The history of Filene's Basement is intertwined with that of the venerable Filene's chain. In 1908, Edward A. Filene, son of the founder of Filene's, William Filene, came up with the idea of selling surplus, overstock, and closeout merchandise in the basement of his father's store. Filene's "Automatic Bargain Basement", as it was originally called, opened in 1909 beneath the Downtown Crossing location. Filene's Basement, and its sister company, Filene's Department Store, were wholly owned by Federated Department Stores of Cincinnati.

One historical problem faced by New Columbia was its status as a low-income community paired with its status, according to the city and the USDA, as a food desert. Planners included a grocery retail space in the development, but its first two occupants, Big City Produce and AJ Java, went out of business. Filling of the external tank with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants started at 10:30 EST on 14 November 2008. After suiting up into the launch and entry suits, the crew left the Operations and Checkout building in the Astrovan and arrived at the launch pad at 16:22 EST. At 4:30 pm, the crew began ingress into the orbiter, and by 17:25 EST, all crewmembers were in their seats and performed communications checks with the ground control personnel. At 18:00 EST, the closeout crew closed and locked Endeavours hatch, and the orbiter's cabin was pressurized in preparation for launch.

The large CBM diameter permitted the use of PMA3 as a pressure- containing closeout during the effort, so that feed-throughs could be removed and replaced without EVA. Another problem arises when the contractor withholds from its subcontractors at a greater percentage than the owner has withheld from them. The owner is to pay retainage to the contractor when substantial completion has occurred, however, in this abusive, over-withholding scenario, the contractor will already have been paid a portion of the subcontractors' funds, meaning that the contractor will have to fund the balance of the payment from its own cash flow. The concept of the bargain basement was not new (Marshall Field's created the first in 1879), but Filene's basement was well lit and decorated ostentatiously. The basement had its own staff which bought surplus, factory clearances, overstock, or closeout merchandise - Filene boasted that he had once sold more than 7,000 pairs of woolen underwear during two July days. Goods were marked down according to an automatic schedule; an item that had been on sale for 12 days was marked down by 25 percent, after 18 days by 50 percent, after 24 days by 75 percent, and after 30 days it was given away.

The Cavs would go on to lose game one however 76-85. In game two of the NBA Finals, Gibson had another solid game adding 15 points and overall being the second leading scorer behind LeBron James at this point while coming off the bench to Larry Hughes. Gibson played great basketball, being a great three point shooter, not turning the ball over and being effective overall.
