Competition rules are similar to other throwing events: a round consists of one attempt by each competitor in turn, and competitions typically consist of three to six rounds. The competitor with the longest single legal throw (over all rounds) is the winner; in the case of a tie the competitors' second-longest throws are also considered. Competitions involving large numbers of athletes sometimes use a "cut": all competitors compete in the first three rounds, but only athletes who are currently among the top eight or have achieved some minimum distances are permitted to attempt to improve on their distance in additional rounds (typically three).

In 2007, Adams went to the Osaka World Championships as a favourite to take a medal due to her being one of only three women to throw over 20 m before the championships. In qualifying, Adams led the field with a throw of 19.45 m. Adams held second place behind Nadzeya Astapchuk throughout the final, but responded well in the last round with a mammoth throw and Commonwealth record of 20.54 m to take the gold. This made Adams one of few female athletes ever to take IAAF World Titles at youth, junior and senior level.She was the third after Jana Pittman (2003) and Yelena Isinbayeva (2005).

James Edward Campbell (born 1 April 1988 in Cheltenham, England2014 CWG profile) is a Great British and Scottish track and field athlete. Campbell set the Scottish record in the javelin throw in 2006, throwing for a distance of at the World Junior Championships in Beijing, ranking him 8th (junior) in the world. In 2009 Campbell improved his lifetime best to 76.71 to set his 3rd National record of his career. At the Commonwealth Games trials, just weeks after he became UK Champion in 2010, Campbell became only the 10th Briton and 3rd British Under 23 to ever throw over 80m recording a new Scottish National Record and a lifetime best of 80.38.

Sedykh, the daughter of two current world record holders who competed for the Soviet Union, was born in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, France, in 1993, as her family had moved to the city, where her father lectures at the Leonardo da Vinci University. She picked up sport at a young age and first played tennis and tried throwing the shot put (her mother's discipline), but switched to the hammer throw at the age 13. She is mostly coached by her father, but her mother, who has come to understand the hammer throw over the years, also contributes to the process. During the 2006 season, Zumaya often threw pitches that were measured at or above the official record reading of . On July 3, 2006, at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, California, Justin Verlander, Joel Zumaya, and Fernando Rodney each threw multiple fastballs measured in at over , becoming the first time in MLB history that three pitchers on the same team had done so during a game. Just five games into the season, they became the first MLB team to have the same three pitchers throw over in a season. On July 4, 2006, at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, California, Zumaya threw a pitch measured at , thus tying the "unofficial" record held by Mark Wohlers.

Different boomerang designs have different flight characteristics and are suitable for different conditions. The accuracy of the throw depends on understanding the weight and aerodynamics of that particular boomerang, and the strength, consistency and direction of the wind; from this, the thrower chooses the angle of tilt, the angle against the wind, the elevation of the trajectory, the degree of spin and the strength of the throw. A great deal of trial and error is required to perfect the throw over time. A properly thrown boomerang will travel out parallel to the ground, sometimes climbing gently, perform a graceful, anti-clockwise, circular or tear-drop shaped arc, flatten out and return in a hovering motion, coming in from the left or spiralling in from behind.

He is noted to have been a part of writers who would become the makers of a "new" poetry, which sought to "throw over the traditions of American Poetry", as James Weldon Johnson would describe it. Eagles McNabb finally amassed the kind of numbers that placed him firmly as one of the elite NFL quarterbacks statistically. He averaged 8.26 yards per attempt, completed 64.0% of his passes, threw 31 touchdown passes (he also ran for three more), and had only eight interceptions. These numbers translated to a passer rating of 104.7. Further, he became the first quarterback in league history to throw over 30 touchdowns and fewer than 10 interceptions in a single season. This dramatic improvement coincided with a massive upgrading of the Eagles' receiving corps, namely the arrival of Terrell Owens, who caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns in only 14 games. As a result, the Eagles won their first seven games of the season for the first time in franchise history, clinched first place in their division with five weeks still to play in the regular season (becoming only the third team in modern NFL history to do this), and won the NFC East by a record-tying seven-game margin in posting a 13-3 record, the franchise's best 16-game season ever.
