In 2010, as a reaction to the publication of several research studies examining the impact of microfinance based on randomized, controlled trials, a number of questions were raised in prominent media about whether microfinance has made a quantitative improvement in the lives of borrowers or has had any effect on poverty alleviation on a systemic basis. Women's World Banking, along with fellow microfinance organizations ACCION, FINCA, Grameen Foundation, Opportunity International, and Unitus, released a collective statement in response to the studies, evoking the challenges and complexities of assessing microfinance's impact and the limitations of such studies. Most fincas enjoyed the services of their own GN units posted on the grounds; regional GN commanders routinely were compensated by the finca owners to ensure the continued loyalty of the guardsmen. Suppression of rural dissent was subtle and institutionalized; campesinos generally accepted the status quo because of the implied threat of retaliation from the GN or other military units. One exception to this pattern was Aquino's rebellion. Although it predated the coffee boom, its reverberations were felt throughout Salvadoran society for decades.

It relies on a system of cross-guarantees, where each member of a village bank ensures the loan of every other member. This system gives rise to an atmosphere of social pressure within the village bank, where the cost of social embarrassment motivates bank members to repay their loans in full. The admixture of cross-guarantees and social pressure makes it possible for even the poorest people to receive loans. This method has proven very effective for FINCA, yielding a repayment rate of over 97% in its worldwide network.

The newly formed company was dedicated to agriculture and the making of ice. The finca (property) in which the company was located was called "La Florida", from which the company took its name of "Florida Ice and Farm Company". The brothers used an English name due to the fact that English was their native tongue, as it was for many Caribbean migrants who lived in the Atlantic region of Costa Rica.

Nueve Cerros and other sites in the southern lowlands were among the last to be conquered by the Spaniards. The region continued to be independent until the 1690s, although the Spaniards were interested in the salt source as early as 1620. After the region was conquered, the salt source was converted into a finca that fell under the hands of the municipality of Cobán, Alta Verapaz in the 19th century. The municipality sold rights to salt production well into the 20th century, although once it was connected to the Caribbean and Pacific coasts through a road and railway, sea salt became cheaper and more popular.

The couple resided there and, per the US Consulate records, her husband managed the property's sprawling farmlands and major sugar plantation, often known collectively as "Finca Buena Vista," which were significant agricultural businesses in the Matanzas province. The property was damaged during the Battle of Cárdenas in the Spanish-American War and became the center of the couple's high-profile claims case to the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission.
Sergio visits Finca Vigía, the Cuban home of Ernest Hemingway. While he reflects on Hemingway's attitude to Cuba, Elena is bored by "dead animals and books". The apartment where Sergio lived was filmed in a thirty-fourth floor penthouse of the FOCSA Building Before the film's release, both the director, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, and the main actor, Sergio Corrieri, were concerned that the film wouldn’t be successful.Cineaste 35.2 (Spring 2010): 18-25 The film was largely inexpensive to produce, as it was made without many technological or economic resources, and as a result Alea feared that his vision wouldn’t translate to the screen. Another concern of Alea’s was that Corrieri would seem too young for his part.

As the conversion from football club into a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva (SAD) in the 1990s was ruled as a case of embezzlement ("unlawful appropiation") by justice (although the Supreme Court suspended the two-year prison sentence to Gil Marín and Cerezo as well as the restitution of shares in 2004 on the basis of the extinction of the charges after 5 years), the property over the shares remains controversial. Gil Marín lives in the exclusive La Finca in Pozuelo de Alarcón; as of 2019, his fortune was estimated as the 192nd in Spain.

Don Joaquín was left with the lands at the center of Jícaro extending from the San Pablo river to the Estanzuela river. This area of Mexico being of tropical and torrid climate, has only two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. Don Joaquin kept two homes, one in town next to the railroad which he used for shipping the goods he produced in his ranches such as cotton, maize, charcoal, cheese and livestock. In the dry season the "finca" of "El Jobito" in "Paso 'e la Gloria" (his second abode near the Estanzuela river) was more appropriate for cattle grazing, so he would move the cattle ranching operations to this side of his property, approximately 8 km away, when the grasses in El Jicaro started to dry up.

Cobán later came to be monopolized by German trade in wholesale stores, but they and, to a greater extent, the fincas dispersed throughout almost the entire region of Alta Verapaz. For example, the Finca Ceres anole, a critically endangered species only known from a single unprotected location in Matanzas Province, Cuba, has suffered habitat loss both due to hurricanes and expanding agricultural land. A. amplisquamosus, an endangered species only known from highland forest in the Cusuco National Park region of Honduras, was common in the early 2000s, but by 2006 it had experienced a drastic decline and was only infrequently encountered. A clear explanation for this is lacking, although it may be related to habitat loss due to human development and agriculture. Similarly, A. landestoyi, which only was described in 2016 and has not been rated by the IUCN, is restricted to the Loma Charco Azul reserve in Hispaniola, but it is seriously threatened by continuing illegal habitat destruction by slash-and-burn agriculture, livestock grazing and production of wood charcoal.

Host Fareed Zakaria said that he was "generally wary of celebrities with fashionable causes", but included the segment with Portman because "she really knew her stuff". In the "Voices" segment of the April 29, 2007, episode of the ABC Sunday morning program This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Portman discussed her work with FINCA and how it can benefit women and children in Third World countries. In fall-2007, she visited several university campuses, including Harvard, USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Princeton, New York University, and Columbia, to inspire students with the power of microfinance and to encourage them to join the Village Banking Campaign to help families and communities lift themselves out of poverty. Portman is a supporter of the Democratic Party, and for the 2004 presidential election she campaigned for the Democratic nominee, Senator John Kerry.

The so-called Main Room of Amnesia in 2012 The origins of Amnesia are in April 1970, when the Planells family who had inhabited the house for five generations decided to move into town and sell their finca (country house) to a widow from an aristocratic background. Ibiza, which had become a destination for tourism already in the fifties, was at that time a hive for counterculture and idealists and the building that was to become Amnesia turned into a meeting point with hippie bands playing and other facets of hippie culture taking place. In May 1976, Antonio Escohotado, a Madrid born philosopher who had arrived on the island five years earlier to start a new life, signed a lease with the landlady for use of the premises. The seven unpublished stories included in The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway: The Finca Vigía Edition are "A Train Trip", "The Porter", "Black Ass at the Cross Roads", "Landscape with Figures", "I Guess Everything Reminds You of Something", "Great News from the Mainland", and "The Strange Country". In addition, this volume includes "An African Story", which was derived from the unfinished and heavily edited posthumous novel The Garden of Eden (1986), and two parts of the 1937 novel To Have And Have Not, "One Trip Across" (Cosmopolitan, May 1934) and "The Tradesman's Return" (Esquire, February 1936), in their original magazine versions. The collection is not, despite the title, complete. After Hemingway's suicide, Scribner put out a collection called The Nick Adams Stories (1972) which contains many old stories already collected in The First Forty-Nine as well as some previously unpublished pieces (much of it material that Hemingway clearly rejected).
On April 16, 2016, The Costa Rica Star heeded a request by Canadian news media outlets to look into the assets owned by Brian Pallister, a conservative politician and the Leader of the Opposition of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly at the time. The investigation revealed that Pallister was president of a Finca Deneter Doce, Sociedad Anónima, a holding company for three pieces of real estate in the highly sought-after coastal district of Tamarindo, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste. Pallister had been under fire for spending too much time in Costa Rica when he should have been minding his legislative duties. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Winnipeg Free Press cited the investigative work of The Costa Rica Star even as a spokesperson of the Progressive Conservative Party asserted that Pallister did not conduct business or owned properties in Costa Rica, although public records proved otherwise.

Hotel Ambos Mundos was a family hotel, that attracted writers, actor and actresses and many Americans. This hotel since has gained international note from its most famous long-time tenant: in 1932 a room on the upper (5th) floor became the “first home” in Cuba of writer Ernest Hemingway, who enjoyed the views of Old Havana, and the harbor sea in which he fished frequently in his yacht Pilar. Hemingway rented the room for $1.50 per night ($1.75 for double occupancy) until mid-1939, when he transferred his winter residence from Key West (a U.S. island 90 miles from Cuba) to a house in the hills near Havana, Finca Vigia, which he shared with Martha Gellhorn (they were married in 1940). Hemingway began his novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, a novel of the Spanish Civil War which he had witnessed over the previous several years, in the room in the Ambos Mundos, on March 1, 1939.
The last three were stored in a safe deposit box in Havana, as he focused on the finishing touches for A Moveable Feast. Author Michael Reynolds claims it was during this period that Hemingway slid into depression, from which he was unable to recover.Reynolds (1999), 321 The Finca Vigía became crowded with guests and tourists, as Hemingway, beginning to become unhappy with life there, considered a permanent move to Idaho. In 1959 he bought a home overlooking the Big Wood River, outside Ketchum, and left Cuba—although he apparently remained on easy terms with the Castro government, telling The New York Times he was "delighted" with Castro's overthrow of Batista.Mellow (1992), 494–495Meyers (1985), 516–519 He was in Cuba in November 1959, between returning from Pamplona and traveling west to Idaho, and the following year for his 61st birthday; however, that year he and Mary decided to leave after hearing the news that Castro wanted to nationalize property owned by Americans and other foreign nationals.
