"Stieglitz is reading into Brigman's photographs his East Coast brand of modernism, which is very different than her West Coast brand of modernism," said Ms. Wolfe, the curator, pointing to Brigman's "The Cleft in the Rock," a photograph whose prominent gash is reminiscent of O'Keeffe's flower paintings and often compared to vulvas.

In "The Rumor," from 2009, a poem about a "big cat," probably a mountain lion, in the nearby countryside, he describes the remnants of a deer's corpse at the base of a beech tree: Consider thus the tufts and tail piece, hooves cleft from the legs, the legs what's left of them where they dropped con- centric beneath the beech.

Perhaps because that image is still fresh in mind by the time drivers on I-65 reach the water tower in Chilton County, center of the Alabama peach-growing region, it's hard not to see a connection between Birmingham's famous landmark and Chilton County's almost-as-famous water tower, which was built in the shape of an authentically cleft peach.
