It has been argued that the "servant" represents the nation of Israel, which would bear excessive iniquities, pogroms, blood libels, anti- judaism, antisemitism and continue to suffer without cause () on behalf of others (Isaiah 53:7,11–12). Early on, the servant of the Lord is promised to prosper and "be very high". The following evaluation of the Servant by the "many nations, kings", and "we" is quite negative, though, and bridges over to their self-accusation and repentance after verse 4 ("our").

Harden outed Eulenburg on April 27, 1907, confirming the identity he previously had parodied as "the Harpist" (Eulenburg), after outing "Sweetie" General Kuno Graf von Moltke in 1906. Wilhelm II, informed of the growing story, responded by requiring the resignation of three of fifteen prominent aristocrats, Hohenau, Moltke, and Count Johannes von Lynar, listed as homosexual by the Berlin vice squad; however, the actual list, not shown to Wilhelm II, contained several hundred names. Moltke's lawyer attempted to file criminal libel against Harden, but was dismissed and civil libel was suggested. Eulenburg denied any culpability and presented a self-accusation of violating the applicable Paragraph 175 to his district attorney who, as hoped and expected, cleared Eulenburg of all charges in July.

Max Beckmann, like other artists associated with Neue Sachlichkeit, enlisted in the German army and originally rationalized World War I. Initially, like Futurist artists, Beckmann believed war could cleanse the individual and society. After experiencing the widespread destruction and horror of the war, however, he became disillusioned with war and rejected the supposed glory of military service. The Night's illogical composition relays post-war disillusionment and the artist's confusion over the “... society he saw descending into madness” (Kleiner et al.). Although The Night does not directly depict a specific battle or war scene, the image is considered one of the most poignant and seminal pieces of post-war art. Author Stephan Lackner writes: > “But Beckmann sees no purpose in the suffering he shows; there is no glory > for anybody, no compensation, ... Beckmann blames human nature as such, and > there seems to be no physical escape from this overwhelming self-accusation.
