In Konami's series of TMNT games based on the 2003 cartoon series, April resembles her cartoon counterpart and often shows up in various cutscenes to give advice and advance the plot of the game. April appears as a playable character in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters for the NES, where her game character bears little resemblance to the 1987 cartoon likeness. In TMNT: Mutant Melee, April is again a playable character and participates in multi-player battles. Mnasyllus suggest that, instead of arguing further, Astylus and Lycidas should sing about their respective beloveds, Petale and Phyllis. Lycidas requests that Mnasyllus should judge them by the same standards as he did in an earlier contest between Astylus and Ancanthus. This seems to provoke further confrontation between Astylus and Lycidas, and each makes insinuations about each other: Astylus says he is looking forward to the public revelations of certain unspecified misdeeds of Lycidas, Lycidas indirectly accuses Lycidas of kissing a boy or man called Mopsus. Astylus suggests that, were it not for the fact that Mnasyllus is around, he would smash up Lycidas's face.

On January 4, 2006, while on display in the Dada show in the Pompidou Centre in Paris, Marcel Duchamp's Fountain was attacked with a hammer by Pierre Pinoncelli, a 77-year-old French performance artist, causing a slight chip. The film is set on Interstate 5 in California on the date of July 4, 24 hours before the summer vacation will officially commence. From the beginning, California Highway Patrol sergeant Sam Marcum (Robert Conrad) announces in a voice-over that a 39-car smash-up will be the cause of 62 injured people and fourteen deaths. A selection of the people involved are followed up to 48 hours preceding the accident. Other than Sam, who is chasing the murderer of his colleague on the highway, the film focuses on the elderly couple Al and June Pearson (Buddy Ebsen and Harriet Nelson), who are setting out to a beach resort to forget the fact that June is suffering from a terminal disease.

Karai is a fictional character in various installments of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and related media, where she is usually a high-rank member of the Foot Clan outlaw ninja organization. She was originally introduced in Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's comic book series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1993. Since then, she has appeared in several different TMNT comics, cartoons and films, as well as in about a dozen video games (including as a playable character in Tournament Fighters, Battle Nexus and Smash-Up). In some incarnations of the character (including the 2003 animated series, the 2012 animated series, the 2018 animated series, and the 2010s comics), she is closely related to the villain Shredder as his adopted daughter or biological daughter.

The novel Expressway (1973) by Elleston Trevor, writing under the pseudonym "Howard North," is set during a busy 4th of July weekend, and depicts a group of New Jersey State Troopers trying to keep a lid on crime and traffic problems during that period. It was adapted into a TV movie titled Smash-Up on Interstate 5, changing the setting from a New Jersey turnpike to a California freeway, and changing the police from New Jersey State Troopers to officers of the California Highway Patrol. Bruce Springsteen's album Nebraska (1982) contains the dark song "State Trooper" in which a traveller on the New Jersey Turnpike, a desperate man who has committed unknown crimes, hopes that he won't be pulled over by a State Trooper. This song was used in The Sopranos.

Frome is described by the narrator as "the most striking figure in Starkfield", "the ruin of a man" with a "careless powerful look ... in spite of a lameness checking each step like the jerk of a chain". Curious, the narrator sets out to learn about him. He learns that Frome's limp arose from having been injured in a "smash-up" twenty-four years before, but further details are not forthcoming, and the narrator fails to learn much more from Frome's fellow townspeople other than that Ethan's attempt at higher education decades before was thwarted by the sudden illness of his father following an injury, forcing his return to the farm to assist his parents, never to leave again. Because people seem not to wish to speak other than in vague and general terms about Frome's past, the narrator's curiosity grows, but he learns little more.

During the game as the unbelievable news began to filter in that Hearts had blown their chance of winning the title the Hibs boys exuberantly began to smash up the plastic seats in their section of the stadium, throwing them about and singing “lost the league, lost the league, lost the league” to which the Newcastle mob joined in with the singing and vandalism. However, in the next season when West Ham United were playing in Newcastle the Hibs mob wanted to have the chance to take on one of the superior crews in England, the Inter City Firm, and opted to turn up unannounced. A large mob of CCS arrived at the Newcastle boys pub and volunteered to offer their services much to the chagrin of the Newcastle hooligans who expressed their dissatisfaction at the Hibs boys presence in such numbers and at the way they were again seemingly wanted to run the show.

Despite Eisenhower's advice not to accept the ambassadorship, Lodge told him that he felt it was his patriotic duty to accept, saying that the Cabot Lodges had always served the United States regardless if the president was a Democrat or a Republican, and he was not going to break with his family's traditions. On 22 August 1963, Lodge landed in Saigon, a city that was in turmoil with the much of the population marching in protests demanding Diem's resignation as the previous night, Nhu had ordered his Special Forces to raid and sack Buddhist temples all over South Vietnam. In Saigon, the Xa Loi Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Saigon, was stormed by the Special Forces shortly after midnight, who proceeded to smash up and loot the temple while arresting 400 monks and nuns. The news that the all Catholic Special Forces had desecrated Buddhist temples and assaulted and sometimes killed monks and nuns outraged the Buddhist majority and noticeably, many of the young people participating in the marches came from the middle and upper-class families that previously formed the bedrock of support for Diem.

In May 1943, in Mobile, Alabama, when the local shipyard promoted some Black men up to be trained as welders, white workers rioted and seriously injured 11 of their Black co-workers. In Los Angeles, the Zoot Suit riots of 3–8 June 1943 saw white servicemen attacking Chicano (Mexican-American) and Black youths for wearing zoot suits. On 15 June 1943, in Beaumont, Texas, a pogrom saw a white mob smash up Black homes while lynching 2 Black men. In Detroit, which expanded massively during the war years with 50, 000 Black people from the South and 200, 000 "hillbilly" whites from Appalachia moving to the city to work in the factories, competition for sparse rental housing had pushed tensions to the brink. On 20 June 1943, false rumors that a white mob had lynched 3 Black men led to an outbreak of racial rioting in Detroit that left 34 dead, of whom 25 were Black. On 1–2 August 1943, another race riot in Harlem left 6 Black people dead. Politically, Black people left the Republican Party and joined the Democratic New Deal Coalition of President Franklin D.
