When Trump criticized NATO, worked against European unity, criticized other democratic leaders, praised foreign dictators, attacked the free press, praised WikiLeaks, attacked a former FBI director in a closed meeting with the Russian foreign minister, criticized the FBI counter-intelligence investigation, failed to unequivocally restate America's commitment under NATO to defend allies from outside attack, suggested a preference for far-right extremists such as Marine Le Pen in France, fomented bitter political divisions at home, repeatedly violated America's tradition of supporting human rights and collapsed America's global image, per a Pew Research poll, he helps Putin attack America while his administration is being investigated about ties to Russia.

If the left is to wait until the time is ripe for a pan-European transformation, it will simply continue in practice to endorse the neoliberal policies of the EU. The fantasy that one day in some unspecifiable future it will secure its goal will disable it from taking the only actual course of action that is readily available — namely, to use the existing democratic state machinery in most European countries, which the EU has never wholly dismantled, and to restate the principles of democratic socialism as they were understood in postwar Europe and as they have now been revived (to some extent) by Bernie Sanders in the US. Once this is done, we can think about rebuilding European institutions in such a way that we are never again locked into these kinds of constraints, but it has to be this way around.

To achieve this reformulation of the values, there are several steps Uber should undertake:work with an established and respected organization that is experienced in organizational change to restate the values with significant input from employees; consider further defining the values in a manner more accessible to and more easily understood by employees; adopt values that are more inclusive and contribute to a collaborative environment, including emphasizing teamwork and mutual respect, and incorporating diversity and inclusiveness as a key cultural value, not just as an end in itself, but as a fundamental aspect of doing good business; reduce the overall number of values, and eliminate those values which have been identified as redundant or as having been used to justify poor behavior, including Let Builders Build, Always Be Hustlin', Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping, and Principled Confrontation; and encourage senior leaders to exhibit the values on a daily basis and to model a more collaborative and inclusive Uber culture.
