Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over the celebration on the pope's behalf in the Coutances Cathedral.
The documents were placed in sealed boxes to be transported to the C.C.S. in Rome for assessment. The C.C.S. validated the process on 9 March 2012 and received the Positio dossier from the postulation in 2015 for further investigation. Theologians advising the C.C.S. approved the cause on 17 December 2015 while the C.C.S. members themselves also approved it on 19 April 2016. Pope Francis approved the findings and on 26 April 2016 confirmed that the 38 individuals had died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) thus approving their beatifications.
He shared the popular odium which Philip incurred by debasing the coinage. He acted as the agent of Philip in his contest with Louis, Count of Nevers, the son of Robert III of Flanders, imprisoning Louis and forcing Robert to surrender Lille, Douai and Béthune. He obtained for his half-brother Philip de Marigny in 1301 the bishopric of Cambrai, and in 1309 the archbishopric of Sens, and for his brother Jean in 1312 the bishopric of Beauvais. Still another relative, Nicolas de Frauville, became the king's confessor and a cardinal.
The beatification cause for the Servant of God commenced in Morelia in October 1957 and concluded its work in June 1959. The process was ratified in 1992 and the Positio - documentation on his murder being "in odium fidei" - was sent to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 1994. Pope John Paul II approved the decision that Castillo died in hatred of the faith and beatified him on 12 October 1997.Table of Beatifications during the Pontificate of His Holiness John Paul II A miracle attributed to him was discovered and was investigated.
The congregation then submitted the positio for theological assessment. The theological experts approved the dossier on 28 May 2016, as did the congregation sometime in mid-2017. On 7 July 2017, Pope Francis approved the work of the congregation with its declaration that Ramírez had been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and that he would soon be beatified along with his compatriot, Bishop Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve executed by leftist guerillas in 1950. The pope himself presided over the beatification in Villavicencio on 8 September 2017, during his apostolic visit to Colombia.
He was Minister of State under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1967 to 1977 including as Minister of State with Independent Charge of Information and Broadcasting. Despite a versatile career, Shukla's role as Information and Broadcasting Minister during the Emergency period had got him some odium as propagandist for Indira Gandhi’s government. His ministry attracted adverse attention for the media censor policy during that period when Freedom of speech was under attack. The Justice Shah Commission of Inquiry which went into the Emergency excesses, was stunned when V. C. Shukla owned entire responsibility for the functioning of his ministry.
Both assassins then undressed the corpses of both Calungsod and San Vitores, tied large stones to the feet, and after loading these on their proas, dumped the bodies out in Tumon Bay. The Catholic Church considers Calungsod's martyrdom to have been committed In Odium Fidei ('In Hatred of the Faith').''Pietro Calungsod, catechista, che per odio verso la fede cristiana furono uccisi e gettati in mare da alcuni apostati e seguaci locali di superstizioni pagane.'' Translation: Peter Calungsod, catechist, due to hatred of the Christian faith was killed and thrown overboard by some apostates and followers of local pagan superstitions. Vatican.va.
Graham re-introduced the bill on 7 March 1843,Hansard, 7 March 1843 vol67 cols 422–424 which when passed allowed children aged between 8 and 13 to work 6.5 hours per day, with 3.5 hours of education, and women and young persons a maximum of 12 hours each day. Northern reformers expressed a hatred for Graham; after a fierce parliamentary battle, the bill finally received royal assent after both Peel and Graham threatened to resign. As home secretary he incurred considerable odium in Scotland, by his unconciliating policy on the church question prior to the Disruption of 1843.
The C.C.S. validated this diocesan investigation on 19 September 2014 while the postulation compiled and submitted the Positio dossier to the C.C.S. for assessment at a later stage. Theologians approved it on 6 April 2017 as did the C.C.S. members some months later on 17 October. Pope Francis confirmed on 8 November 2017 that Sgorbati was killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and confirmed that her beatification would take place. The beatification took place on 26 May 2018 in Piacenza with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding over the celebration on the behalf of the pope.
In 722 Charles Martel forcefully subdued the duchies of Alamannia and Bavaria but in the following year both duchies again rose against Carolingian supremacy.R. Schieffer, Die Karolinger, p. 42 In 724 Pirmin founded the Reichenau Abbey under the protection of Charles Martel, Lantfrid and Theudebald considered this a provocation and in 727 Theudebald ob odium Karoli ("out of hatred against Charles") evicted first Pirmin and, in 732, his successor Heddo from Reichenau. The Abbey of St. Gall, however, founded 719 by the Alamannic monk Otmar, was favoured by the dukes of Alamannia and the regional aristocracy.
Jeoldusan Shrine The Museum-Shrine, which contains rooms for liturgical celebration and prayer, was built in 1967 on the site in Jeoldusan, where many of the Korean martyrs died from 1866 to 1873. The Shrine-Museum presents numerous historical documents, visual reconstructions, photographs and documentaries. The Christian community suffered harsh persecutions, especially in the second half of the 1800s. In 2004 the Archdiocese of Seoul opened its investigation into the cause for beatification of the Servant of God Paul Yun Ji-Chung and his 123 companions who in 1791 were tortured and killed in odium fidei, in hatred of the faith.
Maurice Tornay (31 August 1910 – 11 August 1949) was a Swiss Roman Catholic priest of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine – of the Hospitallers of Saint Nicholas and Grand-St-Bernard of Mont Joux branch – who served as part of the missions in China and Tibet. He fought against anti-religious sentiment in the Tibetan area and was killed while he travelled to meet with the Dalai Lama. He was beatified – on 16 May 1993 – after Pope John Paul II confirmed that the late priest had been killed "in odium fidei" ('in hatred of the faith').
Mateo Elías Nieves Castillo (21 September 1882 – 10 March 1928) was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest who was also a member of the Order of Saint Augustine who assumed the name of Elias del Socorro when he became a member of the order.Elias do Socorro Nieves (1882-1928) Article in Spanish Pope John Paul II beatified him on 12 October 1997 without a miracle because he was killed "in odium fidei" and therefore did not require a miracle. Instead it was proved that he was killed in hatred of the faith. A miracle is now under investigation for prospective sainthood.
The beatification process opened in Natal on 6 June 1989 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the official "nihil obstat" and titled them all as Servants of God. The diocesan process spanned from 1989 until 1994 and the C.C.S. later validated this process on 25 November 1994 before receiving the Positio in 1998. The theologians approved the cause on 23 June 1998 as did the C.C.S. on 10 November 1998. Pope John Paul II confirmed that the group were all killed "in odium fidei" (in hated of the faith) and thus approved their beatifications.
He was then recommended by Zhao Ding, and was appointed to the Court of Sacrificial Worship; but before long he incurred the odium of Qin Gui, whose peace policy with the Tartars he strenuously opposed. He had been on terms of intimacy with a Buddhist priest, named Zong Guo (宗果); and he was accused of forming an illegal association and slandering the Court. "This man," said the Emperor, "fears nothing and nobody," and sent him into banishment; from which he returned, upon Qin Gui's death, to be Magistrate at Wenzhou. He was canonised as Wenzhong (文忠).
A key goal was control of the port city of Batumi on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, in addition to several strategic points in the Caucasus. Most important Bulgaria was greatly enlarged to serve as the dominant power in the Balkans, and be under Russian control. France, Germany and Austria objected and radically reduced Russia's gains at the Berlin Congress (13 June to 13 July 1878). Gorchakov was honored as first plenipotentiary but he left to the second plenipotentiary, Count Shuvalov, not only the task of defending Russian interests but also the responsibility and odium for the concessions which Russia had to make to Britain and Austria.
Fouad obtained a bachelor's degree in information technology at Honim College and obtained a master's degree in international business at Vlekho College in Brussels. Fouad attended the Parallax school of Actors and The Flanders Acting Studio, where he intensively studied Method acting, Meisner technique and emotional preparation. Fouad portrayed the role of ‘Rachid’ opposite Luk Wyns in the award winning film Ou Quoi directed by Cecilia Verheyden, which won Best Fiction Début at the International ShortFilm Festival Leuven and the role of ‘Javed’ in the award-nominated 2011 Odium, directed by Neale Hemrajani. Late 2010, Fouad signs with a US talent agency and moves to Los Angeles.
During the International Women's Year of 1975 the Australian Science Minister ordered that tropical cyclones, within the Australian region, should carry both men's and women's names. This was because the minister thought "that both sexes should bear the odium of the devastation caused by cyclones." As a result, male names were added to the lists of names for both basins, ahead of the 1975-76 season. The practice of retiring significant names was started during 1955 by the United States Weather Bureau in the Northern Atlantic basin, after hurricanes Carol, Edna, and Hazel struck the Northeastern United States and caused a significant amount of damage in the previous year.
Rentoul was somewhat frail- looking but was in reality strong and active, showing much endurance during his yearly trout-fishing holidays in New Zealand. He was interested in the Australian Aborigines and all oppressed people, and incurred some odium by taking up the cause of the Boers at the time of the Second Boer War. Rentoul was a fine scholar, learning all his life, and his erudition, keen wit, versatility, strength of conviction, and scorn of compromise, made him a remarkable preacher and lecturer. As a debater he had great readiness in retort, and in developing his argument his words flowed with an almost volcanic passion.
Blessed Engelmar Unzeitig (1 March 1911 – 2 March 1945), born Hubert Unzeitig, was a German Roman Catholic priest who died in the Dachau Concentration Camp during World War II on the charge of being a priest. He was a professed member of the Mariannhill Missionaries and assumed the name of "Engelmar" when he was admitted into the order. He became known as the "Angel of Dachau". In 2016, Pope Francis recognized the fact that Unzeitig died in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith) and Unzeitig was subsequently beatified on 24 September 2016 in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato acting on the pope's behalf.
Stanley Francis Rother (March 27, 1935 – July 28, 1981) was an American Roman Catholic priest from Oklahoma who was murdered in Guatemala. Ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City in 1963, he held several parish assignments there until 1968 when he was assigned as a missionary priest to Guatemala where he was murdered in 1981 in his Guatemalan mission rectory. On December 1, 2016, Pope Francis issued a decree confirming that Rother had been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) which would allow him to be beatified. Rother was beatified on September 23, 2017, during a Mass at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
Written objections to this aspect of Life could be found in the writings of Muslims living inside the Empire only after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, an unsuccessful uprising against the British East India Company. However, a contemporary review in The Times criticized Life for "propagandist writing" with Christian bias and for "odium theologicum". D. S. Margoliouth concurs that despite the classic status of Muir's Life, it is in fact "written with a confessedly Christian bias". Contemporary historian E. A. Freeman praised the book as a "great work", yet questioned its conjectural methodology, particularly the "half timid suggestion" made by Muir that Muhammad had fallen under the influence of Satanic inspiration.
This project evolved into Chmielarz's first commercially released video game, the 1993 point-and-click adventure Tajemnica Statuetki. Some of Chmielarz's next projects, such as another point-and-click adventure game Teenagent (1995), scrolling shooter Katharsis (1997), and tactical role-playing game Gorky 17 (1999, known as Odium in North America), have been published also outside Poland. Due to an internal conflict, Chmielarz left Metropolis in 1999. Founding the video game development studio People Can Fly in 2002, he went on to create the successful first-person shooter Painkiller (2004) and its follow-ups Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell (2004), Painkiller: Hell Wars (2006), and Painkiller: Hell & Damnation (2012).
An appeal to spite (Latin: argumentum ad odium) is a fallacy in which someone attempts to win favor for an argument by exploiting existing feelings of bitterness, spite, or schadenfreude in the opposing party. It is an attempt to sway the audience emotionally by associating a hate-figure with opposition to the speaker's argument. Fallacious ad hominem arguments that attack villains holding the opposing view are often confused with appeals to spite. The ad hominem can be a similar appeal to a negative emotion, but differs from it in directly criticizing the villain—that is unnecessary in an appeal to spite, where hatred for the disfavored party is assumed.
Smith's letter attempted to cast the scheme in a sympathetic light. He wrapped himself in the flag and argued that he had been in seven engagements and had been wounded in the Battle of Shiloh. He portrayed himself as "one who took upon himself all the odium that the rebels and conservatives of Louisville, Kentucky, heaped upon him, by being the first officer, to my knowledge, who commenced mustering into service the colored man in Kentucky during the year 1863." Smith said that he had scoured Kentucky's prison pens, jails, and workhouses to find these men and that his only aim was to serve his God and his country properly.
Blessed Vicente Vilar David (28 June 1889 - 14 February 1937) was a Spanish engineer from Spain at the time of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s during a period of intense anti-clerical sentiment. As a worker he strove to adhere to the social doctrine of the Christian faith and spread such values in the workplace and among his colleagues. He was killed on the basis of aiding priests and religious escape the persecution by the Republicans during the Civil War. David was beatified on 1 October 1995 after Pope John Paul II recognized that he had been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith).

His nickname, "the Ohio Icicle," deserved or not, hindered his presidential ambitions. Garfield placated the pro-Grant faction by endorsing Chester A. Arthur as nominee for Vice President. Despite his good relations with Arthur in 1879, Sherman thought the choice a bad one: "The nomination of Arthur is a ridiculous burlesque," he wrote in a letter to a friend, "and I am afraid was inspired by a desire to defeat the ticket ... His nomination attaches to the ticket all the odium of machine politics, and will greatly endanger the success of Garfield." He was nearly correct, as Garfield eked out a narrow victory over the Democratic nominee Winfield Scott Hancock.
He brought with him, on his return, a letter to William Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville, from Lebrun, minister of war, who wished to make Williams a medium of communication between the two governments; but no notice was taken of it. An engagement previously entered into for completing the continuation of Hume's History of England was cancelled, owing to the political odium incurred by his visit to France. His History of Monmouthshire, 1796, with illustrations drawn and partly engraved by his friend Gardner, and a very modest introduction, was considered a standard work on the subject; unfortunately it has no index. After the peace of Amiens (1802) he again visited France.
The diagnosis of mental disease can serve as proxy for the designation of social dissidents, allowing the state to hold persons against their will and to insist upon therapies that work in favour of ideological conformity and in the broader interests of society. In a monolithic state, psychiatry can be used to bypass standard legal procedures for establishing guilt or innocence and allow political incarceration without the ordinary odium attaching to such political trials. Under the Nazi regime in the 1940s, the "duty to care" was violated on an enormous scale. In Germany alone 300,000 individuals that had been deemed mentally ill, work-shy or feeble-minded were sterilized.
He remained there until 1953, and also undertook postgraduate training in several European cities. Lawler's and Herde's recommendations led to Robert Menzies' decision to establish a Cabinet Office in Canberra as a separate and discrete part of the Prime Minister's Department. He became a Deputy Secretary of the Prime Minister's Department in 1964. He wrote the 1966 Cabinet decision that led to the abolition of the White Australia policy. In October 1967, as Acting Secretary, he was involved in the VIP aircraft affair that threatened the premiership of Menzies' successor Harold Holt, but used his experience and shrewdness to protect himself and escape the odium that was visited on Sir John Bunting.
Emperor Ōgimachi issued edicts to ban Catholicism in 1565 and 1568, but to little effect. Beginning in 1587 with imperial regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi's ban on Jesuit missionaries, Christianity was repressed as a threat to national unity. While the Japanese view was that Christians were persecuted and executed for being more loyal to Jesus than the Shogunate, the Catholic Church viewed them as martyrs: As the persecution was aimed at Christians as a group, and as they could escape only by abjuring their faith, the Catholic Church regarded the acts as being in odium fidei ("in hatred of the faith"), a principal factor in martyrdom. After the Tokugawa shogunate banned Christianity in 1614, it ceased to exist publicly.
At the royal library of Paris he discovered an Arabian manuscript containing the history of the Coptic Christians in Egypt from their origin to the fourteenth century, which he afterwards edited in Arabic and Latin: "Taki-eddini Makrizii historia Coptorum Christianorum in Ægypto" (Sulzbach, 1828). In 1828, Wetzer became professor-extraordinary, and in 1830 professor-ordinary, of Oriental philology at the University of Freiburg. Wetzer's interest in preserving the Catholic character of Freiburg, which had been founded and endowed as a Catholic university, incurred for him the odium of the Protestant professors, who, in the majority from 1846, excluded him from all academic positions. In 1850, Wetzer was appointed chief librarian of the university library.
Pope Benedict XVI approved that Hirschfelder died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) on 27 March 2010 and thus approved the beatification. Cardinal Joachim Meisner presided over the beatification on the pope's behalf in the Münster Cathedral on 19 September 2010 with about 4000 people in attendance. The previous week on 13 September saw the pope reference the late priest to the German ambassador at Castel Gandolfo as one of hundreds of priests killed in concentration camps during World War II. Archbishop Erwin Josef Ender attended the beatification as did Dominik Duka and Bishop Felix Genn of Münster. Meisner said in his remarks that Hirschfelder placed his trust in "the power of faith".
The beatification cause started in a diocesan process spanning from 1964 until closure on 18 February 1995 at which point the Congregation for the Causes of Saints validated it in Rome on 12 May 1995. The formal introduction came on 12 November 1993 and he was title as a Servant of God. The postulation sent the Positio to the C.C.S. in 1998 and theologians approved it later on 15 December 1998 as did the C.C.S. on 16 February 1999. Pope John Paul II approved his beatification on 26 March 1999 after confirming that Frelichowski died "in odium fidei" ("with odor of the faith") and so beatified him later while in Poland on 7 June 1999.
The diagnosis of mental disease can give the state license to detain persons against their will and insist upon therapy both in the interest of the detainee and in the broader interests of society. In addition, receiving a psychiatric diagnosis can in itself be regarded as oppressive. In a monolithic state, psychiatry can be used to bypass standard legal procedures for establishing guilt or innocence and allow political incarceration without the ordinary odium attaching to such political trials. In the period from the 1960s to 1986, the abuse of psychiatry for political purposes was reported to have been systematic in the Soviet Union and episodic in other Eastern European countries such as Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia.
The C.C.S. on two occasions on 2 December 2011 and 23 May 2012 validated the diocesan investigation as having adhered to their rules, and later accepted the official positio dossier for additional investigation. Theologians in 2018 voiced their assent to the cause and the C.C.S. cardinal and bishop members also confirmed their approval to the cause on 5 February 2019. Pope Francis – himself a Jesuit – cleared Moscoso for beatification after signing a decree on 12 February 2019 that recognized that the slain priest had been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith). The beatification was celebrated in Riobamba on 16 November 2019 with Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu presiding over the Mass on the pope's behalf.
Tomb. The beatification process commenced in 1969 - under Pope Paul VI - in an informative process that concluded in 1970 and accorded her the title of Servant of God as the first stage in the process; one of the main witnesses was the nun Gioacchina Miguel. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints validated the process in Rome on 21 June 1985 and assumed charge of the Positio in 1987 for further investigation. Her beatification received the approval of Pope John Paul II on 21 December 1989 after he determined that Prat had indeed died "in odium fidei" ('in hatred of the faith') and beatified Prat in Saint Peter's Square on 29 April 1990.
José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, also known as Blessed Miguel Pro, (born January 13, 1891 – executed November 23, 1927) was a Mexican Jesuit Catholic priest executed under the presidency of Plutarco Elías Calles on charges of bombing and attempted assassination of former Mexican President Álvaro Obregón.Marisol López-Menéndez, Miguel Pro Martyrdom, Politics, and Society in Twentieth-Century Mexico Rowman and Littlefield 2016; ; Pg. xiii Pro's arrest, lack of trial, and evidential support gained prominence during the Cristero War. Known for his religious piety and innocence, he was beatified in Rome on September 25, 1988, by Pope John Paul II as a Catholic martyr, killed in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith).Suro, Roberto.
He married at the time of his father's death in 1202, and that same year, went on the Fourth Crusade; he later fought in the Albigensian Crusade. However, in 1994, Yvan Lepage suggested that the poet may have been Jean I, father of Jean II, who was Lord of Nesle from 1180 to 1202; this Jean took part in the Third Crusade, which may explain the subsequent legend linking him with King Richard I of England. If the works are correctly identified and dated, he was a significant influence on his European contemporaries, who made much use of his melodies. (The melody of "L'amours dont sui espris" is used in Carmina Burana, for the song "Procurans Odium").
Blessed Carl Lampert (9 January 1894 - 13 November 1944) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest who served as the Pro-Vicar for the Diocese of Feldkirch in addition to being an outspoken critic of Nazism during World War II. This led to constant surveillance against him and his eventual arrests on several occasions. This all culminated with his final arrest in 1943 and his death from the guillotine in 1944 alongside a fellow Christian prisoner. He was declared to have been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and was beatified on 13 November 2011 in Austria; Cardinal Angelo Amato presided over it on the behalf of Pope Benedict XVI who had approved the cause.
The beatification process commenced under Pope John XXIII on 8 October 1960, and Kozal became titled as a Servant of God as a result; Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński opened the informative process on 8 October 1960, and this process later closed on 29 August 1964 with the Congregation for the Causes of Saints later validating the process on 27 September 1986 and receiving the Positio in 1987. Theologians approved the cause on 24 March 1987, as did the C.C.S. on 28 April 1987. On 8 May 1987 he was confirmed to have died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith), and so Pope John Paul II approved the beatification. John Paul II beatified Bishop Kozal during his visit to Poland on 14 June 1987.
Darío Acosta Zurita (14 December 1908 – 25 July 1931) was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest who administered in Veracruz where he lived and was killed. Zurita commenced his studies for the priesthood after he had once been refused entrance and he became known as an athletic seminarian. Bishop Rafael Guízar Valencia ordained him in 1931 and he was killed three months later after armed gunmen stormed the cathedral – enacting the so-called Tejeda Law – and shot him dead. Zurita's beatification cause commenced under Pope John Paul II on 3 September 1988 and he was beatified under Pope Benedict XVI on 20 November 2005 after the latter confirmed that Zurita had been killed 'in odium fidei' – in hatred of the faith.
Blessed Francesc de Paula Castelló Aleu (19 April 1914 – 29 September 1936) was a Spanish Roman Catholic killed during the Spanish Civil War on false accusations of fascism. Castelló was noted for his devout and outgoing nature in addition for his activism in Christian movements such as the Catholic Action; he had friends from these movements and in one met his fiancée though his death broke their soon-to-be union. He worked as a chemist for a time prior to conscription into the armed services on the eve of the civil war. His beatification was confirmed after Pope John Paul II – who beatified him on 11 March 2001 – acknowledged the fact that Castelló had been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith).
The midwives he wrote "raised an odium against my practice..." He had realised the risks involved in divulging the names, writing "I saw the danger of disclosing the fatal secret." As the midwives and women of Aberdeen turned against him, he bitterly described "the ungenerous treatment which I met with from that very sex whose sufferings I was at so much pains to relieve." By the end of his time in Aberdeen his patients, the midwives, fellow doctors, and the Aberdeen public had all become openly hostile toward him. Gordon's clear demonstration of the contagious nature of puerperal fever and his advocacy of disinfection of the hands and clothes of medical attendants was published 48 years before The Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever (1843) by Oliver Wendall Holmes.
Otto Neururer (25 March 1882 – 30 May 1940) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and was the first priest to die in a Nazi concentration camp. Neururer did his studies for the priesthood in Brixen before he served as a teacher and pastor in several cities before settling in 1932 in Götzens near Innsbruck. He was arrested in 1938 for attempting to persuade a girl not to be wed to a man of questionable morals and was sent to Dachau before being transferred to Buchenwald where he died after being hanged upside down. Neururer's beatification was celebrated on 24 November 1996 based on the fact that he died as a result of "in odium fidei" (the hatred of the faith).
Almost a century later, psychiatrist Sir James Crichton-Browne said of the book: "The Constitution of Man on its first appearance was received in Edinburgh with an odium theologicum, analogous to that afterwards stirred up by the Vestiges of Creation and On The Origin of Species. It was denounced as an attack on faith and morals.... read today, it must be regarded as really rather more orthodox in its teaching than some of the lucubrations of the Dean of St Paul's and the Bishop of Durham". Phrenologists from the Society applied their methods to the Burke and Hare murders in Edinburgh. Over the course of ten months in 1828, Burke and Hare murdered sixteen people and sold the bodies for dissection in the private anatomy schools.
While in the postwar years the majority SPD (MSPD) was cleared of its Nazi odium as "November Criminals", GDR historians blamed the SPD for "betrayal of the working class" and the USPD leadership for their incompetence. Their interpretation was mainly based on the 1958 theories of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany according to which the German Revolution was defined as a "bourgeois-democratic revolution", led in certain aspects by proletarian means and methods. The fact that a revolution by the working class in Germany never happened could be put down to the "subjective factor", especially the absence of a "Marxist-Leninist offensive party". Contrary to the official party line, Rudolf Lindau supported the theory that the German Revolution had a Socialist tendency.
He added that "formally, it is the bishop of the person's place of death to initiate the procedure." Anthony Fisher, the archbishop of Sydney, suggested he died in odium fidei ("in hatred of the faith"), adding, "This is a term Catholics use to describe the characteristic death of a martyr, as one who dies for his or her faith, and because of that faith." Pope Francis celebrates a special Mass for Hamel on 14 September 2016 On 14 September 2016, Pope Francis referred to Hamel as "blessed", a title used prior to canonisation. "This man accepted his martyrdom next to the martyrdom of Christ, on the altar," Pope Francis said on 14 September during a homily at a Mass held for Hamel's soul at the Vatican.
The process for Leclercq's sainthood commenced in Paris on 21 March 1901 in a diocesan process for himself and his fellow 190 compatriots killed at the same time as he. The process was tasked with collating biographical evidence on them and attesting to their being killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith); the process concluded on 5 February 1906. This occurred despite the fact that the formal introduction to the cause did not occur until it received the approval of Pope Benedict XV on 26 January 1916 in a move that labelled Leclercq as a Servant of God. The second process later was held and after it concluded received the full ratification of the Congregation of Rites in addition to the first process receiving ratification.
Sales plummeted, and the editor was denounced by delegates to the 1837 General Conference of Freewill Baptists, who put forward a motion calling for the paper to cease its campaign against slavery "so as to avert from the denomination the public odium heaped upon abolitionists, and to reconcile the disaffected members." The motion was defeated."Dover's anti- slavery paper never gave up the fight", Ed Wentworth, SeacoastNH.com, 1998 In 1841, in protest at the authorities' refusal to act to prevent attacks on black people and abolitionists in segregated railway carriages (including highly publicized incidents involving Charles Lenox Remond and David Ruggles) The Morning Star printed a call for readers to boycott the Eastern Railroad - a remarkable step at that time.
The beatification process opened under the Cardinal Archbishop of Vienna Theodor Innitzer in November 1932 and who closed the process in March 1943. The official Positio dossier was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome in 1984 with historians approving the cause on 16 May 1984 after having assessed the circumstances of their deaths in light of the historical context. Theologians also approved the cause on 15 December 1987 as did the C.C.S. members on 1 March 1988. The trio were approved for beatification on 28 March 1988 after Pope John Paul II confirmed the three friars were killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and beatified the missionaries on 20 November 1988 in Saint Peter's Basilica.
He was Minister for Defence from 1904 to 1905, during which he implemented long-lasting reforms, including the creation of the Military Board. As a soldier, McCay commanded the 2nd Infantry Brigade in the landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915, during the Gallipoli Campaign of the Great War. He was later wounded in the Second Battle of Krithia and invalided to Australia, but returned to command the 5th Division, which he led in the Battle of Fromelles in 1916, dubbed "the worst 24 hours in Australia's entire history." His failures in difficult military operations made him a controversial figure who earned the disfavour of his superiors, while his efforts to succeed in the face of insurmountable obstacles earned him the odium of troops under his command, who blamed him for high casualties.
The beatification process opened in Madrid in an informative process of investigation that was launched on 22 October 1962 and later closed in the archdiocesan cathedral on 15 February 1965; the Congregation for the Causes of Saints later validated the process on 14 December 1984 after two decades of inaction. The Positio dossier was drafted and sent to the C.C.S. in 1990 for additional assessment with theologians approving the cause's direction on 7 June 1996; the C.C.S. likewise approved the cause on 21 January 1997. Pope John Paul II confirmed her beatification on 8 March 1997 after confirming that Moragas had died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) which meant no miracle would be required for beatification. The pope presided over the beatification rites in Saint Peter's Square on 10 May 1998.

His former military hero's public image was changing: "he could not serve for long as the military executive of this extreme political, ultra-montane, pro-Spanish junta without attracting his share of odium," N. M. Sutherland has observed in describing the lead-up to his assassination. Coat of arms of the Duke of Guise The plan of the Triumvirate was to treat with Habsburg Spain and the Holy See, and also to come to an understanding with the Lutheran princes of Germany to induce them to abandon the idea of relieving the French Protestants. About July, 1561, Guise wrote to this effect to the Duke of Württemberg. The Colloquy at Poissy (September and October 1561) between theologians of the two confessions was fruitless, and the conciliation policy of Catherine de' Medici was defeated.

He has also voiced a variety of other games, many of which were published by Sierra Online.
Jaime Hilario Barbal (2 January 1898 – 18 January 1937) – born Manuel Barbal i Cosín – was a Catalan Roman Catholic and a professed religious brother from the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He served for almost two decades as a teacher in the schools that his order managed until being caught up in the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War that saw the forces of the Second Spanish Republic execute him. His beatification was celebrated on 29 April 1990 after it was confirmed that Barbal was killed "in odium fidei" ("in hatred of the faith") and the confirmation of a miracle attributed to his intercession allowed for Pope John Paul II to canonize him as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church on 21 November 1999.
Blessed Marguerite Rutan (23 April 1736 – 9 April 1794) was a French Roman Catholic religious person who was a professed member of the Vincentian Sisters. Rutan served as the mother superior of a hospital the sisters managed until the time of the French Revolution when she was executed based on the allegations of fanaticism and anti-Revolution sentiment. The process for beatification – the recognition that she died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) – commenced under Pope Benedict XV but was long and protracted; it seemed doomed after Rome suggested there was no local following (or "cultus") to Rutan. Later revival of the process allowed for Pope Benedict XVI to approve the beatification; Cardinal Angelo Amato – on the behalf of the pope – presided over the beatification on 19 June 2011.
Leningrad Special Psychiatric Hospital of Prison Type of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs was a psychiatric institution used by the Soviet authorities to suppress dissent. In a monolithic state, psychiatry can be used to bypass standard legal procedures for establishing guilt or innocence and allow political incarceration without the ordinary odium attaching to such political trials. In Nazi Germany in the 1940s, the 'duty to care' was violated on an enormous scale: A reported 300,000 individuals were sterilised and 100,000 killed in Germany alone, as were many thousands further afield, mainly in Eastern Europe. From the 1960s up to 1986, political abuse of psychiatry was reported to be systematic in the Soviet Union, and to surface on occasion in other Eastern European countries such as Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.
The beatification process started on 12 December 1991 under Pope John Paul II after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the official "nihil obstat" and titled Scheffler as a Servant of God. The diocesan process opened on 8 December 1994 and concluded a short time later on 5 December 1996 while the C.C.S. validated the process in Rome on 13 May 1998. The C.C.S. also received the Positio in 2002 for assessment which theologians approved on 1 July 2009 as did the C.C.S. on 20 April 2010. Pope Benedict XVI confirmed - on 1 July 2010 - that Scheffler was killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and thus approved his beatification which Cardinal Angelo Amato celebrated for the pope on 3 July 2011 in the bishop's old diocese.
The beatification cause opened on 29 March 1996 under Pope John Paul II after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the nihil obstat and titled Daronch as a Servant of God; the cause was joined to that of Father Manuel. The diocesan process was held from 1996 to 1997 with the C.C.S. validating the investigation on 4 December 1998. The postulation sent the Positio to the C.C.S. for assessment in 2001 at which point historians met and approved the dossier on 13 February 2001; theologians approved it as well on 26 September 2006 as did the C.C.S. cardinal and bishop members that 21 November. Daronch and Manuel's beatification received papal confirmation from Pope Benedict XVI a month later on 16 December after the pope confirmed that the pair were killed in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith).
The beatification process began on 14 January 1986 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the official "nihil obstat" to the cause and titled him as a Servant of God; the formal diocesan phase collecting documentation occurred in the Rabaul archdiocese from 21 January 1987 until 30 March 1989 when all documents were sealed in boxes and sent to Rome for the C.C.S. to review. The C.C.S. validated this inquest on 2 June 1989 and after received the Positio dossier from the postulation of the cause in 1991. Theologians approved the dossier's contents on 26 June 1992 as did the C.C.S. members on 1 December 1992. His beatification received approval from Pope John Paul II on 2 April 1993 after the pope confirmed that To Rot had been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith).
Giuseppe Girotti (19 July 1905 – 1 April 1945) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest and a professed member from the Order of Preachers. He served as a biblical scholar on both the Book of Wisdom and the Book of Isaiah and served as a professor of theological studies prior to World War II where he worked to aid Jewish people and to shield them from the Nazi Holocaust. But the priest was arrested in 1944 and moved from prison to prison before being imprisoned at the Dachau concentration camp where he befriended Josef Beran and Carlo Manziana. The beatification for the late priest was celebrated on 26 April 2014 in the Alba Cathedral after Pope Francis confirmed the Dominican had died "in odium fidei" or "in hatred of the faith"; Cardinal Severino Poletto celebrated the solemn Mass on the pope's behalf.
The beatification process commenced in a diocesan process that Cardinal Anastasio Ballestrero inaugurated in Turin on 20 March 1988 while it later closed under Giovanni Saldarini on 20 January 1990; the Congregation for the Causes of Saints later validated this process on 12 February 1994. The formal introduction to the cause came under Pope John Paul II on 13 January 1989 and Girotti became titled as a Servant of God. The C.C.S. received the official Positio dossier from the postulation in 2003 for assessment. Theologians asserted their belief that Girotti was killed for his faith on 20 January 2012 while the C.C.S. also came to the same conclusion on 5 February 2013; Pope Francis confirmed on 27 March 2013 that Girotti was killed "in odium fidei" ("in hatred of the faith") and thus confirmed the priest's impending beatification.
Due to the carnage of World War I, arms traders began to be regarded with odium as "merchants of death" and were accused of having instigated and perpetuated the war in order to maximize their profits from arms sales. An inquiry into these allegations in Britain failed to find evidence to support them. However, the sea change in attitude about war more generally meant that governments began to control and regulate the trade themselves. Stacks of shells in the shell filling factory at Chilwell during World War I. The volume of the arms trade greatly increased during the 20th century, and it began to be used as a political tool, especially during the Cold War where the United States and the USSR supplied weapons to their proxies across the world, particularly third world countries (see Nixon Doctrine).
The early linguist Leonard Bloomfield believed it necessary to develop linguistics as a cumulative, non-personal discipline; as a "genuine" science. In a talk in 1946, speaking of the development of the American Linguistics Society, he stated the fostering of such a discipline had saved it "from the blight of the odium theologicum and the postulation of schools . . . denouncing all persons who disagree or who choose to talk about something else," and he added "The struggle with recalcitrant facts, unyielding in their complexity, trains everyone who works actively in science to be humble, and accustoms him to impersonal acknowledgement of error." Philosopher and historian of science Thomas Samuel Kuhn argued that scientists are strongly committed to their beliefs, theories and methods (the collection of which he termed "paradigms"), and that science progresses mainly by paradigm shifts.
The beatification process started in Tarragona in 1944 and concluded a short time later in 1945 while the Congregation for the Causes of Saints later validated this process several decades later on 7 June 1985 in Rome; the postulation sent the Positio dossier to the C.C.S. in 1988 for assessment. Theological experts first approved on 24 February 1989 that he was killed "in odium fidei" ("in hatred of the faith") while the C.C.S. conceded the same thing in their meeting on 17 October 1989. Pope John Paul II confirmed on 21 December 1989 that Barbal was killed in hatred of his faith and then beatified Barbal on 29 April 1990. One miracle was required for his sanctification and when news reached the postulation about one such case it was investigated in the diocese of its origin.
Rolando Maria Rivi (7 January 1931 – 13 April 1945) was an Italian Roman Catholic seminarian. Rivi was noted for his studious and pious nature with an intense love for Jesus Christ which was evident through frequent confession and the reception of the Eucharist; he was amiable to all and wore his cassock with great pride to the point where he affirmed that he belonged to Christ and His Church. The Communist partisans murdered him "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) towards the end of World War II in Modena because he was learning to become a priest added with their extreme hatred of the faith. Rivi's holiness was well-noted in his lifetime and people began to hail him as a saint after his vicious murder in which people called for him to be beatified.
Elizabeth peremptorily called upon the bishops (January, 1564-65) to restore uniformity, and Parker with Grindal and others drew up a "Book of Articles", which he forwarded to William Cecil (3 March, 1564-65). To his intense annoyance they were not approved; but after many delays and alterations they were again submitted to Cecil (28 March, 1566), and published under the title of "Aduertisements, partly for due order in the publique administration of common prayers and usinge the holy sacraments, and partly for the apparell of all persons ecclesiasticall." Elizabeth withheld her formal assent and support; and the bishops were told to exercise their own lawful authority, and so made to bear all the odium their action aroused. The "Advertisements" recognize that it is impossible to get the cope worn at the communion service, and are content to enforce the use of the surplice.
The beatification process opened in Lleida in an informative process tasked with the collection of documentation in relation to his life and this process spanned from 2 February 1959 until its closure just over a decade later on 16 May 1971; the formal introduction to the cause came under Pope John Paul II on 22 July 1986 and he became titled as a Servant of God. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints later validated the informative phase in Rome on 18 November 1991 and received the Positio dossier from the postulation in 1992 for assessment. Theological advisors approved the cause on 10 November 2000 as did the cardinal and bishop members of the C.C.S. on 12 December 2000. John Paul II approved – on 18 December 2000 – that Castelló had been killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and thus approved the beatification.
The diocesan process for the investigation for the possible beatification cause was launched on 12 February 1959 under the direction of Archbishop Gregorio Modrego Casaus. But Pope Paul VI in 1964 suspended all causes related to those who were killed during the Spanish Civil War on the basis that further investigation was needed in order to determine if those proposed for canonization were killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and not for political purposes. These causes - which included that of Samsó - remained inactive until the pontificate of Pope John Paul II who decided enough time had passed and reactivated the causes. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the "nihil obstat" (no objections) decree to jumpstart the cause on 27 January 1996 and the diocesan process resumed on 13 March 1996 under Cardinal Ricardo María Carles Gordó and closed later on 18 March 1999.
Peck was involved in several land claim cases arising out of the Louisiana territory purchase; in one such case in 1825 he ruled against the client of the lawyer Luke Lawless and published his opinion in a St. Louis newspaper the following year. In response, Lawless posted an anonymous letter rebutting Peck's ruling in another newspaper. The authorship of the letter soon became known and Peck found Lawless in contempt of Court for: Intent to impair the public confidence in the upright intentions of said court, and to bring odium upon the court, and especially with intent to impress the public mind, and particularly many litigants in this court, that they are not to expect justice in the cases now pending therein. Peck had Lawless placed in jail for 24 hours and removed his right to practice in a federal court for 18 months.
The DNVP was secure in the knowledge that its vote would not cause the resumption of the war while the odium of Versailles would be borne by the other parties.Wheeler-Bennett, John The Nemesis of Power, London: Macmillan, 1967 page 207. Afterwards, the DNVP started a racist campaign against the presence of Senegalese and Vietnamese troops serving in the French army of occupation in the Rhineland (the so-called "Black Horror on the Rhine"), claiming that African and Asian men were genetically programmed to rape white women with DNVP politician Käthe Schirmacher (who was also a feminist) stating in a speech: "The lust of white, yellow and black Frenchmen for German women leads to daily violence!"Scheck, Raffael "Women on the Weimar Right: The Role of Female Politicians in the Deutschnationale Volkspartei" pages 547–560 from Journal of Contemporary History, Volume 36, Issue #4, October 2001 page 553.
The beatification process opened under Pope Benedict XVI on 30 September 2005 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the official "nihil obstat" (nothing against) to the cause and titled Rivi as a Servant of God. The diocesan phase for the cause opened in Modena on 7 January 2006 and concluded a short while later on 24 June 2006 before all documentation was sent to the competent authorities in Rome in boxes where the C.C.S. reviewed them and validated the process on 30 November 2007. The postulation compiled and sent the Positio dossier to the C.C.S. in 2010 which received theological approval on 18 May 2012 and that of the C.C.S. on 8 January 2013. Pope Francis confirmed on 27 March 2013 that Rivi was killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and thus approved for the beatification to take place.
The last book listed is among the most influential works on the conflict thesis, which takes its name from Draper's title. His book examined the relationship between religion and science, dismissing ideas of harmony and presenting the history of science as "not a mere record of isolated discoveries; it is a narrative of the conflict of two contending powers, the expansive force of the human intellect on the one side, and the compression arising from traditionary faith and human interests on the other." After outlining the origins of science in ancient Greek philosophy, Draper presented the development of Christianity as leading to repression of science. His argument, aimed at his fellow Protestants, employed anti-Catholic rhetoric, but also said that these "two rival divisions of the Christian church" were "in accord on one point: to tolerate no science except such as they considered agreeable to the Scriptures", and both were liable to "theological odium".
The beatification process opened under Pope John Paul II on 6 February 1987 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the edict declaring "nihil obstat" (no objections) and titled Ginard as a Servant of God. The diocesan process was held in Madrid with Cardinal Ángel Suquía Goicoechea inaugurating the investigation on 28 April 1987 and later closing on 23 March 1990; the C.C.S. later validated this process on 18 October 1991 and received the Positio dossier from the postulation in 1993 for additional assessment. Theologians assessed and approved the cause on 11 November 2003 as did the cardinal and bishop members of the C.C.S. on 17 February 2004. John Paul II granted the final approval needed for the cause on 19 April 2004 and confirmed that Ginard would soon be beatified after determining that she had died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) meaning no miracle was required for beatification.
The beatification process was to open in the Valencia archdiocese after the forum for the process was transferred there from the Barcelona archdiocese on 18 May 2001; the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the official "nihil obstat" decree (no objections to the cause) and titled Oller and her companions as Servants of God on 26 May 2001. The diocesan process of the investigation lasted from 24 November 2001 until 11 January 2003 at which stage all documents compiled during that period were submitted to the C.C.S. in Rome for further investigation; the C.C.S. declared that process valid in a decree issued on 28 March 2003. The postulation soon after compiled the Positio dossier which would recount their lives and attesting to their killing "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith). This was the prerequisite for their beatification: the acknowledgement that the trio were slain in hatred of their Christian faith.
But he made matters as easy as he could for his successors in the Monrad administration, and the ultimate catastrophe need not have been as serious as it was bad his advice, frankly given, been intelligently followed. After 1864 Hall bore more than his fair share of the odium and condemnation which weighed so heavily upon the national Liberal party, making no attempt to repudiate responsibility and refraining altogether from attacking patently unscrupulous opponents. But his personal popularity suffered not the slightest diminution, while his clear, almost intuitive, outlook and his unconquerable faith in the future of his country made him, during those difficult years, a factor of incalculable importance in the public life of Denmark. In 1870 he joined the Holstein-Holsteinborg ministry as minister of public worship, and in that capacity passed many useful educational reforms, but on the fall of the administration, in 1873, he retired altogether from public life.
In December 2018, Lee sued Leong Sze Hian, a prominent government critic, for sharing an online article on his Facebook page alleging that former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak had signed "secret deals" with Lee to secure help from Singapore banks to facilitate money laundering from Malaysia's government-run strategic development company 1Malaysia Development Berhad, in what became known as the 1MDB scandal. Lee's lawyers claimed that Lee had been "gravely injured in his character and reputation" and "brought into public scandal, odium and contempt". Leong removed the post thereafter but justified his actions by claiming that it was "a matter of public interest... whether or not it was correct" and filed a countersuit against Lee, claiming that the lawsuit proceedings against him were "an abuse of the process of the court". The Court of Appeal dismissed the countersuit in September 2019, citing that Singapore law does not recognize the concept of the abuse of court process.
The Gold Medal for Civil Merit he received in 2007 The beatification cause commenced under Pope John Paul II on 12 February 1996 after he was titled a Servant of God after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the official "nihil obstat" to the cause and allowed for it to commence on a diocesan level; Bishop Bassano Staffieri oversaw its opening on 30 March 1996 and its conclusion on 26 May 1998. The C.C.S. validated this process on 28 May 1999 in Rome. The postulation drafted and then submitted the Positio to the C.C.S. in 2003 and it allowed for a board of theologians to approve the cause on 16 October 2007 and for the C.C.S. to do so as well on 3 April 2012. Pope Benedict XVI - on 10 May 2012 - confirmed that Focherini had died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and thus approved his beatification.
The beatification process opened under Pope John Paul II on 7 January 1982 after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints issued the official "nihil obstat" to the cause and titled the three teenagers as Servants of God. A cognitional process was held in the Diocese of Tlaxcala that Bishop Luis Munive Escobar oversaw; the C.C.S. later validated this process on 8 November 1985 and historians approved the cause on 8 November 1985 after deeming no historical obstacles existed to impede the cause. The postulation sent the Positio dossier to the C.C.S. in 1989 which allowed for theologians to approve its contents on 24 November 1989 and the C.C.S. to do so as well on 6 February 1990. Pope John Paul II – on 3 March 1990 – confirmed that the three teenagers were killed "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith) and beatified them on 6 May 1990 on his apostolic visit to Mexico in the capital of Mexico City.
An ignoble war has been declared on a weak country ... Soon I shall be overwhelmed by pressure brought upon me ... to take extreme measures which will lead to war. To try and avoid such a calamity as a European war, I beg you in the name of our old friendship to do what you can to stop your allies from going too far." Shortly after declaring war on Serbia, Conrad informed the Germans that Austria-Hungary could not start operations until 12 August, to much fury in Berlin. Bavarian diplomat Count Lerchenfeld reported to Munich: "The Imperial government is thus put into the extraordinary difficult position of being exposed during the intervening period to the other Powers’ proposals for mediation and conferences, and if it continues to maintain its previous reserve towards such proposals, the odium of having provoked a world war will in the end recoil on it, even in the eyes of the German people.
The process of beatification was held in Würzburg and was conducted in a usual form since it was conducted in two forms: the case in which miracles would be required and another in which a recognition of "in odium fidei" would be required. The "nihil obstat" (nothing against) for the cause was granted on 5 September 1988 which allowed for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to confer upon Unzeitig the title Servant of God. The process for heroic virtue was conducted from 26 July 1991 until June 1996; the process was declared valid on 11 January 2002. The Positio on his life and virtue was submitted to Rome for further investigation in 2005 and allowed for Pope Benedict XVI to proclaim him to be Venerable on 3 July 2009. The next step would have meant the recognition of a miracle for beatification and indeed a process for one such healing was initiated and validated on 2 June 2007; a medical board based in Rome even approved it on 25 March 2010.
From the writ it appears that the ordinary justices itinerant for that county were behind with their business, and it would seem that Mortimer and Beaufo were appointed "justices of assize" for that occasion only. In the same year and that following he travelled the large western circuit of that day, which stretched from Cornwall to Southampton in one direction, and Staffordshire and Shropshire in another, as one of the first commission of trailbaston issued for those counties. The popular odium which he excited, and of which the memory is preserved by a line, "Spigurnel e Belflour sunt gens de cruelté", in a ballad of the time celebrating the doings of the commission, proves him to have displayed exceptional vigour in the performance of his duty. In a writ of uncertain date he is joined with William de Bereford and two other judges in a commission to inquire into the obstruction of the Thames between London and Oxford by weirs, locks, and mills, which was considered so serious a grievance by the merchants who were in the habit of travelling or sending goods by water between the two towns, that they had petitioned the king for its redress.
Statue in Rennes. The beatification process commenced in Rennes in a diocesan process from 1 March 1968 until 19 March 1969 in order to evaluate his life as well as the work he was involved with and the manner in which Callo died "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith). This took place despite the fact that the formal introduction of the cause came under Pope John Paul II on 7 January 1982 in an act that confirmed upon Callo the posthumous title Servant of God. A second process however was dispensed and allowed for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to accept the process and decree it was valid on 9 January 1987 and commence the so-called "Roman Phase" in which Rome would begin its own line of investigation. The Positio was submitted to Rome for investigation in 1987 and after both theologians and the Congregation approved the case it was taken to the pope who confirmed on 1 June 1987 that Callo had indeed died because of others’ hatred for his Christian faith; this meant that he could be beatified without a required miracle.
George Washington, in his 1796 Farewell Address, described having allegiance to more than one nation as negative: > So likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a > variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the > illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common > interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays > the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter > without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions > to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to > injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what > ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a > disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are > withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who > devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice > the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with > popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, > a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public > good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or > infatuation.
