The G7 nations, at their meeting in Washington over the weekend pledged to "support systemically important financial institutions and prevent their failure". This decision is based on analysis of the consequences of the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers which resulted in the loss of funds by other financial institutions. It is thought that those losses may have triggered a tightening of the credit crunch as banks ceased to lend to one another. No enforceable mechanism was created to support the pledge, but it is believed to extend to major firms such as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. On October 13 stock markets worldwide rose with the Dow Jones industrial average showing a 400-point leap at the start of trading.

The following season, Mandarin had retired but Fortria was still considered the dominant chaser in Ireland. Fortria won the Hermitage Chase over a two and half miles at Newbury, defeating Whitbread Gold Cup winner Hoodwinked by three lengths. He next ran in the Mackeson Gold Cup for the third time, where he was again allocated 12 st and faced two Champion Chase winners in Piperton and Sandy Abbot. Sandy Abbot led the field while Fortria lingered further back until the last open ditch, where he moved forward with a great leap at the fence. Coming to the last, he was strongly challenged by the lightly weighted School For Gamble and Owen’s Sedge but refused to yield and galloped on to win by three lengths.

Steve Whitton had replaced Mick Wadsworth in the hot seat at Colchester United, and Whitton made it his job to bring fans' favourite Dunne back to the club. He was captain at Dover and playing well, but Whitton stated that he would go straight into the U's starting line-up for their next fixture, knowing Dunne had previously stated that he would "leap at the chance to come back". He re-signed for a nominal fee on 14 December 1999 on a deal that would see him tied to the club until at least 2001. Dunne made his second debut for the club in an important 3–0 win at Layer Road against Luton Town on 17 December as the U's looked to turn their season around and pull away from the relegation zone.

Sunday, October 12, 1986, at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California Heading into Game 5, California looked set to earn their first-ever trip to a World Series. Rich Gedman's two-run home run in the second put the Red Sox up 2–0, but Bob Boone's home run off Bruce Hurst in the third cut the lead to 2–1. Bobby Grich, the previous night's hero, hit a two-run home run to give the Halos a 3–2 lead in the sixth inning; Red Sox center fielder Dave Henderson had tried to leap at the wall to catch Grich's long fly ball, but ended up deflecting it over the fence. The Angels added to their lead in the seventh off Bob Stanley on Rob Wilfong's RBI double with two on and Brian Downing's bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

In 1993, the log-flume was extended to have a third drop and was renamed from "Cherokee Falls" to "Nightmare Niagara". The extra drop made it the tallest log-flume in the UK throughout its operational life (this record was reverted to Loggers Leap at Thorpe Park as this ride used to hold the record before the new drop was added, and when that closed in 2015, the title went to Tiger Rock at Chessington World Of Adventures). In 1995, the Iron Wolf roller coaster (now located in a Polish theme park and known as the tic tac tornado) was installed, which broke away from the American theming of the park and was instead themed around the ITV gameshow Gladiators. From 1996 onwards, the park began to decline, and in 1997, Granada sold it to a company called Ventureworld which was headed by John Broome, a former Alton Towers developer.
