Edward Weld (1705 East Lulworth8 December 1761 Lulworth Castle) was a wealthy English gentleman landowner and member of an old recusant family. He was responsible for initiating the internal Adam style decor and 18th century furnishing of a rare example of an early 17th century mock Jacobean castellated hunting lodge and extensive grounds he had inherited from his father. Weld also came to prominence due to his exposure in two separate legal cases which could have terminated his good standing by challenging his manhood in an ecclesiastical impotency trial and in the latter case, risked his liberty, if not his life, on account of an alleged involvement in the Jacobite rising of 1745. Both cases against him were dismissed.

As the play unravels, the cut is presented as a painful, immoral, controversial and ambiguous surgery, that cures a patient or victim from desire, or maybe even personality. It is apparently destined to dissidents and/or sick people but its virtues also make it attractive as a mean of freedom and salvation. The cut is pictured as a death of some sort, but leaving open to interpretation what part of the patient is dying. In the first part, Paul is reluctant to administrate the cut to a willing patient, and in the course of his frustrations and failure to convince him otherwise, let explode his angst and impotency to commit suicide, confessing in particular his deficient relationship with his wife.

Melville's writings did not attract the attention of women's studies scholars of the 1970s and 1980s, though his preference for sea-going tales that involved almost only males has been of interest to scholars in men's studies and especially gay and queer studies. Though his earlier works, influenced by the progressive writers of his times, showed a marked leftist and socialist leanings, his later work progressively became stark in portraying the darkness of the human psyche, as humanist values progressively declined around the Partition. His final works, which grew from the social climate and his own financial struggles, reflected an innate sense of human impotency towards darkness and contained satire that verged on dark comedy, as seen in his final work, Toba Tek Singh. It not only showed the influence of his own demons, but also that of the collective madness that he saw in the ensuing decade of his life. Mahfuz Khan's troops fled and the Battle of the Adyar River, which began on the morning of 24 October 1746, ended that evening with the French retaining control over Fort St. George. The humiliating defeat made the Nawab realize the impotency of Indian armoury against European techniques of warfare. According to William Dalrymple (historian), it was immediately clear that nothing in the Mughal armoury could match the techniques of 18th century European warfare, particularly the “invention of screws for elevating the guns gave the artillery greater precision and increased the fire power of the foot soldier, giving them an edge in the battle against the cavalry.” It showed that a small body of infantry armed with the new flintlock muskets and bayonets and supported by quick-firing mobile artillery, could now scatter a whole army just as easily as they could in Europe.

Sometimes this was a simple kind of magic meant to make a husband stay "true" to his wife, other times it included aims of impotency or obedience. The Dutch Republic engaged in no major wars since the conclusion of the War of the Austrian Succession at the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, and allowed their army and navy to deteriorate through lack of funding and experience.
