Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are the world leaders in DRAM chips, key for personal computers, so as demand for those chips decline, semiconductor profits at both firms have slowed in recent quarters, Natixis said.
Market tracker DRAMeXchange predicts an average price decline of 5 percent for DRAM products in the fourth quarter from the previous quarter, steeper than its previous estimate of declines of as much as 3 percent.
The jump is significant "because at this density, the cost of PCM will be significantly less than DRAM and closer to flash," Haris Pozidis, IBM's manager of non-volatile memory research, wrote in a statement.

The Suwon District Court in South Korea accepted Samsung's request to prevent Kim Chi-wook, who headed DRAM design, from joining the Chinese firm and ordered him not to work for the company until November this year.
"Chinese semiconductor companies are estimated to be three years to 10 years behind in technology gap regarding DRAM designing technique," the court wrote, adding that Kim's hiring would help CXMT close the gap and thus hurt Samsung.
"Micron has not been able to execute on the 20 nm mobile DRAM solution and there's not much credibility at this point in terms of whether they're going to execute on the 3D NAND as well," Gill said.
The world's second-largest memory chip maker behind Samsung Electronics Co Ltd warned that DRAM chip supply growth may not keep up with demand and said NAND chip shortages would persist into the first half of the year.
Prior to last year, the price of DRAM actually dropped year after year, by about three percent between 2012 and 93 and by an average annual rate of 33 percent between 1978 and 2012, according to IC Insights.
