She harnessed the technological utopianism already present in her avant-garde music and created iconic electronic sounds such as the Coca-Cola "pop and pour," the intro for Columbia Pictures, the beep for a dishwasher made by General Electric, commercials for Merrill-Lynch, Atari, Clairol conditioner, and Skittles, and even sound effects for pinball machines and B-movies.

The actual result is something slightly more prosaic but brilliant nevertheless: a super-wonky, yearning, cosmic-as-anything 10-minute Andrew Weatherall remix of "Give Me a Reason" by Jagwar Ma. Released to celebrate the group's upcoming tour of the UK, the "Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown Part 1" mix is a brilliant excursion into low-slung bass & beep alchemy.

Yet this machine does possess its own depraved version of soul, a soul that comes out not through nice tunes or reassuring lyrics but through the deep pleasures of hearing its pitched drum machines and polished keyboards zap and buzz and beep and jitter and invert on themselves, and recognizing that these cool noises proceed from an irrepressible sense of play.

After the documentary (Shut Up And Play The Hits) and live box set (The Long Goodbye) came the wine bar, the coffee brand, the astoundingly good mobile disco, the actually quite amazing sounding but ultimately thwarted project to make turnstiles on the New York City subway system beep harmoniously with one another… It seemed like Murphy's time to become a thread in the bristling fabric of NYC public life.

Your Tamagotchi will beep at you until you press one, any, of its buttons (add to that a layer of tech mortality, your Tamagotchi will straight up die on you if you don't fulfil its wishes.) And having to pay attention to a pixelated blob stands in sharp contrast to how we think of our screens today, how aware we have become of the power they have over us.

So when you wanted to chill with your friends, you literally had to stand at a payphone (typically at the mall), pay a quarter, beep your friend with the payphone number and wait for them to call you back on this filthy device full of mall employee halitosis scars and slimy receivers once held by men who would jack off in front of the Dunkin Donuts located in that one deserted wing of every shopping center.

The event was a full takeover of the entire O2 complex, and featured a specially constructed skate area from Nike, a group of small, intimate performances from new artists like Kojey Radical and Cosima hosted by Beats 1 anchor Julie Adenuga, gaming demos, cinema room screenings (including some of our own films, if we can just hit a quick beep on our own horn) and, of course, BBK's headline set on one of the biggest stages in the country.
