"The stock has now reversed the downtrend off those September highs and now we're consolidating between the 50- and 200-day moving average," Johnson said.

If the energy names outperform and break this downtrend, it will also be a bit of a tail wind in the broader indexes…Today, oil and small caps helped power the move.
The dollar slipped against a basket of major currencies after U.S. inflation and unemployment data failed to reverse a downtrend that followed some of the biggest gains on record for China's yuan.

On a weekly chart of Petrobras, Rich Ross of Evercore ISI drew what he saw as a "well-defined downtrend" that shows the semipublic Brazilian oil company falling for the past eight years.

And, judging by crude's track record, a return to its longer-term downtrend seems like an appropriate direction for the commodity, said Anthony Grisanti, longtime trader and founder and president of GRZ Energy.
Bond prices have generally been on a downtrend this year as stronger inflation, a ready-to-move Federal Reserve, and expected economic stimulus from tax cuts raised the prospects of higher interest rates.

"That's the downtrend resistance line off the 1981 highs," Johnson said on CNBC's "Power Lunch, " adding that a reversal above 2.75 percent would usher in shift in asset allocation from fixed income to equities.
"While China is facing a structural downtrend in its growth path, the importance Chinese policymakers attach to growth suggests that any fall in their official growth targets is likely to be gradual," said Moody's.
Both prices and calendar spreads have been in a downtrend since May, with the decline accelerating from the middle of September, but the rally this month has reversed some of the most recent losses.

"The downtrend that began in early May is still intact and will need to be reversed to signal an improvement for BTC," Robert Sluymer, technical strategist at Fundstrat Global Advisors, said in an email.

"We need to break through this downtrend or bloodbath, which is right around the $18 region, in order to get those buy stops and more buyers starting to come into the market," he said.
The company blamed the bigger loss, which contrasted with solid first-quarter earnings at many Saudi petrochemical firms, on reduced margins on refined products and a downtrend in crude oil prices, which hit inventory valuations.
"The yellow metal remains toppish toward $1,290 and is likely to continue to see bears weigh upon rallies over the near-term as the recent downtrend remains intact," MKS PAMP Group said in a note.
While technical analyst Craig Johnson of Piper Jaffray said the XLE is set to go higher after pulling above its downtrend line, Schlossberg is adamant that the bounce from the $26 low is now over.

"Until we get back above this downtrend and back above this 50-day moving average, we do not buy it," Ross said Wednesday on CNBC's "Trading Nation," referring to the importance of the two lines.
But given the series of curbs introduced over the last few days, analysts said they expect more action to come from authorities and for the current pricing downtrend to continue in steel, impacting other commodities.

Front-month Brent futures prices are up by about $22 a barrel since touching a low of $25 on June 22018, which could herald a break in the downtrend that had been in place since late May.
"We expect the downtrend in industrial profit growth to extend into 2019 given weakening domestic demand, the continued credit downcycle and an escalation in the China-US trade conflict," Nomura analysts said in a note to clients.
