According to the writers; in season 5, Bridget would have discovered that Sam was gay and become his confidant. If the affair continued, he had the right to take ownership of the woman.

On learning that Cory is not working at his after-school job at the A&P; because it interferes with football practice, Troy demands that he return to the job, despite Cory's attempts to convince him that he will work weekends instead of during the week. After complaining about his company's racist employment practices, Troy is promoted to driving the garbage truck, becoming the first African-American to do so in Pittsburgh. Bono finds out that Troy is cheating on Rose with Alberta, a woman he sees at Taylor's (a bar) and encourages him to break it off. Troy later finds out that Cory did not return to his job, and so tells the coach that Cory is no longer allowed to play.

Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) return from their honeymoon in Puerto Rico and Michael Scott (Steve Carell) tells Jim that he has been dating Pam's mother, Helene (Linda Purl), after spending the night with her at their wedding in Niagara. Jim is shocked and tells Michael not to mention anything to Pam (which he reluctantly agrees to do) and to break it off with Helene immediately (which he does not agree to). However, when Jim and Pam give Michael a gift from Puerto Rico, Michael asks if Pam thinks he should date who he wants. He then lets it slip he is dating Helene, and Pam storms out of the office and into the parking lot, screaming all the way down.

Torn between the man who raped her and his son, she was forced into a termination; however, she ran away from the clinic. As Casper tried to talk her down, she ran into traffic and was killed being hit by a car, causing Casper to lash out at her alleged rapist. It soon emerged that Casper was involved in an affair with the station's new Drugs Referral Officer Rochelle Barratt when based at Spicer Street, and while he tried to break it off because her husband Ian was the Superintendent there, it quickly resumed when Rochelle joined Sun Hill. Casper began receiving blackmail letters but continued the affair with Rochelle, despite Ian being promoted to Borough Commander, which led to him appearing at Sun Hill more often.

Julia's two worlds begin to become more similar when, in her widowed world, she meets Daniel after he walks into the travel office and smitten with him, she asks him out on a date. Reluctant at first, Daniel accepts Julia's offer and soon they become involved in a sexual relationship just like her extramarital tryst with Daniel in Julia's fantasy world with her husband being alive. When Daniel becomes more possessive and controlling with Julia, she tries to break it off but he refuses to let their relationship end. Determined to free herself from a loveless romance, Julia ends up killing Daniel by stabbing him to death in his hotel room one evening and then dumping the body into the bay.

She falls in love with the director, but is stubborn to the point where she insists it's only because she's his secretary that she risks so much for him. Kaya continues to be the perfect secretary, always trying to put business before her feelings, because she thinks that if she lets her "cowardice as a woman" get in the way of their relationship, she'll only trouble Kyouhei. Later she confesses to the director that if she were not a perfect secretary, then he would want nothing to do with her, and that scares her. After that, everything goes normally, and Kaya, thinking the director wants to break it off with her, decides to "...break the wall between vampires and humans..." and goes to Kyouhei not as a secretary or food, but as a woman.

On the orders of one of his superiors Mr. Big—Duke proposes to Anna and she accepts only to break it off when her ex-husband Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) exposes Duke's mob ties. Hoping to distance himself from the underworld, Duke appeals to Mr. Big's boss, fellow Scotland native Angus McKay (Guy Doleman) and Guy assures Duke that he will soon be free to marry Anna. Duke proposes to Anna again only for Grenville to bomb her home leading to Duke making a full confession to Anna's co-chief Burt Ramsey (Bob Hastings) – who secretly operates as Mr. Big—hoping to protect Anna and her daughter Robin (Kimberly McCullough). After he is falsely convicted of Ramsey's shooting and imprisoned, Duke teams up with Robert to expose him.

Bob Cryer warmed to her eventually but occasionally found cause to criticise her performance, given her tendency to lean towards "modern" methods of policing, rather than Cryer's own tried and tested traditional means. She shared past history with DI Frank Burnside, who tried to rekindle romance when he was posted to Sun Hill (she was not interested), and was a target for DS Ted Roach's affections. Frazer refused a relationship but conceded to have a drink with Roach – gossip later turned this into a full-blown affair and Conway warned Roach to break it off or face immediate transfer. While initially having recommended him for promotion to D.I. in place of Burnside, wearing down a stubborn Conway, her working relationship with Roach suffered and on several subsequent occasions she came down heavily on him for poor choices in his work.

Casey is engaged to Dr. Hallie Thomas for a time, but she tells him she never wants to have children (in contrast to his desire for them) and they decide to break it off. He tentatively pursues Gabby Dawson but they end up staying friends. At the end of the first season in "Ambition", Hallie returns and Casey rekindles his relationship with her. After discovering a drug ring in a clinic where she works, she is murdered in the season 1 episode "Leaders Lead". Despite Casey and Severide’s efforts to rescue her from the fire set at her clinic, Casey is told by a doctor that Hallie has died, and he begins weeping in Mills’ arms. At the end of season 1 and the prelude into season 2, Gabby shows up at his door helping him cope with Hallie's death.
