There were no fatalities and the cause of the initial derailment was eventually attributed to overloading of some of the ballast wagons in the freight train which resulted in buffer locking when the train initially left Clapham Junction yard that day. The front ticket office at Surbiton is open seven days a week.

Based on position and shape, the three points of contact may be so close that it appears to be stably resting on only a single point. A rock at the top of a sculpture, for example, can have a rounded shape, but be approximately flat and oriented horizontally, and be in a state of equilibrium. The stability of a structure is also affected by the friction between rocks, especially when rocks are set upon one another at an angle. A structure may topple over (collapse) based on the magnitude of other phenomena, such as wind, rain, snow, and localized ground vibration, or general seismic activity.

Chair 1 had a wooden ramp, covered with snow, that skiers had to side- step up to reach the chairs. Sometimes skiers would lose their balance and cause several of the skiers in line below to topple over like dominoes. The ramp was removed sometime in 1980s and a new high-speed Chair 1 was installed and renamed "Broadway Express." The original main lodge was expanded and to this day, the upper part of the old exterior rock wall mural, with a white and brown flagstone arrow and skier, can be seen. By 1973, under McCoy's leadership, the ski area grew to 14 double-chairs, and a second base lodge originally named Warming Hut II was built.

During most of the year the water level is high enough to kayak through, but in summer it can get a bit too low. With average water levels the stream can be kayaked from Rotoorangi Rd. Bridge to Te Rahu Rd. Bridge with two possible stop over’s at Cambridge Rd. and Woodstock Rd. This journey goes past scattered native trees and through some blocks of native bush where no direct sunlight can get through. There is only one rapid to worry about which can easily topple over a kayaker, and that is situated 10 seconds after the Woodstock Bridge. Due to being a low-lying stream, there is a very slow water flow.

On the night of April 10, 1624, during another storm, the ship lost the grip of her anchors on the sea- floor once again when wind and waves forced her to crash onto rocks and topple over. And as the ship went over, two large holes were opened in her structure, drowning master John Bridges in the wreck and killing two crewmen, John Vow and Peter Morrett when their escape boat capsized and was struck by Little James falling mainyard. Again Stephens and Fell mutinied and refused to help save the ship. Fortunately the masters of several ships in-port at Damariscove were available to inspect the Little James wreck and found she was fit for salvage.

The hairpins were constructed so that the mules could park their double-ended carts and run-around to pull the cart in the opposite direction up the next stretch, thus avoiding the need to turn around the hairpin bends, which often caused carts to topple over and spill their contents. The Caserne Pellegrin and the Fort Moyen are also linked by an enormous staircase with over 1000 steps which was constructed in the rock, with windows opening onto the “French” side of the fort and batteries (notably the B-douze — B12) facing the passes. The windows provided light and air and were also used for the removal of spoil from the tunnels. Finally there is a cableway that allowed stores to be carried to the Fort Moyen which was installed after the fort was electrified in 1908.
