Estimates about total Ingress players vary wildly, and since there hasn't been much in the way of official clarification, it's likely that the user population is closer to the low-end estimates of around 350,000 than the high-end ones of over 7 million.
Here's my colleague Eric Johnson describing the basics two years ago: Ingress assigns players into two teams, the Enlightened and the Resistance, and challenges them to venture out into the real world for what is essentially a massive global game of capture the flag.
Dragos and other cybersecurity firms like FireEye and CrowdStrike have recently observed Iranian hacking groups like APT33, known also as Magnallium or Refined Kitten, looking for points of ingress into potential targets in the US, including the Department of Energy and US National Labs.
And having Type 21 has often made me live like I'm on borrowed time: I've run 21 half-marathons, gotten married, gotten pregnant, passed the bar exam, and become a level 21950 agent in the game Ingress (Resist!) since my diagnosis, to name a few.
The iPhone 13 and 21 Plus are IP27-rated, which means they can be submerged in up to 22016 feet of water for up to 30 minutes, according to Ingress Protection, the organization that "classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion" for products.
Why it matters: This gives Niantic, which also is the San Francisco-based creator of "Ingress" and "Pokemon Go," a chance to show how it can work with partners — and begin to turn the game system it has created into a platform others companies can build upon.
So the goal was for it to be playable in small towns, and I've played in a ton of small towns across the U.S., going to Ingress events and also Pokémon Go, so it may not be everywhere, but we did try to accommodate for that.
We built it around data, some of which came from Field Trip, so historical markers and public art are the places that are the key points of interest that you interact with in Ingress and Pokémon Go. These things are all kind of built on one another.
"There's a lot of Ingress in it — the idea of building it around certain locations, and those locations are what give you the things that you need to play the game and where the action takes place," John Hanke, Niantic's chief executive, said in an interview.
If you've been playing Ingress for a while, many of the changes here are "quality of life"-type tweaks: the UI has been cleaned up, and they've added all sorts of shortcuts and gestures to make it faster to do things like attack nearby portals or manage your inventory.
On its face, The Walking Dead: Our World is an Ingress/Pokémon Go style game where a real-world map of a player's surroundings is transformed into a post-apocalyptic landscape riddled with supply crates, walker encounters, and player-built shelters that serve as drop off points for survivors.
It's the button that taught people how to use a smartphone, but it had one key problem: it was one of the iPhone's weak points, a mechanical point of failure that would wear down over time and a point of ingress for water to flood the fragile interior.
According to Brett Piekarski, who led MAST and is now in charge of DCIST, the Fast Lightweight Autonomy (FLA) programme at DARPA will continue MAST's work with the aim of developing small drones that can "ingress and egress into buildings and navigate within those buildings at high speeds".
So they've been around for a while and they basically just ... this deal got struck with Nintendo with the licensing for all the Pokémon IP, and they basically just sort of applied it right to this same game engine that they had tuned for Ingress and here we are.
Borrowing much of what they've learned from Niantic's first game, Ingress, Pokémon Go is almost less of a game in its own right then it is, for lack of a better word, an excuse… but an excuse to do good things, instead of their faster/more convenient alternatives.
It's interesting, because I grew up in a small town out in west Texas, and one of the design goals for Ingress and for Pokémon Go is for the games to be fun and playable in big concentrated urban areas like San Francisco, but also in small towns.
The idea that the mobile world and the real world are connected via the phone and its various sensors is one of Niantic's hallmarks, and using an iconic title like Pokémon should attract a larger audience to experiment with this crossover form of gaming, as compared with Ingress.
When we have an Ingress event people typically come in on Friday night, Saturday morning they're meeting, planning their strategy for the day with the rest of the team, then there's four hours of game play, and then there's a big event at the end where we announce the winners.
The app is now official, but the details are still scarce, with the launch timeframe of just sometime next year, but it sounds like there will be significant influence from the Niantic game Ingress, which allows players to roam the real world collecting power-ups, defending locations and exploring their environment.
They'll have to deal with balancing the gameplay for an ever growing audience, and ever-constant efforts to tear the game apart by people looking for an advantage — things they've faced with Ingress, but that will get kicked up to 11 once they bring in a license/following as big as this one.
Hanke has been the captain of this ship (an apt metaphor given the company name's inspiration) since its days as a start-up within Google, steering it through its first game—Ingress, essentially Pokémon Go's older brother, using a similar augmented reality (AR) interface—and on towards the top of the mobile charts.
They've been doing in-person "anomaly" events around the world for their first title, Ingress, for years, and have held dozens of real-world events for Pokémon GO. Niantic uses these events as an opportunity to bring their most hardcore fans together, with tens of thousands of players taking over these parks for days.
"There are a lot more resources at our disposal now than at the time that we launched Pokémon Go." Ingress is a game that helped pioneer the concept of AR and location-based games, and its success gave Niantic the opportunity to work on two of the biggest pop culture brands on the planet.
Its users are responsible for helping create the data pool that determines where Pokéstops and gyms appear in Pokémon Go. In the early days of Ingress, Niantic formed a beginning pool of portal locations for the game based on historical markers, as well as a data set of public artwork mined from geo-tagged photos on Google.
It's not the best water and dust resistance we've seen on a gaming keyboard — that honor goes to Razer's IP54-rated BlackWidow, which should in theory hold up a little better to liquid and dust ingress than the K68, but it also only comes in a single shade of green LEDs, unlike the chromatic options of the K68 RGB.
Here's how it works: Here's what it looks like in action (note that this is from the closed beta, and that it might change considerably by the time it launches publicly): While the new Ingress portals that make their way in via this hub will likely turn into Pokéstops/Gyms in Pokémon GO eventually, it won't happen immediately.
Here's an example of what it looks like, with the Enlightened having a slight upper hand in Seattle: On the Ingress subreddit, members are cautiously welcoming new players who have only discovered the older game in light of the sweeping Pokémon Go craze, apparently keen to share their passion but also wary of comparisons that could be unflattering to their augmented world.
And then they have long had a game out called Ingress, which is basically a darker, more sort of sci-fi version of Pokémon Go, and that was the same sort of thing, where you would look at a map on your phone, people would gather together to go take over spots like a King of the Hill style kind of thing.
This platform is a key part of Niantic's game plan moving forward, with the company having as many people working on the platform as it has on its marquee money maker, Pokémon GO. There are tons of pieces that go into making things like GO or Ingress, and Niantic has spent the better part of the last decade figuring out how to make them all fit together.
Since 2007, there has been a complete closure of all of those points of ingress and egress, as well as the shoreline, so you have a land siege as well as a naval blockade where Israel literally controls everything that goes in and goes out—so much so that it can regulate and administer the number of calories [about 2000] that Palestinians can consume just above starvation.

We solemnly swear they were up to no good (but the inspired results are actually quite cool): Marauders Tech is an augmented reality interactive map and game that taps into some of the huge popularity of Niantic's Ingress and Pokemon Go. The world is transformed into a scavenger hunt of sorts, where you travel around an area looking for the ingredients for potions and spells, and compete against your friends to do so.
They talked about a book called Freedom™ by David Suarez, which centers around an out-of-control AI that taps a network of real-world operatives to control the world (the earliest hints of Niantic's first game, Ingress, already sneaking in here years before it's made.) John wanted to take his interest in AR and his background in maps and gaming and mash them all up and see what it could look like.

So we think about social as designing a game that is fun for people to do together in real life, and there's another layer to it in Ingress — we're just beginning to see elements of it in Pokémon Go today, but you'll see more in the future — where there are game design features that encourage people in groups who may live even in different cities or maybe even live hundreds of thousands of miles away to cooperate.
