After a few years of looking enviously at my SNES-owning pals and their Link to the Pasts and Secret of Manas (and, later, their imported Final Fantasy VIs and Chrono Triggers), here was a Mega Drive game that looked like it could hold a candle to that level of action-adventuring.

The Pawns fight for you, get left to die, and then return to the void to be summoned by yet another stranger—creating this odd paradox that's functionally emphasized by a feature in the game: your Pawn gains knowledge when adventuring with other players, and it then brings that knowledge back into your game.

Creating the perfect meals requires adventuring outside where you battle enemies to gather ingredients and collect recipes (ala Battle Chef Brigade), grow your own fresh produce (ala Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley), master a simple rhythm game to cook quality meals (ala Cooking Mama), and manage business tasks like attending to customer needs (ala Diner Dash).

Don't get me wrong: I may be occasionally nostalgic for the joys of writing and receiving letters, and even for the disconnected anonymity of travel in an age when nobody knew exactly where you were, but as a parent, I am deeply grateful to be able to stay in touch with my children as they go off adventuring.

That word isn't mentioned in the movie either—in a way it sounds as ridiculous as tubes or clouds or superhighways, and doesn't get us closer to really confronting what it is—but the tension these words suggest, between the gutter and the stars, the profane and the sacred, the sublime and the absurd, the virtual and the real, has long been a part of Herzog's adventuring.

The universe is certainly expanding, now that Thor's off adventuring in the cosmos, the Guardians of the Galaxy continue to establish new frontiers in space (including opening the door to Marvel's spacefaring cult favorite Warlock, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and given definition by Thanos' creator Jim Starlin), and there's still some two decades of Captain Marvel's galactic crusade against the Kree to catch up on.
