At 11:31 CEST (09:31 UTC), a WestfalenBahn passenger train travelling from Osnabrück was in collision with a tractor and trailer that were obstructing a level crossing at Ibbenbüren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. For decades, even until 1980's, someone made crosses in the ballast sand between sleepers on the site of the accident.

On Saturday 22 March 1997, an evening northbound unit approaching Trentham passed the up home (29) signal at danger, which caused the alarms on the Sutherland Avenue level crossing immediately after the signal to only activate at the last second. The train hit a car on the level crossing, severely damaging the car but only causing minor injuries. The St. Georges Bridge is a steel tied arch bridge that carries U.S. Route 13 (US 13) across the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in St. Georges, Delaware. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and opened in 1942 as a high-level crossing, the bridge was the first four-lane, high-level crossing to span the canal. It replaced a previous vertical lift bridge which was damaged when a German merchant ship collided with it.

The Ufton Nervet crash took place in the parish on 6 November 2004. Seven people were killed and 70 injured when the 17:35 1C92 from London to which passes through was partially derailed by colliding with a stationary car on the level crossing, before subsequently passing over a set of points for the Down Goods Loop at Towney, causing a major derailment. The level crossing, called Ufton (but more commonly known as Ufton Nervet) was of the Automatic Half-Barrier type, positioned on Ufton Lane approximately 300 yards (300 metres) from the junction with the A4. Barnes Halt railway station served a location midway between Creeslough and Kilmacrenan in County Donegal, Ireland. Barnes Halt was not a 'station' in the ordinary sense. It was simply a stopping point at the level crossing across the Kilmacrennan-Creeslough road, a few miles north of Termon. There was no station building or platforms, only the embankment on which the rail track ran, and the house occupied by the railway employee responsible for manning the level crossing gates.

Views here run back to the lower level and across to Southampton Water and the chapel. The line then re enters the trees, across the last level crossing, down a short straight which brings us to Piccadilly and the end of our journey.

In the mid-1930s, the Bayswater Road Board asked the Main Roads Department to construct a subway at Guildford Road to replace the existing level crossing. At 7:20 pm on 21 October 1991, a Dundee bound Aberdeen-London Intercity express destroyed two out of the four gates of the level crossing. The fifty passengers on board and five people in a passing car were fortunate to avoid collision when the train passed through the crossing at around 80 miles per hour. The gates had not been closed before the train passed the level crossing. Dundee District Council (now defunct) had previously postponed planning permission to modernise the gates.

Prior to the building of the present Cleethorpes Road bridge, a complex railway junction and level crossing was situated on the Cleethorpes side of Grimsby Docks station. The loss of the fresh fish traffic from rail to road eventually resulted in the removal of the junction. The level crossing, being on a major route between Grimsby town and Cleethorpes, was the cause for many delays on Cleethorpe Road. The Faure level crossing accident was a truck-train collision near Cape Town, South Africa that caused nineteen deaths. It occurred at approximately 8 a.m. on 13 November 2006 when a Metrorail train collided with a truck that had stalled on an uncontrolled level crossing at Faure near Somerset West. The truck was carrying at least thirty-three workers from a local vineyard and there were nineteen fatalities (eleven men and eight women) and six other injured people among the occupants of the vehicle.

At the same time the construction of 100 new car parking spaces was cancelled, and railway sources confirmed that the government's plans were to close Aircraft station. However, in September 2010 the public transport minister ended speculation by pledging that the station would not be closed. In March 2018, it was announced that the Aviation Road level crossing will be grade separated via the road over rail method with the entrance of the station to be reconstructed. The level crossing was eventually removed in September 2019.
Hoppers Crossing is a railway station on the Werribee line in Victoria, Australia. A "policeman" (i.e. a railway employee stationed to control a level crossing and regulate trains) was on duty at Berryknowes Road level crossing, and he had exhibited a green hand signal, meaning "caution", to the driver of the Greenock train. The driver shut off steam but evidently continued coasting, and following the Dumfries train closely, he saw the platelayer's warning too late, and collided with the Dumfries train. The two trains were scheduled to leave Paisley at a two-minute interval, and the Dumfries train was slower.
The end of operations on the Gracefield Branch, just before the Parkside Road level crossing. A road- style Stop sign has been used in place of the standard All Trains Stop board. This part of the branch line, just shy of the Elizabeth Street level crossing, was used as a stopping place for the Hutt Workshops workers' trains. From the time the line opened to the 1940s, steam trains were used to convey patrons to race meetings and picnics at the Hutt Park Raceway via Woburn.
On 17 November 2018 Great Eastern Railway Class Y14 0-6-0 locomotive 564 was in collision with a car on the level crossing accessing Sheringham golf course, while travelling at about 10mph. The car was badly damaged, but nobody was hurt and the train and rail infrastructure was not damaged. This automatic open level crossing, controlled by lights which were working properly at the time, is the only one in regular use on the railway. The car driver was later fined for his involvement.
The main signal box (Befehlsstellwerk), designated by the letters Gw, was located at the western end of the station next to the level crossing; and a subsidiary or "pointsmen's" signal box (Wärterstellwerk), designated as Go, at the eastern end. The signal box closed on 23 May 2009 as part of the Coventry - Nuneaton line resignalling project, whereby the control of the level crossing and signalling passed to the West Midlands Signalling Centre, Birmingham. The signal box was finally demolished in the early hours of Sunday 26 January 2014, almost 5 years after signalling its last train.
The main yard was to the south of the level crossing, equipped with a goods shed, coal wharf, cattle pen and end-loading dock, A smaller set of private sidings to the north of the level crossing served a granary. Only the down platform remains in railway use, with its waiting room having been demolished. The brick-built goods shed survives, now isolated from the railway, being used by a company restoring steam locomotives and traction engines. The up line waiting room is used by an upholsterer.

The main station building for trains to St Helens was on the east side of the twin tracks (furthest from the village centre). A lightly constructed wooden building on the opposite side of the tracks sufficed for passengers towards Rainford Junction and Ormskirk, next to which was the signalbox which controlled the level crossing gates.
The station had a single platform on the eastern side of the line. A level crossing stood to the north, just beyond the passing loop, with a gate box for the operator and a footbridge to the station for use when the level crossing was closed to road traffic. The signal box stood on the western side about half way along the passing loop. In 1921 the loop became a siding with part of the western lifted and the approach made from the south.
At Whiteabbey, the line enters a cutting and climbs towards Bleach Green Junction. The station is long gone here too (1977), but the lines diverge here, with the Londonderry line continuing to Mossley West and Antrim. The next stops – Jordanstown (University of Ulster, level crossing), Greenisland (former junction) and Trooperslane (level crossing) – are still a few hundred yards inland, and Belfast Lough can be seen from time to time where development is sparse. After Trooperslane, the line passes through a former halt at Mount.
The station opened on 1 February 1851 by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway. It was situated on both sides of the level crossing on an unnamed southwest of the hamlet of Newham. Two sidings were to the south of the level crossing facing the down platform; one was elevated above the coal loading bank. Newham was one of the seven stations to be closed due to the Second World War and it reopened on 7 October 1946 but the Sunday services were stopped.

The Ufton Nervet rail crash was a collision between a train and car on a level crossing near Ufton Nervet, Berkshire, England, in 2004. Seven people, including the drivers of the train and the car, were killed.

In November 1959, the line from Reservoir was duplicated, in conjunction with the extension of suburban services to Lalor. However, the duplicated line converged at the Up end of the Keon Parade level crossing,Flickr - High Bicyclist Photostream and it wasn't until 1988, that the current Platform 2 was provided.Flickr - High Bicyclist Photostream The crossover, located at the Up end of the station, past the level crossing, was also provided around this time. It remained the northern extremity for the double line until November 2011, when the line from Keon Park to Epping was duplicated.
Later the steam era trains operated hourly from Flinders Street to Braybrook Junction, with only eight trains continuing to St Albans. The station was made the terminus of the electrified network from the city in October 1921, and services were improved, with trains running every 40 minutes by day and hourly at night. The original station was located at the northern end of the Main Road level crossing, with all terminating electric trains using Platform 2. In 1959 the station was rebuilt, with an island platform built on the southern side of the level crossing.
The former briquette depot at Glenhuntly was demolished in March/April 1975. In the mid 1980s, as part of works to add a third track on the Frankston line, the western platform was converted to an island platform. During this time, the original station building, built in the 1880s, was demolished, and was replaced with the present brick structure, which opened on 1 July 1987. It was also during this time that boom barriers were provided at the Glen Huntly Road level crossing, and the nearby Nerrim Road level crossing, in 1986.
The name of the area, and of the station, arises from the fact that the family of Stephen Hopper (1832-1908) were early residents of the area. He was a railway ganger, and his wife, Elizabeth, was employed to operate the gates at the level crossing adjacent to where the station is now located. This crossing is set to be removed by 2022 as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project. The Western standard gauge line, which runs between Melbourne and Adelaide, passes to the north of Platform 1.
It was saved by the Strathspey Railway Company during the 1970s and gradually the facilities have been upgraded by volunteers. Spey Lodge now fulfils its original role again, providing hostel accommodation for engine crews and other volunteers working on the railway. After Spey Lodge, the railway passes the site of the new Aviemore Hospital then crosses Dalfaber level crossing, an Automatic Open Crossing, Locally Monitored (AOCL). This level crossing was not originally part of the railway, but was installed after the development of the Dalfaber Estate in the 1980s.
The walk starts at Beverley Minster and heads north through the town and crosses the A164, Hessle to Driffield road, and the A1035 before entering open countryside. It heads towards Molescroft Carr Farm before it heads north over Black Hill to Leconfield Low Parks and the edge of Leconfield Airfield. The walk follows the Hull to Scarborough railway line and the Catchwater Drain on the left towards New Arram. The walk continues north and crosses a level crossing and follows the railway to the next level crossing where it crosses back again.
The station was opened in 1852 by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) on its main line from King's Cross to Doncaster. The GNR became part of the LNER in 1923, then British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. The station had two platforms and a signal box,Tuxford North on Picture the Past website originally simply named "Tuxford", which controlled the Lincoln Road level crossing immediately north of the station. The road is now the A6075 and the level crossing has been replaced by a bridge which crosses the busy tracks slightly to the south.
On Thursday, 14 November 1996, one of the two Southerner trains was involved in a level-crossing crash at Hilderthorpe, North Otago, killing four people. The train was involved in another crash in July 2000, colliding with a ute at Edendale, north of Invercargill. On Monday, 8 January 2001, the southbound Southerner was again involved in a level crossing crash, this time with a cattle truck. The DC-class locomotive and two of three passenger carriages were derailed, injuring 21 passengers and forcing the destruction of 10 cattle-beasts.
The historic stone 1857 building on the down (west) platform, which also included a signal box, was demolished when the standard gauge line opened. The station retained a manned ticket and information office until (circa 2005?) at which time it was closed. In October 2002, the level crossing on Park Terrace, immediately south of the station platforms was the scene of a fatal collision between The Ghan, several cars and a bus. Since then, buses to and from the Interchange have been re- routed away from the level crossing and locking pedestrian gates installed.
With the electrification of the Werribee line in 1983, many of the Williamstown Pier services became shuttle services from Newport instead of through services from Flinders Street. The level crossing at Ferguson Street, adjacent to North Williamstown Station, is currently earmarked for removal by the Level Crossing Removal Authority. The crossing is expected to be fully removed by 2022. There is a community proposal to replace the Williamstown Branch Railway line with a "Micro Public Transport Tunnel Loop System" which would obviate the need to replace the Ferguson St crossing.
The site of the original Dunstable station became the goods yard. This yard saw large quantities of coal and fertiliser traffic, in addition to general traffic. To the south of the yard lay the town's gasworks which were served by sidings, whilst to the west was a signal box which controlled access to the yard as well as the level crossing over Brewer's Hill Road. A rail-served Bedfordshire County Council depot was situated on the other side of the level crossing immediately to the north of the running lines.
On 28 September 1991, a Light Railway Order was granted authorising the reinstatement of the East Lincolnshire Railway between and the former Keddington Road level crossing near Louth, which would include the line through North Thoresby. Tracklaying by the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway reached North Thoresby in 2008 and the first train for 47 years between the two stations ran on 26 August 2009. The south (up) platform has been restored and a waiting shelter erected. The level crossing to the north has been tarmaced over, but the north crossing gate has survived.
There had been a continuing series of crashes at the level crossing prior to the fatal crash, resulting in the local road and rail authorities installing perceptual countermeasures such as warning signs and enhanced road markings in attempts to provide more information to drivers of the crossing location and characteristics and to influence vehicle approach speeds. A tragic occurrence, the Gerogery level crossing accident served as a focal point for the commencement of reforms to the design, operation and management of railway level crossings across Australia. This reform process is continuing.
On 20 June 1959, there was a serious accident at Lauffen when a public service bus operated by the Deutsche Bundesbahn crashed into an express train on the Tübingen-Würzburg (via Stuttgart) route. At the time, this accident was the worst since the Second World War, killing 45 and seriously injuring a further 27. The cause of the accident was attributed to human error on the part of the level-crossing keeper; the level-crossing has since been replaced by an underpass. A commemorative plaque was erected in memory of those who lost their lives.
It meets the Outer Harbor railway line in Alberton, and ceases a short distance later, a couple of hundred metres south of Grand Junction Road (A16). The short section between Park Terrace and Churchill Road at the southeastern end of Torrens Road is designated route A22, which then follows Churchill Road. The level crossing of the Gawler and Port Augusta railways is proposed to be replaced by a bridge. It carries an average of 23,000 vehicles a day, and the level crossing gates can be down for 22% of the time during peak hours.
Paignton North Signal Box Two signal boxes were opened in 1889, the 13-lever North Signal Box beside the Torquay Road level crossing, the 17-lever South Signal Box by the Sands Road level crossing. Both were replaced in 1924 by two new boxes. The North box closed on 26 March 1988 when control of trains was transferred to the Panel Signal Box at Exeter but the South box was retained to monitor the two level crossings. In 1990 this function was transferred to a panel in the station buildings and the signal box closed.
The station was opened on 1 July 1847 by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway; it was situated north of the level crossing on the B6347 at Springfield View. There were two sidings behind the north end of the down platform (these served the coal depot) and there was a goods warehouse adjacent to the up passenger platform and north of the level crossing. The station was one of the stations that closed for the Second World War. It was reopened by the London and North Eastern Railway on 7 October 1946.
Fawdon is a station on the Tyne and Wear Metro, serving Coxlodge, Fawdon and Kenton in Newcastle upon Tyne. The station joined the network in May 1981, following the opening of the line between South Gosforth and Bank Foot. Fawdon has two platforms, which are located on opposite sides of the level crossing on Fawdon Lane. The platform to the east of the level crossing is located on the site of the former Coxlodge station, which opened in June 1905, as part of the Ponteland and Darras Hall branch of the Blyth and Tyne Railway.
The Gainsborough Line is in length and links on the Great Eastern Main Line in Essex to in Suffolk. The gated level crossing is on a private road leading to sewage works owned by Anglian Water, near the village of Little Cornard between Sudbury and . On 23 March 1925 eight people were killed when a car was run into by an electric parcels van at a gated level crossing at Wickham Road, Highett. The gatekeeper was acquitted of manslaughter at a subsequent trial.

Tharwa Bridge is a four span Allan truss bridge that provides a high-level crossing point across the Murrumbidgee River, allowing traffic between Canberra and Tharwa village. It is the oldest surviving bridge in the Australian Capital Territory.

The wooden level crossing gates at Shippea Hill used to be operated manually by the signalman in the local signal box. In 2012, the signal box was closed and the crossing was renewed with automatic barriers and warning lights.
However, all intercity trains operated by Great Western Railway and CrossCountry pause at this station when travelling in the up direction towards Par so that the level crossing can be activated. However, such stops are not available to passengers.

This line would avoid Southern Cross and Flinders Street, instead travelling via North Melbourne, Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, Parliament and Richmond through a modified tunnel. In the shorter term, a level crossing removal has commenced for the Glenroy Road level crossing. It is scheduled to be completed by 2022.
A proposed level crossing at the Pacific Electric tracks (today's Venice Boulevard) would result in "the worse death trap in Los Angeles," a traffic engineer warned in 1915, because of the impaired view of the railway from West Boulevard on both sides. A petition to the city by Lafayette Square residents in September 1915 urged construction of a level crossing to bring West Boulevard across the Pacific Electric tracks.
Callerton Parkway is situated close to the site of the former Callerton station, which was located to the north west of the level crossing on Callerton Lane. During the closing decades of the twentieth century growing numbers of stopping trains at the station and a sustained rise in the level of motorised traffic led to increasing delays both for cyclists and for motorists at the level crossing directly adjacent to the station on its western side. The matter was finally addressed early in the twenty-first century with the construction of a short section of a road tunnel under the railway lines: this replaced the old level crossing. Traffic was officially suspended and a Stop Block placed across the tracks on the Sydney side of Access Rd level crossing in October 2016. Hoppers Crossing is served by the Hoppers Crossing railway station, located to the south of the suburb, on the Werribee line. When opened in 1970, it was a small station on the western side of the Old Geelong Road level crossing on the Geelong line, served by only a few diesel-hauled trains each day. In 1983, the station was relocated to the eastern side of the level crossing, in conjunction with electrification of the line to Werribee. It was not until the mid-1990s that Hoppers Crossing started to receive train services comparable with the rest of suburban Melbourne.
To the west of the station was Fletton level crossing on the main road from the south into and out of Peterborough. From the moment the railway arrived, this level crossing proved to be a notorious bottleneck. In 1848, 70 trains per day were involved in shunting operations over the crossing and by 1855 complaints were made that this resulted in the regular closure of the gates for 25 minutes at a time. With the development of the brick industry in the area and the southward spread of the city into Woodston and Fletton the inconvenience increased.
These have nearly all been replaced due to reliability issues, most notable at Redcar. Barriers are the normal level crossing protector to be seen in the UK and now come in various models. All barriers at crossings are illuminated with barrier lights on the barrier arm, and are highlighted in red and white reflective stickers. Half barriers at level crossing are a simple boom arm that descends on the left hand foot way and left hand lane(s) of a road when the crossing activates and the warning lights have been on for about 10 seconds.

Knox City Council have endeavoured to protect this green backdrop to Melbourne by developing pro-environment planning guidelines. For years, Boronia had been split in two by the Belgrave railway line and a bottleneck railway crossing across the two main thoroughfares—Boronia and Dorset Roads. This crossing was the scene of a level crossing accident on 1 June 1952 that took 13 lives and was regarded at the time as one of the worst level crossing tragedies in Victoria's history.
The line from to Broxbourne was opened by the Northern & Eastern Railway on 15 September 1840. Initially a temporary station was opened on Cadmore Lane to the north of the current station but that only lasted for a couple of months between April and 1 June 1842. The existing station was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway who had leased the N&ER; from 1 January 1844,on 31 May 1846 and was located near the level crossing on Windmill Lane. The two platformed station was of timber construction with a two-storey station building and platforms either side of the level crossing.
The Gerogery level crossing accident was a vehicle-train crash that occurred at Bells Road on the Olympic Highway, where it crossed the Main Southern railway in Gerogery, New South Wales, Australia. The crash occurred on 27 January 2001 at 16:07 and resulted in five fatalities in a car that was struck by a Melbourne-bound XPT service travelling at 160 kmh. Although the train derailed in the impact, there were no deaths to the train passengers or crew. The crash site extended for more than 1 km south of the level crossing, with vehicle, train and rail track debris found throughout.
In 1858 the station was extended with extra offices, improved facilities and a porte- cochère for carriages, designed by John Holloway Saunders, the Midland Railway architect. An island platform, the present 2 and 3, was added which was accessed via a level crossing from platform 1. From the Illustrated London News 30 May 1891 In 1881 platforms 4 to 6 (Platform 5 being a bay to the south) were added, being long and wide. The level crossing which gave access from platform 1 to platform 2 was removed and access provided by a new footbridge wide with staircases down to each platform.
Old entrance building of Holzheim (bei Neuss) station Holzheim (bei Neuss) station is located in the southwest of Neuss Holzheim, which has been part of the city Neuss since 1975. Here, too, the historic station building is still preserved, but it has long not been used for its original purpose. Until a few years ago, the Holzheimer station was staffed by a gatekeeper, who controlled the level crossing barriers at the station and the nearby level crossing, which was opened on request by telephone. As part of the track rehabilitation in 2006, the level crossings were automated and the gatekeeper was removed.
The goods shed was rebuilt quite early on to accommodate the heavy traffic handled. The passenger station was rebuilt in 1897 when the roof was removed, new buildings provided, a new engine shed built nearer the tunnel, and the level crossing removed to the east end. It was at this time that a third footbridge was added across the station in place of the level crossing, access to this being from the road rather than the platforms. From 2 January 1905 the station was also used as the terminus of the branch to and , although the actual junction was at station.
InterCity 125 passes over the level crossing as it leaves for London Approaching Truro from the east the line soars above the city on Kenwyn viaduct. It then passes near the site of an ancient castle (where cattle were once unloaded from trains for market), and then across Carvedras viaduct and a level crossing to reach the station. At the far end the line curves left into a short cutting before diving through Highertown tunnel. The main entrance to the brick-builtstation is on the south side of the line, leading directly to the platform used by trains to Penzance.
Tawa College students who commute from other stations must also walk the extra distance. The resulting extra pedestrian traffic including the extra use of the Collins Avenue level crossing by students has increased the risk of another serious accident at this high-risk level crossing. Initially, electric passenger services stopping at Linden were trains hauled by ED and EW class electric locomotives, and DM/D and EM/ET class electric multiple units. ED locomotives hauled passenger trains from their introduction in 1940 but were rarely seen on passenger trains after the introduction of the EW class locomotives in 1952.

On 6 November 2004 at 18:12 GMT, the 17:35 service from to , an InterCity 125 (HST) led by a Class 43 power car (43019) collided with a stationary car at an automatic level crossing close to the rural West Berkshire village of Ufton Nervet. The inquest concluded that the crash was caused by Brian Drysdale, a chef at Wokefield Park Hotel away, committing suicide by parking his car on the crossing.
Running from the sidings on the up side (south) of the line at the eastern end of Goodmayes station, the line ran parallel eastwards almost to Chadwell passenger station and then crossing the area now occupied by the station car park and turning south to cross Chitty's Lane (now Station Road) on a skew, and heading almost due south; its alignment is the present day Valence Avenue: the railway came first, and the new road was formed as an early dual carriageway, straddling the railway line, which was in a central reservation. It crossed Green Lane, and a gated level crossing was formed here; further south, when Becontree Avenue was later built, a level crossing was provided here too. The line continued as far as Wood Lane, where there was another level crossing. The main line then turned south-east along what became Parsloes Avenue, turning south at about the intersection with the present Raydons Road.
A footpath also comes from the nearby nature preserve at Nursery Road playing fields and another level crossing from a footpath from Dorset Road (B285). Trams call at the stop every 5 minutes with trams scheduled to arrive at both platforms simultaneously.
Today (2016) there is a small convenience store is located on platform 2. Disabled access between platforms is possible using the Stowupland Road level crossing. Most of the former railway land (goods sidings) is now given over for car parking for the station.
The station opened on 1 July 1867 by the North British Railway. The signal box, which opened in 1894, was to the west next to the level crossing. The station closed to passengers on 1 October 1951. The signal box closed in 1956.
It left the Ely to Peterborough line at Three Horseshoes Junction in Turves, Cambridgeshire, just east of the level crossing on Burnthouse Road.British Railways Pre- Grouping Atlas and Gazetteer Passenger services were never provided, and the line closed to goods in 1966.

There were two accidents in the station. In one case, a train hit one of the level crossing gates, and it had to be replaced. The other accident was more serious. A workman was killed during an accident while shunting coal waggons.
John Symons was for a very long period based at the Thirroul depot. He worked his way up to become an engine driver. In 1937 he had an unfortunate experience at a level crossing when the train hit a pedestrian on the track.

Mountfield Halt (TQ 746 197 ) was situated on the Hastings Line between Robertsbridge and Battle. It opened in 1923 and was closed on 6 October 1969. Both platforms were built of sleepers. The station stood just east of Battle Road (A2100) level crossing.
Reigate Signal Box The station also incorporates a signal box, built in 1929 to replace an earlier box at the other end of the station. This remains in use to operate the Level crossing gates and other signals along the North Downs Line.
In Lockington, England on 26 July 1986, the 09:33 passenger train from to Kingston upon Hull on the Hull to Scarborough Line struck a passenger van on a level crossing. Eight passengers on the train and a passenger in the van died.
On 20 March 1960, a railmotor from Maffra, heading to Traralgon station to connect with The Gippslander train to Melbourne, collided with a school bus at the Liddiard Road level crossing. The bus driver and five children died, and twenty-three were injured.
The woods may be viewed from the roadside, as may the hills of the Dean. There is a level crossing in Lydney. Until Chepstow, there is a height limit under the low railway bridges. Tall vehicles are directed to Newport on the A40.
Oxhill used to be the site of a major level crossing, allowing access from the former nearby Stanhope and Tyne Railway line to a shunting yard adjacent to nearby South Moor, where coal was loaded for transport to the River Tyne for export.

The Nagpur level crossing disaster was an accident that occurred on 3 February 2005, when a crowded trailer being towed by a tractor was hit by a train near the village of Kanan, 20 km from Nagpur in Maharashtra, India, causing 58 fatalities.

The 2013 Ottawa bus–train crash took place on September 18, 2013, between an OC Transpo bus and a Via train, at a level crossing located north of Fallowfield station. Six bus passengers died and several people were injured as a result.
