone communications. A vocal critic was Ari Saukko, the personal coach of Janne Ahonen, who was denied accreditation by the Committee, and after public complaints was offered an unsatisfactory alternative trip arrangement, which he would have had to pay for in his own expense.

The DoD Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process (DIACAP) is a United States Department of Defense (DoD) process that means to ensure that companies and organizations apply risk management to information systems (IS). DIACAP defines a DoD-wide formal and standard set of activities, general tasks and a management structure process for the certification and accreditation (C&A;) of a DoD IS that maintains the information assurance (IA) posture throughout the system's life cycle. NOTE: As of March 12, 2014(though the official transition will take place as of May 2015), the DIACAP is to be replaced by the "Risk Management Framework (RMF) for DoD Information Technology (IT)" Although re-accreditations continue through late 2016, systems that have not yet started accreditation by May 2015 will transition to RMF processes. An Engineering Science program first emerged in the early 1960s from a previous program offering the first two years of an engineering education to be completed at either Columbia University or Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now NYU Tandon School of Engineering). By 1963, several four-year degree options were being offered within a B.S. Engineering Science, including specializations in engineering science, engineering mechanics, engineering electronics, and industrial engineering. By the early 1970s, the B.S. Industrial Engineering had become a separate degree, and evening part-time B.S. programs were available in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. The B.S. in Engineering Science became the first engineering program at Hofstra to earn accreditation in 1971, and remained the only accredited program until the mid-1980s. In 1983, the degree title changed from a B.S. to a B.E., and after being established as separate programs in the 1984–85 academic year, the B.S. Electrical Engineering and B.S. Mechanical Engineering programs received their initial accreditations in 1988.

In 2000 the IOC Ethics Commission decided "after an exhaustive examination of the facts and elements, not to pursue the examination of the Slavkov affair." In 2004 undercover reporters from BBC's programme Panorama secretly filmed Slavkov in a meeting during which he and an associate, Goran Takač, suggested that Slavkov is willing to vote for London's 2012 Olympic bid and solicit votes from other IOC members in exchange for bribes. The programme was broadcast on BBC on 4 August 2004. The IOC Ethics Commission immediately recommended that Ivan Slavkov is provisionally deprived "of all the rights, prerogatives and functions deriving from his membership of the IOC" throughout their investigation and that the accreditations of Goran Takač, Gabor Komyathy, Mahmood El Farnawani and Muttaleb Ahmad are immediately withdrawn for the duration of the Olympic Games in Athens. The IOC Ethics Commission produced a full report on the incident on October 25, 2004, in which it concluded that Mr Slavkov's actions were "contrary to the ethical principles derived from the Olympic Charter and the IOC code of ethics and of an extremely serious nature", and recommended his expulsion from IOC.
