In the early 1950s, working with a mere handful of contemporaries, Yip Cheong Fun faced many difficulties, as described by Choy Weng Yang, former curator at the National Museum of Singapore. Among the difficulties were: an unsympathetic environment, scantiness of reference material, inadequate equipment, and a lack of guidance and direction. When the Palsgrave's Men received their renewed charter and their new name on 4 January 1613, Gunnell was already a sharer in the company. He sketched two other chiefesses: Queen Kamāmalu (Kamahamarou), the favorite wife of Kamehameha II, and Keōuawahine (Kéohoua), the wife of Kuakini, Governor of the island of Hawaii. Some of his sketches also depicted traditional signs of mourning such as head shaving and body marking for the recently deceased king. Freycinet's wife Rose de Freycinet, who accompanied him on the expedition, gave a brief description of Likelike after meeting her: "This woman is quite young and has a rather pleasant face; she is less corpulent than the other women I have encountered, and the scantiness of her clothing is less shocking." The following year in 1914, Jean- Philippe Worth, designer for the renowned Paris couture House of Worth, had a client object to the thickness of the taffeta lining of her dress, which was described as "thinner than a cigarette paper". Worth stated that using an even thinner, sheerer lining fabric would have had the effect of an "x‑ray dress". In Australia, an article was published in The Daily Telegraph on the 24th of November 1913 strongly opposed to "freak dresses" and "peek-a-boo blouses" that had lately become the fashion in "other Capitals". The editorial complains of dresses of "exiguous transparancy and undue scantiness" and "the low-cut blouse that invites pneumonia".

In the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedic texts, Mitra is mostly indistinguishable from Varuna, together with whom Mitra forms a dvandva pair Mitra-Varuna, and in which Mitra-Varuna has essentially the same characteristics as Varuna alone. Varuna is not only the greater of the two, but also - according to RV 2.12 - the second-greatest of the RigVedic gods after Indra. Rigvedic hymns to Mitra-Varuna include RV 1.136, 137, 151–153, RV 5.62-72, RV 6.67, RV 7.60-66, RV 8.25 and RV 10.132. Mitra is addressed independently in one hymn only RV 3.59, where he has hardly any traits that distinguish him from Varuna, and owing to the scantiness of the information supplied in that hymn his separate character appears somewhat indefinite.

In childhood, he developed a great admiration for the work of the ancient Greek writer Plutarch. Despite the scantiness of Vauvenargues's oeuvre, it has attracted considerable interest. The adaptation was well-received amongst contemporaries.. In 1756, the Irish playwright Arthur Murphy wrote his The Orphan of China.. He stated that he had been attracted by Premare's play, but his play even more resembles Voltaire's L'Orphelin de la Chine. Murphy's Orphan of China was first performed in April 1759 and became highly successful in England.. In his 1759 edition, Murphy criticized Voltaire for adding a theme of love—which he thought was unsuitable in this play—and for having a "scantiness of interesting business". He also reasserted the story of revenge, which was omitted in Voltaire's play.. In Murphy's adaptation, the virtuous people killed the leader of the Tartars. Although different, his play approached the original Chinese play closer than any other European adaption of the time.
