Aaton cameras have a system called AatonCode that can "jam sync" with a timecode-based audio recorder and prints a digital timecode directly on the edge of the film itself. However, the most commonly used system at the moment is unique identifier numbers exposed on the edge of the film by the film stock manufacturer (KeyKode is the name for Kodak's system). These are then logged (usually by a computer editing system, but sometimes by hand) and recorded along with audio timecode during editing. In the case of no better alternative, a handclap can work if done clearly and properly, but often a quick tap on the microphone (provided it is in the frame for this gesture) is preferred.

Over time, this increased demand for used units (such as the 1980 Roland TR-808 drum machine and Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer). Late 1970s-era drum machines used tuned resonance voice circuits for pitched drum sounds and shaped white noise for others. The TR-808 improves on these designs, by using detuned square wave oscillators (for the cow bell and cymbal sounds) and analogue reverberation (for the handclap sound). The demand for the analog synth sound led to development of a variety of analog modeling synthesizers—which emulate analog VCOs and VCFs using samples, software, or specialized digital circuitry, and the construction of new analog keyboard synths such as the Alesis Andromeda, Prophet '08, and Little Phatty, as well as semi-modular and modular units.
"Move" received generally positive reviews. Allmusic reviewer Jared Johnson called the song "as relevant as anything MercyMe have ever done". Andy Argyrakis of Today's Christian Music described the song as "foot stomping", and Kevin Davis of Christian Music Review commented that the song "has a fantastic rock-dance arrangement like 'This Love' by Maroon 5". Tris McCall of The Star-Ledger was more negative in his review, commenting that the song "sounds so much like Maroon 5 that it’s almost embarrassing", and that "in a music industry governed by sanity, the two songwriters [Adam Levine of Maroon 5 and Bart Millard of MercyMe] would sing shoulder to shoulder and reach a common audience".
Of the five raw elements that make up the "Humpty Dance" drum track, one is a sample from "Sing a Simple Song" by Sly and the Family Stone, in the form of a one-measure-long drum loop. Digital Underground incorporated the Family Stone drum loop with four other raw elements; a deep tonal kick drum that alternated between two bass notes, a handclap snare (also a sample, taken from "Theme From the Black Hole" by the band Parliament), drum-machine hi-hats running continuously throughout which were programmed to 8th-notes, and a guitar hit happening once every bar, all assembled into the now-familiar pattern that forms the Humpty Dance drum track. The vocal sample that happens in the song's chorus sections is from Parliament's "Let's Play House" from their 1980 album, Trombipulation.
The album has been noted for its minimal and rhythm- driven sound. Eric Carr of Pitchfork described it as "an adventure in starkness", going on to write: "Like some of the best minimalists in music, Spoon use the null and void to create tension which bolsters and sets apart every nuance of the music-- every handclap, every reverberating crash, every beep from the synthesizer." Heather Phares of AllMusic wrote that the group "follow(ed up) such a cathartic album as Girls Can Tell with a collection of tougher, leaner, and meaner songs like "All the Pretty Girls Go to the City," which sounds like the inverse of Girls' "Everything Hits at Once"". Daniel Pike of BBC found the album to be "terribly, terribly British" in sound, characterizing it as a "distinctly lo-fi post-punk offering" and noting "an air of tenderness and sincerity about" it.
She then dusts her hands off with an oscillating fan, before stopping for a moment, staring at the plastic cup on the table, Kendrick takes the cup and lightly taps it on the table, which is followed by her starting to tap the cup on the table and handclap the rhythm. She puts the cup down and washes her hands while taking a plate of food from the chef and walking out into the dining area, where all the customers start drumming the cups in various ways on their tables. The camera then follows Kendrick around while she is singing as well as collecting dirty dishes and cleaning tables, before it shoots around her and back out wide, showing the entire diner playing their cups and performing the routine during the bridge section of the song. It then cuts back to her, with Kendrick walking back to the kitchen and passing the chef, who is now drumming with a cup instead of wooden utensils, and follows her back to the table where she made the biscuits.
