Of the poem, Leaf by Leaf the Roses Fall! Howe said in 1889: Leaf by leaf the roses fall, Drop by drop the springs run dry, One by one, beyond recall, Summer beauties fade and die; But the roses bloom again. And the springs will gush anew In the pleasant April rain, And the summer's sun and dew. So in hours of deepest gloom, When the springs of gladness fail.
The editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern, William Henry Monk, adapted a tune by Stuttgart organist Conrad Kocher as the music for "As with Gladness Men of Old". The tune originally consisted of a 7.6.7.6.7.7.6 metre, but Monk removed the fifth phrase to create a more balanced tune. Dix personally did not like the tune, which was ironic as it was later titled "Dix" as a tribute to him.
The hymn eventually regained popularity as a carol and continued to be published in hymnals as well as in Christmas chapters of them. It has continued to be used in the Church of England. "As with Gladness Men of Old" has also been performed in concerts outside of a church setting. In 1871, the hymn was first published in the United States in the Episcopal Church of the United States' hymnal.

It was equated to the Tuamotuan constellation Te Kiva, meaning "frigatebird", which could either represent the figure of Boötes or just Arcturus. However, Arcturus may instead be the Tuamotuan star called Turu. The Hawaiian name for Arcturus as a single star was likely Hoku-leʻa, which means "star of gladness", or "clear star". In the Marquesas Islands, Arcturus was probably called Tau-tou and was the star that ruled the month approximating January.
"On était alors en carême, et Thomas observait avec une scrupuleuse exactitude les jeûnes et les abstinences de l'Église, jeûnes et abstinences dont la rigueur était doublée et par ses autres souffrances, et par l'insuffisante nourriture donnée aux prisonniers." Charles Dallet, Histoire de l'Église de Corée, p. 561. In the same way, nothing could make him omit any of his ordinary practices of piety. He was severely tortured with amazing constancy and gladness.

And the roses in their bloom Droop like maidens wan and pale, We shall find some hope that lies Like a silent germ apart, Hidden far from careless eyes, In the garden of the heart. Some sweet hope to gladness wed, That will spring afresh and new, When grief's winter shall have fled. Giving place to sun and dew. Some sweet hope that breathes of spring, Through the weary, weary time, Budding for its blossoming.

Warfield told The New York Times how she was greatly satisfied with cabaret, which allowed her to "express not only the sadness, gladness and hate in opera, but the smallest emotions".

" Drowned in Sound writer Peter White referred to What It Is to Burn as an "absolutely gut smokingly fantastic record." FasterLouder Roby Anson described it as an "album of sadness, gladness, big chunky guitar riffs, smart chord progressions and a rhythm section that chugs along nicely in each song." LAS Magazine writer Andy Vaughn noted the Glassjaw influence added "a great deal of intensity" to the album, which he felt "would be missing otherwise." He commended Finch for making an "extremely strong debut.

59 Before joining the RAAF, Dawe had worked as a postman. John Kinsella has proposed that Dawe's experiences during that time are echoed in the final lines of "Homecoming": "Homecoming" is included in the 1971 collection of Dawe's poetry Condolences of the Season and in his Sometimes Gladness: Collected Poems, 1954–1992. It also appears in several anthologies of Australian literature, including Two Centuries of Australian Poetry (Oxford University Press, 1988) and The Macmillan Anthology of Australian Literature (Macmillan, 1990).
Both had been captives of pirates, Gernando seized on this very beach while his wife was recovering from seasickness. They split up to search the island, Enrico first singing of his unending gratitude to his friend for helping his escape. Silvia has managed to get a good look at him, too kind-looking to be a man, but not wearing a skirt either. She marvels as well at a new kind of fear that causes gladness: yet more questions for Constanza.

As an auxiliary bishop, he was responsible for the Northwest Region of the Archdiocese, which encompasses Oakland and Lapeer Counties.
Ring & Jaggard (1999), p. 277. Bobbie also appears in "Dudley Is Back to Normal", though this story was later rewritten to be a Mr. Mulliner story without Bobbie. In the original version of the story, Dudley is charmed by Bobbie and falls for her again.
And I was the one who got things jumping by going around > collecting dimes and quarters from the rather stiff audience standing around > in the gallery and coming back with three huge gallon jugs of California > Burgundy and getting them all piffed so that by eleven o'clock when Alvah > Goldbrook was reading his poem 'Wail' drunk with arms outspread everybody > was yelling 'Go! Esther and Mordechai writing the second letter of Purim. Aert de Gelder (1685). This section, perhaps an addition to the coherent narrative of 1:1 through , recapitulates the core reversals: relief from persecution, turning 'sorrow into gladness' and 'mourning into a holiday' (). For commemoration by future generations, a two-day holiday is newly instituted, reflecting the original feasting on the fourteenth of Adar in the provinces and a day later in Susa, with Haman's casting of lots (purim) providing an etymology for the festival.
Tate Gallery began his second season in the Gladness Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh in which he was matched against older horses. He finished third behind the four-year-old Lidhame with Timeform reporting that he "hung left and lacked enthusiasm". Despite his poor effort at the Curragh he was sent to England for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse on 3 May. He was ridden by Tony Ives after O'Brien had first offered the ride to the recently retired Lester Piggott.
"As with Gladness Men of Old" is an Epiphany hymn, written by William Chatterton Dix on 6 January 1859 (Epiphany) while he was ill in bed. Though considered by many as a Christmas carol, it is found in the Epiphany section of many hymnals and still used by many churches. The music was adapted by William Henry Monk in 1861 from a tune written by Conrad Kocher in 1838. The hymn is based on the visit of the Biblical magi in the Nativity of Jesus.
In both, there was the same evangelic fervour, in both the same intense personal devotion to Jesus. But whilst Steele seemed to think of Him more frequently as her "bleeding, dying Lord "—dwelling on His sufferings in their physical aspect, Havergal more often referred to His living help and sympathy, recognized with gladness His present claims as "Master" and " King," and anticipated almost with ecstasy His second coming. Looking at the whole of Steele's hymns, there is a wider range of thought than in Miss Havergal's compositions. Steele treats a greater variety of subjects.
Apalachee began his three-year-old season by winning the Group Three Gladness Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh in April. He was then sent to England for the 2000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket Racecourse on 4 May. With Piggott in the saddle, he started at odds of 4/9 against eleven opponents, making him the shortest-priced favourite since Colombo in 1934. His support in the betting market was despite rumours that he had developed respiratory problems and his unimpressive appearance before the start.
Denicke wrote the text as a paraphrase of Psalm 100 (known as Jubilate), which calls on the believer to serve God with gladness in joyful sound. The psalm begins in English "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord", according to the Book of Common Prayer. Denicke rephrased a work by Cornelius Becker, "Jauchzet dem Herren alle Welt" from the Becker Psalter of 1602, to polish its language according to the poetry standards of Martin Opitz. Instead of the four stanzas in the Becker psalter, he wrote six stanzas following the psalm.

O happy fault that earned for us so great, so glorious a Redeemer! O truly blessed night, worthy alone to know the time and hour when Christ rose from the underworld! This is the night of which it is written: The night shall be as bright as day, dazzling is the night for me, and full of gladness. The sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness, washes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners, drives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty.
Cara is used by the 6th-century poet Flavius Cresconius Corippus, Postquam venere verendam Caesilris ante caram (In Laud em Justini Minoris). Cheer was at first qualified with epithets, both of joy and gladness and of sorrow; compare She thanked Dyomede for ale ... his gode chere (Chaucer, Troylus) with If they sing ... tis with so dull a cheere (Shakespeare, Sonnets, xcvii.). An early transference in meaning was to hospitality or entertainment, and hence to food and drink, good cheer. The sense of a shout of encouragement or applause is a late use.
In the final three series, a framed photo of Edie can be seen on Barry and Glenda's mantelpiece. In one episode Barry talks about ghosts and Glenda asks if he had seen her mother. Barry's response in the negative includes immense gladness, in that she scared him enough alive. For the first few series in which she appeared, Edie was extremely concerned with her reputation in the neighbourhood: whenever there was company, Edie would try to put on a posh, educated voice—which would suddenly vanish when she was shouting for (or at) Wesley.

After the wedding of her friend Miss Lavendar, Anne first realized that there was a possibility that Gilbert felt more for her than friendship, and "The page of girlhood had been turned, as by an unseen finger, and the page of womanhood was before her with all its charm and mystery, its pain and gladness." Anne once again walks with Gilbert where the narrator notes: "Behind them the little stone house brooded among the shadows. It was lonely but not forsaken. It had not yet done with dreams and laughter and joy of life".
Royal Gait was a bay gelding with a small white star and a white sock on his left hind leg bred by Ian H Wills. In an awkward set of visits to the Grange, Heathcliff begins to exact his revenge, seducing Isabella Linton in order to gain control of Thrushcross Grange at Edgar's death, and trapping her in an abusive and terrifying marriage.
"As with Gladness Men of Old" used Matthew 2:1–12 as a theme to compare the journey of the Biblical magi to visit the baby Jesus to each Christian's personal pilgrimage and as a reminder that it is not the value of the gifts, it is the value of giving and adoration to Jesus that is what Christians should seek. It is the only well-known Epiphany hymn or carol about the Biblical magi that avoids referring to them as either "magi" or "kings" and does not state how many there were.
The Baptism of Saint Prince Vladimir, by Viktor Vasnetsov (1890) The Primary Chronicle reports that in the year 987, after consultation with his boyars, Vladimir the Great sent envoys to study the religions of the various neighboring nations whose representatives had been urging him to embrace their respective faiths. The result is described by the chronicler Nestor. Of the Muslim Bulgarians of the Volga the envoys reported there is no gladness among them, only sorrow and a great stench. He also reported that Islam was undesirable due to its taboo against alcoholic beverages and pork.

The president told the civil representatives that he will come incognito to talk to people in the streets, indirectly hinting that if they want true change they need to keep asking for it so the politicians can't pretend they don't understand what is asked of them. On 8 November, in the seventh day of protests, Klaus Iohannis went to University Square, where he talked with some protesters and listened to their demands. While many expressed gladness at president's presence in the square, others booed, whistled and chanted "Shame on you", "Resignation", "Thieves" and "We don't want you".
A boar is eaten at Yule in Freyr's honour and the boar can only be carved by a man of unstained reputation. Guerber says that Freyr was the patron of gladness and harmony and was often invoked by married couples who wished for the same, and that this led to the custom of married couples who actually succeeded in living in harmony for a given period being rewarded with a piece of boar meat. Guerber states that it is this tradition that became the flitch of bacon custom after converting boar meat into bacon.Guerber, pp.125-126.

Various items sold at the Baliuag Pasalubong Center in Baliuag, Bulacan The tradition of giving a pasalubong is of great cultural importance for Filipinos as it strengthens the bond with the immediate family, relatives, and friends. In rarer instances, it can even be used to forge stronger relationships with someone you may not know that well, as with someone you may be meeting for the first time. The gesture of handing out pasalubong emphasizes the gladness at reuniting with one's loved ones and the relief at being back home safe. It is also a sign of thoughtfulness.

In 1918 and 1919 the play toured the U.S. and Canada with 19-year-old Viola Harper (nee Harpman) in the title role.

Throughout the narrative, the word Rose is used both as the name of the titular lady and as an abstract symbol of female sexuality.
No other player in Division I history has even recorded 15 blocks in a single game. Despite showing similar statistics otherwise, Gladness' blocks per game average dropped to 4.5 for his senior year. It is speculated that opposing players now knew of his shot-blocking ability and avoided getting too close for him to block their shots. Although he did not repeat as the NCAA season shots blocked leader, he did graduate having blocked 396 shots in only three seasons of Division I basketball, which was good enough to be in the all-time top 25 when he graduated.
At this time a plaque was also paced on the grave saying that Flynn "brought gladness and rejoicing to the wilderness and the solitary places". An appropriate boulder could not be found nearby Alice Springs, and the surrounding MacDonnell Ranges, and one was chosen from the Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve located north. This eight-tonne boulder was taken without permission from the Traditional Owners of the site, the Warumungu and Kaytetye people. The Warumungu and Kaytetye believe that these boulders have extraordinary powers and that their damage, or removal, can have life threatening consequences for them.
Communion is often accompanied by music. Most Lutheran hymnals have a section of communion hymns or hymns appropriate for the celebration of the Lord's Supper. Some of these hymns, such as I Come, O Savior, to Thy Table, Thy Table I Approach, and Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele (an English language translation of which is Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness), follow a Eucharist theme throughout, whilst others such as Wide Open Stand the Gates are sung in preparation or during distribution of the sanctified elements. Chorale preludes on their themes are traditionally played during communion (sub communione).
It was later included in The Hymnal 1982 with amended lyrics for the fourth verse. By 1875, the Baptist Church's Triennial Convention in the United States had started publishing "As with Gladness Men of Old" in The Service of Song for Baptist Churches hymnal. When the hymn is used in the United Methodist Church, it can be presented as a church reading for Epiphany as well as in its regular musical setting. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints use the hymn, though set to a piece of music by Dan Carter instead of "Dix".
On 5 March 2000, the Church of the Annunciation of the Theotókos was consecrated by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, with Metropolitans Ioakeim and Nikitas, Bishop Dionysios, and a significant number of clergy from overseas assisting. During the service, the entire congregation followed the Patriarch in circumambulating the church. The Patriarch told the people present that the only thing which can really lead man to the land of gladness is the perfect love for his fellow man and for God. The message from the Patriarchate of Constantinople is one of love for the people of Southeast Asia, one which assures people everywhere of the immeasurable love of Christ.
The Grade II listed Scarborough Spa complex is home to the Scarborough Spa Orchestra, the last remaining seaside orchestra in the UK. The orchestra gives ten concerts every week during the summer months, playing music from an extensive repertoire of classical and light music with no programme repeats. It became famous during the 1950s and 1960s when concerts from the Palm Court in Scarborough were frequently featured on BBC radio, conducted by Max Jaffa. Former conductors include the composer of the waltz 'Nights of Gladness', Charles Ancliffe. The globally successful pop / soul singer Robert Palmer spent his teenage years in Scarborough, attending Scarborough Boys' High School.
"And gaze upon King Solomon" meant "gaze upon a King to whom all peace belongs" (reading the name Solomon as a play on the word "His peace") — that is, upon the King of kings, God. "Even upon the crown wherewith his mother has crowned him" referred to the Tabernacle, which was called a crown because just as a crown has beautiful designs, so was the Tabernacle beautifully designed. "In the day of his espousals" referred to Sinai (at the Revelation). "And in the day of the gladness of his heart" referred to Jerusalem (when God caused God's presence to dwell in the Temple in Jerusalem).
This can be translated as: Blessed God, who feedest us from our youth, and providest food for all flesh, fill our hearts with joy and gladness, that we, having enough to satisfy us, may abound in every good work, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and praise and power for all ages. Amen. The grace was widely used in the fourth century and is based on earlier Hebrew prayers. It was translated from the Greek and adopted by Oriel College, Oxford. Presumably influenced by Henry Jenkyns, who was a Fellow of Oriel, Hatfield adopted this grace practically verbatim.
Shawn Bradley is tied for second all-time in single game blocks (14). In basketball, a block (short for blocked shot) occurs when a defender deflects or stops a field goal attempt without committing a foul. The National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I players on this list all accomplished the rare feat of blocking 13 shots in a single game. The 1985–86 season was the first that statistics on blocks were first compiled by the NCAA. The highest single game block total by one player in NCAA Division I men's basketball history is 16, set by Mickell Gladness of Alabama A&M; on February 24, 2007 against Texas Southern.
Among them, Gladness is the only player to have reached 16 blocks, nobody has blocked 15, five players have reached 14, and twelve players have hit 13 blocks. David Robinson once blocked 14 shots in a game while playing for Navy, and is the only player on this list to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In the era before blocks were officially tracked by the entire NCAA, on December 3, 1983, Hakeem Olajuwon blocked 16 shots in a game while playing for the University of Houston against Biscayne. The blocks are a school record and would have tied the NCAA Division I record.
Professor Ghosh had described 'Balmikir Kabita' of Binoy Majumder was continuation of Ratnakar Balmiki (first poet) through 'Balmikir Pratibha' by Rabindranath Thakur. Ghosh stated that Binoy's poem 'Eka Eka Katha Bali'is a Lyrics to Lonely Talk like a vision of poetic melancholy by John Milton Or like 'Teach me half the gladness/That thy brain must know;/Such harmonious madness/ From my lips would flow,/The world should listen then, as I am listening now' by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Though he knew his predecessor Bankim Chandra, first successful Novelist in Bengali - Binoy's mother tongue, had written 'Keo Kakhno Eka Thakiona' (No one lives alone).
Starshell later expressed feelings of gladness that she had worked with West, since gathering the experience early in her career helped her understand how the music business works. She explained, stating: "In this industry, it's about networking and relationships." Inspired by 1980s synthpop icons such as Phil Collins, Gary Numan and Boy George for the material on 808s & Heartbreak, West considered the tracks to be more minimal and functional due to him making usage of the Roland TR-808 drum machine. West stated his intention was to juxtapose the mechanical sounds of the Auto-Tune and 808s with the more traditional sounds of taiko drums and choir monks.
The main founder of the Edinburgh settlement was Sir Richard Lodge, a history professor. In proposing the foundation of the settlement Professor Lodge acknowledged that while Edinburgh was a fair city it had some 'foul spots' in it. The first location suggested for the settlement would be in the district that lay between the Cowgate and the Cannongate in Edinburgh's old town. He suggested that if the fellows and students of the University could do anything to 'brighten the lives and bring sympathy and gladness to some of the homes in those dark spots' they would be going some way to repay the debt the College owed to the city.
The continuation "" (and the sheep of his pasture) is presented with expression by the lower voices, then repeated by pure triads in A major and B major, first by three soprano parts, then three alto parts, and finally three male voices, with a solo violin. As a first link to the first movements, the line "He has made us, and not we ourselves, his people" is repeated with the music used for "", connecting both the musical form and the content of being created God's people and serving him with gladness. The movement closes with a reprise of the first topic, this time ending pianissimo.

The Gold Coast historian and pastor, Carl Christian Reindorf (1834 – 1917) narrated the success of the Basel missionaries between 1850 and 1875, capturing in part the legacy of Theophilus Opoku’s life and work:. > “ Congregations had been gathered, schools founded, native assistants > educated, the Bible translated into two languages, other books for school > and church published in the native tongues, workshops opened, agriculture > promoted. Supporters of the pope outside the United Nations in 2008 with a banner quoting Matthew 16 Pope St. Clement of Rome, c. 99, stated in a letter to the Corinthians: "Indeed you will give joy and gladness to us, if having become obedient to what we have written through the Holy Spirit, you will cut out the unlawful application of your zeal according to the exhortation which we have made in this epistle concerning peace and union" (Denziger §41, emphasis added). St. Clement of Alexandria wrote on the primacy of Peter c. 200: "the blessed Peter, the chosen, the pre- eminent, the first among the disciples, for whom alone with Himself the Savior paid the tribute" (Jurgens §436).
He often visited relatives in Piddington and mentioned Piddington in several poems including ′A New Ballard Of Charity′Seeds Of Time published 1922 Riverside Press Cambridge ″...the primroses of Bagley Wood, old apple trees at Piddington.″ and ′The Patriot′ from Loyalties published 1919 ″... fields below the rookery that comfortably looks upon the little street of Piddington.″ His gravestone is engraved with words from Amaranth:- ″In some new brain the sleeping dust will waken Courage and love that conquered and were done Called from a night by thought of man forsaken Will know again the gladness of the sun.″ John Drinkwater was related to Flora Thompson through their ancestors:- Drinkwater's great-great-grandfather and Flora's great-great-grandmother were siblings.
In any case, Gengshi Emperor's regime was only able to obtain nominal submission from many regions of the empire, and one of the troublesome regions was north of the Yellow River. The Emperor considered dispatching a general to try to pacify the region, and his cousin Liu Ci (劉賜), who had succeeded Liu Yan as prime minister, endorsed Liu Xiu for that task. Liu Yan's political enemies, including Li and Zhu, opposed, but after Liu Ci repeatedly endorsed Liu Xiu, the Gengshi Emperor relented and, in autumn of AD 23, he sent Liu Xiu to the region north of the Yellow River. Liu Xiu was initially met with great gladness by the people north of the Yellow River.
Reflecting on The Alphabet of Grace in Now and Then, Buechner offers the following famous summary of the message at the heart of the work: > [I]f I were called upon to state in a few words the essence of everything I > was trying to say both as a novelist and as a preacher, it would be > something like this: Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery > that it is. Before formal Hall, the following Latin grace is recited by one of the student bible clerks. The translation is reputedly by Erasmus in his Convivium Religiosum of a grace recorded by St John Chrysostom: > > Blessed God, who feedest us from our youth and providest food to all > flesh, fill our hearts with joy and gladness, that we, having enough to > satisfy us, may abound in every good work, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to > whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour, praise and power for all > ages.Adams, Reginald, The College Graces of Oxford and Cambridge The > Perpetua Press, Oxford (1992) pp. 26–27 and 93 (reference for the section) .
It was for Nights of Gladness, written in 1912, that Ancliffe became most famous. The waltz became so popular all over the world that in later years the BBC named a long-running series of light music programmes after it, using it as the signature tune Musicweb international History of Broadcasting : Asa Briggs More than a hundred years after it was written it is still to be found included on many CD compilations of light music, played by notable orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Presto classical After leaving the services Charles Ancliffe was a regular conductor of the Scarborough Military Band, and was also a frequent guest conductor of his own works on BBC Radio.
There was great gladness and courage on him then, and ale and food were given out to them all. And there was a gold cup put in the hand of the master of the house, and Cormac was wondering at it, for the number of the shapes on it, and for the strangeness of the work. "There is a stranger thing yet about it," the man said; "let three lying words be spoken under it, and it will break into three, and then let three true words be spoken under it, and it will be as good as before." So he said three lying words under it, and it broke in three pieces.
There can be no harm if ignorant and simple people or religious women, light candles in honor of the martyrs. We are not born, but reborn, Christians, and that which when done for idols was detestable is acceptable when done for the martyrs. As in the case of the woman with the precious box of ointment, it is not the gift that merits reward, but the faith that inspires it. As for lights in the churches, he adds that in all the churches of the East, whenever the gospel is to be read, lights are lit, though the sun be rising (jam sole rutilante), not in order to disperse the darkness, but as a visible sign of gladness (ad signum ketitiae demonstrandum).
Teaching Torah: A Treasury of Insights and Activities, page 156. The Tabernacle that the Israelites Built (illustration from the 1897 Bible Pictures and What They Teach Us by Charles Foster) Reading "and they brought the Tabernacle," a Midrash taught that on the day that the Tabernacle was set up, the Israelites rejoiced greatly because God then dwelt in their midst. And the people sang the words of Song of Songs "Go forth, O you daughters of Zion, and gaze upon King Solomon, even upon the crown wherewith his mother has crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart." "O you daughters of Zion" were the children who are distinguished as God's from among the peoples.
Each minister will kiss the cross on the back of their phelonion before putting it on. When vesting for the Divine Liturgy priests and deacons say the following vesting prayer as they put on the garments: :My soul shall rejoice in the Lord, for He hath clothed me in the garment of salvation, and with the vesture of gladness has He covered me; He hath placed a crown upon me as on a bridegroom, and He hath adorned me with comeliness. When a bishop is vesting before the Divine Liturgy the prayer above is read by the Protodeacon, as the subdeacons place the vestment upon him. Sometimes this prayer is chanted by the choir during the vesting of the bishop.
In Dahomey In Dahomey (1903) was the first full-length African-themed musical comedy. Led by Bert Williams and George Walker, it broke the color line on Broadway. The musical tells a story about a group of African Americans who find a pot of gold and move to Africa to become rulers of Dahomey. The film's song "Swing Along" captured the mindset of black artists. In this song, dialect speech encouraged black audiences to “lif’ a’ yo’ heads up high, Wif’ pride an’ gladness beaming’ from ya’ eye,” encouraged people to “swing along” despite the pervasive white gaze; to ”swing along” even though “white fo’ks jealous when you’se walkin’ two by two”; to “swing along despite the horrors and dehumanization of life under Jim Crow”.
At first, the deliverance of the city's Jewish community was received with gladness by world's Jewry, insomuch that the 12th day of the lunar month Adar, the day of the town's deliverance, was transcribed in the Jewish record books and in the Scroll of Fasting as a day of public celebration, and one whereon it was forbidden for Jews to fast.Megillat Taanit, s.v. "And on the twelfth day thereof (the lunar month of Adar) is the day of Trajan" (explained in the Babylonian Talmud, Taanit 18b, to mean the day in which Lulianos and Paphos were executed, but also their executioner). Later, the day of celebration was cancelled, since it had come at the expense of the lives of two great rabbis.
At the start of the 1982 season Achieved was regarded as a serious contender for both the 2000 Guineas and The Derby. He began his campaign at the Curragh in April when he started odds-on favourite for the seven furlong Gladness Stakes but was beaten a short head by the four-year-old Kilian. Later that month he won the Tetrarch Stakes over the same course and distance but was not particularly impressive as he came home a length in front of Exhilarate. In the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse on 1 May he started the 15/2 second favourite and kept on well without ever looking likely to win, finishing sixth of the twenty-six runners behind the French colt Zino.
16 The Unitarian Universalist hymnbook, Singing the Living Tradition contains eight of his hymns, including #45 "Now While the day in Trailing Splendor", #53 "I walk the unfrequented Road", #96 "I Cannot Think of them as Dead", #105 "From Age to Age", "#114 "Forward Through the Ages", #269 "Lo the Day of Days is Here", "#270 "O Day of Light and Gladness", and #272 "O Prophet Souls of All the Years".Unitarian Universalist Association, "Singing the Living Tradition", Boston, MA, 2000, p. 656 His notable hymn, "Forward Through the Ages", was an anthem of the Social Gospel movement. Written while he served the church in California, it replaced the militaristic imagery of Onward Christian Soldiers with a broader evocation of spiritual mission and unity.
Prince of Birds began his second season in the Group Three Tetrarch Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh on 23 April. Ridden by John Reid started at odds of 4/1 and won by one and a half lengths from the Dermot Weld-trained favourite Careafolie (winner of the Gladness Stakes). Three weeks after his win in the Tetrarch, Prince of Birds was one of fourteen colts to contest the Irish 2000 Guineas over one mile at the Curragh and with Reid riding the stable's more fancied contender Caerwent, he was partnered by Declan Gillespie. The Minstrel Stakes winner Executive Perk started favourite ahead of the French challenger Dramatis and Caerwent with Prince of Birds next in the betting on 9/1.
So bring on the > congenial days celebrated with spirit, joy, good manners and gladness (Pérez > I 1988:183). The above editorial, taken from La Independencia of July 24, 1908, touches on three interesting themes related to the mamarrachos: firstly, the author demonstrates the dogged admiration for all things European that lay at the root of the belief among some Hispano-Cubans that the mamarrachos was a kind of Venetian Carnival gone wrong. Secondly, the hoped-for purification of the mamarrachos would include the removal of African or Afro-Cuban elements. Finally, it seems that the authority figures preferred to limit their efforts at controlling and regulating the mamarrachos to issuing proclamations (see also the sections on opposition to the conga in the article on 'Conga').
The chant of early Christianity through to the end of the 5th century had its root in the Synagogue, from whence early Christians borrowed the traditions of the chanting of psalms, singing of hymns and cantillation. There is some evidence from Acts of the Apostles that early Christians stayed close to contemporary Jewish traditions, for example Acts 2:46-47 states that "with one accord in the Temple, and breaking bread from house to house did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people". Socrates of Constantinople wrote that antiphony was introduced into Christian worship by Ignatius of Antioch (died 107) after he saw a vision of two choirs of angels.A.C. Zenos, ed.
Their agreement was signed in the Dominican Monastery of the Blessed Virgin on Rabbits' Island on 23 March 1266. The new treaty confirmed the division of the country along the Danube. A later document issued by Béla in July 1267, remembers Philip's efforts with a warm heart, "in order to make the crown's brighter state and to serve our country's integrity and gladness, [Philip acted] as a mediator, even as a shield and a barrier to create inner peace [...], exposed himself to heavy spending, dangers and tribulation". In addition to the peace treaty, Béla entrusted Philip and Smaragd to warn the baptized Cumans – who fought on Stephen's side in the war – to keep their faith, otherwise expel them from the kingdom.

Stanzas I–III of the poem describe the poet's joy while taking a morning walk after a night of rain. In stanzas IV–VII, the poet is suddenly beset by anxious thoughts and fears about his own future, as well as the future of all poets, saying "We Poets in our youth begin in gladness; / But thereof come in the end despondency and madness." In Stanza VII, Wordsworth recounts past poets who died at a young age. In line 43, he "thought of Chatterton, the marvellous Boy / The sleepless Soul that perished in his pride", referring to Thomas Chatterton, an 18th-century poet who committed suicide at the age of 17 after duping many in the literary world with his medieval forgeries.
The text is Psalm 100, also known as the Jubilate Deo, in the translation by Martin Luther. The rather short psalm calls one to rejoice in the Lord, serve him with gladness, come before his countenance with joy, realize that he made us, and go enter his gates, because he is friendly (). Old Hundredth, Psalm 100, the beginning of a traditional tune in a 1628 print The call to rejoice leads to music that is especially suitable for festive occasions. The psalm has been set to music many times, mostly for liturgical use, for example by Palestrina (1575) and Lully, who composed a motet, LWV77/16, in honor of the marriage of Louis XIV and peace with Spain in 1660.
After a break of two and a half months Jet Setting returned in the Group One Matron Stakes over one mile at Leopardstown on 10 September. She was in contention for most of the way but weakened towards the finish and came home sixth of the eight runners behind Alice Springs. On 2 October the filly was dropped in class for the Group Three Concorde Stakes at Tipperary Racecourse in which she was matched against male opposition for the first time in 2016. Racing on her favoured soft-to-heavy ground she started the 7/4 favourite ahead of nine opponents including The Happy Prince (Renaissance Stakes), Flight Risk (Gladness Stakes), Sruthan (winner of the race in 2013) and Creggs Pipes (Cairn Rouge Stakes).
On her first run as a four-year-old La Collina was beaten only half a length when finishing third to the colts Custom Cut and Nephrite in the Group 3 Gladness Stakes at the Curragh on 7 April. Following this race Chris Hayes took over from McDonogh as her regular jockey. In May La Collina contested two Group 3 races, taking second place in both the Blue Wind Stakes at Naas and the Abu Dhabi Stakes at the Curragh. In the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh in June she finished sixth of nine runners behind the British-trained Ambivalent and her losing run extended to 11 in the following month when she came home a distant sixth (beaten more than 20 lengths) to Scintillula in the Meld Stakes on heavy ground at Leopardstown.
After an absence of almost a year Dick Whittington returned in April 2016 and came home sixth behind Onenightidreamed in the Gladness Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh. In May he ran seventh to Magical Memory in the Duke of York Stakes but then produced a much better effort ten days later when he finished a close third behind Mobsta and Flight Risk in the Greenlands Stakes. On 16 June, with Seamie Heffernan in the saddle, the colt contested the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes over seven furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse and started the 7/4 second favourite behind the eight-year-old gelding Kelinni (winner of the Lexus Stakes in Australia). Heffernan tracked the clear leader Al Mohalhal before sending his mount into the lead a furlong out.
The race attracted a field of eleven runners, four trained in the United Kingdom, five in France, one in Ireland and one in Germany. The favourite was the Cecil Boyd-Rochfort-trained Alcide, a four-year-old colt owned by Sir Humphrey de Trafford who had been a hot favourite for the previous year’s Epsom Derby, but could not run in that race because he was most likely ‘got at’ and had received a savage blow in his box, which had broken one of his ribs. The Irish challenger was Gladness. France was represented by Balbo, Al Mabsoot, Chief (owned by Prince Aly Khan), Ascot Gold Cup-winner Wallaby II (who in that race had beaten Alcide by a 'short head' into 2nd place 30 days ago) and Amourrou.
They released their first album, Dance with Gladness, in 1982, featuring 15 tracks comprising two full traditional belly dance routines, played on traditional instruments including saz, oud, nai, mizmar, and hand drums. This album, originally available only on tape and LP, was re-released in January 2012 on CD. The group followed up in 1983 with Food of Love, which again offered music for two full belly dance routines, and featured traditional Egyptian, Armenian, and Persian songs played on traditional instruments. The band's next album, Beyond the Tenth, was released in 1989, and included popular Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Armenian and Israeli songs sung in their native tongues, backed by traditional saz, oud, clarinet, zurna, and hand drums. Sales of this album were charted as far away as New Zealand.
On his first appearance as a three-year-old contested the Craven Stakes (a major trial for the 2000 Guineas) on firm going at Newmarket Racecourse in April and finished fifth behind My Drifter. He sustained a shoulder injury in the race and was never again asked to run on firm ground. His participation in the 2000 Guineas on 5 May was in doubt until overnight rain softened the track but he produced a very good effort to finish third of the eighteen runners behind Mon Fils and Noble Decree with Thatch in fourth place. In the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh two weeks later Sharp Edge was ridden by Joe Mercer, and started 5/2 joint-favourite alongside Dapper, the Vincent O'Brien-trained winner of both the Tetrarch Stakes and the Gladness Stakes.
In Baháʼí belief, souls in the afterlife will continue to retain their individuality and consciousness and will be able to recognize and communicate spiritually with other souls whom they have made deep profound friendships with, such as their spouses. The Baháʼí scriptures also state there are distinctions between souls in the afterlife, and that souls will recognize the worth of their own deeds and understand the consequences of their actions. It is explained that those souls that have turned toward God will experience gladness, while those who have lived in error will become aware of the opportunities they have lost. Also, in the Baháʼí view, souls will be able to recognize the accomplishments of the souls that have reached the same level as themselves, but not those that have achieved a rank higher than them.
There are also the many festivals celebrated by indigenous peoples of the Americas tied to the harvest of ripe foods gathered in the wild, the Chinese Mid-Autumn or Moon festival, and many others. The predominant mood of these autumnal celebrations is a gladness for the fruits of the earth mixed with a certain melancholy linked to the imminent arrival of harsh weather. This view is presented in English poet John Keats' poem To Autumn, where he describes the season as a time of bounteous fecundity, a time of 'mellow fruitfulness'. In North America, while most foods are harvested during the autumn, foods particularly associated with the season include pumpkins (which are integral parts of both Thanksgiving and Halloween) and apples, which are used to make the seasonal beverage apple cider.
The tone between Paris and Berlin worsened even further after Bismarck published the humiliating Ems Telegram on 13 July 1870. Six days later, the government of Napoleon III declared war on Prussia and the states of the German Confederation offered support to Prussia, which then appeared as the victim of French imperialism. It was in this difficult context that Sophie was christened the following month, though all the men present were in uniform, as France had declared war on Prussia. Sophie's mother described the event to Queen Victoria: "The Christening went off well, but was sad and serious; anxious faces and tearful eyes, and a gloom and foreshadowing of all the misery in store spread a cloud over the ceremony, which should have been one of gladness and thanksgiving".
In some instances a particular text and tune have an almost exclusive partnership with each other, such as Reginald Heber's text "Holy, Holy, Holy!" and John Bacchus Dykes's tune Nicaea. In other instances a text may be used with a variety of tunes, such as "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" sung to any of Lyngham, Oxford New, Arden, Lydia, Richmond, Azmon, or University. In yet other instances a tune may partner several texts, such as Dix for "As with Gladness Men of Old", "Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies", "God of Mercy, God of Grace", "Lord, to You Immortal Praise", and "For the Beauty of the Earth". By contrast, in Germany and Scandinavia, tune names were not typically used even when a hymn tune was used for more than one text.
In his Chronicles Salimbene wrote that Frederick bade "foster-mothers and nurses to suckle and bathe and wash the children, but in no ways to prattle or speak with them; for he would have learnt whether they would speak the Hebrew language (which had been the first), or Greek, or Latin, or Arabic, or perchance the tongue of their parents of whom they had been born. But he laboured in vain, for the children could not live without clappings of the hands, and gestures, and gladness of countenance, and blandishments". Frederick was also interested in the stars, and his court was host to many astrologers and astronomers, including Michael Scot and Guido Bonatti.Little, Kirk, citing: He often sent letters to the leading scholars of the time (not only in Europe) asking for solutions to questions of science, mathematics and physics.
Among the principal themes are: the revelation of Christ to all nations, Jesus' baptism in the River Jordan, and Christ as the light of the world. The colours of the season are white (a colour associated with the festivals of Christ and suggesting gladness, joy and light for the day of Epiphany), used the first week after the Epiphany when the Baptism of our Lord is celebrated, and the last week of the season of Epiphany when the Transfiguration of our Lord is celebrated; and green, reminiscent of living plants and suggests spiritual growth. Green is used in the season of Epiphany beginning with the second week after the Epiphany until the week before the Transfiguration of our Lord is celebrated.Evangelical Lutheran Church in America The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America used the terms "Time after Epiphany" to describe this period.
The young James wrote some scathing reviews of Trollope's novels (The Belton Estate, for instance, he called "a stupid book, without a single thought or idea in it ... a sort of mental pabulum"). He also made it clear that he disliked Trollope's narrative method; Trollope's cheerful interpolations into his novels about how his storylines could take any twist their author wanted did not appeal to James's sense of artistic integrity. However, James thoroughly appreciated Trollope's attention to realistic detail, as he wrote in an essay shortly after the novelist's death: > His [Trollope's] great, his inestimable merit was a complete appreciation of > the usual. ... [H]e felt all daily and immediate things as well as saw them; > felt them in a simple, direct, salubrious way, with their sadness, their > gladness, their charm, their comicality, all their obvious and measurable > meanings.
At the General Executive Committee Meeting of 1910, she was elected to the literature committee, then in charge of miscellaneous literature for the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In her home, in 1888, the young woman's missionary society was organized, and here, 20 years later, the Standard Bearer organization was formed. She was one of the widely known writers of the state, the author of many religious books, Land of the Rising Sun, 1877; Sister Ridenour’s Sacrifice, 1883; Polly Button’s New Year (“Worth While” series), 1892; Entertainments (with Elizabeth Champney), 1879; Christmas Cheer in All Lands, 1905; Mission Ships, 1904; Easter Gladness, 1906; The Child’s Own Book, 1910; and The Wonderful Story of Jesus, 1911. She was a contributor to many church papers and magazines, including Youth’s Companion, Philadelphia Press, Christian Union (Outlook), New York Independent, and Methodist Review.
The second part of verse 1 in the BCP translation, set to a chanting tune in James Green's 1738 Samuel Rolles Driver's Parallel Psalter has the Prayer Book translation of psalm 100 on a verso page. It is identical to the Jubilate Deo, sans Gloria, from the Book of Common Prayer, intentionally retaining the use of "O" for the vocative amongst other things: # O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands : serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. # Be ye sure that the Lord he is God : it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. # O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise : be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name.
On July 3, 2004, Rozanski was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore and Titular Bishop of Walla Walla by Pope John Paul II. He received his episcopal consecration on the following August 24 from William Cardinal Keeler, with Bishops William Newman and W. Francis Malooly serving as co-consecrators. He selected as his episcopal motto: "Serve The Lord With Gladness." As an auxiliary bishop, Rozanski also served as Vicar for Hispanic Ministries and as Seton Vicar, in which position he ministered to the parishes in Anne Arundel, Howard, Carroll, Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) announced on April 18, 2011, that he would succeed Edward U. Kmiec, the Bishop of Buffalo, New York, as Roman Catholic Co-Chairman of the Polish National Catholic-Roman Catholic dialogue, due to Bishop Kmiec's impending retirement.
The mitzvah of giving mishloach manot is derived from the Book of Esther, which enjoins the Jewish people to observe the days of Purim "as days of feasting and gladness, and sending portions of food to one another, and gifts to the poor" (9:22). This verse refers to three different mitzvot: eating a Purim meal, the sending of two different, ready-to-eat foods and/or drinks to one friend (known by the Hebrew term, mishloach manot), and the distribution of two charitable donations (either money or food) to two poor people. In actual practice, many individuals fulfill the first mitzvah themselves (by sending food gifts to friends, neighbors, relatives, etc.), and the second mitzvah by contributing to charitable organisations which distribute money or food to the poor on Purim day. Poor people are also required to give mishloach manot.
Jocelin embraced the cult without hesitation. Under the year of Jocelin's accession, it was reported in the Chronicle of Melrose that: > The tomb of our pious father, sir Waltheof, the second abbot of Melrose, was > opened by Enguerrand, of good memory, the bishop of Glasgow, and by four > abbots called in for this purpose; and his body was found entire, and his > vestments intact, in the twelfth year from his death, on the eleventh day > before the Kalends of June [22 May]. And after the holy celebration of mass, > the same bishop, and the abbots whose number we have mentioned above, placed > over the remains of his most holy body a new stone of polished marble. And > there was great gladness; those who were present exclaiming together, and > saying that truly this was a man of God ...Chronicle of Melrose, s.a.

Harwood's musical works sit within the 'English' tradition established by Wesley, Stainer, Parry and Stanford. He is best known today for his liturgical works, particularly his anthem O How Glorious is the Kingdom (1898) and his Service in A flat (1892), which still remain popular with English choirs. He wrote numerous hymn tunes, several of which became well-known including Luckington ("Let All the World in Every Corner Sing"), Thornbury ("O Jesus I Have Promised" and "Thy hand, O God, has Guided"), and St Audrey ("Sing ye Faithful, Sing with Gladness"). He produced a number of choral works, often for church festivals, including Inclina Domine (Gloucester Festival 1898); As by the Streams of Babylon (Oxford Bach Choir 1907); Jesus, Thy Boundless Love (St Paul's Cathedral 1909); Song on May Morning (Leeds Festival 1913); Love Incarnate (Gloucester Festival 1925); Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem (Gloucester Festival 1928); and Sacrifice Triumphant (1939).
"Nun liebe Seel, nun ist es Zeit" is a German Epiphany hymn by Georg Weissel, first printed in 1642. Two very familiar Christmas carols associated with Epiphany are "As with gladness, men of old", written by William Chatterton Dix in 1860 as a response to the many legends which had grown up surrounding the Magi, and "We Three Kings of Orient Are", written by the Reverend John Henry Hopkins Jr., then an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church,Biography at the Cyber Hymnal instrumental in organizing an elaborate holiday pageant (which featured this hymn) for the students of the General Theological Seminary in New York City in 1857 while serving as the seminary's music director. Another popular hymn, less known culturally as a carol, is "Songs of thankfulness and praise", with words written by Christopher Wordsworth and commonly sung to the tune "St. Edmund" by Charles Steggall.
In 2019 Romanised was ridden in all six of his races by Billy Lee. He began his third campaign by finishing fifth to Imaging in the Gladness Stakes over seven furlongs at Naas on 13 April beaten less than two lengths by the winner. The colt was then sent to England for the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury Racecourse on 18 May and came home fourth of the fourteen runners behind Mustashry, Laurens and Accidental Agent. In the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on 18 June Romanised started a 25/1 outsider but belied his odds as he overcame repeated problems in attempting to obtain a clear run to finish a close fourth behind Lord Glitters, Beat The Bank and One Master. On 20 July Romanised was dropped back in distance and class for the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh and started the 2/1 second favourite behind the British-trained Hey Gaman (Prix du Palais-Royal).
892; "Faith Healing in America," The Times, May 26, 1885. In 1907 Mark Twain described the appeal of the new religion: She has delivered to them a religion which has revolutionized their lives, banished the glooms that shadowed them, and filled them and flooded them with sunshine and gladness and peace; a religion which has no hell; a religion whose heaven is not put off to another time, with a break and a gulf between, but begins here and now, and melts into eternity as fancies of the waking day melt into the dreams of sleep. They believe it is a Christianity that is in the New Testament; that it has always been there, that in the drift of ages it was lost through disuse and neglect, and that this benefactor has found it and given it back to men, turning the night of life into day, its terrors into myths, its lamentations into songs of emancipation and rejoicing.Mark Twain, Christian Science, p.
As for lights in the churches, he adds that in all the churches of the East, whenever the gospel is to be read, lights are lit, though the sun be rising (jam sole rutilante), not in order to disperse the darkness, but as a visible sign of gladness (ad signum ketitiae demonstrandum). Taken in connection with a statement which almost immediately precedes this Cereos autem non clara luce accendimus, sicut frustra calumniaris: sed ut noctis tenebras hoc solatio temperemus , this seems to point to the fact that the ritual use of lights in the church services, so far as already established, arose from the same conservative habit as determined the development of liturgical vestments, i.e. the lights which had been necessary at the nocturnal meetings were retained, after the hours of service had been altered, and invested with a symbolical meaning. Already they were used at most of the conspicuous functions of the Church.
Before Late Romantic orchestral trends of length and scope separated the trajectory of lighter orchestral works from the Western Classical canon, classical composers such as Mozart and Haydn won as much fame for writing lighter pieces such as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik as for their symphonies and operas. Later examples of early European light music include the operettas of composers such as Franz von Suppé or Sir Arthur Sullivan; the Continental salon and parlour music genres; and the waltzes and marches of Johann Strauss II and his family.H. E. Jacob, Johann Strauss - Father and Son - A Century of Light Music, 1977, The Straussian waltz became a common light music composition (note for example Charles Ancliffe's "Nights of Gladness" or Felix Godin's "Valse Septembre"). These influenced the foundation of a "lighter" tradition of classical music in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the UK, the light- music genre has its origin in the seaside and theatrical orchestras that flourished in Britain during the 19th and early 20th century.
Making the game up on the spot, Pollyanna's father taught her to look at the good side of things—in this case, to be glad about the crutches because she did not need to use them. With this philosophy, and her own sunny personality and sincere, sympathetic soul, Pollyanna brings so much gladness to her aunt's dispirited New England town that she transforms it into a pleasant place to live. The Glad Game shields her from her aunt's stern attitude: when Aunt Polly puts her in a stuffy attic room without carpets or pictures, she exults at the beautiful view from the high window; when she tries to "punish" her niece for being late to dinner by sentencing her to a meal of bread and milk in the kitchen with the servant Nancy, Pollyanna thanks her rapturously because she likes bread and milk, and she likes Nancy. Soon Pollyanna teaches some of Beldingsville's most troubled inhabitants to "play the game" as well, from a querulous invalid named Mrs.
Under the influence of the Silesian School and of Simon Dach of Königsberg, he produced a series of poems and hymns, collected and edited by himself in two volumes (Guben, 1674), entitled: Teutsche Gedichte, enthaltend geistliches Zion samt Vaterunserharfe nebst irdischem Helicon oder Lob-, Lieb-, Leidgedichte, etc.. His secular poems are forgotten; about forty of his religious songs, hymns, and psalms have been kept in the hymals of the German Protestant Church. Some of these are the hymn for Communion "" ("Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness"), which Bach used as the base for his chorale cantata Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele, BWV 180, the Advent hymn Komm, Heidenheiland, Lösegeld (Come, Ransom of our captive race, a translation into German of Veni redemptor gentium), and a hymn to Jesus, "Jesu, meine Freude" (Jesus, my joy), which was the base for Bach's funeral motet Jesu, meine Freude, BWV 227. Bach also used single stanzas in his cantatas. The music for his hymns by the Guben organist Christoph Peter appeared first in the Andachtscymbeln, the oldest Guben hymn book, in 1648.

As Bishop, he produced pamphlets including This Decade is Forever for the Decade of Evangelisation, and Serve the Lord with Gladness (his own personal motto) as a reflection of his years in the priesthood. Bishop Harris acted very much in the ecumenical spirit engendered by Vatican II. While in Liverpool there were instances of his approval of Catholic priests assisting at the baptism of children of mixed confessional identity in Anglican churches with the baptism then registered of parish churches of both confessions. He consecrated Middlesbrough's Cathedral in 1998 which incorporated many of his suggestions to the architect on the church design. In 1980 he promoted a free monthly diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Voice, which, as of 2009, continues to be published and distributed. Bishop Harris served as liaison Bishop between the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales and the Prison Department at the Home Office, was Episcopal Moderator to the Federation Internationale des Associations Medicales Catholiques (1967 to 1976), and was President of the Commission for Social Welfare (1972 to 1984).
Roman Catholic Gaudete Sunday Mass in which the priest is wearing the customary rose vestments The season of Advent originated as a fast of 40 days in preparation for Christmas, commencing on the day after the feast of Saint Martin (11 November), whence it was often called Saint Martin's Lent, a name by which it was known as early as the fifth century. In the ninth century, the duration of Advent was reduced to four weeks (a period starting four Sundays before Christmas), and Advent preserved most of the characteristics of a penitential season, which made it a kind of counterpart to Lent. Gaudete Sunday is a counterpart to Laetare Sunday, and provides a similar break about midway through a season which is otherwise of a penitential character, and signifies the nearness of the Lord's coming. The spirit of the liturgy throughout Advent is one of expectation and preparation for the feast of Christmas as well as for the second coming of Christ, and the penitential exercises suitable to that spirit are thus on Gaudete Sunday suspended, as it were, for a while, in order to symbolize that joy and gladness in the promised Redemption.
" An experiment allegedly carried out by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century saw young infants raised without human interaction in an attempt to determine if there was a natural language that they might demonstrate once their voices matured. It is claimed he was seeking to discover what language would have been imparted into Adam and Eve by God. The experiments were recorded by the monk Salimbene di Adam in his Chronicles, who was generally extremely negative about Fredrick II (portraying his calamaties as parallel to the Biblical plagues in The Twelve Calamities of Emperor Frederick II) and wrote that Frederick encouraged "foster-mothers and nurses to suckle and bathe and wash the children, but in no ways to prattle or speak with them; for he would have learnt whether they would speak the Hebrew language (which he took to have been the first), or Greek, or Latin, or Arabic, or perchance the tongue of their parents of whom they had been born. But he laboured in vain, for the children could not live without clappings of the hands, and gestures, and gladness of countenance, and blandishments.
Later on the proposal was formulated as a political plan widely accepted by all Arab states as well as the Arab League. As part of this plan all Arab states would normalize their relations with Israel and bring to an end to the Arab–Israeli conflict in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip and West Bank (including East Jerusalem). In addition, the plan required Israel to allow the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and, what the plan describes as a "just solution" for the Palestinian refugees in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 194. Israel rejected the wording of the initiative, but official spokespersons expressed gladness about an Arab initiative for peace and Israel's normalization in the region. Following a period of relative restraint on the part of Israel, after a lethal suicide attack in the Park Hotel in Netanya which happened on March 27, 2002, in which 30 Jews were murdered, Sharon ordered Operation Defensive Shield, a large-scale military operation carried out by the Israel Defense Forces between March 29 until May 10, 2002 in Palestinian cities in the West Bank.
