The Castle of Atienza (Spanish: Castillo de Atienza) is a castle located in Atienza, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1931. Standing high on a rock, it can be seen from miles around. The castle frequently changed hands between the Muslims (Arabs or Moors) and the European Christians until it was finally taken by Alfonso VI in 1085.

Krojer competed at the 1906 Austrian Olympic selection competition, and he won in the 100 metres and the triple jump and finished second in the long jump, high jump and the standing high jump, so off he went to the 1906 Intercalated Games being held in Athens, Greece. At the Games he competed in seven events in total, one on the track, five in the field and also competed in the pentathlon, his best finish at the games was in the standing high jump where he finished ninth, although only ten athletes competed. Six years later and now aged 26 years old, Krojer was competing at the 1912 Summer Olympics, this time he only entered four events, and sadly he again failed to reach any finals. Krojer was national champion in the javelin throw in 1911 and the high jump in 1913.

In 1904, Worthington Hall, later known as the Shawnee Playhouse, was built in the village. Shawnee is also the home of the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, originally built as the Buckwood Inn with a course designed by A. W. Tillinghast in the early 20th century. Benjamin "Ben" Willard Adams (March 31, 1890 - March 14, 1961) was an American athlete who competed mainly in the standing jumps. At the 1912 Summer Olympics he won a silver medal in the standing high jump and a bronze in the standing long jump, while his elder brother Platt Adams won a gold and a silver, respectively. Ben also competed in the exhibition baseball tournament for Sweden.

Richard Leslie "Dick" Byrd (May 16, 1892 - June 20, 1958) was an American athlete and baseball player who won the silver medal in the discus throw at the 1912 Summer Olympics. At the same Olympics he also was a member of USA national baseball team which competed in a single baseball match held as demonstration sport.

The battery's design was similar to that of the 100 ton gun batteries on the British-ruled island of Malta. He was also a member of the American relay team which was disqualified in the semi-finals of the 4x100 metre relay event after a baton-passing fault on the first transfer.

Dworshak Dam Dworshak Dam is a concrete gravity dam with a sloped downstream face and vertical upstream face, standing high from the foundations, above the riverbed and measuring long along its crest. The top of the dam is wide at an elevation of above sea level. The main body of the structure contains approximately of concrete. Brean is a village and civil parish between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on- Sea in Somerset, England. The name is derived from "Bryn" Brythonic and Modern Welsh for a hill and it has a population of 635. Close to the village is Brean Down, a promontory standing high and extending into the Bristol Channel, on which stands Brean Down Fort, marking the end of Weston Bay. The village is on a strip of land between the sea and the River Axe.

Denis-Perron dam () is a rockfill embankment dam spanning the Sainte- Marguerite River, a tributary of the lower Saint Lawrence River, in eastern Quebec, Canada. Standing high and long, the dam is the primary component of Hydro-Québec's Sainte-Marguerite 3 hydroelectric project. The dam is the second highest in Quebec and the hydraulic head afforded to its power plant is also the largest in the province. Construction on the dam began in 1994 after seven years of studies and planning.

Brean Down is a promontory off the coast of Somerset, England, standing high and extending into the Bristol Channel at the eastern end of Bridgwater Bay between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea. It is the second tallest triumphal arch in the world, after Monumento a la Revolución in Mexico, standing high and wide. Built in 1982 on the Triumph Return Square at the foot of Moran Hill () in the North Korean capital city of Pyongyang, the monument was built to honour and glorify President Kim Il- sung's role in the military resistance for Korean independence.

Olof Agne Laurentius Holmström (29 December 1893 – 22 October 1949) was a Swedish sprinter who competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics. He won a bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m relay, but failed to reach the finals of individual 100 m and 200 m events. In 1917 Holmström won Swedish titles in the 100 m, 200 m, 4 × 100 m and standing high jump events. After retiring from competitions he worked as a sports teacher, and between 1930 and 1949 was secretary-general of the Swedish Gymnastics Federation.

Conchas Dam is a dam on the Canadian River in San Miguel County, New Mexico in the United States, about northeast of Santa Rosa. Forming Conchas Lake, it is a concrete gravity dam flanked by earthen wing dikes, standing high with a total length of . The dam serves mainly for irrigation water supply and flood control and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. First proposed in the early 1930s, the dam was initially rejected because of its remote site and Depression conditions in New Mexico.

The Rookery Building is a historic office building located at 209 South LaSalle Street in the Chicago Loop. Completed by architects Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root of Burnham and Root in 1888, it is considered one of their masterpiece buildings, and was once the location of their offices. The building is high, twelve stories tall, and is considered the oldest standing high-rise in Chicago. It has a unique style with exterior load-bearing walls and an interior steel frame, which provided a transition between accepted and new building techniques.

It was one of the first lighthouses in Scotland to use this type of "scintillating" light. It was replaced in 1896, possibly on the same site, by a new lighthouse built to a design by David Stevenson as part of a major programme of construction works around northern Scotland. A fog warning system was installed the following year. Stevenson's lighthouse consists of a circular white-painted stone tower standing high at an elevation of above Mean High Water with a number of buildings nearby to house generators and the lighthouse keepers.

The Gandhi Sagar Dam is one of the four major dams built on India's Chambal River. The dam is located in the Mandsaur, Neemuch districts of the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is a masonry gravity dam, standing high, with a gross storage capacity of 7.322 billion cubic metres from a catchment area of . The dam's foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 7 March 1954, and construction of the main dam was done by leading contractor Dwarka Das Agrawal & Associates and was completed in 1960.

Monifeith 4 front The largest stone is a fragment of a free- standing high cross, 1.16 metres by 0.28 metres wide by 0.18 metres thick, once built into the front of St Regulus' Church and possibly originally from St Bride's Ring. The upper portion of the front face is a crucifixion scene, with the portion of the Christ figure above the waist missing.

The builders of the Whitby and Pickering Railway, used the narrow valley at Newtondale that the beck inhabits to run their railway through. At Fen Bog, they had to float the railway on timber and sheep fleeces. Between the source of the Beck and Pickering, the beck flows under the railway six times and the railway shadows the beck all the way into Pickering. The beck was used to power several watermills in the town of Pickering, of which three are still standing; High Mill, Vivers Mill and Low Mill.

McWethy received orders to submarine school McWethy went in April 1942 to in Key West then in July to submarine school in New London. Standing high in the class, he was able to choose duty assignment in October to under construction at Manitowoc, Wisconsin. After sea trials in Lake Michigan, it was down the Mississippi and on to Pearl Harbor. Pogy made six successful war patrols from Pearl and Midway Island, accounting for 23 enemy ships and avoiding being one of the 52 U.S. submarines lost in the war.

Axial Seamount (also Coaxial Seamount or Axial Volcano) is a seamount and submarine volcano located on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, approximately west of Cannon Beach, Oregon. Standing high, Axial Seamount is the youngest volcano and current eruptive center of the Cobb–Eickelberg Seamount chain. Located at the center of both a geological hotspot and a mid-ocean ridge, the seamount is geologically complex, and its origins are still poorly understood. Axial Seamount is set on a long, low-lying plateau, with two large rift zones trending to the northeast and southwest of its center.

The Acueducto de los Milagros () is the ruins of a Roman aqueduct bridge, part of the aqueduct built to supply water to the Roman colony of Emerita Augusta, today Mérida, Spain. Only a relatively small stretch of the aqueduct still stands, consisting of 38 arched pillars standing high along a course of some . It is constructed from opus mixtum - granite ashlar blocks interspersed with red brick - utilising a double arcade arrangement. The structure originally brought water to the city from a reservoir called the Lago de Proserpina, fed by a stream called Las Pardillas, around to the north-west of Mérida.

For this purpose, a system of steel cable towers was erected to carry the steel concrete-pouring buckets. Malva sylvestris is a species of the mallow genus Malva in the family of Malvaceae and is considered to be the type species for the genus. Known as common mallow to English-speaking Europeans, it acquired the common names of cheeses, high mallow and tall mallow (mauve des bois by the French) as it migrated from its native home in Western Europe, North Africa and Asia through the English-speaking world. M. sylvestris is a vigorous plant with showy flowers of bright mauve-purple, with dark veins, standing high and growing freely in meadows, hedgerows and in fallow fields.

Standing high on a rock, Atienza Castle can be seen from miles around. It frequently changed hands between the Moors and the Christians until it was finally retaken by Alfonso VI in 1085. With foundations dating back to the 5th century, Sigüenza Castle was extended by the Moors and retaken for the Christians by Bernard of Agen in 1123. In the late 18th century, Bishop Juan Díaz de la Guerra changed the appearance of the fortress into that of an episcopal palace but during the War of Spanish Independence it was taken by the French who seriously damaged it.

Aikey Brae stone circle Aikey Brae's stone circle, excavated by Richard Bradley in 2001, lies within the parish on the edge of Bridgend Wood, between Maud and Old Deer, south of B9029 on the summit of Parkhouse Hill in the north of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is a nearly complete recumbent stone circle. Characteristic of a recumbent stone circle is a "recumbent stone" accompanied by two standing, high, often tapering "flank stones", which are within the circle or near the circle. It was constructed in about 2000 BC. The circle consists of ten stones and has a diameter of .

The pile of loose boulders at the south end of the pluton which contains the ringing rocks is called a tor. The reason the tor developed is that the OPM units are extremely resistant to weathering, and conversely the adjoining AM and ABM units are very weak. As the Dry Creek drainage began to erode the NW corner of the pluton, the softer AM and ABM units were quickly stripped away, leaving vertical thin walls of OPM units standing high above the surrounding landscape. Intense freezing and thawing during the Pleistocene periglacial period slowly shattered the walls, much like breaking tempered glass.

Haesugwaneumsang (Bodhisattva of Mercy), known as the goddess Gwanseeum-Bosal, gazes out to sea Mount Naksan is crowned by the Buddhist statue of Haesugwaneumsang (해수관음입상, Bodhisattva of Mercy), known as the goddess Gwanseum-Bosal, facing southeast standing high on a high pedestal. The white granite statue stands in a clearing at the top of the hill, eyes and fingers closed in peaceful meditation as it gazes out to sea. The massive statue is the work of Busan sculptor Gwon Jeong-hwan (권정환) and was dedicated in 1977. 700 tons of granite and six months were required to complete the sculpture.

Chicago Board of Trade from the Willis Tower The LaSalle Street canyon is home to other historic buildings including the Rookery Building, a National Historic Landmark considered to be the oldest standing high-rise. A 1907 renovation included a lobby remodeled by Frank Lloyd Wright in the Prairie School style. The name rookery comes from the previous building on the property which became home to many birds, especially pigeons. The nearby Reliance Building was the first skyscraper to have large plate glass windows comprise the majority of its surface area, and One North LaSalle was for some time one of Chicago's tallest buildings.

The Shard, also referred to as the Shard of Glass, Shard London Bridge and formerly London Bridge Tower, is a 95-storey skyscraper, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, in Southwark, London, that forms part of the Shard Quarter development. Standing high, the Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, and the sixth-tallest building in Europe. It is also the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the concrete tower of the Emley Moor transmitting station. From the 12th to the 16th century, the noble family of Heußlein lived here. The Parish Church of Saints Marcellinus and Peter, standing high above the village, was built in 1619. The former steward of the cathedral chapter of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg was, after Secularization in 1803, yielded up at Bavaria’s behest to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in 1805 to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg, with which it passed in 1814 to Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, the current community came into being with the Gemeindeedikt (“Municipal Edict”) of 1818.

On July 15, 2010, BP announced that it had successfully plugged the oil leak using a tightly fitted cap. The cap, weighing 75 tons and standing high, is now bolted to the failed blowout preventer. It consists of a Flange Transition Spool and a 3 Ram Stack and is a temporary solution. President Barack Obama cautiously welcomed the news that the leak had been stopped, though stressing, "it is important we don't get ahead of ourselves". If the cap holds for the planned 48 hours, its valves will be reopened temporarily in order to allow for seismic tests to ensure that oil is not escaping into the bedrock.

He was offered for sale at the Windfields Farm's annual yearling auction where he was bought for $84,000 () by the American minerals magnate and industrialist Charles W. Engelhard Jr., acting on the advice of the Irish trainer Vincent O'Brien. It was Engelhard's wife Jane who decided that the colt should be named after the dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. Nijinsky was shipped to Ireland, where he was trained by O'Brien at Ballydoyle, County Tipperary.

Forest Fletcher (April 27, 1888 - November 27, 1945) was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and died in Lexington, Virginia. Raised in Chicago, Fletcher attended the University of Notre Dame with his boyhood friend, legendary football player and coach Knute Rockne, with whom he shared Norwegian descent. As a track and field athlete, Fletcher competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden, finishing seventh men's standing high jump and ninth in the men's standing long jump. After college, he taught in Cedar City, Utah and Mitchell, South Dakota before being hired by Washington & Lee University where he served as cross country and track coach and athletic director.

The stone-carver and letterer was William Silver Frith, and the architect was Sir Aston Webb, who was President of the Royal Academy from 1919 to 1925. Alfred Edward Flaxman (1 October 1879 - 1 July 1916) was a British track and field athlete who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was born in Wombwell, South Yorkshire and was killed in action in Gommecourt, Pas-de- Calais, France. In 1908, he participated in the discus throw competition, in the Greek discus throw event, in the freestyle javelin throw competition, and in the standing high jump event but in all these competitions his final ranking is unknown. Flaxman was killed in action during the First World War, serving as a second lieutenant with the South Staffordshire Regiment on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, aged 26.

He was also known for various long-standing high , including scoring 2,000 contiguous points in straight rail, 622 points in 18.2 balkline, and a run of 25 points in three-cushion. Kuala Lumpur Tower This tower is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and was a three-phase construction that started in 1991 and completed in 1995. This standing high tower is in the modernist technological idiom, but the base features some Islamic decoration, and the shape of the tower has been likened to the Javanese dagger, or keris. Mahmood's activity level increased in the 21st century, and his projects initially seemed to reflect international postmodernism in which they took on the symbolic orthodoxy of international Islamic designs.

Titanic on sea trials, 2 April 1912 At the time of her entry into service on 2 April 1912, Royal Mail Steamer (RMS) Titanic was the second of three , and was the largest ship in the world. She and the earlier, , were almost one and a half times the gross register tonnage of Cunard's and , the previous record holders, and were nearly longer. Titanic could carry 3,547 people in speed and comfort, and was built on an unprecedented scale. Her reciprocating engines were the largest that had ever been built, standing high and with cylinders in diameter requiring the burning of of coal per day.

Croft had married Lily Newton on 21 February 1892, at Bedford New Town Chapel in St Pancras. He was survived by his wife and by eleven of their twelve children, his eldest son having been killed in action in the First World War. A life-sized marble statue of Croft, standing high, wearing a "smother" pearly tail-coat with top hat and cane, was commissioned in 1931 and erected at his burial site in 1934. After being vandalised several times, the statue was restored and removed to the crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields in 2002, where the Original Pearly Kings and Queens Society has held its harvest festival since 1956.

The New York World Building on Park Row, was the first to take the title in 1890, standing until 1955, when it was demolished to construct a new ramp to the Brooklyn Bridge. The nearby Park Row Building, with its 29 stories standing high, became the world's tallest office building when it opened in 1899. Lafayette records indicate that the first athletic meeting between the two schools was a series of baseball games played in Easton and Bethlehem in October 1869. The first game was a 45–45 tie, and Lafayette won the second meeting 31–24. The first joint athletic track and field event held between the two institutions was on May 14, 1881 on the grounds of the Lehigh University Athletic Association. In the early 1960s, Superintendent William H. Brown appealed to the Cherryville citizens and succeeded in levying, by public vote, a fifteen-cent tax increase to support the Cherryville City School System. In 1961 construction was completed on two additions at the CHS Campus: a free-standing high school cafeteria at corner of Pink Street and East First Street and the "Instrumental and Choral Music Building", attached to the north side of Starnes Auditorium. The Rudisill Memorial Football Stadium was built at a cost of $78,000 and was dedicated September 6, 1963. The Rudisill Foundation, created by C. A. Rudisill, contributed funding to build the brick stadium on the north-north/east portion of the CHS Campus.

The defences consisted of a stone wall about thick, fronted by three ditches and with a contemporary turf rampart to the rear, the area within the walls was . The northern and western sides were identified and sectioned in 1964 and the foundations of a wall at the south west corner were uncovered. On the western side a section of wall was found still standing high above shallow foundations but below the ploughed soil. The wall is believed to have been built within the period 275–325 CE. It is thought that the construction of these defences was related to a general uprising of the Welsh tribes, the Ordovices and Silures, that occurred at this time.

Built in 1922, North Dallas High School is one of the oldest standing high school buildings in the city of Dallas; Booker T. Washington High School was established in 1902 as the Dallas Colored High School, but its current building was constructed well afterward. The Grave Creek Mound in the Ohio River Valley in West Virginia is one of the largest conical-type burial mounds in the United States, now standing high and in diameter. The builders of the site, members of the Adena culture, moved more than 60,000 tons of dirt to create it about 250–150 BC. Present-day Moundsville has developed around it near the banks of the Ohio River. The first recorded excavation of the mound took place in 1838, and was conducted by local amateurs Abelard Tomlinson and Thomas Biggs. The largest surviving mound among those built by the Adena, this was designated a National Historic Landmark in the mid-20th century.

Early jumpers used either an elaborate straight-on approach or a scissors technique. In later years, soon then after, the bar was approached diagonally, and the jumper threw first the inside leg and then the other over the bar in a scissoring motion. Around the turn of the 20th century, techniques began to change, beginning with the Irish-American Michael Sweeney's Eastern cut-off. By taking off like the scissors and extending his spine and flattening out over the bar, Sweeney raised the world record to in 1895.

Platt Adams during the standing high jump competition at the 1912 Summer Olympics American coaches, including two-time NCAA champion Frank Costello of the University of Maryland, flocked to Russia to learn from Brumel and his coaches. However, it would be a solitary innovator at Oregon State University, Dick Fosbury, who would bring the high jump into the next century. Taking advantage of the raised, softer landing areas by then in use, Fosbury added a new twist to the outmoded Eastern Cut-off. He directed himself over the bar head and shoulders first, sliding over on his back and landing in a fashion which would likely have broken his neck in the old, sawdust landing pits.

The Placer County Grove, located just northwest of the Middle Fork/Duncan Creek confluence, is the northernmost and most isolated grove of giant sequoias in California. It contains six trees, believed to range from 1,000–2,000 years old; the Joffre Tree is the tallest, standing high. Mixed conifer and hardwood forest along the Middle Fork near Oxbow Reservoir Due to fire suppression since the beginning of the 20th century, white fir has become more prevalent in the mixed-conifer forests while some pines, especially yellow pine and sugar pine, have declined significantly. Fuel loading in forests has increased due to interruption of the natural fire cycle, leading to an increase in the number and intensity of fires in recent decades.

It measures , is twelve stories tall and is one of the oldest standing high-rises in Chicago. It has a unique style with exterior load-bearing walls and an interior steel frame. LaSalle was one of three streets in Chicago to have a tunnel under the Chicago River, the other two being W. Washington St. and W. Van Buren St. Constructed in 1869-71, the long tunnel alleviated interruptions from bridge openings due to heavy river traffic and served as an escape route during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Originally open to only pedestrians and private vehicles, the LaSalle tunnel was turned over to cable car companies in the 1880s, since it was impossible for cable car systems to span the movable bridges.

The pipes had an average gradient of around 10 inches per mile (16 cm per km), but the gradient was not uniform, and there was a high point on Breach Hill Lane, to the south of Chew Stoke. To prevent an air lock forming, an open vent was constructed, sufficiently high to ensure that water could not escape through it, and a stone obelisk was constructed around it, standing high. A reservoir was constructed at Barrow Gurney to receive the water, and because the springs at Chewton were the source of the River Chew, the company was required to build three compensation reservoirs, so that the flow in the river could be maintained. Two were constructed at Litton, with a third on the Winford Brook near Chew Magna.

The hoard in its entirety comprises two large gold torcs, three smaller gold bracelets, a fragment of bronze rod or wire, and an undecorated fineware post-Deverel- Rimbury type bowl with a brown ceramic fabric, standing high. The heaviest item (see specifications below, item 1) weighed ; the second torc and bracelet (items 2 and 4 respectively), following X-ray fluorescence analysis at the British Museum, contained the largest amount of gold at 85% each. High Park North falls entirely within the boundaries of the town of Toronto Junction, which was purchased from the Keele estate in 1882 by Daniel Clendenan who subdivided the farm and racetrack for a residential district (now called High Park North) to serve the Junction commercial district. As Bloor Street was still an uneven and a mostly undeveloped street, early housing in the area was concentrated to the north and east, where it was easier to access the stores and industry along Dundas Street. High Park Avenue in particular was the site of many early homes of the Junction wealthy, as was modern Evelyn Crescent; many of these houses are still standing. High Park North emerged as a neighbourhood once Bloor Street was widened and evened out following World War I, when most of the residential homes which still exist today were built.

The Madoff family gained unusual access to Washington's lawmakers and regulators through the industry's top trade group. The Madoff family maintained long-standing, high-level ties to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), the primary securities industry organization. Bernard Madoff sat on the board of directors of the Securities Industry Association, which merged with the Bond Market Association in 2006 to form SIFMA. Madoff's brother Peter then served two terms as a member of SIFMA's board of directors. Peter's resignation as the scandal broke in December 2008 came amid growing criticism of the Madoff firm's links to Washington, and how those relationships may have contributed to the Madoff fraud. Over the years 2000–08, the two Madoff brothers gave $56,000 to SIFMA, and tens of thousands of dollars more to sponsor SIFMA industry meetings.

He is obviously super strong at high altitude. The length of some of his summit days – in terms of vertical altitude gain and the number of hours he stayed on his feet – would have polished off most of us before we were halfway through them. The term "gritty" is often used to describe Lock, and he is noted for his understated and self- depreciating manner. Unusually for a long-standing high-altitude climber, Lock has lost no digits to frostbite. Climbing all 14 eight-thousanders, and surviving, is an uncommon feat as the deaths-to-summits ratio on some of the mountains is at one-in-five (including Annapurna, K2, Nanga Parbat, Kangchenjunga), and it often takes more than one attempt, on average, to climb an eight-thousander (Lock has an overall eight-thousander success rate of circa 50%).

McMurray identified these changes as a movement away from a belief that the denomination was "the restored church" and towards an admittedly unique position in mainstream Christianity. As the first president of the RLDS Church who was not a direct descendant of Joseph Smith, McMurray sought to formalize changes in thinking about prophetic leadership, the historical basis of the Book of Mormon, and the concept that priesthood authority had been restored in the 1830s after centuries of apostasy. During his presidency, the church moved from closed communion to open communion, and McMurray began to open the door to priesthood ordination for non-celibate gay people, something which he acknowledged was occurring anyway. A backlash on this issue forced McMurray to reaffirm the official policy of the Standing High Council, which prohibited the ordination of sexually active gays and lesbians.

Although the office (if not the role) seems to no longer be generally viewed as an actual office, the church could reverse this perception if it so wished, as its existence is provided for in church scripture, and it could be argued that since it is a scriptural office of priesthood (as opposed to simply a position held by a priesthood member, such as a pastor) that those who become members of the Standing High Council still serve in a distinct office. Furthermore, Section 17:17 uses the actual words "high councilor", and notes that they, like bishops and high priests, are ordained. This clearly indicates that, contrary to current custom, perception, and terminology, the high councilor is most definitely an actual office of priesthood. Section 104:15 suggests that this body, like the Seventy, are equal to the Twelve Apostles.

Five months after being damaged in the September 11 attacks, Fritz Koenig's The Sphere, which once stood at the center of the plaza of the World Trade Center a few blocks away, was reinstalled in a temporary location in the northern section of the park. It was located near the Netherlands memorial flagpole in the northeast corner of the park before being moved to Liberty Park in the new World Trade Center in late 2017. The Sphere, standing high, was meant to symbolize world peace through world trade, and was, at its original location, in the center of a ring of fountains to mimic the Masjid al-Haram, Great Mosque of Mecca; The Sphere had stood at the place in the World Trade Center where the Kaaba was in the Masjid al-Haram. After 2001, it became a World Trade Center memorial as well; a plaque alongside The Sphere reads as follows: Within the park is Hope Garden, a memorial dedicated to AIDS victims, where The Sphere had been exhibited at times.

His record of winning three gold medals in one event, although it had subsequently been equaled by seven other athletes, was not surpassed for 60 years—from 1908 until Al Oerter won his fourth gold (discus throw) in 1968, a feat equaled by Carl Lewis when he won his fourth (long jump) in 1996, Michael Phelps when he won his fourth (200 meter individual medley) in 2016, and by Kaori Icho when she won her fourth consecutive gold in women's wrestling in 2016. Finally, his record of three gold medals in two events, set in July 1908 (standing long jump on July 20 and standing high jump on July 23) was not surpassed for 108 years—until in 2016 Michael Phelps won his third gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly to win three gold medals in three events (200-meter individual medley, 100-meter butterfly, and 200-meter butterfly).
