Attributing her eating disorder to patriarchy, misogyny and the prevalence of the 'male gaze' in the field of entertainment, she exhorted other women to go public with their own (patriarchy-induced) eating and mental disorders and called for the destruction of 'ways of thinking' which oppressed women.

Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest was staged by the group and the actors received positive reviews about their "great comic timing".

Maheshwari began his acting career with Dil Dosti Dance for Channel V. He rose to fame by essaying the role of the lead character, Swayam Shekhawat during the four-year run of the show. His chemistry with co-star Vrushika Mehta earned him widespread adulation as they went on to win the third spot as the Hottest Indian TV Jodi by the UK-based newspaper Eastern Eye. According to the reports, "The big surprise was Vrushika Mehta and Shantanu Maheshwari from teen serial 'Dil Dosti Dance', who saw off competition from established names to come third in the list." The pair also earned the Indian Television Academy Awards for Onscreen Couple of the Year in 2014. Maheshwari appeared in Box Cricket League in 2013 and 2014 on Colors TV, as part of the team 'Chandigarh Cubs'.

His books of prose poetry include Powder Town (2008, Pecan Grove Press) and Who's Afraid of Helen of Troy (2016, Etruscan Press). As editor, he has published three highly regarded nonfiction anthologies: Truth in Nonfiction (2008, University of Iowa Press), Essaying the Essay (2013, Welcome Table Press), and, with Patrick Madden as co-editor, After Montaigne: Contemporary Essayists Cover the Essays (2014, University of Georgia Press), which won the Independent Publishers and Foreword Indiefab Book of the Year awards for the essay.
