A U.S. amphibious fighting vehicle destroyed near Nasiriyah On 23 March, a convoy from the 3rd Infantry Division, including the female American soldiers Jessica Lynch, Shoshana Johnson, and Lori Piestewa, was ambushed after taking a wrong turn into the city. Eleven U.S. soldiers were killed, and seven, including Lynch and Piestewa, were captured. Piestewa died of wounds shortly after capture, while the remaining five prisoners of war were later rescued. The regiment was reunited at Warrenton, VA, on July 10, and attached to Bayard's brigade, with which it took part in the Battle of Cedar Mountain. This was the unit's first encounter with elements of the Army of Northern Virginia, albeit only a portion under the command of Stonewall Jackson. During the battle, the regiment suffered significant losses as the result of the “Middletown Disaster”. This action at the end of the battle, occurred when the regiment was following 1st Vermont Volunteer Cavalry's charge down a sunken lane down and lost them in the dust of the charge taking a wrong turn and ran into a rebel battery supported by an infantry at point-blank range.

The Dulce Café story has its origins in Argentina when a young student by the name of Hubert Stempowski had his first taste of ice-cream in a parlour in Buenos Aires. Hubert emigrated to South Africa in 1976 to complete his final year of study in engineering at Wits university. After holding a number of jobs in Johannesburg Hubert dreamed of moving to the more relaxed coastal areas of South Africa. In 1979 he finally decided to pack all his belongings into a van and head off to the coast – he picked East London as his preferred destination but fate had other things in store for Hubert and after taking a wrong turn while driving at night he ended up in Port Elizabeth.
