The pilots drop their payload – which includes two atomic weapons and a mysterious box called simply "Container Q" – over land, because they are under orders not to drop at sea. The hapless pilots parachute out and land safely on the island, but with no equipment or means to contact their headquarters, and they are left wearing only their underwear. Lacking resources – money to buy clothes, food, or even to pay for a long-distance call to base – the pilot and navigator of the lost bomber scour the island like vagabonds. Unknown to the pilots, the Americans have already deployed their own operation: a team of agents disguised as resort developers.

Developed during the 1960s, blue boxes allowed private individuals to control long-distance call routing and to bypass the toll-collection mechanisms of telephone companies, enabling the user to place free long-distance telephone calls on national and international circuits. At first, the use of these techniques was limited to a small group of "phreakers", which included, among others, Steve Wozniak.

His abandoned car was found the following day in Davenport, Iowa, roughly 160 miles east of Des Moines. A warrant was then issued in Des Moines for his arrest on a charge of abduction. Company general manager Ardyth Williams said the move to the automatic number identification system was necessary to keep up with the areas around the North Norwich system. It also resulted in some pay back for the independent company because it received money from Bell Canada for each long-distance call completed in this manner. Commissioners from the North Norwich Municipal Telephone system presented a $900,000 expansion plan to Norwich Township council. Mr. Buckrell said the company was at a "financial cross roads" and "something had to be done", although he said the company was "in good financial shape" the plans for expansion would require modernizing the equipment to make the service more efficient.

It used to be that a call to a different area code was a long-distance call, with rare exceptions where a city falls on an area code boundary, but the significant growth in the number of area codes, and the shrinking of the numbering plan areas since that time have invalidated this assumption. In Canada and some regions of the United States, placing a landline call with "1" before an area code where the outgoing call is in the same service area results in an automated recording indicating that the call being made is local. The toll prefix is not necessary, even if the area codes are different. This is common in areas where overlays are being used.

In the local-battery system of the early cranked magneto phones, the phone's own battery powered its transmitter as well as the receiver of the called phone. If too many phones were off-hook and listening, the additional receivers would load down the transmitter's battery with a voltage so low that no phone could receive an intelligible signal. With party- line service, particularly if there were more than two subscribers on the line, it was often necessary to complete a long-distance call through the operator to identify and correctly bill the calling party. In some cases, the calling party would misidentify themselves in an attempt to send the bill to another party.

To address this problem and allow end-to-end user long-distance dialing, Bell introduced a second system that encoded digits as two tones, the multi- frequency signaling system, or "MF". Before the widespread use of end-user phones with touchpad dialing, the tone dialer was located in the tandem. When the user placed a long-distance call, the initial "1" connected the customer's line to the tandem, which then read the following digits, notably the area code, to find the target exchange. Once it had the target it scanned the trunk lines to that exchange looking for a free line, connected to it, and then relayed the rest of the phone number over the line using the tone dialing method.

This dramatization (and others like it) illustrates the cumbersome, costly and time-consuming process needed for long-distance calling before direct distance dialing was available. 1974, large American cities (Los Angeles and New York City) began introducing office codes of this format, to keep up with demand while postponing area code splits by a few more years. In step-by-step offices, implementation usually required dialing an extra prefix to signal the dialing of a long-distance call with area code; 112 and 115 were early choices, but 1 became eventually common. In geographically small numbering plan areas that already were a single local calling area, it did not cause confusion in long-distance dialing, but in some cases, it became necessary to implement ten-digit dialing of long-distance calls within the same area code. This necessity was more common as interchangeable central office codes were introduced in more area codes.

A long-distance call is a "trunk call" in British English, but is a "toll call" in American English, though neither term is well known among younger Americans. The distinction is a result of historical differences in the way local service was billed; the Bell System traditionally flat-rated local calls in all but a few markets, subsidising local service by charging higher rates, or tolls, for intercity calls, allowing local calls to appear to be free. British Telecom (and the British Post Office before it) charged for all calls, local and long distance, so labelling one class of call as "toll" would have been meaningless. Similarly, a toll-free number in America is a freephone number in the UK. The term "freefone" is a BT trademark.

Within the multinational calling area administered by the North American Numbering Plan, telephone numbers are composed of three fixed-length fields: a three-digit numbering plan area (NPA) code (area code), a three-digit (NXX) central office code, and a four-digit (XXXX) station number. In seven-digit dialing, only the central office code and the station number is dialed, indicating that the call destination is within the local area code. This was the standard in most of North America from the 1950s onward. In some small villages with only one local exchange, it may have been permissible to dial only the four-digit station number. A long- distance call within the same area code could often be dialed as 1+7D, without using an area code.

Callers from outside the local-calling region of the assigned number, however, pay for a long- distance call, although domestic long-distance rates are generally lower than the rates in caller-pays systems. Conversely, an advantage of caller-pays is the relative absence of telemarketing and nuisance calls to mobile numbers. The integrated numbering plan also enables local number portability between fixed and wireless services within a region, allowing users to switch to mobile service while keeping their telephone number. The initial plan for area code overlays did allow for providing separate area codes for use by mobile devices, although these were still assigned to a specific geographical area, and were charged at the same rate as other area codes.

Until the early 1980s a called party could instantly recognize an incoming long-distance call by its hiss or low level, due to the inherent signal loss and introduction of noise. The deployment of digital technologies such as pulse-code modulation and T-carrier circuits in the 1970s and 1980s let long-distance calls match the high voice quality of local calls. Improvements in switching technology, the deployment of high-capacity optical fibre and an increase in competition substantially lowered long-distance rates at the end of the 20th century. Using the Internet, the distinction between local and long-distance communication is fading to the point where an Internet call from the United States to Beijing carries a lower wholesale cost than a domestic landline call to a rural independent in small-town Iowa.

Strikingly, the characters in Ada seem to acknowledge their own world as the copy or negative version, calling it "Anti-Terra", while its mythical twin is the real "Terra". Tellme was also featured in the 2001 documentary Wild at Start.. and was referenced in a 2000 Malcolm Gladwell article in The New Yorker about recruiting.. If called on Christmas Eve, Santa will say what state he is traveling over, and exactly what he is doing. In 2009 they added a service that allows you to receive messages from Santa a week early which explain what he is doing to prepare for Christmas. At the onset of service, as a way to gain more users, they offered a free long-distance call feature called Phone Booth.

On August 10, 1976, Bell Canada and the Bell System helped celebrate the centennial of the first long-distance call with a commemorative service broadcast live from the Homestead to Vancouver, British Columbia, via a Telesat communications satellite. A large satellite dish was set up on the lawn in front of Melville House for the purpose. The event being celebrated was Alexander Graham Bell's "three great tests of the telephone", which culminated with the call he received on August 10, 1876, in Paris, from his father and others speaking to him from the Dominion Telegraph Office in Brantford. For that long-distance test the younger Bell set up a telephone using telegraph lines at Robert White's Boot and Shoe Store running through the Dominion Telegraph office in Paris.

Call-through telecom companies are alternative telecommunications companies in Europe that provide services to make inexpensive international phone calls. All a user needs to do to take advantage of these savings is to dial the call- through access number followed by the destination number. Different phone companies specializes in a different types of international phone call deals, which means that the cheap long-distance call plan that works for one country won't necessarily work for another. Most call-through telecom companies charge different telephone call prices at different times of day for local and national calls while others offer really cheap international phone calls (from as little as 0.5p or 1p per minute in the UK, as a local call rate for the international phone call in Ireland and France, 2c a minute, even free, in Austria and Germany etc.).

A nationwide launch developed by ad agency J. Walter Thompson and sister company JWT Direct (New York) followed on September 6, 1990. Thanks to an aggressive media marketing campaign, bundling with various consumer-oriented computers such as IBM's PS/1 and PS/2, as well as various clones and Hayes modems, the Prodigy service soon had more than a million subscribers. To handle the traffic, Prodigy built a national network of POP (points of presence) sites that made local access numbers available for most homes in the US. This was a major factor in the expansion of the service since subscribers did not have to dial long-distance to access the service. The subscriber only paid for the local call (usually free), while Prodigy paid for the long-distance call to its national data center in Yorktown, New York.

The program has been implemented in much of the United States by state regulators. Lieutenant Ring comes up with the idea of using a telephone to make a long-distance call to Camp Lejeune to call in air support. After driving off the enemy, despite Powers' explicit orders to the contrary, Ring, Highway, and the Recon Platoon take out a key enemy position and capture the Cuban soldiers manning it. When Major Powers learns this, he bawls Ring and Highway out and threatens Highway with a court-martial, but the regiment's commanding officer in charge of Power's battalion, Colonel Meyers (a combat veteran who had served in the same battalion as Highway in the Vietnam War), arrives on the scene by helicopter and after listening to Power's and Highway's reports to him, commends Highway instead of Powers and reprimands the major and tells him he's being transferred back to his former support unit for discouraging the Recon Marines aggressive fighting spirit. When Highway and his men return to the U.S., they receive a warm reception.
