By evening, fire crews were hiking up to the site, and Baxter expected the fire to be contained at by midnight. However, heavy Santa Ana winds kicked up at 5:30 pm, and the fire exploded in size. Fifty men on a crew led by Supervisor Nash-Boulden were trapped, but they managed to survive after lighting a backfire on the canyon slope, pulling in fresh air and opening an escape route. High temperatures, low humidity and winds sent the fire burning quickly through the thick chaparral covering the mountains.

Bob Straub, a then-sophomore at Dartmouth College, was hiking up the mountain at the time. The couple married in 1943, shortly before Bob Straub was sent to the European theatre with the United States Army Quartermaster Corps during World War II. Due to poor weather conditions and the lack of a flight plan, the crash site was not located until May 31. Colonel Hale and Major Slusser of the Virginia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol discovered the accident site approximately 300 feet below the summit of Brushy Mountain at 2:30 in the afternoon. Later that day rescue workers were able to reach the area after hiking up four miles of steep terrain. Three passengers, including Murphy, had been thrown uphill from the wreckage and were identified on site.

There are 54 petroglyphs found there. There is a shorter () boat-in only, well-maintained trail that heads out to the wild ocean beaches from Erickson's Bay on the northwestern side of Ozette Lake. Many people enjoy walks around the perimeter trail at Lower Tokai, or on the numerous single track paths through the Fynbos, where others prefer to frequent Upper Tokai Park for its mountain biking trails and hiking up Constantiaberg. There are three gates at Lower Tokai, with parking available, and one at Middle Tokai, at the picnic and braai site, where people wishing to use Upper Tokai can park.

Although the mountain is part of the Phoenix Mountains, the mountain is most closely associated with Sunnyslope High School. Each year, the freshmen class is assigned the task of hiking up the mountain and giving the "S" a fresh coat of white paint. At the end of the Homecoming football game, the "S" is traditionally outlined with red flares which are ignited by members of the freshmen football team. In June 2004, students organized to change the "S" into a "J" in honor of Josh Conard, a member of the Sunnyslope basketball team who was killed by a drunk driver.

As previously noted, El Capitan is located within the boundaries of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, a fee-area located on U.S. Highway 62/180 between Carlsbad and El Paso. The southern terminus of the Guadalupe range, El Capitan is guarded by cliffs on three sides, and those faces are rarely climbed due to the unstable condition of the rock and the sheer nature of the peak. While no trail to the summit has been developed, hikers can climb up to the top of El Capitan by first climbing to near the summit of Guadalupe Peak on the developed 4.5-mile Guadalupe Peak Trail, scrambling down to the south onto the Guadalupe Peak-El Capitan saddle, and then hiking up the back of El Capitan to the summit.

Bimberi Peak can be reached along the Australian Alps Walking Track, from the east through the ACT, or from the west through NSW, approximately north northwest of that ascends the southern ridge. When climbing Bimberi from the west, a dirt road, that is closed during winter, leads to a locked gate at Currango Plain, called Pockets Saddle Road Gate, a gain of . The trailhead commences at an elevation of as an easy two-hour walk along a fire trail passes by Oldfields Hut and crosses several streams, before reaching a gate at Murray's Gap, an ascent of over . From the ascent is best accessed by breaking away from the trail and hiking up the southern ridge of the summit, taking about 3-3.5 hours to climb over .
