Pintor had edged a highly controversial split decision over stablemate and long-time champion Carlos Zarate to win his world bantamweight title in June 1978. Zarate retired in disgust following the decision, but Pintor proved to be an able successor and had defended his title twice heading into the fight. Owen arrived in Los Angeles a week before the fight to acclimatise to the humidity. Both Owen and Pintor would go for early morning runs in the local area and would sometimes pass in a nearby park without acknowledging each other.
Pederson's shrimp lives in association with a sea anemone, either Bartholomea annulata or Condylactis gigantea, living among the tentacles with impunity. Before it can do this it needs to acclimatise itself to the anemone by progressively pressing its body and appendages against the tentacles for increasing periods of time. After this it is able to move between the tentacles without getting stung but if it is separated from its host for a few days, it will need to repeat the immunizing procedure. Up to 26 shrimps have been found associated with one sea anemone but usually there are just one or two.
Most of the British infantry and Yeomanry cavalry regiments were redeployed to the Western Front to counter Ludendorff's Spring Offensive and were replaced by British India Army infantry and cavalry. As part of re-organisation and training, these newly arrived soldiers carried out a series of attacks on sections of the Ottoman front line during the summer months. These attacks were aimed at pushing the front line to more advantageous positions in preparation for a major attack, and to acclimatise the newly arrived infantry. It was not until the middle of September that the consolidated force was ready for large-scale operations.
Sutil damaged his front wing on a kerb, and Sauber's Esteban Gutiérrez spun at turn 14. The second session was also hot and humid; many teams used dry tyres early, due to rain clouds above the track. A heavy rain shower fell, preventing an improvement in lap times; some drivers drove on the wet track on the intermediate-compound tyres, to acclimatise themselves with the conditions if inclement weather returned later in the week. Räikkönen lapped fastest at 1 minute, 36.569 seconds, followed by Vettel, Massa and Alonso, Webber, Grosjean, Rosberg, Di Resta, Hamilton and Sutil.
The new force was named the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) and was originally for ratings but in 1861 this was extended to officers who wore distinctive rank lace consisting of interwoven chain links. Officers and men ranked in seniority with but behind their Royal Navy counterparts. A number of naval hulks were moored in the major seaports around Britain to facilitate gunnery training of seamen when they came in from foreign voyages. Officers spent longer periods of up to one or two years training in shore establishments and in ships of the fleet at home and abroad to acclimatise themselves with naval practice.
On 26 August 2012 it was confirmed that Richards would join English Championship side Burnley on 1 January 2013 after the end of the MLS season and in the European transfer window. After initially appearing as a substitute in an FA Cup game, Richards appeared to struggle with his positioning on the field. He was given a second chance, this time in a Championship league game against Huddersfield, coming on after 15 minutes for the injured Dean Marney. Richards again struggled to acclimatise to the pace of the game, and was himself substituted after an hour.
The challenge of sustaining Nancy as a Ligue 1 club was difficult as Wenger inherited a squad of sub-standard quality and he was given limited money to spend. He nevertheless relished the prospect of conducting business in the transfer market, and enjoyed freedom to trial theories he read about. In his first season at Nancy, Wenger hired a dietician to explain the benefits of healthy eating and made it imperative that players did not snack before games. He took the squad away from their usual summer training camp to Val Thorens, so that the players could acclimatise to the high-altitude.
In situations where time is critical, increasing air flow through the device's internals, such as removing the side panel from a PC case and directing a fan to blow into the case, will reduce significantly the time needed to acclimatise to the new environment. In contrast, a very low humidity level favors the build-up of static electricity, which may result in spontaneous shutdown of computers when discharges occur. Apart from spurious erratic function, electrostatic discharges can cause dielectric breakdown in solid state devices, resulting in irreversible damage. Data centers often monitor relative humidity levels for these reasons.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento (better known worldwide as Pelé) once graced the hallowed turf at Portland Park, Troon. In a training camp to acclimatise the players ahead of the 1966 FIFA World Cup, Brazil (with Garrincha, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao, Zito) stayed at the Marine Hotel in Troon & the team trained at our very own Portland Park. Brazil played Scotland at Hampden Park on June, 25, 1966, as part of the South American side’s World Cup warm-up schedule. The game finished 1-1 with Stevie Chalmers scoring for Scotland in the first minute before Servilio equalised for Brazil on 15 minutes.
Work commitments limited his coaching to more of a sought-after "technique consultant" to many of Australia's top hurdlers during the 1960s and 1970s. When time allowed he would also giving technique coaching to young athletes and at schools, all for free. He was appointed Coach of the Australian Athletics Team for the 1968 Summer Olympics at Mexico City, a 25-person team who won 7 medals between them. On the death of the Athletics Team manager, Jim Howlin, Weinberg also took over management of the team, which was in Mexico City for 6 weeks to acclimatise to the high altitude.
In 1983, he travelled to Spain to join Valencia CF for a fee of US$300,000 but he could not acclimatise to life in Europe and returned to Argentina without signing the contract, Valencia eventually signed Juan Jose Urruti instead, and Amuchástegui spent several months without a club before joining San Lorenzo de Almagro in 1984. After a successful season with San Lorenzo he joined River Plate where he was part of the championship winning team of 1985-1986. He then helped the club to win the Copa Libertadores in 1986. Amuchástegui moved to Mexico in 1986 and played for América.
The 29th Battalion arrived in Fiji in early November 1940 and was put to work on fortifying strategic areas of the colony. It was assigned to the area east of Viti Levu while 30th Battalion, once it arrived in mid-November was positioned to the west. The men struggled to acclimatise to the tropics and their equipment and uniforms were substandard. The battalion's personnel had been advised that their stay in Fiji was to be for six months but it was not until late-May that men from Auckland and Poverty Bay districts were returned to New Zealand.
For instance, when it was discovered that the merino sheep was able to acclimatise to the Bushmanland, pastoralists had more cause to encroach on San territory. This was further reinforced by the development of the borehole technology for accessing groundwater, which made the semi-desert conditions livable. Finally, when copper was discovered in the area, San also became the target of the Boers and the Bastard farmers pursuing commercial interests beginning in the 1850s. Aside from a series of massacres, the Boers further contributed to the genocide through their activities that induced the San's forced migration.
She was part of a 22-member eco-Everest expedition team, the Indian contingent also included Sunita Singh, Narendar Singh, Pawan Grewal, Sushma and Vikas Kaushik, besides climbers Rodrigo Raineri of Brazil and David Liano of Mexico. She spent over a month climbing around Everest Base Camps to acclimatise, and also did a climbing exercise at 20,300-feet-high Island Peak in the Himalayas. She started the main climb on 6 May when climbed from the Everest base camp at 18,000 feet to Camp 2 at 22,000 feet. However, then on she used supplemental oxygen, and reached Camp 3 at 23,000 feet and Camp 4 at 26,000 feet.
Her label advised her to acclimatise herself to Western culture through travel, and she arrived in London during the height of the punk rock movement. Hagen was quickly taken up by a circle that included The Slits and the Sex Pistols. Back in Germany by mid-1977, Hagen formed the Nina Hagen Band in West Berlin's Kreuzberg district. In 1978 they released their self-titled debut album, Nina Hagen Band, which included the single "TV-Glotzer" (a cover of "White Punks on Dope" by The Tubes, though with entirely different German lyrics), and "Auf'm Bahnhof Zoo", about West Berlin's then-notorious Berlin Zoologischer Garten station.
Alonso told Toyota he would like to enter the Dakar Rally and win it. Toyota was surprised and he said to them to "try at least". Toyota South Africa organised a two-day evaluation test for Alonso to acclimatise to rally raid conditions in a Toyota Hilux in South Africa's Kalahari Desert in March 2019 and was mentored by Giniel de Villiers. The manufacturer later provided him a five-month training programme with tests in Africa, Europe and the Middle East and was entered into a series of events with the objective of developing his driving ability for a potential entry into the 2020 Dakar Rally.
Aurora, in New Zealand after the expedition, its temporary rudder visible Auroras departure from Australia was delayed by a series of organisational and financial setbacks,Fisher, pp. 398–399 and the party did not arrive in McMurdo Sound until 16 January 1915—very late in the season for depot-laying work. Mackintosh, who believed that Shackleton might attempt to cross the continent in that first season, insisted that sledging work should begin without delay, with a view to laying down supply depots at 79° and 80°S.Tyler-Lewis, p. 69 Joyce opposed this; more time, he maintained, should be set aside to acclimatise and train men and dogs.
This first tour undertaken by England to South Africa was organised with a demanding schedule, although with only one Test Match. Within two weeks and three days, seven matches were to be played, the first four at sea level, and the final three, including the Test Match, at the altitude in the highveld with only two days to acclimatise before a demanding fixture against Northern Transvaal. From the outset, under captain John Pullin and the management of Alec Lewis and John Elders, there was a buoyant and optimistic spirit in the squad, as if they were determined to erase the memories of the last few seasons of undistinguished English performances.
"Taxi Driver", his biggest hit, and "Niger Mambo", an African melody with the Latin beat, were covered with different interpretations by American artists such as Stanley Turrentine and Jackie McLean. Randy Weston covered "Niger Mambo" in a solo performance on his 1978 album Rhythms-Sounds Piano, describing the piece as representing exactly what is called "high life style" in West Africa. Benson also had musical collaborations with the internationally acclaimed and musical legend Eddy Grant, who stayed in Lagos and performed at the Hotel Bobby for many years. This collaboration lasted for many years, allowing Grant to be able to acclimatise himself to the Nigerian culture.
In 1936 Arthur Leggett the owner of Romford Greyhound Stadium decided that he was going to bring cheetah racing to the UK. Twelve cheetahs arrived from Kenya in December 1936 courtesy of explorer Kenneth Gandar-Dower. After six months of quarantine the cheetahs were given time to acclimatise before Romford, Harringay Stadium and Staines were earmarked for the experiment with the cheetahs, running for the first time on Saturday 11 December 1937 at Romford. The experiment failed and the racing stopped because although the cheetahs were able to better the greyhound times they had to be let off first when racing greyhounds and when they raced against each other they became disinterested and stopped chasing the lure.
Nevado Huascarán, the highest peak in the range, is typically climbed in three days by a variety of routes. There are many difficult climbs in the region, and many have died on the peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. Snow conditions in the area are unlike those in the rest of the world, and many inexperienced climbers attempt to climb beyond their means or without spending enough time to acclimatise because of the relative technical ease of some of the lesser peaks. Although guide service prices may appear high when compared with the general prices of things in Peru, they are lower than in other climbing regions of the world and are an important way to minimize risk.
A horse destined to serve in the war, being off-loaded in Port Elizabeth The number of horses killed in the war was at the time unprecedented in modern warfare. For example, in the Relief of Kimberley, French's cavalry rode 500 horses to their deaths in a single day. The wastage was particularly heavy among British forces for several reasons: overloading of horses with unnecessary equipment and saddlery, failure to rest and acclimatise horses after long sea voyages and, later in the war, poor management by inexperienced mounted troops and distant control by unsympathetic staffs. The average life expectancy of a British horse, from the time of its arrival in Port Elizabeth, was around six weeks.
Carson restrained the filly in the early stages before allowing her to make up ground on the outside and sending her into the lead half a mile from the finish. In the straight she increased her lead with every stride to record a "highly impressive victory" by twelve lengths from Acclimatise, with Royal Heroine (Breeders' Cup Mile) and Cormorant Wood (Champion Stakes) among the beaten fillies. The winning margin was the largest ever recorded in the Oaks and the biggest in any British Classic race since Never Say Die won the St Leger by twelve lengths in 1954. Observers including Timeform speculated that Sun Princess might well have won that year's Epsom Derby if she had contested that race.
By stopping for chang at each village, each day's walk was not too strenuous and so there was time to acclimatise. The weather was hot and humid (the monsoon was still on) and the first party took from 2 August until 18 August to reach Khunde and everyone had reached Base Camp by 23 August. The trek route runs west to east whereas all the rivers flow south so the journey involves crossing several ridges and descending into valleys. The route is still used for trekking forty years later – although there is now a road that penetrates as far to the east as Jiri it does not reach all the way to Khumbu.
The Chinese saying "upon the roots of the tree rest falling leaves" expresses a desire to be buried with their ancestors, allowing their relatives to look after their spirit with burnt offerings. Burial is an important ritual, and if it is done well it can bring great fortune, but if performed incorrectly can lead to bad fortune for the family. It was important to acclimatise the decease's spirit to the Underworld and to achieve this the body would be buried for around seven years. At the end of this time it could be exhumed, the bones placed in an urn and transported back to their home village, where they are re-interned.
The objectives were to ascend the summit; and to train up a pool of climbers who could acclimatise well at or more and to study the use of oxygen apparatus. Shipton said in his first despatch to "The Times" that his objective was to climb Cho Oyu. Eric Shipton had spent a day on lists of stores, but Earle Riddiford (who had returned from the 1951 expedition with Michael Ward and was now staying with Norman and Enid Hardie in London) had to do the ordering, packing and despatching, with Shipton often not around to consult. The New Zealand amount of food for two people was the same as what Shipton had allowed for four people.
They used this time to acclimatise and practice in the nets, but also to put on weight. Having arrived from a country that had had seven years of rationing Australia was a 'land flowing with milk and honey' and Hammond promised his men "the happiest six months of their lives".p3, Cary Everyone in the team put on weight, one "consuming more in one day in Perth than his full weekly ration in London" and the big bowlers Bill Voce and Dick Pollard adding up to two stone (28 lbs) in weight.p3, Cary The team sent home food parcels from each city they visited and in general took an easy time of it.
Kerryn Goldsworthy's review in The Sydney Morning Herald noted the familiar premise of "...a group of plucky women with problems get together to run a business...", but that of its kind, the book is well-written with lush and detailed descriptions. Maree Field's review of The Tea Chest considered the cosy novel's three main characters as likeable and relatable, within the framework of an engaging story. Ann-Maree Lourey considered that it took a while to acclimatise to the book, but that it became very readable. Moon's second novel, The Chocolate Promise (variously published as, The Chocolate Apothecary), was reviewed by Amy Vuleta in Books+Publishing as a Tasmanian twist on the movie Chocolat.
He was immediately a starter for the club. In the title winning season of 2008–09, Stojanović made 29 appearances and scored six goals while in the previous season, due to injuries he managed only 17 league appearances. At the end of the 2009–10 season, his contract with Zrinjski came to an end and so Stojanović decided to continue his career in Portugal, signing as a free agent on a two-year deal with Nacional. He became only the second Zrinjski Mostar player to move to Portugal, after Lamine Diarra made the switch in 2007. He struggled to acclimatise to the speed and quality of the Portuguese Primeira Liga and only made 19 appearances during his time at the club.
Following the First Transjordan and the Second Transjordan attacks by the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) in March/April and April/May 1918, the EEF commanded by General Edmund Allenby occupied the Jordan Valley and the front line, which extended across the Judean Hills to the Mediterranean. Most of the British infantry and yeomanry cavalry regiments were redeployed to the Western Front to counter Ludendorff's Spring Offensive and were replaced by British India Army infantry and cavalry. As part of reorganisation and training, these newly arrived soldiers carried out a series of attacks on sections of the Ottoman front line during the summer months. These attacks were aimed at pushing the front line to more advantageous positions in preparation for a major attack and to acclimatise the newly arrived India Army infantry.
Romford Greyhound Stadium owner Archer Leggett initiated a bizarre idea to introduce cheetah racing to the UK. Twelve cheetahs arrived from Kenya in December 1936 courtesy of explorer Kenneth Gandar-Dower. After six months of quarantine the cheetahs were given time to acclimatise before Romford, Harringay and Staines were earmarked for the experiment with the cheetahs running for the first time on Saturday 11 December 1937 at Romford. The experiment failed, with just one further race held; the racing stopped because although the cheetahs were able to better the greyhound times they had to be let off first when racing greyhounds and when they raced against each other they became disinterested and stopped chasing the lure. Fourteen year old George Curtis secured a job with Portsmouth Stadium trainer Bill Peters.
Main Sequence took time to acclimatise to his new base and did not race until July 6, when he conteted the Grade I United Nations Stakes over eleven furlongs on turf at Monmouth Park. Ridden by Rajiv Maragh he started at odds of 8/1 in a nine-runner field headed by the Canadian colt Kaigun and the Tom Albertrani=trained Twilight Eclipse. Main Sequence made his customary slow start and was at the back of the field for most of the way before producing a run on the outside in the straight. Flashing his tail as usual he overtook Twilight Eclipse in the final strides to win by a neck, recording his first win at the highest level and his first win of any kind for more than two years.
In order to be able to move troops to the front in New Guinea more rapidly, to acclimatise them during the process, and to allow more realistic training of large formations in jungle and mountainous but malaria-free terrain, Blamey decided to establish a training and staging area on the Atherton Tableland in November 1942. Eventually, accommodation was provided there for 70,000 troops. As divisions returned from tours of duty in New Guinea in 1943 and 1944, they were sent to Atherton for anti-malaria treatment. The men then went on leave, after which they returned to Atherton where training was conducted before staging and departing again. In early 1943 the Army developed a jungle warfare doctrine by adapting the pre-war field service regulations to meet the conditions in the South-West Pacific.
Ridden by Tony Murray, he started at odds of 6/1 and won by one and a half lengths from the three-year-old Verd-Antique. On his final appearance, Jupiter Island was sent to Japan to contest the sixth running of the Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on 23 November. The fourteen runner field included challengers from the United Kingdom, France (Triptych), New Zealand (Waverley Star), Canada and the United States, while the "home team" was headed by the Tenno Sho winner Sakura Yutaka O and the 1985 Japanese Champion three-year-old Miho Shinzan. Jupiter Island, who had been flown out two weeks before the race to give him an opportunity to acclimatise to the local conditions, was ridden by Pat Eddery and started at odds of 13.9/1 in front of a crowd of almost 100,000.
"Quantifying the benefits of long-term integrated pest control for forest bird populations in a New Zealand temperate rainforest". New Zealand Journal of Ecology 36 (2) Individual nest sites are also protected from predators using metal tree-trunk wraps; this has been a successful programme and only one nest out of 153 has been lost to predators since 2003. The other major conservation strategy is captive breeding programmes carried out at Peacock Springs by the Isaac Wildlife Trust, with individuals being released on predator-free islands. Birds are placed in portable aviaries in the forest to acclimatise them before release. A total of 45 birds were released between 2005 and 2007 on Chalky Island, off the coast of Fiordland. The local population had increased to 150 individuals in 2009, and 100–200 by 2011, but had declined to 50–150 individuals in 2013.
In late July 2007, Tininho signed for English club West Bromwich Albion on a two-year deal worth £230,000, after a successful trial. He made his competitive debut on 11 August in a 1–2 defeat at Burnley, on the opening day of the season. However, he did not play another league game for Albion and, in January 2008 was loaned to fellow Championship side Barnsley for a month, in order to "acclimatise to this league". On 11 August 2008, Tininho was released from his WBA contract with a view to him returning to Portugal, with Leixões SC. However, nothing came of it, and he eventually joined C.F. Os Belenenses also in the top division in mid-December; the Lisbon team eventually finished second from bottom, being later reinstated after C.F. Estrela da Amadora's demotion due to financial irregularities.
The greyhound industry boom allowed companies such as Romford Stadium Ltd to thrive and greyhound racing itself was big business and national news. Before work got underway at Dagenham, Arthur Leggett decided that he was going to bring cheetah racing to the UK. The 2007 Cricket World Cup warm-up matches were held prior to the 2007 Cricket World Cup, between 5 March and 9 March 2007. All 16 nations that were qualified to take part in the World Cup participated in a series of matches to prepare, experiment with different tactics and to help them acclimatise to conditions in the West Indies. The warm-up matches were not classified as One Day Internationals by the International Cricket Council (ICC), despite sharing some of main features of this form of cricket, but some of the playing regulations were different from standard internationals in order to allow teams to experiment. For example, the main change allowed for thirteen different players to play in a match - nine players being allowed to both bat and bowl, with two only being able to bowl and two only being able to bat - instead of the eleven players normally allowed.
The 2011 Cricket World Cup warm-up matches were held prior to the 2011 Cricket World Cup, between February 12 and February 18, 2011. All 14 nations that were qualified to take part in the World Cup participated in a series of matches to prepare, experiment with different tactics and to help them acclimatise to conditions in the Indian Subcontinent. The warm-up matches were not classified as One Day Internationals by the International Cricket Council (ICC), despite sharing some of main features of this form of cricket, but some of the playing regulations were different from standard internationals in order to allow teams to experiment. For example, the main change allowed for thirteen different players to play in a match – nine players being allowed to both bat and bowl, with two only being able to bowl and two only being able to bat – instead of the eleven players normally allowed.
In the view of the Basel Home Committee, Afro-West Indians were better suited to acclimatise to the West African climate in comparison to their European counterparts who often succumbed to death from tropical diseases. Furthermore, the presence of West Indians from the then British and Danish-controlled Caribbean islands, would prove to native Africans that there were indeed black Christians in the world. On arrival in the Gold Coast colony, the Caribbean recruits relocated to Akropong. Riis and Thompson had regular misunderstandings and it was decided by the mission station to transfer George Thompson, together with his young bride, Catherine to Christiansborg to establish and English-language school on the coast. On 27 November 1843, a boys’ boarding middle school, the Salem School opened at Christiansborg, the oldest existing school founded by the Basel Mission. The founding schoolteachers were George Thompson, Catherine Mulgrave and young Jamaican teacher, Alexander Worthy Clerk who was part of the same group of 24 Moravian Caribbean emigrants who had earlier arrived in April 1843.
Wilson, p. 3 Following the Japanese surrender, all these plans changed. The post-war British Army only needed one airborne division, and the 6th Airborne was chosen to remain on strength. Reinforced by the 2nd Parachute Brigade, the division was sent to the Middle East as the Imperial Strategic Reserve.Wilson, p. 4 Parachute Regiment soldier standing guard over Jewish civilians waiting to be questioned during Operation Shark, July–August 1946 The 3rd Parachute Brigade was the first unit of the Airborne Division to arrive in Palestine, disembarking at Haifa on 3 October 1945.Cole, p. 202 The brigade then moved to Gaza to acclimatise and regain their fitness after the voyage from England.Wilson, p. 5 On 21 October the brigade was deployed around the Lydda district, with responsibility for Tel Aviv and Jaffa.Wilson, p. 22 The first incident involving the brigade came on 14 November 1945, when the Jewish National Council called for a 12-hour strike, which resulted in rioting in Tel Aviv. By 18:15 the Palestine Police Force was unable to cope and sent for reinforcements from the 8th Parachute Battalion.Wilson, p. 27 The complete battalion was deployed and the riot was under control by 21:40 and a curfew imposed for the rest of the night.Wilson, p.
