Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams play director Bob Fosse and star Gwen Verdon, whose tumultuous relationship and partnership provides another delicious window into what amounts to an FX niche chronicling the big personalities of old Hollywood.

Mr. Vagi, 38, grew up dancing and choreographing — he studied ballet and was also influenced by Bob Fosse — but as he grew older, he immersed himself in the artistry and history of circus and cabaret theater.
The resolution of the fourth episode, for instance, rankles with its too-pat explanations for why someone like Bob Fosse might not commit suicide, while continuing to smoke and drink and snort their way to death.
Her two guest appearances on her mother's 1963-64 variety series, and her own Emmy Award-winning TV concert, "Liza With a Z," a 1972 NBC special directed by Bob Fosse, are standout moments in television history.
While Fosse's iconic style of dance and trademark movements still permeate Broadway today, the real star of this show is Michelle Williams as Gwen Verdon, who married Fosse and collaborated with him on his most famous projects.
Some names that stick out of the bunch include Amy Adams for HBO's "Sharp Objects," Benicio del Toro for Showtime's "Escape At Dannemora," Kumail Nanjiani for CBS' "The Twilight Zone," and Michelle Williams for FX's "Fosse/Verdon."
For the unenlightened, Fosse was the world's most celebrated show choreographer, adored, in particular, for his distinctive movements: "jazz hands," slouched shoulders, minutely pivoting pelvises, a style that was at once erotic and awkward, liberated and possessed.
Fosse helped create Verdon as a leading lady when he choreographed her "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets" dance as the devil's temptress seducing an older baseball player in Washington to sell his soul to regain his youth.
Yeah that would be less good, I just put ... And I don't do this, this is my personal life, I'll compliment FX, I just recorded the first two episodes of Verdon/Fosse, do I have it right?
If you've seen dancers flare their fingers in the flexed position often mockingly called "jazz hands," then you've seen Fosse, especially if those dancers were also sitting into one hip and hiding their eyes beneath a hat.
It took place in the Barclays Center, against a gigantic set that was part stairway to heaven, part Roman Colosseum, part "Chicago" (the Bob Fosse version) and part "Laugh-In," with a reflecting pool in the middle.
Não, ele não fez nenhum depósito suspeito, nem encontraram nenhum e-mail no nome dele, mas ao que parece foi ele que pediu, pra uma centena de deputados brasileiros, pra que a presidenta fosse retirada do cargo.
It's by far the most worshipful episode of Fosse so far, and it's also an episode where he is more or less well-behaved (if you can call cheating on his girlfriend with his estranged wife "well-behaved").
In molti hanno affermato che l'elevato numero di contagi in Italia fosse attribuibile alle massicce campagne di test su soggetti asintomatici nel nord, sostenendo che questi servissero solo a generare isteria e a macchiare l'immagine del Paese all'estero.

And Fosse/Verdon is as good as anything I've ever seen at depicting the cost of sharing that brain, of having a relationship you should leave, except it's the only place you can get this one particular thing.
Those two people, of course, are Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams), who are technically still married when this episode takes place, over a long rainy weekend in 1973 in a beach house with their closest friends.
A pioneer of theatrical jazz onstage and on the screen — and a performance coach to Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe — he influenced the likes of Jerome Robbins, Alvin Ailey and Bob Fosse, yet we don't hear about him much.
Williams, who won her first Emmy this year for lead actress in a limited series for "Fosse/Verdon," has become a red carpet icon in the last two decades – opting for daring colors and prints that always stand out.
The show is most engaging in musical numbers that summon the impact of Rimbaud on others, which often feature lively, stylized choreography by Sam Pinkleton that suggests how the Ramones might have danced if Bob Fosse had choreographed them.
After winning the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her role as Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon, the actress Michelle Williams took to the stage to give an impassioned speech about pay equality.
" Moi je dois leur dire, "je veux qu'on évacue la fosse," et c'est eux qui me donnent l'autorisation et c'est eux qui me disent : "Tu peux le faire, c'est à peu près sécurisé, en tous cas on te couvre.

Technically, the decades-spanning cable drama is about the tumultuous marriage and professional creative partnership of Broadway greats Bob Fosse (played by Oscar winner Sam Rockwell), who also directed Cabaret, and wife Gwen Verdon (four-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams).
Ahead, Richardson tells Refinery29 about her own experience as a young actress, how Louise Brooks may or may not have inspired her to propose to fiance Brett Dier (Jane the Virgin), and why she's so bummed she's not in Fosse/Verdon.
But the decision to give Verdon equal billing in the production was a wise one (the series was originally adapted from "Fosse", a biography written in 2013, but the producers realised that this would result in a narrow, uneven story).
Ghosts of Times Square (Saturday) Former figures of New York theater — like the performance polymath George M. Cohan, Bob Fosse and a dancer with the Ziegfeld Follies — are the highlights of this walking tour that doubles as a Broadway history lesson.
The fosse that day, after weeks of rain, brimmed and foamed and hid the Whin Sill and its usual zagged path in a pounding-down of polar-bear spume, ropy and rippling but somehow standing still through sheer insistence, sheer abundance.
In April, FX will have its new prestige miniseries about Bob Fosse, CBS All Access brings The Twilight Zone back with new host Jordan Peele, and HBO brings back a little show you might have heard of called Game of Thrones.

Both Miranda and Kail have worked previously with Disney; Miranda as a writer, on "Moana," and performer, in "Mary Poppins Returns," and Kail as a director, of "Fosse/Verdon," which was made by FX, a channel now owned by Disney.
Though "The Godfather" walked away with best picture, best actor, and best screenplay at the 45th Academy Awards, it was Bob Fosse directing "Cabaret" that upset the movie's evening as he took the best directing prize from Francis Ford Coppola.
Williams, who took home the award for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for her work in "Fosse/Verdon," first thanked FX and Fox 21 TV studios for paying her the same as co-star Sam Rockwell.
It's hard, but the actors really embraced their characters — there was Noah Galvin [George], where he wears his black turtleneck as Bob Fosse, I'm-a-Broadway-director thing, Austin Crute being so outrageous playing Alan and embracing a queer sensibility.

The two are working on whatever their next series together will be, but Fields simultaneously stepped in to guide another FX project about a troubled marriage where one of the participants (in this case, Bob Fosse) gets up to incredibly horrible things.
Co-directed and choreographed by Ann Reinking, Fosse's romantic and creative partner after Verdon (and her replacement as Roxie in the Broadway revival), the show contributed to the legend of Fosse as a solo genius, the singular visionary of the toe flick.
It is clear that the director, Thomas Kail, who also directed the Broadway musical Hamilton (Hamilton's creator and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is an executive producer on Fosse/Verdon), wanted to tell both sides of the story—the tortured maestro, his beleaguered muse.
"Chernobyl" (HBO) — WILL WIN"Escape at Dannemora" (Showtime)"Fosse/Verdon" (FX)"Sharp Objects" (HBO)"When They See Us" (Netflix) — SHOULD WINHBO's "Chernobyl" has been flooded with nonstop praise since the beginning of summer, and is among fans top-rated shows of all time.
In the pilot, she flies to Munich, where Fosse is filming "Cabaret," then dresses Liza Minnelli in her own wardrobe; she even takes a flight back to New York to procure a gorilla head, to make sure that the infamous "Meeskite" number works.
But "Fosse/Verdon," despite its shuffled chronology, its stylized countdown captions ("267 Days Since Verdon's 1st Tony Award"), and some "All That Jazz"-esque surreal flashes meant to suggest inner conflicts, is a frustratingly linear project, flattening kinky situations into straight lines.
In addition to starring in Quentin Tarantino's film earlier this summer, the young star earned her first Emmy nomination for her role in the FX show Fosse/Verdon following her breakout role as Justin Theroux's daughter in HBO's three-season hit The Leftovers.
Onstage at the 77th Annual Golden Globes to receive the award for Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture for TV for her performance as Gwen Verdon in FX's Fosse/Verdon, Williams used her time to celebrate a woman's right to choose.
For Jacobs, that means anything "from late nights binge-streaming ... inspiration draws from the thoughtful and accurately executed set design of 'Fosse/Verdon,'" and what he called the "boundary-pushing ... 'Euphoria,' so accurately portraying what it means to be a young person today."
The big idea of Fosse/Verdon, the thing that's supposed to keep it from becoming just another antihero show, is that it elevates the prominence of Gwen Verdon, showing just how much of a creative constant she was in Bob Fosse's life.
It's hard to overstate what an impact the one-two-three punch of Barefoot, Odd Couple, and the Cy Coleman/Bob Fosse musical Sweet Charity had in the mid-'60s in terms of establishing Neil Simon as the reigning king of Broadway.
" Perhaps this year's fiercest race resides in the limited-series category, where the contenders include a premium-TV feast that consists of HBO's "Chernobyl," Netflix's Central Park Five miniseries "When They See Us," Showtime's prison drama "Escape From Dannemora," and FX's showbiz drama "Fosse/Verdon.
Anglophone readers can encounter fiction by Per Petterson, Linn Ullmann, Dag Solstad (three of his novels, jewels from a hoard of nearly thirty books, have been translated into English; more are promised), Roy Jacobsen, Tor Ulven, Jon Fosse, and Carl Frode Tiller, among others.
But while the precision and insistence on glamour in synchronized swimming have much in common with the Rockettes or the work of a choreographer like Bob Fosse, with its razor-sharp positions, synchro is neither old-fashioned nor just full of girls playing dress up.
Told in a non-linear structure, Fosse/Verdon considers both the professional and personal sides of the esteemed entertainment power couple — examining how we attribute credit to men and women differently as well as what it means to separate the artist from their work.
The acclaimed HBO show took home the win for outstanding limited series, triumphing over Showtime's Escape at Dannemora, FX's Fosse/Verdon, HBO's Sharp Objects and Netflix's When They See Us. Chernobyl came into the night with the most nominations of the bunch, at 19.

Profound questions of identity and silly ones of stardom mix in Bubbly's life, just as they did in the life of Ms. Childs, who was herself a dancer, having performed in several Bob Fosse shows, including "Chicago" and "Sweet Charity," on tour and on Broadway.
Based on Sam Wasson's biography of Fosse, and told over a period of five decades, it charts their ability to bring out the best — and worst — in each other, paying particular attention to Fosse's affairs and Verdon's decision to put his career before hers.

Directed by Bohemian Rhapsody veteran Dexter Fletcher and produced by John's husband David Furnish, the "based on a true fantasy" film blends flamboyant Bob Fosse-meets-Las Vegas-meets-Busby Berkeley musical numbers with gritty drama, evoking both the public and private sides of rock's greatest showman.
Where the previous few episodes were mostly just about either Bob or Gwen, this one was so much more focused on Bob and Gwen, on the unit of Fosse/Verdon that so dominated Broadway, but also became codependent and all but impossible to understand from the outside.
In addition to starring in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood earlier this summer, she earned her first Emmy nomination for her role in the FX show Fosse/Verdon following her breakout role as Justin Theroux's daughter in HBO's three-season hit The Leftovers.
For the rest of this semester, I'll be teaching my seminar "The History of the Broadway Musical" online, and I'm relieved that we did our Fosse unit before this transition; learning the choreography for "All That Jazz" would have been more challenging on Zoom than in person.
Wasson, who has written books about Bob Fosse and the movie version of "Breakfast at Tiffany's," delivers a vivid narrative, weaving together portraits of four seriously flawed men — Towne, Polanski, Evans and Nicholson — who came together just once to create a near-perfect work of art.
While searching for a project for his wife and muse, that juggernaut of charm Gwen Verdon (Foster is Verdon's only artistic heir), Fosse hit on "Nights of Cabiria," Federico Fellini's 1957 movie about a streetwalker named Cabiria—played by his wife, the Italian actress Giulietta Masina.
And Michelle Williams, a winner for her portrayal of Gwen Verdon in "Fosse/Verdon," made a compelling speech about the gender wage gap in Hollywood, highlighting the fact that women of color in the industry make 52 cents to the dollar as compared with white men.

This week, The Times Magazine took a deep dive into the Murdoch family, the actor Sam Rockwell discusses shifting from portraying George W. Bush to the choreographer Bob Fosse, and we break down "Bury a Friend" by Billie Eilish, above, in our latest installment of Diary of a Song.
Her residency, supported by Danspace Project, continues her research into dance styles of the past, focusing on the choreography of Bob Fosse and taking inspiration from modern dance pioneers like Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey, adding yet another vibrating layer of activity in the bustling theater of the city.
And as such, I devoured and adored the five installments I've seen so far of FX's new Fosse/Verdon, a glossy eight-episode miniseries about a Great Man Who Is Also A Terrible Human, the Underappreciated Woman Who Loves Him, and the genuinely fantastic stuff they made together.
The two were true creative partners: Although Fosse came up with the ideas for his jerky, hyper-specific movements ("Bob choreographs down to the second joint of your little finger," Verdon once said), Verdon's innate playfulness and deep well of technical knowledge helped Fosse's steps come alive on the stage.
It's the sort of movie that would be harder to make now, during a period of reckoning with the kind of man that Fosse undeniably was: a sexually predatory "bad boy," whose worst behavior was part of a system that exploited the female artists it relied upon, then discarded them.
Fortunately, Mr. Haight was kind enough to turn up the heat right out of the box and make us work it off with some Fosse choreography from "All That JAZZ" in "Chicago": 13A: ALEE is one of those words that can be considered crosswordese, unless, of course, you are a sailor.
Seeing Fosse's choreographic interpretation of sophistication and boredom in the original production—and in the 1969 Fosse-directed film version—was like coming across a familiar theme in a new language: no one had created dances like that before, or cast dancers who were not all conventionally svelte or pretty.
In series ranging from "Fosse/Verdon," FX's Broadway-musical-antihero show, to Gen Z soaps like Freeform's "Good Trouble" and "The Bold Type," as well as on network sitcoms like "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and cable dramedies like "Barry," creators are visibly adjusting to, and at times struggling with, the changing landscape.

That may be inherent in the very genre of the biopic, and wrestle though it might, Fosse/Verdon can never quite escape its deteriorating orbit, plunging closer and closer to the black hole that is its central subject, because it knows, deep down, how essential he is to American art.
The story of a dance hall girl making her way in the world through a string of relationships, Sweet Charity is indelibly a Fosse musical — and the film is one of his slickest achievements as a director and choreographer, though at the time it was a major box office flop.
Fosse changed movies and Broadway forever, inventing an original American dance idiom: syncopated, tiny, isolated movements with shades of burlesque and showbiz with a capital S. "He added a dark sparkle, which is a hard thing to do in dance, to add negative feelings to something exuberant and vital," Mr. Wasson told me.
Now as she creates a distinct artistic lane as a musician-dancer, Ms. Letissier has taken ownership of her body in both its sadness and its sexuality — especially in the final dance to the title track, with the elegant American singer-songwriter Caroline Polachek, a Bob Fosse dancer if ever there was one.
The pregnant actress stood in front of live TV cameras and used her Golden Globes acceptance speech for her performance in Fosse/Verdon to explain how having an abortion helped her decide when and with whom to have children and urged women to use their voting power to help reshape our government.
