The cliffs are situated on the east bank of the river north of the Maritime Museum and opposite the Queensland University of Technology. The area is a popular picnic and abseiling site. Kloofing is an adventure activity that typically involves the descent of a deep ravine or watercourse that may be dry or wet. The defining factor is usually that the ravine is several times deeper than it is wide. A kloofing trip usually combines hiking with the descent of a watercourse.

Bhagirathi I was first climbed by A Japanese Expedition team via its south-east ridge in 1980. They used around 2000 m rope for fixing and technical climbing. The second climbed happened in 1983 by a British team led by Martin Moran and his three friends John Mothersele, Charlie Heard and Kevin Flint via the west ridge. On 21st August, Martin Moran and Charlie Heard reached the summit around 4.30 pm the next day on 22nd august Charlie Heard died from a fall while abseiling.

In 1993 Michael Jones was drowned on a through trip between Simpson Pot and Valley Entrance, when the waters rose and he was swept into the Kingsdale Master Cave sump. Basic Commando training consisted of getting into top physical shape by speed marching 7–15 miles; running the toughest obstacle course in the world; mountain and cliff climbing; abseiling down cliffs and buildings; unarmed combat; plus stripped- to-the-waist physical exercises using 10-foot logs to throw around.

CRU run many different types of camps, the main ones being: CRU Holiday Camps 60+ camps are run during the school holidays each year for children aged between 6–18. They are mostly run by volunteer leadership teams, made up predominantly of university students, offering activities including sailing, horse riding, dirt-bike riding, wakeboarding, rock climbing, abseiling, skiing and much more. CRU Study Camps 18+ Higher School Certificate & IB study camps are run each year for Year 12 students. CRU Day Camps Week long, daytime camps (typically 8am – 6pm) are run during the school holidays.

The Summit was purchased in 2009 and the high adventure base began operation in 2014. The New River Gorge region offers white water rafting rated from Class II to Class V along the more than 50 miles of river within the New River Gorge National River area. Other outdoor activities that are popular to the area include Rock climbing, rappelling (abseiling), mountain biking, hiking, geocaching, and orienteering.

The belts can be used as medical restraints in institutions for bed and wheelchair restraints, and for safety in activities such as abseiling or construction work. When they are used in sexual bondage plays they are commonly referred to as bondage belts, and also worn in fetish clothing. The belts are usually fastened with buckles and some by a locking mechanism, which enables quick release.

Surrey County Scout Council manages Bentley Copse Activity Centre, which is situated in the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty, about south of the village of Shere. Adjacent to the site is the Hurtwood, some of mixed woodland which has numerous footpaths and bridleways suitable for hiking, orienteering, wide games and nature study. There are three accommodation buildings on site, Palmer House, Parker Lodge and the Nest which together sleep 62. The site also offers a range of activities including air- rifle shooting, climbing, abseiling, archery, high ropes and caving.

The city council operates public tennis courts in various parks including an indoor tennis centre at Westburn Park. The Beach Leisure Centre is home to a climbing wall, gymnasium and a swimming pool. There are numerous swimming pools dotted around the city notably the largest, the Bon-Accord Baths which closed down in 2008. The Finnieston Crane with a soldier abseiling from the tip The Finnieston Crane or Stobcross Crane is a disused giant cantilever crane in the centre of Glasgow, Scotland. It is no longer operational, but is retained as a symbol of the city's engineering heritage. The crane was used for loading cargo, in particular steam locomotives, onto ships to be exported around the world. It is one of four such cranes on the River Clyde, a fifth one having been demolished in 2007, and one of only eleven giant cantilever cranes remaining worldwide.

In the early 1990s, Bercovitch began working in different fields of communications, becoming a journalist, writer and a film director, while still practicing sports and delivering her only child. As a journalist, Bercovitch dealt with disabled people, serving as a journalist on the subject in a morning television show and directing three documentaries, one of which on the Israeli delegation to the 2000 Summer Paralympics. Throughout these years she was training herself in abseiling, mountain climbing and wheelchair dancing. In 2008, Bercovitch directed a documentary titled Three Hundredths of a Second.

Kurz hauled himself back to the mountain face after cutting loose Angerer below him. The guides were not able to pass an unclimbable overhang that separated them from Kurz, but they managed to get a rope long enough to reach Kurz by tying two ropes together. While abseiling, however, Kurz could not get the knot that joined the two ropes to pass through his carabiner. He tried for hours to reach his rescuers, who were just a few metres below him, desperately trying to move himself past the knot, but in vain.

There are four areas that candidates must master: instrumental, juridical, socio-professional, and police sciences and techniques. Police science and technique features high-speed and off-road driving, lock picking techniques, abseiling and climbing techniques, maneuvers with helicopters, transmissions, explosives and knowledge about terrorist groups. Instrumental area deals with physical aptitudes such as marksmanship, obstacle courses, martial arts, physical fitness, swimming, sniping, diving, and proficiency with motorcycles.

The school has a marching band and active Combined Cadet Force, founded in 1901. The Combined Cadet Force is open to senior school pupils, and has upwards of 170 cadets across the Royal Navy, Army and Air Force sections. On 19 October 2012, Channel 4 in the United Kingdom aired their first telethon for Stand Up To Cancer hosted by Davina McCall and Alan Carr along with Dr. Christian Jessen. A second telethon was broadcast on 17 October 2014, again hosted by McCall and Carr along with Dr. Jessen. Subsequent UK telethons, again on Channel 4, followed in 2016 and 2018. Stand Up To Cancer's fundraising activities in the UK include the London 3 Peaks Challenge, which involves participants running up the stairs of Heron Tower, 30 St Mary Axe and 200 Aldersgate before abseiling down the outside of 200 Aldersgate.

An Abalakov thread is often used in multi-pitch ice climbing routes. Because of its safety and convenience, the Abalakov thread is considered one of the most significant innovations in ice climbing.

Gruta do Lago Azul, in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul. Serena's scenes in the indigenous community – including her birth, her mother's death, her growth, the invasion and destruction of the village, until her departure to São Paulo – were filmed in locations such as Bonito, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Carrancas, in Minas Gerais, and the Camorim neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro. In Bonito, the production of about 70 professionals was assisted by firefighters, army personnel and an abseiling team to transport the equipment. In Camorim, a scenographic village was built, basically made of straw and wood, with 13 ocas.

On 1 April 1955, considered to be the first day of the struggle, Drakos and his "Astrape" ("Lightning") team blew up the radio station at Athalassa, destroying it completely. On 30 June 1955 Drakos was arrested by the British with 14 other EOKA members and imprisoned in Kyrenia Castle but managed to escape 3 months later, by tying blankets together and abseiling out of the windows.

Superteams is normally the second weekend of March and is one of the flagship events attracting approximately 480 students to compete and 60 student volunteers. It is the largest one-day event of its kind in Scotland. The event is made up of teams of seven with no more than four from the opposite sex, the team must also nominate a Superman and Superwoman. This is a fun event and separated into many bases, some of which over the years have included; Go-Karting, Abseiling, Tug of war, Sprints, Sumo Wrestling, Bungee Runs, Paintballing and Orienteering.

At the end of the dry season a bergschrund can make problematic the last section of the climb. The route is rated D and was climbed the first time on the 24 June 1969 by K. Schreckenbach, H. Saler and K. Sussmilch. A large number of accidents have happened descending the Southeast Ridge Route, primarily due to the failure of snow anchors while abseiling. The summit ridge of Artesonraju accessed by the North Ridge Route is well known for its fragility; special care must be taken as there is an unusually high risk of avalanches at the start of the climbing season here.

Crater Bluff Located within the large area of temperate savanna grasslands the park incorporates the most spectactular part of the Warrumbungle mountains, a region of past volcanic activity with unusual lava formations. Some of the most well-known rock formations include Bluff Mountain, Mount Exmouth (tallest mountain in the park), The Breadknife, Split Rock, Fans Horizon and Crater Bluff. There are many scenic bushwalks and both rock climbing and abseiling are popular. Though the park preserved habitat for koalas in the past, a massive 2013 fire decimated the koala population; none are thought to have survived.

The principal disciplines in adventure racing include trekking, mountain biking, and paddling although races can incorporate a multitude of other disciplines including climbing, abseiling, horse riding, skiing and white water rafting.

Because the belayer generally keeps the rope locked off, the climber's fall should be arrested and they are left suspended, but safe, somewhere below the protection. A dynamic rope, which has some stretch in it, is often used so that the climber is not brought to a sudden jarring stop. Some climbers choose static ropes for abseiling/rapelling because it's easier to use. As the climber continues to ascend, they clip the rope into higher and higher metal loops fixed into the rock, so that in the event of a fall they don't fall further than the "unclipped" length of rope allows.

ERU officers are also subject to stringent background checks by the Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU). Failure to pass these assessments may mean expulsion from operational duties. Pete’s Paradise is a unique structure with crystal clear rim stone pools and a maze like network of crawls and chambers. This cave was discovered by the Gibraltar Cave Research Group on 26 February 1966 by members who were abseiling down the rock. The cave was named after Peter Mann from the Research Group. (Some people say that it was named after him because his first words when he entered the site were “This is paradise!”) The Gibraltar Cave Research Group then carried out grade 6 surveys and an excavation of the cave later in 1966 and a Structure and Site plan was produced.

In addition the section provides SME advice and trials work for all roping activities.

Also a bellringer and statistician, Marylon Coates is the author of many statistical studies on the incidence and mortality rates from cancer in Australia. In 2015 Coates survived a serious heart attack while at bellringing practice in St Mary's Cathedral and had to be winched down on a stretcher by abseiling rescuers through a trapdoor in the floor of the tower. It was impossible to take him down via the normal route of 120 steps in a narrow circular stairwell. The persistence and skill of his ringing companions, St Mary's Tower Captain Murray-Luke Peard and bellringer Mark Ferguson, were credited with saving his life by immediately administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR.

Keating's television career began in Northern Ireland where she presented The Video Picture Show, Channel One and the music programme Greenrock, but her big break came when she was selected to join the team of Blue Peter from 13 November 1986. Keating appeared on the programme with Peter Duncan, Janet Ellis, Mark Curry, Yvette Fielding, and John Leslie. Her Blue Peter career included a trip to Moscow in 1987 during the perestroika period, swimming with sharks, abseiling down skyscrapers and standing strapped to the top of a light aircraft whilst it performed aerial acrobatics. She also interviewed serving prime minister Margaret Thatcher on the programme in 1988.

Fast roping is particularly useful for marines, who can use the technique to board ships at sea as well as to reach destinations on land. It is quicker than abseiling (rappelling), although more dangerous, particularly if the person is carrying a heavy load, because the rope is not attached to them with a descender. The person holds onto the rope with gloved hands and feet and slides down it. Several people can slide down the same rope simultaneously, provided that there is a gap of approximately between them, so that each one has time to get out of the way when they reach the ground.

He climbed widely in Britain too, publishing a guide to the Scottish Highlands in 1969, and in 1968 he and the Scottish mountaineer Tom Patey were the first to climb Am Buachaille, a sea stack at Sandwood Bay off the coast of Sutherland. Two years later, both Clough and Patey died in separate climbing accidents within five days of one another. When Clough died on 30 May 1970 he would have been unaware Patey had been killed abseiling down another Scottish sea stack on 25 May. His wife Nikki Clough, who later died of cancer, was also a mountaineer and climbed the north face of the Matterhorn with her husband.

All forms of classical abseiling are generally for emergency use only. Modern abseil equipment and techniques have largely made the classical abseil obsolete, however where the right mechanical equipment is not available and a descent of steep terrain by rope is necessary, such as in an emergency situation, the classical methods are still used with caution. Walking parties are generally now the most common users of classical abseils when negotiating steep terrain, as they do not normally carry mechanical devices but often do carry rope. Classical abseils work by wrapping a rope around the body to create friction allowing the abseiler to descend in a controlled manner.

Belay devices Belay devices are mechanical friction brake devices used to control a rope when belaying. Their main purpose is to allow the rope to be locked off with minimal effort to arrest a climber's fall. Multiple kinds of belay devices exist, such as tubers (for example the Black Diamond ATC) or active assisted- braking devices (for example the Petzl Grigri), some of which may additionally be used as descenders for controlled descent on a rope, as in abseiling or rappelling. If a belay device is lost or damaged, a Munter hitch on a carabiner can be used as an improvised passive belay device.

Ailladie is hidden from view and is just off the R477 road, , at a point before the road turns inland and south-east to Lisdoonvarna. The Ailladie car-park (grid ) is marked on online maps and is opposite the Stone Wall section of the cliff (see Ailladie map below). Beside the car park, to the south, is the smaller rock climbing crag known as Ballyryan (climbers can be seen on the Ballyryan rock face by the passing R477 traffic). Access to the base of the cliff is only possible without abseiling at the northernmost end, where a roped fisherman's descent gives access to Ailladie's cliff base, which is a large limestone platform.

They can also make detours to find the best attack angle against dangerous prey, even when the best detour takes it out of visual contact with the prey, and sometimes the planned route leads to abseiling down a silk thread and biting the prey from behind. Such detours may take up to an hour, and it usually picks the best route even if it needs to walk past an incorrect route.

Derbyshire has several campsites: Birch Hill Plantation in Bolsover is ideal for those wishing to walk the Peak District and the Sherwood Forest, with several local walks along old disused railway lines that are all linked to provide either long or short hikes in a traffic free environment. The site is of grassland that is sheltered by woods and can camp up to 120 people. Drum Hill Scout Camp is a site located in Little Eaton that has three open areas for camping and a choice of three residential centres. Large enough to hold 1,000 campers, the site offers a number of activities including abseiling, archery, an assault course, climbing wall, mountain bikes, orienteering and shooting.

Despite appearances, Mount Lindesay offers few opportunities for rock-climbers, due to the unsound nature of the rock (decaying rhyolite). There is one steep and exposed scrambling route to the summit, rated at approximately grade 6–7, which starts at the south east corner of the upper cliffs. The caves are believed by some local people to be the location of a legendary treasure hidden by an indigenous Pijao tribal leader, the Cacique Calarcá (from whom the nearby town derives its name), during his battle against the Spanish colonialists The cliffs are a landmark of the region, and can be seen clearly from the nearby towns of Armenia and Calarcá. They offer opportunities for rock climbing and abseiling (rappeling) up to heights of 80 meters, as well as a 40-meter zip-line (zip-slide), ecological trails of 3.2 km and 9 km, and camping and a restaurant. From the foot of the cliffs there are fine views of Armenia, Calarca and the surrounding area.

509 The SBS carried out one of its most high-profile operations when it liberated the British Embassy in Kuwait, abseiling from helicopters hovering above the embassy. They were also responsible for carrying out diversionary raids along the Kuwaiti coast which in effect diverted a number of Iraqi troops to the SBS area of operations and away from the main thrust of the coalition build up. In September 1999, about 20 SBS members were involved in the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) in East Timor. Together with the Australian Special Air Service Regiment and the New Zealand Special Air Service they formed INTERFET's special forces element named Response Force.

Ensuring the harness fits correctly is key to avoiding pain in the upper thigh area caused by the leg loops being too tight around the upper legs and groin area, while at the same time ensuring that a climber flipped over in a fall does not slip out. The waist belt should be tightened snugly. Leg loops should not be particularly tight, but for obvious reasons neither should they have enough slack to allow extraneous parts of a male climber to get caught inside them.

Several people later indicated Baig may have been suffering from high altitude sickness, since he had displayed questionable behaviour in abseiling down the Bottleneck. Sträng also noticed that Baig was incoherent, first offering to help in the rescue, later refusing to help, then returning moments later to assist them again. Baig lost his footing and bumped into Sträng, who then urged him to let go of the rope attached to Mandić's harness, before all four climbers would be dragged down. Baig finally let go of the rope, but to Sträng's and the others' surprise, he did not try to stop his slide by using the self-arrest technique, which has about a 50% chance of arresting a fall, and Baig fell to his death.

The most significant evidence that this extension is due to hydraulic forces is that the leg spines become erect during the jump, a result of increased body pressure which can be demonstrated on many spiders.

The São Paulo GOE has about 200 members, a fleet of 60 vehicles, 5 tactical subdivisions, as well as a specialized Delta unit with its own intelligence service and plain-clothes police and unmarked cars, as well as administrative divisions. The group has an operational base located in the Campo Belo neighborhood, south side, where there is the necessary infrastructure for civilian police can carry out their missions and training. The base has a fitness and martial training arts center, climbing wall and abseiling use of local training for CQC (close quarters combat), instruction rooms, meeting rooms, accommodation, dressing rooms, workshop for maintenance weaponry and parking. There, the police conduct fitness and self defense training with an emphasis on martial arts like Aikido and Jiu Jitsu.

They then travelled to the place of the challenge which could have been on the other side of the world. These challenges asked of you more than you wanted them to and such challenges included hand-feeding sharks in Australia, jumping down a 100m gorge in New Zealand on a wire descender, abseiling the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, driving a car across a huge drop on nothing but two slack wires and so on.

A wide range of over 40 outdoor education activities are offered including climbing, abseiling, archery, fencing, gorge walking, high ropes, mountain biking, night walk, orienteering, kayaking, open canoeing, raft building, team development, go- karting and swimming. Since they began nearly 100 years ago the essence of what they do hasn’t really changed.

His climbing partner Miriam O'Brien was later to become his wife, and a famous mountaineer in her own right. Underhill and Kenneth Henderson were responsible for introducing technical mountaineering to Grand Teton National Park in 1929, the year the park was formed. The centre is owned and run by Scouts Scotland as one of their National Activity Centres since 1965. The site is unusual for a Scout Adventures site in that it has a sizeable area of grounds which is utilised for adventurous activities but is not available for camping. Instead it has an extensive indoor accommodation layout with one long dormitory building divided into four self contained blocks that sleep a total of 92 beds and three lodges with a total of 44 beds all served by dining room and three classrooms. Activities on site are extensive and include climbing, abseiling, crate stacking, high ropes, ghyll scrambling, archery and mountain biking in addition to traditional outdoor and Scouting skills such as fire lighting and navigation.

In rock climbing, the offset water knot is a favored knot for joining two ropes for a rappel longer than half the length of the ropes. There is controversy over its safety, as it can fail by capsizing under high loads, and some American climbers refer to it as the European death knot, abbreviated to EDK, with some sources recommending against its use. Failure of this knot has been implicated in some accidents and near-misses. Many sources argue that this is a misnomer, and the knot is safe for abseiling and rappelling, since this does not generate such high forces, and the knot, being on one side of the twin lines used in abseil, sees only half of this force.

Today, High Ashurst serves as an outdoor education centre managed by Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development (SOLD), which offers an array of outdoor learning courses for both adults and children. In addition to this it now serves as venue for TAZ (The Adventure Zone) summer holiday day camp. Various activities can be undertaken by visitors to the site aged 8 and up, including archery, adventure walks, challenge courses, climbing, abseiling, high ropes courses, mountain biking, orienteering, team tasks, and woodland skills. Facilities for both short and long stay terms are available, and High Ashurst offers a number of deluxe cabins (including Pinnacle, which caters specifically for those with high mobility requirements and special educational needs), as well as camping grounds and Teepee villages are available for those who want to experience ‘the great outdoors’.

Canyoning in Gitgit, Bali, Indonesia Canyoning (canyoneering in the United States, kloofing in South Africa) is travelling in canyons using a variety of techniques that may include other outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling (rappelling), and swimming. Although non-technical descents such as hiking down a canyon (canyon hiking) are often referred to as canyoneering, the terms canyoning and canyoneering are more often associated with technical descents -- those that require abseils (rappels) and ropework, technical climbing or down-climbing, technical jumps, and/or technical swims. Canyoning is frequently done in remote and rugged settings and often requires navigational, route-finding, and other wilderness travel skills. Canyons that are ideal for canyoning are often cut into the bedrock stone, forming narrow gorges with numerous drops, beautifully sculpted walls, and sometimes spectacular waterfalls.

An alternative route is the north ridge, known as Pinnacle Ridge, which is a rock climb that requires a climber to have a rope and harness and be capable of abseiling, unless the third pinnacle is omitted by bypassing on the east side. While rope is a sensible option for the moderate climb up Gillean, it is not required for Knight's Peak if the correct route is taken. To reach the base of the Pinnacle Ridge a climber starts in the same place as for the route described above but instead of crossing the burn continues up hill on the right hand side until just below the start of the Basteir gorge when the stream exiting the gorge is crossed to reach the base of the lowest pinnacle. Another alternative route of ascent or descent is the West Ridge.

Nick Leventis (born 31 January 1980) is a British racing driver and founder of Strakka Racing. One of his most memorable successes was winning the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 category with Danny Watts and Jonny Kane, breaking five records in the process. In addition to his own racing career, Nick is dedicated to helping young and aspiring driving talent through Strakka Performance – a bespoke driver development programme he created in 2012 that has seen graduates reach WEC and F1. Nick is an active fundraiser and has raised large sums of money by abseiling down The Shard in London (Western Europe's tallest skyscraper) for the Commando Spirit Appeal on behalf of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and has sky-dived from 30,000 ft above Mount Everest for the Global Angels charity.

The Juniors have regular trips throughout the year mainly in the Colombo area. There are frequent Senior School trips to Paris for the French students, Beijing for the Mandarin students, St. John's College Jaffna for the Community Service students, the Cultural Triangle and Ancient Capitals of Sri Lanka for the Middle School History students, the National University of Singapore for the Advanced Level Science students, and Malaysia and soon Thailand for the Football, Cricket and Basketball squads. Leadership Camps with white water rafting, abseiling and other adventure sports are organized at Kitulgala and elsewhere for students from Form 4 upwards. In addition, Senior Students are encouraged to do internships during their holidays and these include, Beijing University, the United Nations in New York, Game Parks in South Africa and Rwanda, a hospital in Colombo for kidney transplant operations, Flying School in Ratmalana, and offices of architects, lawyers.

On July 15, 2012, The Mayor of London and London 2012 Festival presented Surprises: Streb, one of several high-profile cultural events being organised this summer to celebrate the London 2012 Games. Staged by LIFT, the London International Festival Of Theatre, Surprises: Streb was an event on a scale never before seen in the UK, thrilling spectators not only locally but across the planet. Surprises: Streb was commissioned by the Mayor of London and the London 2012 Festival with funding from Arts Council England, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor. Streb with a team of 32 dancers (16 from her USA troupe and 16 UK dancers) performed seven "actions" throughout the day on the London cityscape, including abseiling front forward down City Hall, bungee jumping from the Millennium Bridge and attaching 32 dancers to every other spoke of the London Eye.

People at risk of suspension trauma include people using industrial harnesses (fall arrest systems, abseiling systems, confined space systems), people using harnesses for sporting purposes (caving, climbing, parachuting, etc.), stunt performers, circus performers, and occupations that require the use of harnesses and suspension systems in general. Suspension shock can also occur in medical environments, for similar reasons. In the UK the term "suspension trauma" has been replaced by "syncope" or "pre-syncope" as "trauma" suggests that there has been a physical injury that has resulted in the fallen person becoming unconscious. In the circumstances where a person has fallen into suspension on a rope/lanyard and has become unconscious, it is thought that the unconscious state "syncope" is due to a combination of orthostasis or motionless vertical suspension, with "pre-syncope" being the state before the person becomes unconscious where the fallen person may experience symptoms such as light-headedness; nausea; sensations of flushing; tingling or numbness of the arms or legs; anxiety; visual disturbance; or faintness.

The key element to the Trust providing long-term support for as a long as young person needs it, the Return to Sail programme has grown from the Round the Island Race and one residential week in 2007 to 15 different sailing and adventure activity trips spread across the county in 2019. Longer cruising sailing trips take place in the Solent, Scotland and on the East Coast, while the adventure activity trips give the young people the chance to enjoy a variety of different activities over a week, from dinghy sailing to abseiling, high ropes, kayaking, cycling and even surfing! These residential trips take place at Essex Outdoors Bradwell, Waterpark Lakeland Adventure Centre on Coniston Water, Outdoor Adventure in Bude, Cornwall, and for the first time in 2019, the Hollowford Centre in Derbyshire's Peak District. Because of the Return to Sail opportunities, the young people get the sense of being part of something special and they look forward to coming back and doing it all again every year.
